Reconstructing the feeding ecology of fossil fishes can be difficult, but new mechanical approaches enable reasonably reliable inferences by comparison with living forms. Here, the feeding ecology of one of the most iconic and abundant actinopterygians of the Early Jurassic, Dapedium, is explored through detailed anatomical study and functional analyses of jaw mechanics. Mathematical models derived from modern teleost functional morphology are applied, to ascertain the transmission of force through the jaws of Dapedium. A number of features not previously identified in the genus are described, and the dentition is described in full for the first time. The analysis of the functional morphology of Dapedium, in combination with its jaw anatomy and dentition, indicates that the genus was well adapted to a durophagous feeding habit, although indirect evidence suggests a more generalist feeding mode. Being a generalist durophage may explain the success of the genus in the aftermath of the end‐Triassic extinction event and its radiation in the Early Jurassic, as indicated by the ubiquity of Dapedium fossils throughout the Lower Lias.  相似文献

凋落物分解主场效应是指凋落物具有在其生长的栖息地比在别的生境分解更快的特征,土壤生物的特化作用被认为是主场效应的产生机理.主场效应是除基质质量和物理化学环境外控制凋落物分解的重要因子,可影响模拟精度的8%.凋落物分解主场效应驱动机制的深入研究对促进分解模型中纳入生物因子,提高区域尺度模拟精度具有重要作用.虽然时间和基质质量可导致主场效应强度变化,但不能全面解释主场效应强度差异特别是负效应的产生.通过分析凋落物分解过程中土壤生物的作用机理,指出凋落物分解主场效应的土壤生物驱动可能包括土壤微生物的调节性适应,土壤动物的后期插入以及物理化学环境的间接影响.为深入了解主场效应土壤生物驱动机制,更好地模拟凋落物分解过程,提出延长凋落物分解交互移置实验时间,拓展实验空间,结合室内模拟分析和构建分解模型等方法与途径.  相似文献

Niche expansion and shifts are involved in the response and adaptation to environmental changes. However, it is unclear how niche breadth evolves and changes toward higher‐quality resources. Myotis pilosus is both an insectivore and a piscivore. We examined the dietary composition and seasonality in M. pilosus and the closely related Myotis fimbriatus using next‐generation DNA sequencing. We tested whether resource variation or resource partitioning help explain the dietary expansion from insects to fish in M. pilosus. While diet composition and diversity varied significantly between summer and autumn, the proportion of fish‐eating individuals did not significantly change between seasons in M. pilosus. Dietary overlap between M. pilosus and M. fimbriatus during the same seasons was much higher than within individual species across seasons. We recorded a larger body size, hind foot length, and body mass in M. pilosus than in M. fimbriatus and other insectivorous trawling bats from China. Similar morphological differences were found between worldwide fishing bats and nonfishing trawling bats. Our results suggest that variation in insect availability or interspecific competition may not play important roles in the dietary expansion from insects to fish in M. pilosus. Myotis pilosus has morphological advantages that may help it use fish as a diet component. The morphological advantage promoting dietary niche evolution toward higher quality resources may be more important than variation in the original resource and the effects of interspecific competition.  相似文献

In many gynodioecious species, sex determination involves both cytoplasmic male‐sterility (CMS) genes and nuclear genes that restore male function. Differences in fitness among genotypes affect the dynamics of those genes, and thus that of gynodioecy. We used a molecular marker to discriminate between hermaphrodites with and without a CMS gene in gynodioecious Raphanus sativus. We compared fitness through female function among the three genotypes: females, hermaphrodites with the CMS gene and those without it. Although there was no significant difference among the genotypes in seed size, hermaphrodites without the CMS gene produced significantly more seeds, and seeds with a higher germination rate than the other genotypes, suggesting no fitness advantage for females and no benefit to bearing the CMS gene. Despite the lack of fitness advantage for females in the parameter values we estimated, a theoretical model of gynodioecy shows it can be maintained if restorer genes impose a cost paid in pollen production. In addition, we found that females invest more resources into female reproduction than hermaphrodites when they become larger. If environmental conditions enable females to grow larger this would facilitate the dynamics of CMS genes.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) contains the most variable genes in vertebrates, but despite extensive research, the mechanisms maintaining this polymorphism are still unresolved. One hypothesis is that MHC polymorphism is a result of balancing selection operating by overdominance, but convincing evidence for overdominant selection in natural populations has been lacking. We present strong evidence consistent with MHC-specific overdominance in a free-living population of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) in northernmost Europe. In this population, where just two MHC alleles were observed, MHC heterozygous fish had a lower parasite load, were in better condition (as estimated by a fatness indicator) and had higher survival under stress than either of the homozygotes. Conversely, there was no consistent association between these fitness measures and assumedly neutral microsatellite variability, indicating an MHC-specific effect. Our results provide convincing empirical evidence consistent with the notion that overdominance can be an important evolutionary mechanism contributing to MHC polymorphism in wild animal populations. They also support a recent simulation study indicating that the number of alleles expected to be maintained at an MHC loci can be low, even under strong heterozygote advantage.  相似文献

Abstract Vicia faba plants grown under water deficit were found to have guard cells considerably smaller than those of plants grown under well-watered conditions. Stomala of plants adapted to drought conditions have been observed in past studies to maintain opening at plant water potentials lower than those of plants not so adapted. By employing the geometric interpretation of the mechanical advantage (Wu, Sharpe & Spence, 1985), an anatomical/mechanical basis was found that helps explain how such opening in drought conditions can occur. The geometry and resulting mechanical properties of small stomata, in contrast to larger stomata, give them the capability of opening or maintaining open pores with lower guard cell turgor pressures, relative to the turgor of the surrounding epidermal cells.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown remarkable rostrocaudal selectivity by regenerating motoneurons to the rat serratus anterior (SA) muscle after freezing, crushing, or sectioning the long thoracic (LT) nerve. The LT nerve contains motoneurons from both the sixth and seventh cervical spinal nerves (C6 and C7), with C6 motoneurons as the major source of innervation throughout the muscle, and with C7 motoneurons innervating a larger percentage of muscle fibers caudally than rostrally. To determine if synaptic competition can play a role in neuromuscular topography, both the LT nerve and the branch carrying C6 (rostral) motoneurons to the LT nerve were crushed in newborn rats. This approach provides a temporal advantage to regenerating C7 (caudal) motoneurons. After an initial period during which C7 motoneurons reinnervated a larger proportion of muscle fibers than normal in all SA muscle sectors, C6 motoneurons regained their original proportion of rostral muscle fibers. Caudally, however, C7 motoneurons maintained an expanded territory. With this two-site crush method, the number of C6 motoneurons that reinnervate the SA muscle was significantly decreased from normal, whereas the number of C7 motoneurons remained the same. It is concluded that when C7 motoneurons are given a temporal advantage, synaptic specificity can be altered transiently in rostral muscle sectors and permanently in caudal sectors, and this is correlated with a disproportionate loss of C6 motoneurons. Moreover, this may be an important model for studies of synaptic competition, where terminals destined to be eliminated can be identified beforehand. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Darwin's fecundity advantage model is often cited as the cause of female biased size dimorphism, however, the empirical studies of lifetime selection on male and female body size that would be required to demonstrate this are few. As a component of a study relating sexual size dimorphism to lifetime selection in natural populations of the female size-biased waterstrider Aquarius remigis (Hemiptera: Gerridae), we estimated coefficients for daily fecundity selection, longevity selection, and lifetime fecundity selection acting on female body size and components of body size for two consecutive generations. Daily fecundity was estimated using females confined in field enclosures and reproductive survival was estimated by twice-weekly recaptures. We found that daily fecundity selection favored females with longer total length through direct selection acting on abdomen length. Longevity selection favored females with smaller total length. When daily fecundity and reproductive longevity were combined to estimate lifetime fecundity we found significant balancing selection acting on total length in both years. The relationship between daily fecundity and reproductive longevity also reveals a significant cost of reproduction in one of two years. We relate these selection estimates to previous estimates of sexual selection on male body size and consider the relationship between contemporary selection and sexual size dimorphism.  相似文献
