In mimicry with human gastric epithelial cells, the lipopolysaccharide of Helicobacter pylori expresses Lewis blood group antigens. Recent data suggest that molecular mimicry does not promote immune evasion, nor does it lead to induction of autoantibodies, but that H. pylori Lewis X mediates adhesion to gastric epithelial cells and is essential for colonization.  相似文献

The plant Euphorbia cyparissias is commonly infected by rust fungi of the species complex Uromyces pisi. When infected, E. cyparissias is unable to flower, but instead is induced by the fungus to form pseudoflowers. Pseudoflowers are rosettes of yellow leaves upon which the fungus presents its gametes in a sweet-smelling fungal nectar. We hypothesized that the fungi, as they are heterothallic, are dependent on insect visitation to cross-fertilize their mating types. We confirmed that insects are required with an insect exclusion experiment. We further hypothesized that pseudoflowers of U. pisi interact with uninfected true host flowers through insects during their period of co-"flowering" in early spring. We conducted artificial array experiments in the field to test whether the two species share insects and whether they influenced each other's insect visitation. Insects moved between true flowers and pseudoflowers, but true flowers received more visits over all. Pseudoflowers and true flowers did not influence each other's visitation rates in mixtures. However, shorter visits were observed on pseudoflowers in mixtures than monocultures, suggesting that true flowers might be competitors for pseudoflowers. Further experiments are needed to determine whether the similarity of pseudoflowers to true flowers is adaptive.  相似文献

Plant defence signals and Batesian mimicry   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In a game theory context, we investigated conditions for an evolutionarily stable equilibrium of defended, signalling plants, and plants mimicking these signals – that is, conditions for a stable mimicry complex. We modelled this in three steps. First, we analysed conditions for selection for defended, signalling plants, in a population of undefended plants. Second, we analysed conditions for when mimicking plants can invade a population of defended, signalling plants, leading to a stable equilibrium between the two strategies. Third, we analysed how sampling of signalling plants by herbivores affects the equilibrium between the strategies. The predictions show that mimicry of plant defence signals may be common, and even imperfect mimics could invade a population of defended, signalling plants. Whether the latter prediction holds or not depends on how herbivores generalize over signals, and on the length of their avoidance sequence'. The length of the avoidance sequence is the number of signalling plants that a herbivore avoids to attack, after attacking a defended plant. If herbivores always sample signalling plants, then mimicry cannot evolve, whereas if herbivores have a long avoidance sequence, this may allow selection even for imperfect mimics.  相似文献

The aphantochilid spider Aphanlochilus rogersi accurately mimics black ants of tribe Cephalotini, and is commonly found in the neighbourhood of its models' nests. The mimic seems to be a specialized predator of this type of ant, rejecting any insect offered as prey other than cephalotines. In the field, A. rogersi was observed preying on the model species Zacryptocerus pusillus. In captivity, the spider preyed on the models Z. pusillus and Z. depressus, as well as on the yellow non-model Z. clypeatus. Recognition of correct prey by A. rogersi appears to be based primarily on visual and tactile stimuli. Capturing ant prey from behind was the most common attack tactic observed in A. rogersi, and is probably safer than frontal attacks, as in this case the spider can be bitten on the legs before the ant is immobilized. Aphanlochilus rogersi, when feeding on the hard-bodied ant models, uses the ant corpses as a ‘protective shield’ against patrolling ants of the victim's colony and resembles an ant carrying a dead companion. Certain types of mimetic traits in A. rogersi (close similarity to ant models in integument texture and pilosity of body and legs), together with ‘shielding behaviour’, are thought to function as ant-deceivers, facilitating the obligatory intimate contact the mimic must make with cephalotines in order to capture a prey among other ants. The close similarity in the arrangement of dorsal spines, body shape, integument brightness and locomotion, together with antennal illusion, is regarded as a strategy of A. rogersi for deceiving visually-hunting predators that avoid its sharp spined ant models. It is proposed that ant-mimicry in A. rogersi has both an aggressive and a Batesian adaptive component, and evolved as a result of combined selective pressures exerted both by Cephalotini ant models (through defensive behaviour towards the mimics which attack them) and predators that avoid cephalotines (through predatory behaviour toward imperfect mimics). This suggestion is schematized and discussed in terms of two tripartite mimicry systems.  相似文献

Although whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) have been documented to move thousands of kilometres, they are most frequently observed at a few predictable seasonal aggregation sites. The absence of sharks at the surface during visual surveys has led to the assumption that sharks disperse to places unknown during the long ‘off-seasons’ at most of these locations. Here we compare 2 years of R. typus visual sighting records from Mafia Island in Tanzania to concurrent acoustic telemetry of tagged individuals. Sightings revealed a clear seasonal pattern with a peak between October and February and no sharks observed at other times. By contrast, acoustic telemetry demonstrated year-round residency of R. typus. The sharks use a different habitat in the off-season, swimming deeper and further away from shore, presumably in response to prey distributions. This behavioural change reduces the sharks'' visibility, giving the false impression that they have left the area. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, year-round residency of unprovisioned, individual R. typus at an aggregation site, and highlight the importance of using multiple techniques to study the movement ecology of marine megafauna.  相似文献

Multilocus clines between Müllerian mimetic races of Heliconius butterflies provide a classic example of the maintenance of hybrid zones and their importance in speciation. Concordant hybrid zones in the mimics Heliconius erato and H. melpomene in northern Peru were carefully documented in the 1980s, and this prior work now permits a historical analysis of the movement or stasis of the zones. Previous work predicted that these zones might be moving toward the Andes due to selective asymmetry. Extensive deforestation and climate change might also be expected to affect the positions and widths of the hybrid zones. We show that the positions and shapes of these hybrid zones have instead remained remarkably stable between 1985 and 2012. The stability of this interaction strongly implicates continued selection, rather than neutral mixing following secondary contact. The stability of cline widths and strong linkage disequilibria (gametic correlation coefficients Rmax = 0.35–0.56 among unlinked loci) over 25 years suggest that mimetic selection pressures on each color pattern locus have remained approximately constant (s ≈ 0.13–0.40 per locus in both species). Exceptionally high levels of precipitation at the edge of the easternmost Andes may act as a population density trough for butterflies, trapping the hybrid zones at the foot of the mountains, and preventing movement. As such, our results falsify one prediction of the Pleistocene Refugium theory: That the ranges of divergent species or subspecies should be centered on regions characterized by maxima of rainfall, with hybrid zones falling in more arid regions between them.  相似文献

This study, designed to survey forest elephants ( Loxodonta africana cyclotis ) at Kakum Conservation Area, Ghana, is the first to apply acoustic methods to elephant abundance estimation and to compare results with independent survey estimates. Nine acoustic sensors gathered sound continuously for 38 days. Low-frequency calling rates have been established as useful elephant abundance indices at a Namibian watering hole and a central African forest clearing. In this study, we estimated elephant population size by applying an abundance index model and detection function developed in central Africa to data from simultaneous sampling periods on Kakum sensors. The sensor array recorded an average of 1.81 calls per 20-min sampling period from an effective detection area averaging 10.27 km2. The resulting estimate of 294 elephants (95% CI: 259–329) falls within confidence bounds of recent dung-based surveys. An extended acoustic model, estimating the frequency with which elephants are silent when present, yields an estimate of 350 elephants (95% CI: 315–384). Acoustic survey confidence intervals are at least half as wide as those from dung-based surveys. This study demonstrates that acoustic surveying is a valuable tool for estimating elephant abundance, as well as for detecting other vocal species and anthropogenic noises that may be associated with poaching.  相似文献

Male sexual displays often include components detected across long distances, and those perceived only at close range. Understanding what information females gain from each component of a complex display and how they use these signals to make decisions are questions of major interest in sexual selection research. We evaluated content‐based hypotheses (‘redundant signals’ and ‘multiple messages’) for the courtship displays of field crickets (Gryllus integer) by measuring female responses to males' long‐distance calling song (calls) and close‐range chemical cues. Females' responses to a male's calls and chemical cues were uncorrelated, supporting the ‘multiple messages’ hypothesis. We also tested the ‘inter‐signal interaction’ hypothesis by investigating how long‐distance calls influence evaluation of close‐range courtship. The relationship between long‐ and close‐range signals was complex and conditional: females accepted close‐range courtship more quickly after exposure to attractive calling song than they did after exposure to either unattractive calling song or silence, and unattractive calls were no more or less effective than silence. This inter‐signal interaction could affect our understanding of mate choice in species with multiple mating signals because it implies that females may save time and energy by not assessing the close‐range signals of attractive long‐distance signalers. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 856–865.  相似文献
