Shortly after the death, in 1971, of Cyril Burt, a prominent British psychologist, the authenticity of his accounts of intelligence
test results from the largest reported sample of MZA's (monozygotic twins reared apart) was challenged. Charges of fraud by
Burt's critics and countercharges by his supporters started an acrimonious battle of words in journals, books, and the mass
media that seesawed over the decades. It is still not resolved. The problematic ways in which the scientific community and
its major organizations and journal editors have dealt or failed to deal with the problem are discussed.

Recent studies have shown that body size is a heritable trait phenotypically correlated with several fitness components in
wild populations of the cactophilic fly Drosophila buzzatii. To obtain further information on size-related variation, heritabilities
as well as genetic and phenotypic correlations among size-related traits of several body parts (head, thorax and wings) were
estimated. The study was carried out on an Argentinean natural population in which size-related selection was previously detected.
The genetic parameters were estimated using offspring-parent regressions (105 families) in the laboratory G2 generation of a sample of wild flies. The traits were also scored in Wild-Caught Flies (WCF). Laboratory-Reared Flies (LRF)
were larger and less variable than WCF. Although heritability estimates were significant for all traits, heritabilities were
higher for thorax-wing traits than for head traits. Phenotypic and genetic correlations were all positive. The highest genetic
correlations were found between traits which are both functionally and developmentally related. Genetic and phenotypic correlations
estimated in the lab show similar correlation patterns (r = 0.49; TP = 0.02, Mantel's test). However, phenotypic correlations
were found to be typically larger in WCF than in LRF. The genetic correlation matrix estimated in the relatively homogeneous
lab environment is not simply a constant multiplicative factor of the phenotypic correlation matrix estimated in WCF.

This article discusses some historical and intellectual roots of American behaviorism in psychology and its anti-heredity,
environmentalist bias, as well as the early ‘justification’ for pure line theory in genetics and some interrelations between
the two fields. Next, I discuss the heritability concept, its promotion, its critique and the importance of distinguishing
it from, rather than confusing or conflating it with, the heredity concept. Then, briefly I consider some of the history and
problems associated with the intelligence concept, as well as the capital importance of biological controls in studies of
human heredity. And finally, I document the incredibility of The Bell Curve and the appalling inadequacy of its reception.

Natural selection on breeding time through postfledgling survival was investigated in a population of blue tits, Parus caeruleus, between 1993 and 1996. In particular, selection acting through large brood sizes among early breeders (fecundity-dependent selection) was separated from selection acting through fitness benefits unrelated to the numerical benefits of large brood sizes (fecundity-independent selection). There was evidence that natural selection favored early breeding in 1993 and 1995 (significantly so in 1993), whereas in 1994 there was a tendency for selection to be stabilizing. Analyses of selection gradients further showed that there was direct selection for both early breeding and large brood sizes in 1993. Experimentally delayed pairs produced a lower proportion of surviving young among their fledglings compared to early pairs, indicating that the seasonal fitness trend is a causal one and not caused by differences between early and late breeders in territory or individual quality. There was no evidence for significant heritability for four reproductive traits (clutch sizes, laying dates, hatching dates, and brood size at fledging) although repeatability values ranged from 0.26 to 0.53. The importance of year-specific selective regimes in the evolution of avian breedings times are discussed and a role for population density in this context is proposed. 相似文献

Heritability of body size in two experimentally created environments, representing good and poor feeding conditions, respectively, was estimated using cross-fostered collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis nestlings. Young raised under poor feeding conditions attained smaller body size (tarsus length) than their full-sibs raised under good feeding conditions. Parent-offspring regressions revealed lower heritability (h2) of body size under poor than under good feeding conditions. Hence, as the same set of parents were used in the estimation of h2 in both environments, this suggests environment-dependent change in additive genetic component of variance (VA), or that the genetic correlation between parental and poor offspring environment was less than that between parental and good offspring environment. However, full-sib analyses failed to find evidence for genotype-environment interactions, although the power of these tests might have been low. Full-sib heritabilities in both environments tended to be higher than estimates from parent-offspring regressions, indicating that prehatching or early posthatching common environment/maternal effects might have inflated full-sib estimates of VA. The effect of sibling competition on estimates of VA was probably small as the nestling size-hierarchy at day 2 posthatch was not generally correlated with size-hierarchy at fledging. Furthermore, there was no correlation between maternal body condition during the incubation and final size of offspring, indicating that direct maternal effects related to nutritional status were small. A review of earlier quantitative genetic studies of body size variation in birds revealed that in eight of nine cases, heritability of body size was lower in poor than in good environmental conditions. The main implication of this relationship will be a decreased evolutionary response to selection under poor environmental conditions. On the other hand, this will retard the loss of genetic variation by reducing the accuracy of selection and might help explain the moderate to high heritabilities of body-size traits under good environmental conditions. 相似文献

Deep-seeding and ethylene were found to stimulate extension growth of the first internode of intact wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings in darkness. Seedlings of Hon Mang Mai emerged from much deeper in the soil than the seedlings of the other varieties used and their first internodes elongated to a much greater extent in response to ethylene. Carbon dioxide slowed elongation of the first internode and inhibited ethylene action. Elongation of the first internode due to deep-seeding and ethylene treatment showed high heritabilities, suggesting a genetic basis underlying those traits. 相似文献

Summary In parent—offspring regressions, high heritability estimates of characters may simply be due to common environment: the resemblance between the living conditions of parents and their offspring in species showing restricted natal dispersal. In vole-eating Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus), the natal dispersal and breeding dispersal of adult females are wide (up to > 1000 km and > 500 km, respectively), whereas adult males are resident. We found that body measurements of 183 recruits born in western Finland were independent of parental age and vole abundance in the birth year. Early-laid eggs produced longer winged recruits than late-laid eggs. The wing lengths of the daughters showed a significant positive regression on the wing length of their mothers, but the removal of the maternal effect via laying date lowered this relationship. The development time of offspring to the first autumn might also be crucial for morphological characters of females in their later life. Significant regressions were not found between the wing length of the son and his father. The mother—daughter regression was small for laying date, but positive (p = 0.08) for clutch size. These results suggest low heritability in breeding and morphological characters of owls and this low heritability may enable plastic adjustment to optimize fitness at any stage in a fluctuating environment. Nonadditive genetic variance also creates variation between offspring characters that are not genetically correlated with the parents and may explain these low heritability estimates. 相似文献

Shared genetic and familial environmental causes for the associations among resting metabolic rate (RMR), fat-free mass (FFM), and fat mass (FM) were investigated in families participating in phase 2 of the Québec Family Study. A multivariate familial correlation model assessing the pattern of significant cross-trait correlations between family members (e.g., RMR in parents with FFM in offspring) was used to infer the etiology of the associations. For each of FM and FFM with RMR, significant sibling, parent-offspring, and intraindividual cross-trait correlations suggest the associations are familial. Furthermore, the lack of significant spouse cross-trait correlations suggests that the familial aggregation is primarily genetic. Bivariate heritability estimates suggest that as much as 45% to 50% of the shared variance between FFM and RMR may be genetic, and as much as 28% to 34% for FM and RMR. This study supports the notion that the gene(s) affecting each of FFM and FM also influence the RMR. Moreover, the lack of any familial associations between FFM and FM suggests that the effects of each body size component on RMR are independent, i.e., more than one genetic source on the RMR-body size association. The possibility that RMR is an oligogenic trait (i.e., more than one underlying genetic etiology) should be further investigated using more complex multivariate segregation methods until specific genes can be tested. 相似文献
