Using covariance analysis as an adjusted regression analysis it is possible, with the assumption of homogeneity and normality of variance, to test several regression functions for homogeneity, if the given groups of data material are independent. This well-known analysis is applied to a number of examination methods of ophthalmology. In the cases of ophthalmo-dynamography (ODG) and ophthalmo-dynamometry (ODM), the paper answers the question to what extent the result of ophthalmologic measurement is influenced by posture (sitting — lying — standing). Contrary to several authors' practice of combining the regression lines for the systolic and diastolic blood-pressure because of the improvement of the correlation coefficient to be achieved in this way, it was possible to show that generally such an approach is not recommendable. Patients suffering from a certain type of arteriosclerosis distinguish themselves by deviations of their ODG data from the normal blood-pressure relation of the arteria carotis interna and the arteria brachialis. These differences can be tested for statistical significance by means of covariance analysis.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Temperature strongly influenced morphogenesis of intracellular trypomastigotes in cell culture infected with 2 different strains of T. cruzi. With the Gilmar strain the amastigote-to-trypomastigote differentiation readily occurred at 33 and 37 C, whereas with the CL strain differentiation took place at 33 C but was inhibited at 37 C. The possibility of this selective thermosensitivity resulting from mutational adaptation of the parasite is discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Plumage bacteria may play an important role in shaping the life histories of birds. However, to design suitable experiments to examine causal relationships between plumage bacteria and the fitness of host birds, natural variation in plumage bacterial communities needs to be better understood. We examined within‐individual consistency of plumage bacterial contamination in Great Tits (Parus major), comparing different body regions (ventral vs. dorsal) and comparing contamination between years. Numbers of free‐living and attached bacteria and the species richness of feather‐degrading bacterial assemblages were studied using flow cytometry and ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA). Numbers of both types of bacteria were higher on dorsal than on ventral feathers. Numbers of free‐living, but not attached, bacteria on the two body regions were highly positively correlated. There was also a strong within‐individual correlation between numbers of attached bacteria during the same breeding stages in different years. These results suggest that, despite variation in absolute levels of feather bacterial loads between years and different body regions, sampling individual birds can provide reliable estimates of relative levels of bacterial contamination, as long as sampling time and body region are carefully standardized.  相似文献

Throughout its native North Pacific, the chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), exists as twolife-history types that aredistinguished by the age at which juvenile salmon migrate to sea as smolts. 'Stream-type' chinook migrate seaward after I or more years of feeding in fresh water, whereas 'ocean-type' fish migrate to sea as newly emerged fry or after 2–3 months in fresh water. Stream-type chinook predominate in populations distant from the sea south of 56° N, and in both inland and coastal populations north of this point. By contrast, ocean-type chinook predominate in coastal populations south of 56° N, but are rare in populations in more northerly latitudes. Stream-type populations are associated with areas of low 'growth opportunity' (as measured by temperature and photoperiod regimes) and/or areas distant from the sea compared to ocean-type. Geographic variability in juvenile life history is suggested to result, in part, from environmental modulation of smolting timing via differences in growth opportunity among geo-graphic areas. In addition, differences in migration distance and temperature regime may result in selection for different sizes at migration among populations which, through differences in growth opportunity, might promote geographic variability in age at seaward migration.  相似文献

Understanding how abiotic factors influence the spatial distribution of genetic variation provides insight into microevolutionary processes. The intertidal seascape is characterized by highly heterogeneous habitats which probably influence the partitioning of genetic variation at very small scales. The effects of tidal height on genetic variation in both the haploid (gametophytes) and diploid (tetrasporophytes) stages of the red alga Chondrus crispus were studied. Fronds were sampled every 25 cm within a 5 m × 5 m grid and along a 90-m transect at two shore heights (high and low) in one intertidal site in France. The multilocus genotype of 799 fronds was determined (Nhaploid = 586; Ndiploid = 213) using eight microsatellite loci to test the following hypotheses: (i) high and low shore fronds belong to genetically differentiated populations, (ii) gene flow is restricted within the high shore habitat due to tidal-influenced isolation and (iii) significant FIS values are driven by life history characteristics. Pairwise FST estimates between high and low shore levels supported the hypothesis that high and low shore fronds were genetically differentiated. The high shore was characterized by the occurrence of within-shore genetic differentiation, reduced genetic diversity and increased levels of intergametophytic selfing, suggesting it is a marginal environment. These results suggest at fine scales within the intertidal seascape the same mechanisms as those over the species’ distributional range are at work with core and marginal population dynamics.  相似文献

When oxygen binds to one of the subunits of hemoglobin, the oxygen affinity of the other subunits is enhanced. This cooperative interaction of the subunits is initiated by the movement of the heme plane toward the proximal side when oxygen binds to the heme. This motion is transmitted to the surface of the globin through a “reaction channel” consisting of a group of atoms whose motion is well correlated. Considering the detailed geometry and X-ray diffraction data of the mean square displacement of the atoms surrounding the heme, a simple model for the heme plane oscillations is developed. Using this model, the natural frequency of oscillations is shown to be ≈5 × 1011 Hz. This result, along with the recent experimental data on the kinetics of the conformational changes of the heme, points to the possibility of radiation influencing the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin. If such an effect exists, it is likely that the oxygen affinity will be enhanced by the radiation.  相似文献

Dr. Nabel is President of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her lecture to Yale medical students portrayed her own personal and professional journey through medicine as a series of opportunities. European eels, Anguilla anguilla, L., are captured in coghill nets at three commercial weirs on the Irish River Shannon during their autumn/winter seaward migration. The variations in daily silver eel catches were analysed in relation to environmental conditions, especially hydrometric and meteorological factors. Three multivariate environmental axes were distinguished with which daily eel catches could be correlated. The relative importance of various hydrometric, meteorological and temporal (seasonality, lunar phase) factors was identified, showing how hydrological and meteorological factors generally obscure the underlying lunar periodicity of the silver eel migrations at Killaloe.  相似文献
