Thulborn (1978, Leihaia II ) suggests that ornithischian dinosaurs of the upper Stormberg Series (Late Triassic-Early Jurassic) of southern Africa underwent aestivation during an annual dry season. His argument, based on an interpretation of tooth function and replacement in heterodontosaurids, is: (1) unequivocal evidence of tooth replacement is not seen, and (2) piecemeal replacement of the dentition would be incompatible with maintenance of a fore-aft grinding function of the teeth; therefore, the entire dentition must have been rapidly replaced as a unit during periods of non-feeding, i.e. during aestivation. However, study of tooth wear patterns in Lanasaurus, Lycorhinus , and Heterodontosaurus show that jaw movements during mastication were orthal (open-and-close) and lateral to medial, not forwards and backwards. Differences in degree of tooth wear would not interfere with masticatory movements. Patterns of differential wear indicate that tooth replacement was not periodic but continuous, as in other reptiles. Zahnreihen , with a Z-spacing of about 3.0, are recognizable. Replacement ceased in mature individuals. The dentition shows adaptations for prolonging its effective life despite heavy wear. Differential tooth wear is incompatible with the idea of replacement of the entire dentition as a unit during an hypothesized period of aestivation. Thulborn's suggestion of aestivation in fabrosaurid ornithischians is also shown to be unlikely. 相似文献

Monthly changes in density and biomass of a Pila globosa population were estimated in the littoral area of the pond Idumban. Mean density of active snail was 10.4, equivalent to 76 g dry weight/m2 during 1973 and 6.5, equivalent to 45 g/m2 during 1974. Total population size of the snail decreased from 9.2 × 106 individuals, equivalent to 6.5 ton during 1973 to 6.3 × 106 snails, equivalent to 4.4 ton during 1974. The period from December to May represented the time of abundance and active growth. Mortality assessed from marking and recapture as well as from monthly changes in population density, averaged to 2.7 snails/m2/month or 20% of the density. Growth estimated by marking and recapture suggested that the snail required a period of over 4 years to attain a body (wet) weight of 35 g. Laboratory experiments revealed that young (<4 g), intermediate (4 g><24 g) and old (>24 g) P. globosa grew at the rate of 4.0, 1.5 and 0.3 mg dry weight/g live weight/day. Using these values and the size-wise population density data, net productivity of the snail was estimated as 74 and 40 g/m2/year in 1973 and 74, respectively. The snail exhibited an efficiency of 70% for absorption and 10% for conversion. Using these values, it was further possible to estimate rates of feeding and absorption for the population. Consumption amounted to 1039 g/m2 in 1973 and 560 g/m2 in 1974. The efficiencies of exploitation, gross and net productions were 21, 7 and 10%, respectively; ecological efficiency amounted to 1.4% only. 相似文献

Effects of aestivation on the energy budget of sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (Selenka) (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) 下载免费PDF全文
Apostichopus japonicus is a kind of temperate sea cucumbers, known to aestivate when water temperature rises above 20°C to 24.5°C. In this study, we measured the effects of aestivation on the energy utilization (i.e., energy allocation in growth, feces discharge, respiration and excretion) of A. japonicus with two different body weights (134.0 g ± 3.5 g and 73.6 g ± 2.2 g) at water temperature from 10°C to 30°C with an interval of 5°C. Noticeable variation in the energy utilization of sea cucumbers was observed in this study. During the non-aestivation period, energy deposit in growth was lower and the energy loss in feces accounted for the majority of the feeding energy. Under the threshold temperature, the feeding energy reduced and the proportion of energy deposit in growth became negative. During aestivation, sea cucumbers discontinued feeding energy, resulting in weight loss. Our study suggested that the ecological implication of aestivation in this species could lead to a model of energy saving during the long-term hot period. 相似文献

First evidence for photoperiodic regulation of the life cycle in a millipede species, Polydesmus angustus (Diplopoda: Polydesmidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The hypothesis that the periods of dormancy previously described in the millipede Polydesmus angustus may be photoperiodically induced diapauses was tested experimentally. In this species, biennial individuals exhibit two successive periods of dormancy: aestivation in the penultimate stadium (stadium VII) and reproductive dormancy in the adults, which emerge in autumn. It was first established that the reproductive dormancy is not a thermally controlled state of quiescence. When adults emerging in autumn were kept at 16 °C under natural photoperiod, their reproduction was delayed for several months in comparison with adults emerging in spring at similar temperatures. This indicates that the reproductive dormancy begins with a period of diapause. Further experiments provided evidence of a photoperiodic induction of the adult diapause. When millipedes were reared under short day length (L:D 12:12 h) throughout their development, they required more time to reproduce than millipedes reared under long day length (L:D 16:8 h) at the same temperatures. Photoperiod influenced reproduction in females, but no significant effects were detected in adult males. On the other hand, stadium VII was markedly longer at L:D 16:8 h than at L:D 12:12 h in both sexes, which strongly suggests that aestivation is also induced by photoperiod. However, the effects on the duration of stadium VII varied among individuals, some of which showed no response to long days. The relationship between mosquito 4th instar larval desiccation and survival to adulthood was explored by three methods in the laboratory. Two colonies of Anopheles arabiensis and one of Anopheles gambiae were studied. We found significant differences in tolerance to desiccation among all three stocks suggesting an intra‐ and interspecific genetic component to desiccation tolerance. An. arabiensis KGB, originating from Zimbabwe about 1975, had a much‐reduced desiccation tolerance compared to An. gambiae G3, colonized in the Gambia in 1975, and An. arabiensis DONGOLA which originated in Sudan in 2004. Individuals of the G3 stock survived desiccation of times up to 40 min with survival of 0.52. The degree of difference in tolerance between G3 and DONGOLA was smallest and was detected by one of three experimental methods. Mass losses of individuals that were weighed individually and survived to adulthood averaged 27% and 29% for G3 and DONGOLA and 20% for the less tolerant KGB stock, respectively. Such differences in survival in transiently dry larval habitats may account in part for differences in the distribution of these species and karyotypes. 相似文献

In response to environmental stress (low water, low oxygen) snails sharply suppress their metabolic rate, a process that is coordinated at the molecular level by reversible protein phosphorylation of key enzymes and functional proteins. Factors affecting protein kinase activity are, therefore, critical to metabolic suppression. Changes in the concentration of protein kinase second messenger compounds were followed over the first 24 h of aestivation and anoxia exposure in the terrestrial snail Otala lactea (Muller) (Pulmonata, Helicidae). The results showed declining concentrations of cyclic AMP over the first 24 h of anoxia exposure and aestivation in foot. Cyclic AMP concentrations in hepatopancreas transiently decreased with the lowest concentration observed at 4 h in both anoxic and aestivating animals. A transient increase in foot muscle cyclic GMP concentrations was apparent 4 h after the start of aestivation whereas a slow, steady increase was seen in anoxic foot muscle. Foot muscle 1,4,5-inositol triphosphate (IP3) concentrations decreased transiently during anoxia exposure and aestivation. Hepatopancreas IP3 concentrations were significantly lower in 24 h anoxic snails and foot IP3 concentrations were significantly lower in 24 h aestivating snails. Kinetic characterization of purified PKA catalytic subunit was also performed. Snail PKA catalytic subunit had an absolute requirement for Mg2+ ion but was inhibited at Mg2+ concentrations above 0.5 mM. Increasing concentrations of neutral salts and phosphate also inhibited activity although the inhibition by phosphate appeared to be specific since the inhibition constant (I50 = 39 mM) was much lower than that of the neutral salts (I50 240 mM). The enzyme exhibited a broad pH optimum between pH 6.5–8.5. Arrhenius plots gave an activation energy of 13.3 kcal/mol corresponding to a Q10 value of 2.3. 条纹小斑蛾Thyrassia penangae(Moor)是乌蔹莓(Japanese cayratia)的重要害虫,在南昌1年发生4~5代,以老熟幼虫结茧越冬。由于该虫各世代总有极少部分个体进入滞育,少数进入越夏的个体1年只发生2代或3代。羽化时间多出现在上午7~10时,羽化后当日或次日下午交配,交配时间集中在下午3~6时,交配一般可持续12个h左右。成虫羽化后需取食花蜜做补充营养才能充分产卵。产配后次日即可产卵。第1代成虫常将卵数十粒聚产于幼嫩叶片的背面,以后各代主要聚产于花蕾上,平均每雌产卵量为43粒。幼虫为4龄。第1代主要取食叶芽、幼枝及嫩叶,以后各代主要取食花蕾。在自然条件下各虫态发育历期:卵为4~7d;幼虫为10~14d;非滞育的茧期(指幼虫结茧后的预蛹至成虫羽化的日期)为8~11d,越夏茧期为32~40d,越冬茧期为205~224d。成虫寿命为3~13d。 相似文献
