Content of p‐coumaric (PCA) and ferulic (FA) acid was determined by the HPLC method in fourteen forbs with a potential utilization as forages (range of nutrient content per kg DM: 100 to 244gCP, 339 to 528 g NDF and 180–369 g ADF. PCA and FA were determined after methanol extraction in four fractions: free phenolic acids extracted into ether, ester‐bound phenolic acids after alkaline hydrolysis, glycoside‐bound phenolic acids after acid hydrolysis, and cell wall‐bound phenolic acids after alkaline hydrolysis of the solid residue after the extraction with methanol.

Cell wall‐bound phenols were quantitatively the most important fraction (50% of total PCA and 47% of total FA, respectively). The differences among plant species in total PCA plus FA content were significant (F‐value 775, P < 0.01). The range of total phenol content was 31.3 to 416.3 mg/100g DM, the overall mean was 84 mg/100g DM.

Content of phenolic acids was correlated neither with ADF, NDF or ADL content (R 2 = 1–3%, P > 0.05) nor with CP degradability (R 2 = 3% and R 2 = 1% for PCA and FA, respectively, P > 0.05).

95.4% and 30.9% of total PCA, and 98.3% and 72.5% of total FA disappeared in the rumen from the sample of Glechoma hederacea (species with the highest phenol content) and from the sample of Galium aparine (species with low phenol content), respectively, within the four hour incubation interval.

It is presumed that in comparison with grasses, PCA and FA concentration in tested forbs represents a much lower risk in potential ruminant nutrition.  相似文献

The state-of-the-art feed-forward control of active hand prostheses is rather poor. Even dexterous, multi-fingered commercial prostheses are controlled via surface electromyography (EMG) in a way that enforces a few fixed grasping postures, or a very basic estimate of force. Control is not natural, meaning that the amputee must learn to associate, e.g., wrist flexion and hand closing. Nevertheless, recent literature indicates that much more information can be gathered from plain, old surface EMG. To check this issue, we have performed an experiment in which three amputees train a Support Vector Machine (SVM) using five commercially available EMG electrodes while asked to perform various grasping postures and forces with their phantom limbs. In agreement with recent neurological studies on cortical plasticity, we show that amputees operated decades ago can still produce distinct and stable signals for each posture and force. The SVM classifies the posture up to a precision of 95% and approximates the force with an error of as little as 7% of the signal range, sample-by-sample at 25 Hz. These values are in line with results previously obtained by healthy subjects while feed-forward controlling a dexterous mechanical hand. We then conclude that our subjects could finely feed-forward control a dexterous prosthesis in both force and position, using standard EMG in a natural way, that is, using the phantom limb.  相似文献

During the upsurge of the introduced predatory Nile perch in Lake Victoria in the 1980s, the zooplanktivorous Haplochromis ( Yssichromis ) pyrrhocephalus nearly vanished. The species recovered coincident with the intense fishing of Nile perch in the 1990s, when water clarity and dissolved oxygen levels had decreased dramatically due to increased eutrophication. In response to the hypoxic conditions, total gill surface in resurgent H. pyrrhocephalus increased by 64%. Remarkably, head length, eye length, and head volume decreased in size, whereas cheek depth increased. Reductions in eye size and depth of the rostral part of the musculus sternohyoideus, and reallocation of space between the opercular and suspensorial compartments of the head may have permitted accommodation of larger gills in a smaller head. By contrast, the musculus levator posterior, located dorsal to the gills, increased in depth. This probably reflects an adaptive response to the larger and tougher prey types in the diet of resurgent H. pyrrhocephalus . We investigate the evolution of an individual's willingness to invest in a public good (what we call, helping) in a patch‐structured population with limited natal dispersal. We assume that an individual's decision to invest is informed by its dispersal status: an individual makes one decision given it is native to the patch on which it breeds, and is free to make a different decision given that it is not native to the patch on which it breeds. Unlike previous work, we assume that investment in the public good, and the public good, itself, both have a large effect on individual fecundity. Kin selection analysis reveals that only extreme investment decisions (i.e. ‘always invest’ or ‘never invest’) can be evolutionarily stable. Numerical results suggest that the evolutionary instability of the ‘never invest’ phenotype (what we call, complete nonhelping) implies the evolutionary stability of ‘always invest’ (what we call, complete helping). In addition, numerical results show that bistability of extreme phenotypes is possible, indicating that the adaptive significance of altruism, in this context, is greater than has been previously recognized. Numerical results are supported by computer simulation, and results, themselves, are briefly discussed in a concluding section.  相似文献

The physical and sensory characteristics of tomato fruits (cf. Gajc-Wolska et al.: Physical and sensory characteristics of the fruits …, this issue) were supplemented by total sugars and titratable acid analysis and flavor. The instrumental and sensory methods were highly statistically correlated. The social, health, and economic challenges of a steadily increasing aging population demand the use of appropriate translational animal models to address questions like healthy aging, vaccination strategies, or potential interventions during the aging process. Due to their genetic proximity to humans, especially nonhuman primates (NHPs) with a relatively short generation period compared to humans, qualify as excellent animal models for these purposes. The use of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in gerontology research steadily increased over the last decades, yet important information about their aging parameters are still missing. We therefore aimed to characterize their aging immune system by comprehensive flow cytometric phenotyping of blood immune cells from juvenile, adult, aging, and geriatric animals. Aged and geriatric animals displayed clear signs of immunosenescence. A decline in CD4/CD8 ratio, increased expression of HLA-DR and PD-1, higher frequencies of CD95+ memory cells, alterations in cytokine secretion, and a decline in the proliferative capacity proved T cell senescence in aging marmosets. Also, the B cell compartment was affected by age-related changes: while overall B cell numbers remained stable with advancing age, expression of the activation marker CD80 increased and immunoglobulin M expression decreased. Interestingly, marmoset B cell memory subset distribution rather mirrored the human situation than that of other NHP. CD21+ CD27 naïve B cell frequencies decreased while those of CD21 CD27 tissue memory B cells increased with age. Furthermore, frequencies and numbers of NK cells as part of the innate immune system declined with advancing age. Thus, the observed immunological changes in common marmosets over their life span revealed several similarities to age-related changes in humans and encourages further studies to strengthen the common marmoset as a potential aging model.  相似文献

We have been studying the effects of expression of plasmid-borne, Tn10-encoded, tetracycline resistance on the fitness of Escherichia coli K12. We previously demonstrated large reductions in fitness resulting from induced or constitutive expression of the resistance protein; however, any residual expression by the repressed operon was so slight that possession of an inducible resistance function imposed essentially no burden in the absence of antibiotic. Here, we demonstrate two distinct disadvantages for inducible genotypes relative to isogenic constitutive constructs. During the transition from antibiotic-free to antibiotic-containing media, the inducible genotype experiences a longer lag phase prior to growth. In the sustained presence of antibiotic, full induction of the resistance function in the inducible genotype is prevented by the continued action of its repressor. However, these disadvantages may be reduced by increasing the strength of the promoter for the resistance gene in the inducible genotype. Simultaneous consideration of the mode of gene regulation (i.e. constitutive or inducible) and the strength of the resistance-gene promoter (i.e. maximum level of expression) indicates an adaptive landscape with very strong epistasis and, perhaps, multiple fitness peaks.  相似文献

Abstract: We developed models for simultaneous inference on movement and harvest rates, and of factors influencing harvest rates, using band-recovery data and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) modeling. We modeled variation in harvest rates for American black ducks (Anas rubripes) during 1971–1994 using recoveries of ducks banded in 3 breeding regions and recovered in 6 harvest regions in Canada and the United States. Models based on season length or bag limit together with season length, and incorporating a random year- and area-specific effect, were superior to other models as gauged by information criteria, fit statistics, and cross-validation. We used these models to generate posterior predictive distributions for harvest rates as a function of harvest regulations, for application to adaptive harvest management.  相似文献

In most vertebrates, the regenerative capacity to restore lost/damage tissues to original structure and functionality decreases at some time during ontogenesis. To evaluate the role of the acquired immunity in the decline of regenerative potential, we examined the cellular responses elicited in the spleen during skin repair in Xenopus adults. Modifications in the architecture were found to be induced and were remarkable 14 days postinjury when the spleen increased significantly in size. In white pulp, the periarteriolar lymphoid sheaths were associated with follicles having central light zones, morphologically similar to germinal centers. With the progress of healing, pigment‐containing cells were seen to accumulate in both white and red pulp regions. Moreover, compared to controls, the cells immunoreactive to anti‐cytokines (TNF‐α, TGF‐β1) and ‐iNOS increased from the first days after wounding. The 14th day, the positive cells formed a dense network of reticular cells in central regions of lymphoid follicles and more frequent reactive leukocytes were detected within the red pulp. A higher number of lymphoid cells immunostained with anti‐CD3ε were also observed in the perifollicular zone. The results suggest that the spleen of adult frogs is involved in skin wound healing with the expansion of lymphoid compartments. J.
