Summary Two annual species of Bromus, an invader (B. hordeaceus, ex B. mollis) and a non-invader (B. intermedius), were grown for 28 days in growth chambers, at 5 and 100 M NO 3 - in flowing nutrient solution. No differences between the two species were observed at either NO 3 - level, in terms of relative growth rate (RGR) or its components, dry matter partitioning, specific NO 3 - absorption rate, nitrogen concentration, and other characteristics of NO 3 - uptake and photosynthesis. The effects of decreasing NO 3 - concentration in the solution were mainly to decrease the NO 3 - concentration in the plants through decreased absorption rate, and to decrease the leaf area ratio through increased specific leaf mass and decreased leaf mass ratio. Organic nitrogen concentration varied little between the two treatments, which may be the reason why photosynthetic rates were not altered. Consequently, RGR was only slightly decreased in the 5-M treatment compared to the 100-M treatment. This is in contrast with other species, where growth is reduced at much higher NO 3 - concentrations. These discrepancies may be related to differences in RGR, since a log-linear relationship was found between RGR and the NO 3 - concentration at which growth is first reduced. In addition, a strong linear relationship was found between the RGR of these species and their maximum absorption rate for nitrate, suggesting that the growth of species with low maximum RGR may be partly regulated by nutrient uptake.  相似文献

Plants of Taraxacum sellandii Dahlst., a microspecies adapted to fertile, and Taraxacum nordstedtii Dahlst., adapted to infertile soils, were cultured hydroponically, either on a complete nutrient solution or on one deprived of nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium ions. For all four treatments, the growth and internal mineral concentration of the plants was monitored. For plants cultured on a complete nutrient solution, the uptake rates of nitrate, phosphate, and potassium ions were determined. Luxury consumption of the three macronutrients was computed as the excess of ion absorption over the ion uptake rates minimally required to sustain maximum growth. In these calculations the critical N, P, or K+ concentrations, earlier derived, were used as parameters describing the mineral status minimally required to allow maximum growth. Efficiency in use of the three macroelements at various levels of mineral accumulation was also computed. Finally, the response to phosphate starvation as related to phosphate uptake capacity and the accumulation of P was investigated.
The physiological properies investigated provide a causal background for the superior adaptation of T. nordstedtii as compared to T. sellandii to infertile sites. Taraxacum nordstedtii had a higher relative luxury consumption of NO3, H2PO-4, and K+, a higher efficiency in N and P use at N– and (severe) P-deficiency, respectively; and, after phosphate starvation, a relatively high preservation of phosphate uptake capacity and an enlargement of P storage. In combination with the low potential growth, luxury consumption will be particularly effective in T. nordstedtii in preventing or minimizing mineral deficiency. The distribution of minerals between cytoplasm and vacuoles as a factor in mineral use efficiency is discussed.  相似文献

Birch ( Betula pendula Roth.) was investigated under steady-state nutrition and growth at different incident photon flux densities (PFD) and different relative addition rates of nitrogen. PFD had a strong influence on the relative growth rate at optimum nutrition and on the nitrogen productivity (growth rate per unit of nitrogen) but little effect on the formal relationships between nitrogen and growth, i.e. PFD and nitrogen nutrition are orthogonal growth factors. At a given suboptimum nitrogen (the same distance from optimum), increased PFD increased the relative growth rate and, therefore, the relative uptake rate and the required relative addition rate in accordance with the theoretical equality between these three parameters at steady-state nutrition. Correspondingly, at a given suboptimum relative addition rate, increased PFD decreased nitrogen status (larger distance from optimum) at an unchanged relative growth rate. Nutrient uptake rate, dry matter content, and partitioning of biomass and nutrients are strongly influenced by nitrogen status. PFD influences these characteristics, but only to an extent corresponding to its effect on the nitrogen status. The influence of PDF on the relative growth rate at optimum and on nitrogen productivity is well described by hyperbolic relationships, similar to reported PFD/photosynthesis relationships. These expressions for plant growth as well as the productivities of leaf area and quantum appear to be valuable characteristics of plant responses to light and nutrition. Although the calculated PFD/growth relationships indicate saturation at high values of PFD, a more realistic estimate of PFD at which saturation occurs is about 30 mol m−2 day−1, where the highest relative growth rate and nitrogen productivity were experimentally determined. No significant effect was observed because of day length differences between the present and previous experiments.  相似文献

Summary The orchid Prasophyllum fimbria is pollinated by nectar-feeding native bees and wasps. The pollinia are patially separated from the viscidium by a stipe so that pollinia can be labelled with coloured histochemical stains without interfering with pollinarium removal. Pollen flow was monitored by following the movement of the coloured pollen in several populations of P. fimbria in Western Australia. Statistical analysis confirmed that pollen labelling did not interfere with pollinarium removal or subsequent pollination of the labelled flower. Fifty eight labelled pollinaria were removed by vectors from 16 test spikes, with a total of 125 flowers on 47 spikes receiving labelled pollen. An average of 2 flowers received pollen for every pollinium removed but up to 6 flowers received pollen from a single collinium. No significant differences between mean vector flights and pollen flow distances were detected. On average, geitonogamous transfers only accounted for 22% of all pollinations. This is a simple and inexpensive technique for the direct labelling of pollen with minimal disruption to the pollination system and may have applications in other plant families.  相似文献

Macrophages from various origins are known to express membrane lectins that mediate the endocytosis of mannose-bearing glycoconjugates. Most macrophage tumor cell-lines lack such receptors. In this paper we show by flow cytometry analysis that a newly generated macrophage hybridoma (2C11–12), which displays several macrophage characteristics, also expresses mannose membrane lectins, resulting in the internalization of fluoresceinylated neoglycoproteins into acidic compartments.Thioglycolate elicited mouse peritoneal macrophages and the 2C11–12 hybridomas were compared by flow cytometry with regard to the binding and endocytosis of 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) variants separated by affinity chromatography on immobilized concanavalin A. AGP C eluted specifically with methyl -mannopyranoside, which contains two bi-antennary oligosaccharides, was endocytosed as mannosylated serum albumin (Man-BSA). In both types of macrophages, the fluoresceinylated ligands were internalized in acidic compartments as demonstrated by the fluorescence intensity increase upon monensin post-incubation. However the behaviour of the internalized ligands was found to be quite different. AGP C and Man-BSA were rapidly degraded by thioglycolate elicited peritoneal macrophages and excreted in the medium as small peptide fragments; conversely they remained a longer time in the 2C11–12 hybridoma.  相似文献

Abstract. The present study investigates the relationships between nitrogen uptake, transpiration, and carbon assimilation. Plants growing on nutrient solution were enclosed for 10–16 d in a growth chamber, where temperature, photon flux density, vapour saturation deficit and CO2 concentration were controlled. One of these factors was modified every 4 to 5 d. Shoot photosynthesis and root and shoot respiration were recorded every half-hour. Nitrogen uptake from the root medium and plant transpiration were measured daily. In most cases, an increase in photon flux density led to increases in transpiration, net daily carbon assimilation, and nitrogen uptake. By modifying transpiration rate without changing photosynthesis (varying vapour saturation deficit), or by modifying transpiration and carbon assimilation in opposite ways (varying CO2 air concentration), it was shown that nitrogen uptake does not follow transpiration, but is linked to the carbon uptake of the plant. When light was increased from low to intermediate levels, the N uptake/C assimilation ratio remained constant. At higher photon flux density, this ratio declined markedly. It is proposed that in the first case, growth is limited by carbohydrate availability, thus any increase in carbon assimilation leads to a proportional increase in nitrogen uptake, in contrast to the second situation where carbohydrates may accumulate in the plant without further nitrogen requirement.  相似文献

In a previous paper (J. Math. Biol. 26, 199–215 (1988)) we calculated the mean and variance of the long-run geometric growth rate of a discrete-time population model with two age classes in a random environment. The formula which was used in that paper as the starting point for the computation of the variance represents only the contribution of the one-period variances. Here we supplement these results by a calculation of the exact variance. All qualitative conclusions reached before are unaffected.  相似文献

The productivity of Nais spp. from periphyton of fishponds of the Dombes area (Ain) was studied in semi-natural conditions by cultivation of zooids in experimental glass enclosures immersed in situ and filled with pond water receiving injections of fertilizers (P2O5) and natural filtered periphyton extracts (particles < 70 µm). The growth rate of the experimental populations was not significantly affected by the concentration of fertilizers added to culture media. On the contrary, the water management of the culture media (as renewal or non-renewal of the water in experimental enclosures), the closing procedure of the enclosures and the load and composition of the nutritive substrate controlled the produced biomass. Temperature and food supply were the principal extrinsic variables controlling the asexual growth rate of the Nais species. The stolonization rate was analyzed as a biological parameter implicated in the instantaneous birth rate of zooids and the growth of naidid populations.  相似文献

Contrary to previous presumption, accumulated evidence indicates that far-infrared rays are biologically active. A small ceramic disk that emist far-infrared rays (4–16 m) has commonly been applied to a local spot or a whole part of the body for exposure. Pioneering attempts to experimentally analyze an effect of acute and chronic radiation of far-infrared rays on living organisms have detected a growth-promoting effect in growing rats, a sleep-modulatory effect in freely behaving rats and an insomiac patient, and a blood circulation-enhancing effect in human skin. Question-paires to 542 users of far-infrared radiator disks embedded in bedelothes revealed that the majority of the users subjectively evaluated an improvement of their health. These effects on living organisms appear to be non-specifically triggered by an exposure to far-infrared rays, which eventually induce an increase in temperature of the body tissues or, more basically, an elevated motility of body fluids due to decrease in size of water clusters.  相似文献
