Between 2013 and 2019, 63 presumed Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha sampled primarily in the Strait of Georgia (0.63% of total sample) were identified as potential Chinook–Coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) hybrids by the presence of anomalous microsatellite genotypes. Their hybrid origin was confirmed by single nucleotide polymorphism amplification of two species‐specific amplicons. Mitochondrial DNA indicated that most of these fish resulted from the hybridization of Coho salmon females and Chinook salmon males. Although no diagnostic external features were identified, several individuals displayed an abnormal scale arrangement on the caudal peduncle. One hybrid juvenile examined for meristics exhibited a pyloric caeca count intermediate between published values for Chinook and Coho salmon. Most hybrids originated in the Cowichan River during the 2014 brood year. Their prevalence in the watershed is a naturally occurring event, likely exacerbated by prolonged low water levels which limit habitat and delay Chinook salmon spawning, in addition to the differential abundance of the parental species. This research is the first to document ongoing natural hybridization (Chinook–Coho salmon crosses) and link it to habitat and climatic changes, and includes the identification of eight F1 adults and two juvenile backcross or F2 hybrids. The potential negative impacts of hybridization, particularly in Coho salmon through potential introgression, warrant hybrid identification as an ecosystem monitoring tool within a survey program.  相似文献

Ultrasonographic examinations of one multiparous 33-year-old female southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) resulted in documentation of the animal's estrous cycle, elucidation of the timing of ovulation in relation to estrus, and ultrasonographic evidence of endometritis and associated early embryonic death. The preovulatory follicle was observed to change in shape from spherical to pear-shape (n = 3) and to reach a mean follicular diameter of ˜30 mm (n = 4) in the 48 hr preceding estrus. An ovulation site in the location of the preovulatory follicle was observed to occur within 24 hr postbreeding on one occasion. Both pregnancies monitored in this female in 1995 were lost by day 28 postovulation, with collapse of the embryonic vesicle documented via ultrasound. Ultrasonographic evidence of endometritis was observed in this female and was characterized by small quantities of anechoic intrauterine fluid collections (5–20 mm diameter) in late diestrus (n = 4, mean day observed was 20.5 days postovulation, with a range of 18–24 days). Fecal samples collected at the time of ultrasound were evaluated via radioimmunoassay for progesterone metabolites. A substantial rise in fecal progestins was not identified until 7–9 days postovulation. This study illustrates the value of combining the complementary techniques of ultrasonographic “mapping” of events with fecal hormone assay to enhance the accuracy of reproductive monitoring. The role of juvenile hormone (JH) in courtship, mating, maternal behavior, and the ovarian cycle was studied in the ring-legged earwig, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas). The single, median corpus allatum makes and secretes JH III. JH III production was low in newly eclosed adult females, increasing as oocytes developed, maximal at about the time of oviposition, and low again in brooding females. Application of 35 or 122 μg JH III to newly eclosed females hastened the onset of courtship behavior, but had no effect on the age at which females first mated nor on the duration of mating, though the trend is toward advanced onset. Hormone treatment advanced the age of first oviposition and reduced clutch size and the proportion of eggs hatching but did not affect the interval from oviposition of the first clutch to oviposition of the second clutch, nor the size and proportion hatching of the second clutch. Acetone treatment and treatment with 6 μg JH III did not affect these parameters. Application of 50 μg JH III to females on the day of oviposition shortened the duration of maternal care and advanced the onset of the second gonadotropic cycle, compared with that of acetone-treated and precocene II-treated females. The duration of maternal care was positively correlated with the proportion of eggs hatching. JH titer analysis confirmed JH III to be the predominant hormone in this species and clearly demonstrated the absence of other homologues. This work also confirmed our hypothesis that intermediate to high levels of JH are associated with oocyte growth, mating, and cessation of maternal care; low levels of JH are associated with the period of maternal behavior and slow ovarian development. Fluctuations in ecdysteroid production by explanted prothoracic glands (PG) during the penultimate and last larval instars parallel changes in ecdysteroid titer in the hemolymph. The in vitro output of ecdysteroids increases up to 30-fold when PG are co-cultured with the brain. Maximal amounts of ecdysteroids are produced when both PG and brain are taken from larvae at the time of the molt-inducing ecdysteroid peaks (days 2–3 in the penultimate and days 5–6 in the last instar), and also from day 3 last instar larvae that exhibit a small rise of hemolymph ecdysteroids. Detailed investigations on penultimate instar larvae revealed that their PG become sensitive to the stimulation on day 1 (about 24 h after ecdysis), but the stimulatory brain potential is restricted to days 2 and 3. Both the stimulatory capacity of the brain and the sensitivity of PG are lost on days 4 and 5, i.e., after the ecdysteroid surge on day 3. PG explanted from young adults do not secrete appreciable amounts of ecdysteroids but can be stimulated to ecdysteroid production with active larval brains. Arch. Insect Biochem. The links between psychosocial stress, social status, reproductive function, and urinary cortisol were assessed in social groups of black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli). Urinary cortisol excretion was monitored in cases of intrafamily conflict (“sibling fights”) and in daughters in four distinct social contexts: in the family group, while housed singly or in same-sex pairs, and while paired with a male pairmate. Cortisol excretion was elevated in participants in intra-family conflict on the day of and the day following the conflict, relative to concentrations a week prior to or following the conflict. Daughters in natal family groups had concentrations of cortisol that did not differ from reproductively active adult females. This finding held for daughters who were either anovulatory or undergoing ovulatory cycles while in the natal family group. Natal family members and male pairmates exerted buffering effects on levels of activity in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) in female C. kuhli. Placing females in solitary housing led to significantly increased cortisol excretion. In the 2 months subsequent to pairing with a male partner, excreted cortisol concentrations in females declined significantly. Daughters removed from their natal family group and housed with a sister did not exhibit increased cortisol levels. These data reveal that activity in the (HPA) axis in marmosets is sensitive to psychosocial stressors, and that urinary cortisol can provide a useful quantitative measure of HPA reactivity. As in other callitrichids, delayed breeding in daughters and reproductive anomalies in C. kuhli appear to be mediated by mechanisms other than elevated HPA activity. Am. J. In this paper I examine behavioral strategies used by male and female tamarins to increase individual reproductive opportunities while continuing to maintain a high level of group cohesion and social cooperation. Tamarins of the genus Saguinus are characterized by social groups generally composed of more than one adult of each sex, but a breeding system in which only a single female in each group gives birth. The breeding sovereignty of a single dominant female limits the reproductive opportunities of subordinate females as well as the reproductive opportunities of resident adult males.1-3 Despite extreme variability in year-to-year reproductive success among members of the same social group, field studies indicate that within-group intrasexual aggression and fighting are rare, and that both breeding and nonbreeding individuals expend time and energy cooperatively caring for young, defending productive feeding sites, and assisting in food harvesting activities.4-11 In fact, Caine12 has argued that “co-operation, tolerance, and flexibility” are the primary themes of tamarin social interactions (p. 218). A major question that remains unanswered, however, is how such high levels of cooperation could have evolved in a social system characterized by emigration of both adult males and females from the natal group, polyandrous mating, and intense reproductive competition.  相似文献

Fenoxycarb (FC) effects were studied on juvenile hormone (JH) titers and JH‐esterase activities in the silkworm, B. Mori. In the literature, FC was observed to induce high JH titers but also to act without corpora allata (CA). These contradictory results did not permit us to conclude whether FC was a potent JH mimic or it was acting through the enhancement of JH titers in the hemolymph. Analysis of hemolymph JH‐esterase activities during the last larval instar reveals that FC was not a JH‐esterase inhibitor. Considering JHs, only JH II was detected in the European hybrid 200×300. Furthermore, JH titer was exactly identical in control and FC‐treated larvae, i.e., it dropped during the first 2 days of the last larval instar and became undetectable after day 2. This result is important since it contradicts the generally admitted concept that FC was acting by increasing the titer of JH. On the contrary, it was found that, despite its non‐terpenoid chemical structure, FC might be a JH mimic. In addition, FC suspected contamination of mulberry leaves was analyzed from a physiological viewpoint. We observed that "contaminated" mulberry leaves‐fed larvae became permanent larvae through the inhibition of their prothoracic glands (PG) activity and without any modification of their JH titers, i.e., exactly as for FC‐treated larvae. This last point adds information concerning the suspected implication of FC in the induction of the non‐spinning syndrome. Arch. Insect Biochem. Groups of individually marked cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus), located in La Reserva Forestal Protectora Serranía de Coraza-Montes de María in Colosó Colombia, were studied over a period of 5 years. Data on group composition, stability, birthing seasons, and dispersal patterns are used to examine the reproductive strategies and tactics used by males and females. Both monogamous groups and groups containing two pregnant females have been observed. All groups contained at least one adult female and male, with several groups containing several adult males and females. Both males and females dispersed to neighboring groups, and there were no sex differences in rates of emigration. Males were more likely to immigrate into a new group following the death/emigration of a resident male. Females appeared to tolerate immigrating females but would actively defend their breeding position during fertile periods. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The metabolism and excretion of progesterone in different animal species results in several fecal 5-reduced progesterone metabolites (pregnanes), which in recent studies were quantified using progesterone antibodies. To increase the accuracy of fecal 20-oxo-pregnane evaluations in the black rhinoceros, enzyme immunoassays (EIA) using antibodies against 5α-pregnane-3β-ol-20-one 3HS:BSA (5α-20-one EIA) and 5β-pregnane-3α-ol-20-one 3HS:BSA (5β-20-one EIA) were developed. The assays showed high crossreactivities with pregnanes containing a 20-oxo group and are referred to as group-specific; results of these assays were compared with an EIA using an antibody against 6HS-progesterone (4-ene-20-one EIA). Fecal samples of both subspecies of the black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli, n = 5, and Diceros bicornis minor, n = 1) during pregnancy were collected 1–3 times/week. HPLC separation showed three major immunoreactive fecal 20-oxo-pregnane peaks; their elution profiles and different crossreactivities in the three EIAs provided strong evidence that these peaks are 5α-pregnane-3, 20-dione, 5α-pregnane-3α-ol-20-one, and 5α-pregnane-3β-ol-20-one. Pregnane values in the pregnant animals continuously increased between months 3–7 and were significantly (P < 0.01) elevated above the levels of nonpregnant animals (0.2 μg/g) by week 11. During months 6–13 concentrations in the 5α-20-one and in the 5β-20-one EIA (5–11 μg/g) were significantly (P < 0.01) higher than in the 4-ene-20-one EIA (1.5–3 μg/g). In conclusion, the immunoreactive fecal 20-oxo-pregnane metabolites in the black rhinoceros are determined more accurately with antibodies against pregnane-20-one-C3 conjugates, as compared with a progesterone antibody. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
