In order to evaluate the usefulness of a biomonitoring system using seaweeds for assessing the geographic distribution of metal ions in coastal seawaters, the metal concentrations in the sporophytes of an annual kelp, Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, were collected at 15 localities in Osaka Bay, Japan and compared. About 160 cm2 of the blade was cut out from the central part of clean sporophytes, rinsed in filtered seawater using an ultrasonic cleaning bath, and freeze‐dried. After digestion with 12% HNO3 in a microwave apparatus, metal concentrations in the samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The concentrations (dry weight basis) of most examined elements were in the parts per million range; Cr, 0.48–3.18; Ni, 0.77–5.94; Cu, 3.20–43.8; Zn, 11.3–86.8; Pb, 0.14–3.53. Comparisons of metal compositions of the U. pinnatifida samples from the northeastern area of the bay, which has a large urban population and highly developed industries inland, showed high concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cu compared with the samples from the southwestern area of the bay where the population and industries are much smaller. This suggests that U. pinnatifida metal loads can be used as a marker to track the geographic distributions of the metal concentrations in coastal seawaters, reflecting inland human activities such as shipbuilding and repairing in port areas, and can be used as a useful biomonitoring system of coastal environments for long‐term trend.  相似文献

The Pawcatuck river watershed (797 km2) is located in southern Rhode Island and northeastern Connecticut. The predominant lithology of the area is granite, and over 60% of the watershed remains forested with mixed hardwoods (primarily oak) and eastern white pine. As part of a larger study of nutrient and sediment exports from the watershed to Little Narragansett Bay, we measured dissolved silica (SiO2) (DSi) concentrations at the river mouth over 70 times between January 14, 2002 and November 29, 2002. Annual export of DSi during our study was 40 × 106 mol or 50 kmol km−2. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) obtained DSi concentrations at this site, at varying frequencies, from 1978 to the present, which allowed for a historical comparison of this study with previous years. River DSi concentrations exhibited a strong seasonal signal that did not vary in a regular way with water discharge or water temperature. DSi and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were significantly related over the annual cycle (p<0.0001) and both decreased substantially during the spring. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) did not covary at any time with silica or nitrogen, suggesting that in-stream biological uptake was not responsible for the seasonal decline in silica. The spring decline in river silica concentrations may be due to silica uptake by terrestrial vegetation. We estimate a net forest silica accretion rate of 41 kmol km−2 y−1, a value that is stoichiometrically consistent with other measurements of net carbon accretion in nearby forests.  相似文献

Several investigations exist which use planktonic communities as indicators of water quality in Jamaican and Caribbean Bays, however, few are conducted before there are obvious effects of eutrophication. Therefore, most of our ‘baseline’ data are for bays already severely affected by pollution. This study was conducted to assess water quality in Discovery Bay, Jamaica, before there were severe signs of eutrophication. The bay was monitored over a 12-month period (October 1995–September 1996) using 10 stations. Physicochemical data indicated a well mixed upper 5 m of water column, below which discontinuities in temperature/salinity profiles indicated the influence of colder, more saline waters associated with deep offshore currents. Physicochemical variables were within the range for oligotrophic systems with a tendency towards mesotrophic in localized areas close to the shoreline. Signs of anthropogenic stress were associated with the eastern, southwestern and western sections of the bay. Of the over 120 species of phytoplankton found in the waters of Discovery Bay, most were neritic/oceanic and diatoms dominated while 11 were found to be potentially harmful species. While these harmful species occurred at all stations they occurred most frequently at stations on the eastern side of the bay. About 107 zooplankton species were identified, 52 of which were copepods. The species also represented a mix of neritic and oceanic taxa and mean abundances for the area ranged from 1077 m−3 at the mouth of the bay to 3794 m−3 close to the south shore (station 6). Generally stations closest to shore had greater zooplankton abundances than centrally located bay stations and stations close to oceanic influence. Acartia tonsa and Lucifer faxoni showed greatest densities at shoreline areas of the bay while Oithona plumifera, Undinula vulgaris and Temora stylifera were important at stations closest to oceanic influences. These species were thus considered as indicators of these different areas within the bay. From physicochemical data and the planktonic assemblage, Discovery Bay cannot be considered polluted, it is still more accurately classified as generally pristine with mesotrophic zones in the eastern and southeastern sections of the bay. These data therefore provide a real baseline of conditions for similar tropical coastal embayments.  相似文献

First discovered in San Francisco Bay in 1992, the Chinese mitten crab,Eriocheir sinensis, has become established over hundreds of km2 of the San Francisco Estuary. Ecological and economic impacts of this invasive species motivated our search for a greater understanding of the crabs life history as an important step in better management and control. Data for this life history model comes from the authors research and scientific literature. Juvenile crabs migrate from the Estuary into fresh water where they develop into adults. Environmental signals may stimulate gonad development that is followed by a downstream migration beginning at the end of summer. Mating occurs after the crabs reach saline water. Embryos are carried until hatching, and the larvae undergo five zoeal stages before settlement. Our model projects rates of development at various temperatures and growth increments, supports a minimum of 2 years in low salinity or freshwater habitat, and predicts that most California mitten crabs are at least 3 years old before becoming sexually mature. Environmental factors strongly influence the timing and duration of the crabs life stages, and are discussed in the context of a gradient of development times for worldwide populations of this important invasive species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the expression, distribution in the column, and overall frequency of sagittal clefting of the vertebral body in the skeletons of two Canadian Inuit groups. One group, referred to as Thule-Historic, lived along the coast northwest of Hudson Bay, while the other, known as the Sadlermiut, were limited to Southampton Island and Coats Island north of Hudson Bay. The Thule-Historic people are thought to be the ancestors of the present-day Inuit of this region, whereas the much smaller, relatively isolated Sadlermiut became extinct during the winter of 1902-1903. The sagittal clefting results were also compared with those obtained for two other vertebral developmental problems, segmentation error and spina bifida. Sagittal clefting was found to occur with high frequency in the two Inuit series, especially in the region T6-T10. Segmentation errors were found to occur in approximately the same region of the column, while spina bifida produced a completely different pattern, occurring primarily at T11 and S1. The T11 involvement is limited to females, while S1 involvement occurs primarily in males. Sagittal clefting and spina bifida occur in the same individual more frequently than sagittal clefting and segmentation error. Possibly reflecting the smaller population size and isolated location of the Sadlermiut, sagittal clefting was found with greater frequency and intensity in the skeletons of this group than in those of the Thule-Historic Inuit. 文章综合利用了Landsat系列卫星不同传感器(MSS、TM、ETM )的遥感资料对1979至2004年20多年间的大亚湾周边的植被陆地、非植被陆地以及水域等土地利用类型的相关变化进行了定量监测与评估。遥感监测结果表明,在过去的二十多年间,大亚湾周边植被覆盖总体保持相对稳定,但非植被陆地由1991年的5.1%左右上升到2004年的10.5%左右,水体面积也相应降低了5%左右,表现出“人进水退”的总体变化格局,该变化特征与该区域过去的环境政策、经济活动发展历程有关。通过将人类对区域环境影响的方式、力度和土地利用类型的变化建立一种对应关系,可以预测以后的开发建设活动对土地利用类型的影响,并应用到区域环境影响评价中去。  相似文献

After converting cropland to forest, carbon Is sequestered in the aggradlng blomass of the new forests, but the question remains, to what extent will the former arable soil contribute as a sink for CO2? Quantifying changes In soil carbon Is an Important consideration In the large-scale conversion of cropland to forest. Extensive field studies were undertaken to Identify a number of suitable sites for comparison of soil properties under pasture and forest. The present paper describes results from a study of the effects of first rotation larch on soil carbon In seven stands In an afforestation chronosequence compared with adjacent Korean pine, pasture, and cropland. An adjacent 250-year-old natural forest was Included to give Information on the possible long-term changes In soil carbon In northeast China In 2004. Soil carbon Initially decreased during the first 12 yr before a gradual recovery and accumulation of soil carbon occurred. The Initial (0-12 yr) decrease In soil carbon was an average 1.2% per year among case studies, whereas the Increase In soil carbon (12-33 yr) was 1.90% per year. Together with the carbon sequestration of forest floors, this led to total soil carbon stores of approximately 101.83 Mg/hm^2 over the 33-year chronosequence. Within the relatively short time span, carbon sequestration occurred mainly In tree blomees, whereas soil carbon stores were clearly higher In the 250-year-old plantation (184 Mg/hm^2). The ongoing redistribution of mineral soil carbon In the young stands and the higher soil carbon contents In the 250-year-old afforested stand suggest that nutrient-rich afforestation soils may become greater sinks for carbon (C) In the long term.  相似文献

In the frame of the largest French project of artificial production reefs, initiated by the city of Marseilles in 2001, the present study aimed at describing the hydrodynamic pattern of the coastal area considered, by the use of a 3D numerical modelling. Results were local wind statistics, bottom current fields and drifting particle maps. The knowledge of the hydrodynamic connexions between particle (such as larvae) sources or targeted areas linked to the reefs, allows us to explain the success or failure of the reefs' colonizing. Moreover, the study confirms the wind spatial variability and demonstrates the error resulting from the use of an average but locally absent wind direction.  相似文献

对渤海莱州湾海域240个站位表层沉积物中底栖有孔虫群落进行了分析,共鉴定常见的底栖有孔虫42种。结果表明,莱州湾表层沉积物中底栖有孔虫主要以玻璃质壳为主(平均丰度达70.9%),瓷质壳含量次之,胶结壳含量最低;玻璃质壳占有孔虫全群的百分含量,随水深的增加而增加;从黄河口向外海方向,有孔虫分异度和丰度都逐渐增大。该海域底栖有孔虫平面分布的主要控制因素为盐度和底质沉积物类型,大体可分为两个组合分区,I区为Ammonia beccarii-Quinqueloculina spp.组合,代表盐度较低的近岸海陆过渡浅水环境;II区为Cribrononionsub-incertum-Protelphidium tuberculatum组合,代表盐度较高的远岸内陆架环境。  相似文献
