The seasonal cycle of Picromerus bidens L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is usually considered to be univoltine with an obligatory winter egg diapause. Seasonal adaptations of the species were studied in the laboratory and in field experiments. When reared under short-day photoperiodic conditions (L12:D12 and L14:D10), all females began to lay eggs synchronously soon after their emergence. However, in the females reared under long-day conditions (L18:D6 and L20:D4) and outdoors in June–July, oviposition was significantly delayed. This delay in reproduction induced by photoperiodic conditions and then spontaneously terminated was considered to be aestivation. Egg batches laid by females in the laboratory and in the field were kept at 25 °C for two months. From 30.8 to 93.8% of batches contained eggs which hatched without cold treatment between day 14 and 60 after oviposition. The proportion of eggs hatched was 17.7 to 20.9% in the short-day regimes, while it was significantly less (5.7 to 6.0%) under long-day conditions. It is concluded that in some eggs diapause is of low intensity and that if under natural conditions the first batches had been laid at the end of June, nymphs would have hatched at least from some eggs during the same season even without cold treatment. Such untimely hatching would have resulted in the death of nymphs and adults unprepared for overwintering. A photoperiodic response which induces aestivation in the early emerging adults in June–August may prevent early oviposition and occurrence of a second generation and thus maintains univoltinism in P. bidens.  相似文献

Seasonal records of nymphs of the water strider Aquarius paludum Fabricius (Heteroptera: Gerridae) at a waterway in Kochi prefecture, Japan (33°00′N to 33°30′N), in 2007, show that populations of new generation adults occur four or more times during the year, in mid and late May; late July to early August; September; and October to November. In laboratory experiments, more than 50% of adults are reproductive, irrespective of photoperiod, and this ratio increases to 80% even under a short‐day LD 11.5 : 13.5 h photocycle, which corresponds to the winter season at Kochi (33°N). There is a diminishing photoperiodic response in relation to the induction of diapause compared with measurements made in previous years (1995–1997), suggesting that reproduction may be possible over a much longer period in the near future (and even in winter) if local climate warming is sustained. A high proportion of males sampled in 2008 have small testes and a high proportion of females do not have mature oöcytes even in summer. This contrasts with earlier data showing that the testis volume index for the same period is greater in 1995–1997, and that 75% of females have mature oöcytes. These changes suggest that the Kochi‐Nankoku population of A. paludum is beginning to show partial aestivation. Overwintering adults of both sexes are found to have no mature flight muscles in October/November 2008. This is in marked contrast with earlier data from 1995 and 2004. Adults that are reared in the laboratory also show a lower flight propensity in response to shorter day lengths. The absence of mature flight muscles in the autumn and lower flight propensity under shorter days may indicate a cessation of dispersal between the summer habitats and overwintering sites on land far from the waterways. Taken together, these data suggest that populations of A. paludum in the Kochi‐Nankoku region are continuing to show adaptive changes, apparently in relation to global warming.  相似文献

Abstract. We report the results of a laboratory study of the aestivation of Hormogaster elisae to determine the nature of the inactive period (diapause or quiescence) and to evaluate the influence of soil moisture, temperature, season, and earthworm body weight on the process. The results showed that specimens of H. elisae underwent facultative diapause—paradiapause—characterized by the construction of aestivation chambers in which the animal coils up and its activity decreases. Soil moisture appeared to be the most important environmental factor involved in the onset of aestivation. Temperature and time of year also had some influence, but earthworm body weight appeared to have none. Aestivating earthworms showed a decrease of 41.6% in mean body weight. Once replaced in soil with 20% moisture content, they took 6.4±3.1 d to exit their chambers and another 6.5±3.6 d to recover their initial body weight.  相似文献

Animals that undergo prolonged dormancy experience minimal muscle disuse atrophy (MDA) compared to animals subjected to artificial immobilisation over shorter timeframes. An association between oxidative stress and MDA suggests that metabolic depression presumably affords dormant animals some protection against muscle disuse. Because aerobic metabolism is temperature sensitive, we proposed that MDA in dormant (aestivating) ectotherms would be enhanced at elevated temperatures. In the green‐striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata, the thermal sensitivity of skeletal muscle metabolic rate is muscle‐specific. We proposed that the degree of atrophy experienced during aestivation would correlate with the thermal sensitivity of muscle metabolic rate such that muscles with a relatively high metabolic rate at high temperatures would experience more disuse atrophy. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of temperature and aestivation on the extent of MDA in two functionally different muscles: the M. gastrocnemius (jumping muscle) and M. iliofibularis (non‐jumping muscle), in C. alboguttata aestivating at 24 or 30°C for 6 months. We compared a range of morphological parameters from muscle cross‐sections stained with succinic dehydrogenase to show that muscle‐specific patterns of disuse atrophy were consistent with the relative rates of oxygen consumption of those muscle types. However, despite muscle‐specific differences in thermal sensitivity of metabolic rate, aestivation temperature did not influence the extent of atrophy in either muscle. Our results suggest that the muscles of frogs aestivating at high temperatures are defended against additional atrophy ensuring protection of muscle function during long periods of immobilisation. J. Two aphidiine species were found to be associated with a thelaxine aphid, Kurisakia querciphila on Quercus serrata and Q. acutissima in Japan. One of them is identified as Papilloma luteum and redescribed, and the other is described as a new species, Praon kurisakiae. Sinoaphidius zhejiangensis is synonymized with P. luteum. Papilloma luteum aestivated within a unique shaped and black “diapausing mummy”. Aestivating adults of P. luteum emerging from “diapausing mummies” in the autumn were darker and smaller than non‐aestivating ones. The aphidiine parasitoids of Thelaxinae are reviewed; the systematic position of Papilloma and life cycles of K. querciphila and P. luteum are discussed.  相似文献

This paper reports on the disruption of normally effective ecological and behavioural barriers, at a contact zone on Monemvasia peninsula (Peloponnese, Greece), between parapatric populations of the land snail species Albinaria discolor and Albinaria campylauchen. Detected outcomes were the increase of gene flow between these two species at the contact zone, the occurrence of rare alleles, as well as the occurrence of morphologically and ethologically intermediate A. campylauchen specimens. Furthermore, there was high genetic variability along with deficiency of heterozygotes, probably due to inbreeding. Additionally, the study of mortality of these populations, during the adverse summer aestivation period, indicated that A. campylauchen individuals with an inappropriate combination of morphological and behavioural characteristics suffered heavily. The maladaptation and disadvantage of these specimens revealed the possible action of a postzygotic isolation mechanism between these two morphologically, molecularly and electrophoretically distinct species, that can, however, mate under laboratory conditions. Finally, the above situation is discussed in terms of exogenous versus endogenous selection.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the tubificid worm Rhyacodrilus hiemalis Ohtaka, the numerically dominant species of oligochaete in the littoral of Lake Biwa, was studied with special reference to seasonal vertical migration in the lake sediment. Monthly collections of lake sediment cores were made using PVC tubes. Core sections of sample sediments ranged from 76 to 117 cm. The vertical distribution of the worms showed no diurnal variation; therefore diel vertical migration was not evident. Seasonal downward migration started in April, and upward migration started in October. From December to March, almost all worms remained in the near-surface sediment layer (surface to 30 cm deep), while from July to September almost all worms remained deeper than 30 cm. However, few individuals migrated deeper than 90 cm. No discontinuous layers were found in grain size composition, water content, loss on ignition, particulate carbon, nitrogen or phosphorus. In deep sediment there was no free oxygen, as evidenced by negative ORP values. For 4 months in summer, R. hiemalis aestivated, probably utilizing anaerobic respiration. It appeared that R. hiemalis moved deeper in the sediment in response to sediment temperature, because sediment temperatures in the deep layers seemed to converge at around 20–21 °C in the summer months. The life history traits of seasonal vertical migration and summer aestivation perhaps arose as an adaptation to the climatic conditions accompanying the geographical origin of R. hiemalis, and they also serve to minimize predation risk during summer when most invertebrate predatory fishes are active.  相似文献

Mitochondrial respiration and activities of key metabolic enzymes from liver and white skeletal muscle were compared between control aquatic slender lungfish Protopterus dolloi , and those exposed to air for 5 months. Activities of citrate synthase, glycogen phosphorylase, phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase in liver were not affected by air-exposure. In muscle, air-exposure reduced citrate synthase and pyruvate kinase activities (relative to tissue wet mass) by 63 and 50%, respectively. Liver carnitine palmitoyl transferase activity (relative to mitochondrial protein) decreased by half following air-exposure, but there was no change in muscle. In mitochondria isolated from muscle, state 3 and state 4 respiration were reduced by 74 and 89%, respectively following air-exposure, but liver mitochondria were not affected. In liver, air-exposure increased activities of ornithine-urea cycle enzymes including glutamine synthase, carbamoyl-phosphate synthase III and arginase, by 1·9- to 4·2-fold. Carbamoyl-phosphate synthase III activity could not be detected in muscle, indicating that urea is not synthesized in this tissue. These data suggest that skeletal muscle metabolism is downregulated in air-exposure, conserving energy and protein during a period when the animals cannot forage. In contrast, ATP production capacities in the liver are maintained, and this may permit expensive urea biosynthesis to continue during aerial exposure.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic and morphometric differentiation were surveyed in Melitaea (Mellicta) athalia populations of the Carpathian Basin. This species has a wide distribution and exists under a wide variety of ecological conditions. It has two ecotypes in Hungary: with either one or two broods per year. It is of particular interest to reveal the main factors driving differentiation patterns in this species. Samples in our study were obtained from five Hungarian and one Transylvanian (Romanian) regions. Enzyme polymorphism, wing characters and male external genitalia were analysed using traditional morphometric methods. Statistical methods were optimized to compare morphological and genetic data. The results of genetic surveys revealed a clear regional pattern of differentiation in M. athalia. Moreover, the results of principal component analysis, Bayesian clustering and the dendrogram all suggested that the regions can be classified into two groups corresponding to the East or West zones of the Carpathian Basin. In contrast, differentiation between the two ecotypes was less expressed in the genetic variation of M. athalia. Results of the analyses conducted on phenotypic variation also suggested a regional pattern for both sets of morphometric characters (wings and external genitalia). At the same time, neither East–West regional division nor ecotype differentiation was detected in the morphometric studies.
