Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) is a tropical insect (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) that develops in Vigna unguiculata (Walp) seeds. In this beetle, there are two distinct adult forms that differ in their morphology, physiology and behaviour, the flight form and the flightless form. The development of C. maculatus is analyzed in a traditional store in Niger. During the dry season, 6 to 7 generations of the flightless form develop in the store. When the atmospheric water content increases during the rainy season, adults of the flight form appear and escape from the store. Experimental studies have shown that the adult polymorphism is induced during post-embryonic development and depends on prevailing abiotic factors during this period. The proportion of flight from adults is high when larvae develop in moist seeds (14–15% of water content). Under dry conditions (6–7% of water content) only flightless adult forms emerge from the seeds. Temperatures during development also influence adult polymorphism. In thermoperiodic conditions with 12–13% seed water content, the proportion of flight from adults increases with increasing duration of the thermophase. However, at low temperatures, a high proportion of flightless adult forms emerge, regardless of seed water content. The adaptive importance of these two abiotic factors on polymorphism induction is examined in this study.
Résumé Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) est un Coléoptère Bruchidae tropical qui se développe aux dépens des graines de Vigna unguiculata. Les adultes présentent un polymorphisme; il y a en effet deux formes, la forme voilière et la forme non voilière, distinctes par des critères morphologiques, physiologiques et comportementaux. L'évolution des populations de C. maculatus a été suivie pendant toute la saison sèche et le début de la saison des pluies dans la région de Niamey au Niger (13° LN) à l'intérieur d'un grenier traditionnel. Pendant toute la saison sèche, 6 à 7 générations de C. maculatus de la forme non voilière se succèdent à l'intérieur du grenier. Les adultes de la forme voilière, très actifs, apparaissent surtout au cours de la saison des pluies lorsque la teneur en eau de l'atmosphère et la teneur en eau des graines augmentent. Les études expérimentales réalisées au laboratoire montrent que le polymorphisme imaginal est induit au cours du développement post-embryonnaire et dépend des conditions climatiques dans lesquelles celui-ci a lieu. Le taux d'adultes de la forme voilière est élevé lorsque les larves se développent dans des graines à forte teneur en eau (14 ou 15%). Lorsque la teneur en eau des graines est faible (6 à 7%), il n'y a émergence que d'adultes de la forme non voilière. Lorsque la teneur en eau des graines est comprise entre 12 et 13%, le taux d'adultes de la forme voilière s'accroit et varie avec la durée de la thermophase. A basse température il y a toujours émergence d'adultes de la forme non voilière, quelle que soit la teneur en eau des graines. L'influence de ces deux facteurs abiotiques sur l'induction du polymorphisme imaginal joue probablement un rôle important dans les mécanismes adaptatifs permettant le maintien de cette espèce en zone tropicale.

In the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of control and chronic adult periodontitis (CAP) patients there is a spontaneous release of O2- radicals from polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). The addition of the exogenous stimuli phorbol myrystate acetate (PMA) decreased the O2- formation in control GCF, while in CAP patients produced a marked enhancement of O2- generation.

The circulating PMN of control subjects did not show a spontaneous O2- formation, differently from CAP patients. On the contrary, a similar O2- production was measured when the circulating PMN were stimulated with PMA.

Moreover, the antioxidant activity measured in 10μl of cell free gingival supernatant (GS) of control and CAP patients had the same values by inhibiting 12.6% and 18.9% respectively of the O2- formation supported by a xanthine/xanthine oxidase system.

Probably, the protective or destructive effect of PMN in GCF of CAP patients depends on the variations of the rate of O2- formation in respect to the intrinsic antioxidant property of GS.  相似文献

Female Epiphyas postvittana (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) moths were able to lay fertile eggs without feeding, but they require water to achieve their full reproductive potential. Fecundity of moths given water from emergence was not different from that of moths fed with 30% honey solution. Deprivation of feeding during the early stage (up to three days after emergence) showed no significant decrease in fecundity provided that honey solution was available from the age of four days after emergence. Starved moths laid less than 30% of the number of eggs laid by those fed with honey solution or water. Fecundity was correlated with moth weight at emergence when moths were fed with water or honey solution, but not when no food or water was provided. Moths of both sexes fed on honey solution copulated less frequently, lost body weight at a lower rate and had a greater longevity, compared with those fed with water or nothing. These results are discussed in relation to the reproductive strategy of this species.
Zusammenfassung Weibliche Motten der Art Epiphyas postvittana (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) legten fruchtbare Eier ohne Nahrung aufzunehmen, brauchten jedoch Wasser, um ihr volles Fortpflanzung — Potential zu erreichen. Fruchtbarkeit von Motten, denen Wasser von der Zeit des Schlüpfens an gegeben wurde, unterschied sich nicht von der Fruchtbarkeit der Motten, die mit einer 30 prozentigen Honiglösung gefüttert wurden. Nahrungsentzug während der frühen Entwicklung (bis zu drei Tagen nach Schlüpfen) führte nicht zu einer Reduktion der Fruchtbarkit, vorausgesetzt dass Honiglösung von einem Alter von vier Tagen nach Schlüpfen angeboten wurde. Hungernde Motten legten weniger als 30% der Eier als mit Honiglösung oder Wasser gefütterte Motten. Fruchtbarkeit war korreliert mit dem Gewicht der Motten zur Zeit des Schlüpfeus, wenn die Motten mit Wasser oder Honiglösung gefüttert wurden, jedoch nicht, wenn weder Nahrung noch Wasser angeboten wurde. Mit Honiglösung gefütterte Motten beiderlei Geschlechts kopulierten weniger häufig, verloren Gewicht langsamer und lebten langer als mit Wasser oder nicht gefütterte Motten. Die Ergebnisse werden diskutiert in Bezug auf die Fortpflanzungsstrategie der Art.

Adult reproductive performance is linked to the period of feeding done by the final instar larva after attainment of a larval critical weight (LCW). The highest weight attained by a final instar larva is referred to as the larval maximum weight (LMW) and is the onset of the pre-pupal period. The relationships between LCW, pupal weight (PW) and adult weight (AW) are described as functions of the LMW. In the leafroller Cnephasia jactatana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) LCW was dependent on larval size and was approximately 75% of the mean LMW. LCW was about 29 mg and 36 mg for male and female larvae of 1.18 mm and 1.20 mm head-capsule width, respectively. Over three successive generations of laboratory rearing, PW was approximately 30% and 25% lower than the LMW for males and females, respectively. AW was consistently about 50% and 40% lower than the PW for males and females, respectively. The decrease in weight from LMW to PW was named as the constant DP and found to be 0.3 for males and 0.25 for females. The total decrease from LMW to AW was the constant DA and was 0.6 for males and 0.5 for females. The duration of the latent feeding period was positively correlated to PW and AW. LCW may be used to derive quality indices that describe and predict pupal and adult performance.
Résumé Les performances reproductives sont liées à la période d'alimentation du dernier stade larvaire après l'obtention d'un poids critique (LCW). Le poids maximal atteint au dernier stade larvaire est défini comme le poids larvaire maximal (LMW), il correspond au début de la période prénymphale. Les relations entre poids de la chrysalide (PW) et poids de l'audulte AW) sont présentées comme des fonctions de LMW). Chez Cnephasia jactatana Walker (Lep. Tortricidae), LCW dépend de la taille de la chenille et correspond à environ 75% de la valeur moyenne de LMW. LCW est respectivement de 29 mg et 36 mg pour les chenilles mâles et femelles dont les capsules céphaliques ont 1,18 et 1,20 mm. Pour 3 générations successives, PW est environ 30% et 25% inférieur à LMW des mâles et des femelles. La régression du poids de LMW à PW est désignée comme la constante DP et vaut 0,3 pour les mâles et 0,25 pour les femelles. La régression de LMW à AW est désignée comme la régression DM et vaut 0,6 pour les mâles et 0,5 pour les femelles. La durée de la période d'alimentation latente est liée positivement à PW et AW. LCW peut être utilisé comme indice dérivé décrivant et prédisant les potentialités nymphales et imaginales.

Bile and serum samples were collected from calves with an implanted cannula throughout a 20-week period of infection with Fasciola hepatica. Using indirect fluorescent antibody labelling and plastic-embedded sections of juvenile and adult flukes as antigens, estimates were made of the relative concentrations of IgG and IgA specific for fluke tegumental and gut antigens in the samples of serum and bile. In serum, antibodies against juvenile (t1) tegument and gut antigens reached peak concentrations 4–6 weeks postinfection and declined slowly thereafter as flukes became established in the bile ducts. IgG against adult tegument (t2) antigens appeared in the serum 6 weeks after infection, but no IgA against t2 was detected. In the bile, both IgG and IgA titres against t1 and gut antigens rose to peak values at 4–6 weeks after infection, but there was no activity against t2 antigen. The Ig levels in bile were considerably lower than in serum. Much more IgA relative to IgG occurred in bile as compared to serum (IgG/IgA ratio in serum was 16–32, in bile 1–2) suggesting a role for IgA in defence at mucosal surfaces. Comparison of the antibody profiles in bile and serum suggested that IgG in the bile was derived from circulating IgG whereas IgA may have been preferentially concentrated in the bile.  相似文献

Knopf P. M. and Soliman M. 1980. Effects of host endocrine gland removal on the permissive status of laboratory rodents to infection by Schistosoma mansoni. International Journal for Parasitology, 10: 197–204. The capacity of Schistosoma mansoni to complete its life cycle was compared in CD-1 mice (permissive hosts) and Sprague-Dawley rats (nonpermissive hosts) from which the pituitary gland had been removed prior to infection with cercariae. Except for a modest decrease in egg burden, none of the parameters of worm life cycle assessed were affected in hypophysectomized mice. In contrast, all these parameters were affected in hypophysectomized rats, e.g. onset of adult worm elimination was delayed, worm development improved, oviposition increased and miracidia developed. Effects of removal from rats of the thyroid/parathyroid glands on the parasite life cycle were similar to hypophysectomy; adrenalectomy or gonadectomy were without affect. Differences between thyroidectomized and thymectomized rats are discussed. It is concluded that host hormones contribute to the nonpermissive status of rats to Schistosoma mansoni infections.  相似文献

Reduction of a cytochrome b following excitation by a single, short, near-saturating light flash has been demonstrated in Chromatium vinosum chromatophores. The extent of reduction is increased by addition of antimycin. The cytochrome has an α-band maximum at 562 nm in the presence of antimycin.The cytochrome b reduction is most readily observed in the presence of antimycin at high redox potential when cytochrome c-555 is oxidised before excitation. Under these conditions the half-time for reduction is about 20 ms, and the extent is about 0.5 mol of cytochrome b reduced per mol of reaction center oxidised. This extent of reduction is observed on the first flash-excitation from the dark-adapted state, and there was no indication that the reaction center quinone acceptor complex acted as a two-electron accumulating system. With cytochrome c-555 reduced before excitation, the extent of cytochrome b reduction is approximately halved. The factors which result in substoichiometric cytochrome b reduction are not yet understood.Agents which appear to inhibit primary acceptor oxidation by the secondary acceptor (UHDBT, PHDBT, DDAQQ, HOQNO, o-phenanthroline), inhibit reduction of the cytochrome b. DBMIB inhibits cytochrome b reduction but does not appear to inhibit primary acceptor oxidation.These observations confirm that a cytochrome b receives electrons delivered from the primary acceptor complex, and indicate that the photoreduced cytochrome b is reoxidised via an antimycin-sensitive pathway.  相似文献

The relative toxicities of particulate beryllium phosphate, soluble beryllium sulphate and a beryllium sulphosalicylate complex to a rat liver parencymal derived cell line have been examined in culture. Due to the propensity of beryllium salts to form beryllium phosphate in solution the incubation medium used was free of inorganic phosphate. Cell death measured by the loss of cellular lactate dehydrogenase into the medium can be produced within 76 h from beryllium phosphate and beryllium sulphosalicylate or 48 h from beryllium sulphate provided the cells have, irrespective of the form of added beryllium, taken up a minimum of 2--5 nmol Be/10(6) cells. Whilst beryllium phosphate was readily taken up as a particle, beryllium complexed with excess sulphosalicylate was not so markedly accumulated by the cells except possibly by formation of small amounts of beryllium phosphate in the medium as a result of inorganic phosphate lost from the cells. The extent of beryllium uptake from beryllium sulphate quantitatively most resembled that observed for beryllium phosphate but was largely independent of beryllium phosphate formation in the medium and not accompanied by the uptake of the SO42- anion. However, the accumulation of beryllium derived from beryllium sulphate did appear to be associated with the production of a sedimentable from believed most probably to be colloidal beryllium hydroxide. The uptake of all forms of beryllium was temperature sensitive and metabolic inhibitor studies and treatment of the cells with trypsin or neuraminidase supported the view that the distinct behaviour of beryllium derived from beryllium sulphate may be related to the enhanced toxicity of this form both under the conditions used and when administered to experimental animals.  相似文献

Delayed fluorescence from Rhodopseudomonas viridis membrane fragments has been studied using a phosphoroscope employing single, short actinic flashes, under conditions of controlled redox potential and temperature. The emission spectrum shows that delayed fluorescence is emitted by the bulk, antenna bacteriochlorophyll. The energy for delayed fluorescence, however, must be stored in a reaction-center complex including the photooxidized form (P+) of the primary electron-donor (P) and the photoreduced form (X?) of the primary electron-acceptor. This is shown by the following observations: (1) Delayed luminescence is quenched (a) at low redox potentials which allow cytochromes to reduce P+ rapidly after the flash, (b) at higher redox potentials which, by oxidizing P chemically, prevent the photochemical formation of P+X?, and (c) upon transfer of an electron from X? to a secondary acceptor, Y. (2) Under conditions that prevent the reduction of P+ by cytochromes and the oxidation of X? by Y, the decay kinetics of delayed fluorescence are identical with those of P+X?, as measured from optical absorbance changes.The main decay route for P+X? under these conditions has a rate-constant of approximately 103 s?1. In contrast, a comparison of the intensities of delayed and prompt fluorescence indicates that the process in which P+X? returns energy to the bulk bacteriochlorophyll has a rate-constant of 3.7 s?1, at 295 °K and pH 7.8. The decay kinetics of P+X? and delayed fluorescence change little with temperature, whereas the intensity of delayed fluorescence increases with increasing temperature, having an activation energy of 12.5 kcal · mol?1. We conclude that the main decay route involves tunneling of an electron from X? to P+, without the promotion of P to an excited state. Delayed fluorescence requires such a promotion, followed by transfer of energy to the bulk bacteriochlorophyll, and this combination of events is rare. The activation energy, taken with potentiometric data, indicates that the photochemical conversion of PX to P+X? results in increases of both the energy and the entropy of the system, by 16.6 kcal · mol?1 and 8.8 cal · mol?1 · deg?1. The intensity of delayed fluorescence depends strongly on the pH; the origin of this effect remains unclear.  相似文献
