The effectiveness of soil fumigation with 50, 100 and 200 µL kg?1 soil of essential oils (EOs) from the plant species Eucalyptus citriodora, Eucalyptus globulus, Mentha piperita, Pelargonium asperum and Ruta graveolens was assessed against the root‐knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita on potted tomato. Plant growth parameters and number of galls, nematode eggs and juveniles on tomato roots were evaluated after two months of maintenance of the treated plants at 25°C in greenhouse. EOs of E. globulus and P. asperum significantly reduced nematode multiplication and gall formation on tomato roots at all the tested rates, whereas the EOs of E. citriodora, M. piperita and R. graveolens were more suppressive at levels greater than 50 µL kg?1 soil. Biofumigation with EOs of E. globulus and P. asperum resulted also in the largest increase of tomato plant top and root biomass. The five samples of EOs had a different chemical composition as determined by GC and GC‐MS. Structure–activity relationship based on the main constituents of the tested EOs and their nematicidal effect on M. incognita is discussed.  相似文献

Modern, intensive grassland management has led to strong declines in ground‐nesting grassland birds, and is now increasingly threatening the last remaining strongholds of the Whinchat Saxicola rubetra in the Central European uplands. In this study, we assess key threats to Whinchat populations in these uplands in order to suggest appropriate conservation measures. We compared the direct threat of early mowing as well as the indirect threat resulting from a deteriorating arthropod food source in an inner‐alpine valley. Five of our seven study sites were mown too early with respect to the chicks' fledging date. Such early mowing was particularly evident on the more intensively farmed, earlier mown valley bottoms than on the valley slopes. Arthropod abundance and biomass did not differ between valley bottoms and slopes. However, valley bottoms had a greater amount of unprofitable prey items such as flies. Breeding bird density was mainly determined by the degree of overlap between the mowing schedule and breeding phenology. These findings suggest that in upland grasslands at an early stage of intensification, early mowing is of greater importance for populations than possible negative effects of a reduced food source. We suggest that mowing is delayed until a sufficient proportion of nestlings are safely fledged.  相似文献

Effective conservation of endangered species requires a solid understanding of the demographic causes of population change. Bird populations breeding on agricultural grasslands have declined because their preferred habitat of herb‐rich meadows has been replaced by grassland monocultures. The timing of agricultural activities in these monocultural grasslands is critical, as they often coincide with the nesting phase of breeding birds. Here, we aim to identify the effect of habitat management and targeted nest protection on nest survival of Black‐tailed Godwits Limosa limosa in the Netherlands, a population that has shown a 70% reduction in breeding population size since the 1970s. To protect nests in monocultures from destruction, farmers are paid to either delay mowing or leave a patch of unmown grass around the nest, a patch which in practice varied in size. In herb‐rich meadows, which are typically managed for bird conservation purposes, mowing occurs after hatching. Nest survival declined as the season advanced, more steeply on monocultures than on meadows. Targeted nest protection was only partially successful, as nest predation was considerably higher on mown grassland monocultures with small unmown patches around the nest than in mown monocultures with large unmown patches and in unmown fields. Increased predator densities over the years have been suggested as an important cause of the trend towards lower nest survival, but here we show that nest survival was higher on herb‐rich meadows than on monocultures, and similar to the 1980s. It thus seems that increased predator densities are an increased threat during the egg stage only if habitat quality is low. High‐quality habitat in the form of herb‐rich meadows therefore provides a degree of protection against predators.  相似文献

污水处理、处理水处理和污泥处理是污水处理综合系统的3个基本单元.本文运用能值分析和新构建的能值指标评估了处理水回用与排放、污泥填埋与堆肥对系统整体性能的影响.该系统的价值包括环境收益和产品输出两方面.前者可通过污水处理前后的环境服务差值计算.由于系统内部物质和能量的转化数据难以获知,产品价值通过新提出的替代价值核算.结果表明: “污水处理+处理水回用+污泥填埋”的竞争力最高,“污水处理+处理水回用+蚯蚓堆肥”的可持续性能最高;处理水回用和蚯蚓堆肥均有助于提高系统可持续性;处理水回用与否应综合考虑处理水水质和当地条件;污泥蚯蚓堆肥的资源化效率还有待提高;改进的能值指标更适宜于污水处理综合系统效益评估.  相似文献

Restoration Ecology to the Future: A Call for New Paradigm   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The discipline of restoration ecology has grown remarkably in the past decades, providing new ideas and opportunities for conserving biological diversity, managing ecosystems, and testing ecological theories. On the other side, its past‐oriented, static, and idealistic approach has been criticized for subjectivity in determining restoration goals, inapplicability to dynamic ecosystems, and inability for restoring certain irreversible losses. Moreover, unpredictable sustainability of the restored ecosystems, which were modeled after its historical fidelity, adds our skepticism under the changing environment. This paper calls for a new paradigm of ecological restoration to the future. A future‐oriented restoration should (1) establish the ecosystems that are able to sustain in the future, not the past, environment; (2) have multiple alternative goals and trajectories for unpredictable endpoints; (3) focus on rehabilitation of ecosystem functions rather than recomposition of species or cosmetics of landscape surface; and (4) acknowledge its identity as a “value‐laden” applied science within economically and socially acceptable framework. Applicability of ecological theories to restoration practice is also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

AIMS: The need for biocompatible, biodegradable, and versatile biopolymers permeates many fields including environmental and food technology. The goal of the study presented here is to establish the utility of agricultural oils as an inexpensive carbon source to produce materials useful for biomedical materials and offer positive attributes in terms of green chemistry. METHODS AND RESULTS: Structural variants of the complex acylated polysaccharide, emulsan, secreted from Acinetobacter venetianus RAG-1, were biosynthesized in cultures supplemented with agricultural feedstocks to examine the feasibility of conversion of these substrates into value-added biopolymers. Acinetobacter venetianus produced chemically and biologically distinct emulsan variants in culture on soy molasses and tallow oil. These variants possess significant biological function, including macrophage activation and adjuvant activity, in similar range to that observed for the standard emulsan formed on ethanol-fed A. venetianus. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that this novel family of biopolymers can be produced in significant quantities from the readily available renewable agricultural feedstocks and the resulting structures and functions can be correlated to the chemistry of these feedstocks. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The significant quantities of agricultural oils produced annually represent an untapped source for bioconversion to valuable products. The results of this study confirm that the important polymer emulsan can be synthesized from this inexpensive carbon source.  相似文献

China has experienced rapid agricultural development over recent decades, accompanied by increased fertilizer consumption in croplands; yet, the trend and drivers of the associated nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain uncertain. The primary sources of this uncertainty are the coarse spatial variation of activity data and the incomplete model representation of N2O emissions in response to agricultural management. Here, we provide new data‐driven estimates of cropland‐N2O emissions across China in 1990–2014, compiled using a global cropland‐N2O flux observation dataset, nationwide survey‐based reconstruction of N‐fertilization and irrigation, and an updated nonlinear model. In addition, we have evaluated the drivers behind changing cropland‐N2O patterns using an index decomposition analysis approach. We find that China's annual cropland‐N2O emissions increased on average by 11.2 Gg N/year2 (p < .001) from 1990 to 2003, after which emissions plateaued until 2014 (2.8 Gg N/year2, p = .02), consistent with the output from an ensemble of process‐based terrestrial biosphere models. The slowdown of the increase in cropland‐N2O emissions after 2003 was pervasive across two thirds of China's sowing areas. This change was mainly driven by the nationwide reduction in N‐fertilizer applied per area, partially due to the prevalence of nationwide technological adoptions. This reduction has almost offset the N2O emissions induced by policy‐driven expansion of sowing areas, particularly in the Northeast Plain and the lower Yangtze River Basin. Our results underline the importance of high‐resolution activity data and adoption of nonlinear model of N2O emission for capturing cropland‐N2O emission changes. Improving the representation of policy interventions is also recommended for future projections.  相似文献

Intensive silvopastoral systems (ISS) are a sustainable alternative to monoculture systems (MS). The presence of trees and legumes improves animal welfare due to the increased food quality and quantity and the presence of shade while providing a variety of environmental services. As cattle behaviour is greatly affected by environmental conditions, knowledge on the behavioural trade-offs that cattle make to meet their demands while foraging in different grazing systems is important, as this will help us understand the perceived advantages of ISS. This pilot study assessed the behaviour of heifers in an ISS (n=8 heifers) and MS (n=8 heifers) in the Mexican tropics during the dry and rainy seasons, and its relationship with forage availability, mean travelled distance and the temperature humidity index (THI). In both seasons, daily foraging times were longer in the MS than the ISS (P<0.01). The duration of rumination was higher for ISS (P<0.01) and the duration of lying was higher for the dry season (P<0.05). The decrease in foraging times in relation to THI was significantly higher in the ISS than in the MS (mean slope±SE: ISS=−4.64±0.34; MS=−2.34±0.22; t=−14.20, P<0.001). The results suggest that the forage availability and access to shade in the ISS allow cattle to rest longer and increase rumination, whereas cattle in MS spend more time searching for food and foraging at times of the day were the temperatures were higher as a compensatory strategy, which potentially decreases cattle’s welfare and production qualities when compared with the ISS. In conclusion, ISS are likely to generate positive behavioural trade-offs that result in better welfare conditions and higher productive potential.  相似文献
