The objective of this study was to evaluate thefungal concentrations within carpets of the same typeand manufacture during their first 2 years of life.The carpets tested came from several different branchoffices of a bank.A total of 60 dust samples from 20 carpets (3samples per carpet) was analysed. The age of thecarpets varied from 50 to 666 days. Analysis of therelationship between fungal concentration and time wasmade by the Pearson test.Fungal concentrations were very different withina same carpet. Moreover, species distribution was alsoheterogeneous; thus the fungi in 1 m2 carpet didnot reflect mycobiota of the whole carpet. Very localfungal contaminations (>10 CFU/mg/dust) were builtup in a relatively short time (138 days). Thehighest concentrations (maximum: 200 CFU/mg dust) weremainly due to species of coelomycetes (mitosporicfungi forming conidia in closed bodies) and to variousyeasts. Comparisons of the 20 carpets sampled did notshow significant differences; the fungal level did notincrease with time (P > 0.05). A decrease waseven noticed. The age of carpets had no significanteffect either on the number of CFU/mg dust of the mainfungal taxa (P > 0.10).It was concluded that these carpets, which wereregularly cleaned, in this particular environment, donot favour important fungal growth. Moreover, sincethe species responsible for the highest contaminationobserved produce conidia or cells not easilytransported through the air, their role in respiratoryallergy would be relatively limited.  相似文献

Summary A six-stage Andersens's sampler was compared with a single stage type (SAS) for the collection of airborne fungi particles. The efficiency of two non selective culture media, and namely malt agar (MA) and potato dextrose agar (PDA), which were both modified in order to inhibit bacterial growth, was compared as well. An overall assessment of quantitative results suggests that the two samplers have a comparable degree of efficiency. However, the SAS appears to collect a greater number of CFU/m3 in absence of wind and viceversa the Andersen one appears to be more efficient in the presence of wind. The number of species detected with the SAS device is smaller, thus requiring an increased number of suctions. Andersen sampler sieving, according to the aerodynamic characteristics of the particles, appears to be not too accurate: there is an overlap from stage to stage of the sampler and some larger particles settle on smaller particle-collecting stages and viceversa. The PDA, with streptomycin and chloramphenicol, is better and closer to the natural distribution pattern: the number of CFU/m3 is higher although the number of the collected species is about the same.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare the pollen spectra recorded in rural and urban environments in order to examine whether pollen data obtained in the urban environment could also represent the situation in surrounding rural areas and how urban planting affects the regional pollen spectrum. Daily airborne pollen observations were performed with a volumetric Hirst type trap in Moscow (Russia). Modified Tauber traps were located in the Moscow region. The Tauber traps were installed and treated according to Pollen Monitoring Programme (PMP) guidelines. Spearman correlation coefficients were determined between the percentage of total pollen recorded in the Tauber and Hirst type samplers. The data showed that the Tauber spectra are characterised by higher taxonomic variability, mainly due to the greater occurrence of local herbaceous plants. Pollen types registered by Hirst type samplers were predominantly represented by anemophilous arboreal species, used in urban planting. A significant correlation for annual sums was only observed for Betula pollen, the most abundant component in both sampler types. Data obtained in big cities for dominant taxa can be extrapolated to the surrounding rural territories. The simultaneous use of volumetric and gravimetric samplers can be very useful for palaeo-ecological studies to evaluate the presence of local and transported pollen.  相似文献

Estimating contemporary genetic structure and population connectivity in marine species is challenging, often compromised by genetic markers that lack adequate sensitivity, and unstructured sampling regimes. We show how these limitations can be overcome via the integration of modern genotyping methods and sampling designs guided by LiDAR and SONAR data sets. Here we explore patterns of gene flow and local genetic structure in a commercially harvested abalone species (Haliotis rubra) from southeastern Australia, where the viability of fishing stocks is believed to be dictated by recruitment from local sources. Using a panel of microsatellite and genomewide SNP markers, we compare allele frequencies across a replicated hierarchical sampling area guided by bathymetric LiDAR imagery. Results indicate high levels of gene flow and no significant genetic structure within or between benthic reef habitats across 1400 km of coastline. These findings differ to those reported for other regions of the fishery indicating that larval supply is likely to be spatially variable, with implications for management and long‐term recovery from stock depletion. The study highlights the utility of suitably designed genetic markers and spatially informed sampling strategies for gaining insights into recruitment patterns in benthic marine species, assisting in conservation planning and sustainable management of fisheries.  相似文献

Over 2000 specimens of pycnogonid from deep-sea collections made in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean by IOS and SMBA between 1971 and 1994 have been analysed. Thirty-five species were identified, two being new to science, viz Nymphon akanthochoeros and an unnamed Anoplodactylus species. The deep-sea Pycnogonida of the northeastern Atlantic are reviewed using these data and records from the literature. Keys are presented for the six families represented by more than one species. The pycnogonid fauna of this area is characterized particularly by Paranymphon spinosum and Colossendeis clavata , with other dominant species including Colossendeis species, notably C. macenima , and Nymphon laterospinum, Anoplodactylus typhlops and A. arnaudae. Of the 54 species recorded below 200 m in the northeastern Atlantic, available evidence suggests that nine are 'endemic'. Relative distributions of the other species are discussed. A distinct change in the pycnogonid fauna with depth was found at around 1400 m. There is latitudinal separation of species groupings, shown most conspicuously by the shallower water species.  相似文献

This study sets out a novel method to determine dispersal distances in lichens. Direct measurement of dispersal often remains difficult for lichens and other small inconspicuous species because of the need to track microscopic reproductive propagules, which even if they can be captured, cannot be identified using traditional morphological approaches. A low‐cost device (<£200) was developed to trap the reproductive propagules of lichens, capable of sampling around 0.1 m3 of air per minute. In parallel, molecular techniques were developed to enable species‐specific detection of propagules caught by the devices, with identification using novel species‐specific primers and optimization of a standard DNA extraction and nested PCR protocol. The methods were tested for both their sensitivity and specificity against a suite of lichen epiphytes, differing in their reproductive mechanisms, dispersal structures and rarity. Sensitivity tests showed that the molecular techniques could detect a single asexual propagule (soredium or isidium), or as few as 10 sexual spores. As proof of concept, propagule traps were deployed into a wooded landscape where the target epiphytes were present. Extractions from deployed propagule traps were sequenced, showing that the method was able to detect the presence of the target species in the atmosphere. As far as we are aware, this is the first attempt to use mechanized propagule traps in combination with DNA diagnostics to detect dispersal of lichens. The tests carried out here point the way for future dispersal studies of lichen epiphytes and other passively dispersed microscopic organisms including fungi or bryophytes.  相似文献

Summary An investigation of microbial air quality in the area of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, located in the southern part of Mexico City, was conducted for one year. Ambient outdoor concentrations and size distribution of airborne bacteria were measured, 130 samples were taken at noon, using an Andersen 6 stage sampler, located 2 m above ground level. Concentration ranges and colony-forming units per cubic meter of air (CFU m–3) found, were as follows:14 to 12999 for total bacteria, No growth (NG) to 55 for coliform bacteria, NG to 11 for fecal coliform and NG to 10 for fecal Streptococci.Bacteria associated with the potentially respirable fraction (0.65 to 4.7 µm) averaged 37% and 9% for total bacteria and coliform bacteria respectively. In 23% of the samples, coliform bacteria were recovered, with higher incidences during dry season. The most common of these were:Escherichia coli (15%), followed bySerratia (13%) andEnterobacter (10%),The total bacteria correlated significatively (p<0.05) with the following parameters: particulate matter smaller than 10 µm (PM10) (r=0.40), total suspended particulates (TSP) (r=0.26), daily variation of temperature (r=0.18), and vapor pressure (r=–0.16). These relationships indicate that fecal soil pollution could affect air quality with potential health risks.  相似文献

Plants closing stomata in the presence of harmful gases is believed to be a stress avoidance mechanism. SO2, one of the major airborne pollutants, has long been reported to induce stomatal closure, yet the mechanism remains unknown. Little is known about the stomatal response to airborne pollutants besides O3. SLOW ANION CHANNEL‐ASSOCIATED 1 (SLAC1) and OPEN STOMATA 1 (OST1) were identified as genes mediating O3‐induced closure. SLAC1 and OST1 are also known to mediate stomatal closure in response to CO2, together with RESPIRATORY BURST OXIDASE HOMOLOGs (RBOHs). The overlaying roles of these genes in response to O3 and CO2 suggested that plants share their molecular regulators for airborne stimuli. Here, we investigated and compared stomatal closure event induced by a wide concentration range of SO2 in Arabidopsis through molecular genetic approaches. O3‐ and CO2‐insensitive stomata mutants did not show significant differences from the wild type in stomatal sensitivity, guard cell viability, and chlorophyll content revealing that SO2‐induced closure is not regulated by the same molecular mechanisms as for O3 and CO2. Nonapoptotic cell death is shown as the reason for SO2‐induced closure, which proposed the closure as a physicochemical process resulted from SO2 distress, instead of a biological protection mechanism.  相似文献

Upon sensing attack by pathogens and insect herbivores, plants release complex mixtures of volatile compounds. Here, we show that the infection of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) plants with the non-host bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato led to the production of microbe-induced plant volatiles (MIPVs). Surprisingly, the bacterial type III secretion system, which injects effector proteins directly into the plant cytosol to subvert host functions, was found to prime both intra- and inter-specific defense responses in neighbouring wild tobacco (Nicotiana benthamiana) plants. Screening of each of 16 effectors using the Pseudomonas fluorescens effector-to-host analyser revealed that an effector, HopP1, was responsible for immune activation in receiver tobacco plants. Further study demonstrated that 1-octen-3-ol, 3-octanone and 3-octanol are novel MIPVs emitted by the lima bean plant in a HopP1-dependent manner. Exposure to synthetic 1-octen-3-ol activated immunity in tobacco plants against a virulent pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci. Our results show for the first time that a bacterial type III effector can trigger the emission of C8 plant volatiles that mediate defense priming via plant–plant interactions. These results provide novel insights into the role of airborne chemicals in bacterial pathogen-induced inter-specific plant–plant interactions.  相似文献
