In order to explain and predict yield losses caused by European corn borer larvae, Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a mechanistic model was proposed to describe cavity appearance, their lengthwise extension, and their within-plant distribution. It integrates main dynamical processes of larvae: mortality, development and within-plant distribution. After its estimation and test under field conditions in 1988 and 1989, its validation, based upon X-ray photographs, is presented. This method allows cavity appearance and lengthwise extension to be followed without damaging the plants. This study confirms the relevance of the damage model and the rate of cavity lengthwise extension estimated with it. 相似文献

Abstract 1 Willows are frequently attacked and defoliated by adult leaf beetles (Phratora vulgatissima L.) early in the season and the plants are then attacked again when new larvae emerge. The native willow Salix cinerea has previously been shown to respond to adult grazing by producing new leaves with an increased trichome density. Subsequent larval feeding was reduced on new leaves. This type of induced plant response may reduce insect damage and could potentially be utilized for plant protection in agricultural systems. 2 Here, we investigated if the willow species most commonly used for biomass production in short rotation coppice, Salix viminalis, also responds to adult beetle grazing by increasing trichome density. Larval performance and feeding behaviour on plants previously exposed to adult beetles was compared with that on undefoliated control plants in a greenhouse. 3 We found an overall decrease in trichome density within all the plants (i.e. trichome density was lower on new leaves compared to that for older basal leaves on S. viminalis). However, leaves of beetle defoliated plants had a higher trichome density compared to control plants. Larval growth and feeding was not affected by this difference between treatments. Larvae appeared to remove trichomes when feeding on S. viminalis, a behaviour that might explain the lack of difference between treatments. 相似文献

T lymphocytes can undergo an activation/proliferation response or an apoptotic response following T cell receptor engagement. The choice between these outcomes is dictated by the activation state of the T lymphocyte, the presence of interleukin-2 and the strength of the T cell receptor stimulus. Specifically, when quiescent cells encounter effectively presented antigen they are activated and begin to proliferate. In contrast, activated cells, moving through the cell cycle under the influence of IL-2, undergo apoptosis upon reencountering antigen. Both the tumour necrosis factor receptor and CD95 (FAS) are known to participate in mediating this cell death. Genetic defects in the molecules of the lymphocyte death pathway (CD95, FAS ligand, IL-2 receptor) lead to syndromes of autoimmunity and dysregulated lymphocyte homeostasis. An understanding of the principles of the autocrine feedback death model can provide the rationale basis for effective antigen specific modulation of T cell mediated disease processes. 相似文献

Ectopic ion channels developed locally at the injury site after nerve damage by light ligation around common sciatic nerve of the rats. Different channel types have different processes of formation, accumulation and degeneration. During the first three days after injury, mechanically activated channels that are modulated by Ca++ channel activities first appeared. As the nerve fibers begin to be excited by TEA, a blocker of K+ channels, suggesting that the accumulation of K+ channels, the responsibility of mechanically activated channels was declining. Onset of K+ channels was from the 3rd postoperative day and lasted up to the fiftieth day. This time course of K+ channel development was closely related to allodynia and hyperalgesia of neuropathic animal behaviour. The results suggest that chronic contraction injury induces a dynamic change in the ectopic mechanically activated channels and K+ channels at the injury site of nerve and there is an interchange in the development time courses of the mechanic 相似文献

In the quest for complexes modelling functional characteristics of metal sulfur oxidoreductases, a series of molybdenum nitrosyl complexes with sulfur-dominated coordination sphere was synthesized. Treatment of the 16, 17 and 18 valence electron (VE) complexes [Mo(L)(NO)('S4')] (1–3) [L?=?SPh (1), PMe3 (2), NO (3), 'S4'2–?=?1,2-bis-(2-mercaptophenylthio) ethane(2-)] with the Brönsted acid HBF4 resulted in formation of different types of products. 1 and 3 were reversibly protonated at one thiolate atom of the 'S4'2– ligand;2, however, yielded the phosphonium salt [HPMe3]BF4 and the dinuclear [Mo(NO)('S4')]2. Alkylation of 1, 2 and 3 by Me3OBF4 or Et3OBF4 uniformly resulted in high yields of [Mo(L)(NO)(R-'S4')]BF4 complexes [L?=?SPh: R?=?Me (5), Et (6); L?=?PMe3: R?=?Me (7); L?=?NO: R?=?Me (8), Et (9)] in which one thiolate atom of the 'S4'2– ligand had become alkylated; the NMR spectra of 5, 6, 8 and 9 indicated that only one out of four theoretically possible diastereoisomers had formed. 5 and 6 were characterized also by single-crystal X-ray structure analyses. A comparison of ν(NO) bands and redox potentials (cyclic voltammetry) of parent complexes and alkylated derivatives showed that alkylation leads to a decrease in electron density at the molybdenum center and to a positive shift in redox potentials. The 16 VE complex 1 could be reduced, also chemically, to give the corresponding 17 VE anion [1]–, and inserted elemental sulfur into the Mo-SPh bond, forming the 18 VE phenylperthio complex [Mo(η2–SSPh)(NO)('S4')] (11) which, upon reaction with PPh3, gave SPPh3 and regenerated the parent complex 1. A complete series of terminally blocked, monodispersed homo-oligopeptides (to the pentamer level) from the sterically demanding, medium-ring alicyclic Cα,α-disubstituted glycine 1-aminocyclooctane-1-carb oxylic acid (Ac8c), and two Ala/Ac8c tripeptides, were synthesized by solution methods and fully characterized. The preferred conformation of all the oligopeptides was determined in deuterochloroform solution by IR absorption and 1H-NMR. The molecular structures of the amino acid derivative Z-Ac8c-OH, the dipeptide pBrBz- (Ac8c)2-OH and the tripeptide pBrBz-(Ac8c)3-OtBu were assessed in the crystal state by X-ray diffraction. Conformational energy computations were performed on the monopeptide Ac-Ac8c-NHMe. Taken together, the results obtained strongly support the view that the Ac8c residue is an effective β-turn and helix former. A comparison is also made with the conformational preferences of α-aminoisobutyric acid, the prototype of Cα, α-disubstituted glycines, and of the other members of the family of 1-aminocycloalkane-1-carboxylic acids (Acnc, with n=3, 5–7) investigated so far. To obtain general rules of peptide design using α,β-dehydro-residues, a sequence with two consecutive ΔPhe-residues, Boc-L -Val-ΔPhe–ΔPhe- L -Ala-OCH3, was synthesized by azlactone method in solution phase. The peptide was crystallized from its solution in an acetone/water mixture (70:30) in space group P61 with a=b=14.912(3) Å, c= 25.548(5) Å, V=4912.0(6) Å3. The structure was determined by direct methods and refined by a full matrix least-squares procedure to an R value of 0.079 for 2891 observed [I?3σ(I)] reflections. The backbone torsion angles ?1=?54(1)°, ψ1= 129(1)°, ω1=?177(1)°, ?2 =57(1)°, ψ2=15(1)°, ω2 =?170(1)°, ?3=80(1)°, ψ3 =7(2)°, ω3=?177(1)°, ?4 =?108(1)° and ψT4=?34 (1)° suggest that the peptide adopts a folded conformation with two overlapping β-turns of types II and III′. These turns are stabilized by two intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the CO of the Boc group and the NH of ΔPhe3 and the CO of Val1 and the NH of Ala4. The torsion angles of ΔPhe2 and ΔPhe3 side chains are similar and indicate that the two ΔPhe residues are essentially planar. The folded molecules form head-to- tail intermolecular hydrogen bonds giving rise to continuous helical columns which run parallel to the c-axis. This structure established the formation of two β-turns of types II and III′ respectively for sequences containing two consecutive ΔPhe residues at (i+2) and (i+3) positions with a branched β-carbon residue at one end of the tetrapeptide. 相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies) was exposed to nutrient solutions containing a range of aluminium (Al) concentrations at several pH levels (3.2, 4 and 5). Root growth was reduced by 100 µM and 400 µM Al at pH 4 and 5, but at pH 3.2 only by 400 µM Al. The Al content of the roots increased with increasing pH. The Al content of the roots was higher at the root tips than at the older root parts at all pH values. Using X-ray microanalysis it could be shown that higher levels of Al at increased pH were mainly due to increased Al contents in root cortex cell walls. In seedlings, mycorrhizal with Pisolithus tinctorius or Lactarius rufus, the Al concentration of cortex cell walls was higher when nitrate (NO3) rather than ammonium (NH4) was the nitrogen (N) source. 相似文献
