Intra- and inter-tree variations in 13C/12C ratios were studied within a single clone plantation of 20-year-old Sitka spruce, some of which were treated with mist simulating acidic cloud water. For groups of trees of similar height and the same treatment, sampled at the same whorl height, 13C values for current year needles showed variations (1 SD) of between 0.2 and 0.7. The variations reflect the seasonally averaged influences, on intercellular CO2 concentrations, of slight variations in the microhabitat within a group. For a typical intra-group variation of 0.4 one may be able to distinguish between groups whose mean intercellular CO2 concentrations differ by only 8 ppm. Acid misting resulted in a lowering of 13C values by c. 0.7 (significant at the P0.05 level). This reflects higher intercellular CO2 concentrations for acid misted trees, which can be interpreted in terms of their having assimilation rates c. 10% lower than those of control trees, and might explain the observed reduction in stem growth for acid-misted trees. Without careful attention to sampling strategy, however, these small inter-tree 13C variations can be easily masked by the much larger intra-tree variations with height. Large gradients of increasing needle 13C with height, of c. 0.5 m-1, were observed in two untreated trees of different total height. The gradient was similar for both trees so, though 13C values of both trees were identical close to their leaders (–27), the taller tree displayed much lower values close to the ground (–31). The gradients are believed to reflect lower light levels close to the ground, rather than the accumulation of respired CO2 in the atmosphere. The different height response of stems versus needles, reflected by an increase in 13Cstems13Cneedles with height (for cellulose), is discussed in terms of stem photosynthetic recapture of internally respired CO2.  相似文献

Abstract. Seed demography of three co-occurring Acer species in an old-growth mixed deciduous forest in Japan was studied. Almost all of the seeds of A. mono germinated in the first spring, while those of A. palmatum var. amoenum showed a delay in germination of almost one year. A. rufinerve showed a rather opportunistic germination habit. Both A. palmatum var. amoenum and A. rufinerve form short-term persistent seed banks, but without input of newly dispersed seeds they may become extinct in about one year. The seed bank for these two species is not as significant as for a typical pioneer species, and the seedling bank is important for all three species. Only a small proportion of the dispersed propagules contained viable embryos, mainly due to pollination failure or abortion (A. mono and A. palmatum var. amoenum), and invertebrate predation (A. rufinerve). For all three species, larger seed crops had a higher percentage of viable seeds. Even for these relatively small, wind-dispersed seeds, the predation pressure was very high. A large part of the dispersed seeds was eaten by wood mice during the first winter (30–80 %). Estimation from the 5-yr average of seed dispersal and seedling emergence showed that only 7–16 % of the dispersed viable seeds succeeded in germinating.  相似文献

This case study describes the behavior ofBahati (BA), a captive, wild-born, 4 – 6 yr old, female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), before and after her temporary release into Kibale National Park, Uganda. Post-release interactions with habituated, wild chimpanzees were recorded.BA was not attacked by the wild chimpanzees at the time of introduction and observations during her period of travel with conspecifics indicate that she received significantly more affiliative contact than aggressive.BA foraged further from humans, glanced less at observers and climbed ever higher in the canopy as the project proceeded.BA associated closely with two wild chimpanzees: a fully adult male and a young juvenile female. In the latter stages of the project, she spent progressively less time in proximity to conspecifics. After six weeks,BA no longer followed wild chimpanzees and repeatedly returned to human settlements. The attempt was terminated after two months andBA returned to captivity. On the basis of this case study, we suggest possible adjustments to re-introduction criteria, and discuss the outcomes of pre-release training, public involvement, and health screening under field conditions.  相似文献

With respect to prey selectivity and predation frequency, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) show local differences as well as diachronic variability within the same population. When data on predation from three long-term studies at Mahale, Gombe, and Tai are compared, some differences and similarities emerge; Mahale is more like Gombe than Tai in regard of prey selection but features of hunting at Tai with respect to predation frequency are not conspicuous. The most responsible factor for diversity in prey selectivity is a distinct “prey image” maintained by chimpanzees of different populations, although it is necessary to clarify in future studies why and how such tradition develops. Relative body size of chimpanzees to prey species and/or the degree of cooperation among members of a hunting party may explain the variability in prey size selected at each site, the latter influencing the frequency of successful hunts at the same time. Although various degrees of habituation and different sampling methods including artificial feeding might have obscured the real differences, recent data from the three populations do not seem to be biased greatly by such factors. Nevertheless, it is still difficult to make strict comparisons due to the lack of sufficient standardized data across the three populations on the frequency of hunting and predation. It is suggested that the size or demographic trend of a chimpanzee unit-group, especially the number of adult males included, necessarily influences its hunting frequency as well as its prey profile. It is also suggested that factors which bring these males together into a party (e.g. fruit abundance, swollen females, conflict between unit-groups etc.) strongly affect theactual hunting and kill rates. Other possible factors responsible for the local differences are forest structure (e.g. tree height), skilful “hero” chimpanzees, and competition with sympatric carnivorous animals. A total of at least 32 species have been recorded as prey mammals of chimpanzees from 12 study sites and the most common prey mammals are primates (18 species), of which 13 species are forest monkeys. Forest monkeys, colobine species in particular, are often the most common victims of the predation by chimpanzees at each site. We may point out a tendency toward selective hunting for the forest monkeys in terms of the selectivity of prey fauna among all three subspecies of chimpanzees, including populations living in drier environment. The mode of chimpanzee hunting seems to correspond to the highest available biomass of gregarious, arboreal monkeys in the forest, colobine species in particular. In contrast, bonobos (P. paniscus) are less carnivorous than chimpanzees, only rarely preying on a few species of small mammals. The sharp contrast of the two allied species in their predatory tendencies appears to have something to do with the differences in the structure of primary production between their habitats.  相似文献

Ancistrocladus korupensis D. W. Thomas & Gereau (Ancistrocladaceae) is a recently described liana from Cameroon. Its leaves yield the alkaloid michellamine B, which shows in vitro activity against HIV. The only known population is limited to ~15,000 ha within Korup National Park and its immediate surroundings. This study: (1) describes ecological patterns (geographic range, population density, stage and size class distributions, host tree characteristics, and seed dispersal patterns) of A. korupensis ; (2) quantifies patterns of genetic variation on species and subpopulation levels and fine-scale genetic structure; (3) describes variation in michellamine B content; and (4) makes conservation recommendations based on ecological and genetic data. Ecological data from 457 individuals from seven sites indicate that the A. korupensis population is dominated by canopy-climbing individuals. Population densities are low with values ranging from 2.5 to 12.9 individuals/ha. Reproduction data suggest limited seed dispersal, episodic fruiting, and no vegetative reproduction. Allozyme data indicate low genetic diversity with only 7.1% of the 14 loci polymorphic. Values for Hobs and He were 0.022 (_ 0.000 SE) and 0.041 (_ 0.000 SE), respectively. Wright's F statistics analysis suggests that A. korupensis is highly inbred (FIS = 0.455) with moderate levels of subpopulation differentiation (FST = 0.1153). Michellamine B content was best predicted by leaf type but also showed a significant relationship for stage class. The occurrence of rare, private alleles in most of the sites, low overall population size and density, and low availability of individuals for recruitment into the adult stage class are important considerations for the rational management of A. korupensis.  相似文献

Abstract. Seasonal variation in nutrient concentration in leaves and branches of Quercus pyrenaica was studied in natural Q. pyrenaica forest in the Sierra de Gata (Salamanca Province, Spain). Two permanent plots were established at the two extremes of a rainfall gradient in this area: annual mean precipitation from 720 mm at Fuenteguinaldo (granite bedrock) to 1580 mm at Navasfrias (schists and graywackes). Leaf and branch samples were collected every three weeks during the growing season from May to October, at three height levels of the tree canopy. Seasonal changes and internal nutrient dynamics were investigated for N, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mn, Fe and P during a two-year period. The concentrations of all nutrients varied among the seasons; these variations were related to nutrient mobility and the annual physiological cycle. Nutrient concentrations decrease in the case of K and P, while the sparse mobile nutrients Ca, Mg, Mn and Fe gradually accumulated during each growing season. In Navasfrias a considerable resorption of P from senescing leaves was detected. Different patterns were found for the other nutrients studied (Na and N).  相似文献

Abstract. Patterns of species richness in a managed forest were related to ecological factors at two spatial scales. Local variables within a plot (5 m × 5 m) included 13 soil classes and nine stand classes. Neighbourhood variables were defined within a 25 m radius from the focal plot and were measured using a Neighbourhood Diversity Index (NDI - total diversity of different stand classes) and nine Neighbourhood Scores (NS - relative dominance of a given stand class). 224 species were registered in the survey of which 138 were true forest species. Local parameters (stand and soil class) were weak predictors of total and forest species richness. High total and forest species richness were significantly related to high values of NDI (i.e. heterogeneous neighbourhoods). Regression trees showed that total species richness was best predicted by the amount of roadside habitat in the neighbourhood and NDI. Forest species richness was positively related to NDI and negatively related to the amount of coniferous stands in the neighbourhood.  相似文献

Abstract. Distribution of tree seedlings, forest architecture, light conditions, ground vegetation and humus conditions were studied in a 45 m × 100 m area including multiple gaps in an old-growth beech forest. Gaps were created after some beech trees had been felled in severe storms in February 1990. A group of adult ash trees is found near the study site. The data were analyzed by Correspondence Analysis. Young seedlings (< 4 yr), of both Fraxinus (a sun species) and Fagus (a shade species), were most abundant under the crown of beech trees in semi-shade conditions, and where beech litter did not accumulate. Differences in the dissemination of Fraxinus and Fagus explained differences in the establishment of the two species. In contrast, older seedlings of beech established before the storms were more numerous in the gaps, suggesting a change in the ecological requirements of beech seedlings in the course of time.  相似文献

Abstract. Spatial patterns of tree species were studied in a 50-ha tropical rain forest plot in the Pasoh forest, Malaysia. This forest is characterized by a high diversity and very high number of rare species. Out of the 745 species occurring with > five individuals, 80.4 % had an aggregated distribution, 19.5% were randomly distributed and one species had a regular distribution. The spatial patterns of rare vs. common species, juvenile vs. adult trees, and coarse vs. fine scales were compared. Rare species are generally less aggregated than common ones and most of the randomly distributed species are rare. Spatial patterns shift from high clumping to looser intensity or random distribution when moving from juveniles to adults for the same species. No adult tree species display a regular pattern, however. Regular distributions were rarely found; this is probably due to intraspecific competition at a local scale. There is a negative correlation between per capita death rate and population density. This study suggests that the Pasoh forest and its high diversity are subjected to multiple controlling factors, e.g., topography, spacing effect, density-dependent processes and species rarity. The importance of any factor changes across spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

1981-1996年经野外采集与鉴定,确定佛坪自然保护区已知鸟类211种,隶属于15目40科。其中东洋界种77种,古北界种96种,广布种38种,分别占鸟类总数的37%,45%和18%,呈古北界种稍多于东洋界种的区系特征;在鸟种组成上留鸟114种,夏侯鸟59种,冬候鸟5种,旅鸟33种,分别占鸟类总数的54%,28%,2%和16%,因而鸟类主要由留鸟和夏候鸟组成;与生态适应变幅相关,随季节的变化鸟类分布与迁移变化较大;对26种国家重点保护鸟类分布与数量统计显示,保护区是国家重点保护鸟类的资源宝库,尤其是雉科为鸟类中的优势种资源。  相似文献
