Concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate, and soluble reactive silicon (SRSi) were monitored in 12 streams draining small catchments (<10 km2) in the English Lake District. The catchments varied with respect to underlying geology, soil type and land cover. Average concentrations of SRP were in the range 0.5–11.2 μg P l-1, and estimated loads ranged from 0.01 to 0.14 kg P ha-1 a-1. The higher concentrations and loads were associated with catchments containing improved pasture. Mean streamwater concentrations of nitrate varied from 55 to 660 μg N l-1, while loads were in the range 0.8–9.6 kg N ha-1 a-1; no general dependence on catchment properties was discerned. Concentrations of SRSi were similar in all the streams (0.8–2 mg Si l-1), and annual loads were in the range 10–26 kg Si ha-1 a-1. Loads of all three nutrients were greatest during the winter, because of higher discharges, but in some catchments containing improved pasture, considerable transport of P also took place during the summer. Concentrations of nitrate in streams draining unimproved moorland catchments are approximately twice those reported for samples taken from similar streams in 1973 and 1974, possibly because of increased atmospheric deposition of inorganic nitrogen (ammonium and nitrate). Concentrations of SRP in such streams were similar to those reported for the earlier samples. Comparisons of stream loads of SRP and nitrate with estimated inputs suggest that catchment soils retain substantial amounts of these nutrients. The traditional view of predaceous zooplankton is that they prefer small-bodied prey, are hindered by morphological anti-predator defenses, and have a minor influence on zooplankton communities when fish are present. We performed a series of experiments with the large-bodied onychopod (cladoceran) Bythotrephes cederstroemi, in which we incubated this predator with known prey to determine prey preference and predation rates. We also performed an allozyme analysis of prey tissue in the gut of B. cederstroemi collected from several stations around Lake Michigan to determine what prey types are chosen in the field. We found that B. cederstroemi does not fit the standard invertebrate predator mold: adult B. cederstroemi prefer large (>2.0 mm) Daphnia pulicaria over smaller individuals; the elongated tailspine and helmet of Daphnia galeata mendotae are not effective deterrents to B. cederstroemi predation; and B. cederstroemi is a generalist predator with the potential to consume a significant portion of cladoceran production in Lake Michigan. Oxygen concentration profiles have been measured, by means of with microelectrodes in sediments of Lake Baikal and Lake Malawi, along transects allowing to give a survey of two major ancient Rift lakes: Lake Baikal (Eastern Siberia) and Lake Malawi (East Africa), along depth transects in the constitutive basins of the lakes and/or of relevant depths with regard to oxygen (including including the deepest point, 1680 m, in Lake Baikal). Sediment oxygen penetration depths (SOPs) display very different patterns, depending on the lake in the two lakes. In Lake Baikal, SOPs are variable, show no significant relationship with bathymetric depth and are surprisingly deep on Akademichesky ridge (> 50.0 mm), emphasizing the distinctive feature of this region in the lake. While the Selenga river is an important source of eutrophication, the similarity of SOP-values in the Selenga shallow with those of most other sites suggests either a dilution of organic material by allochthonous matter, or a strong south-to-north transport of particles. In Lake Malawi, available oxygen is restricted to a maximum of three millimetres of the sediment, and there is a negative relationship with bathymetric depth, as a result of a steady decline of oxygen concentration with depth through the water column. Amongst the few parameters known to affect SOPs, the oxygen consumption by the sediment seems the most significant in both lakes. SOP-values furthermore confirm differences in the trophic status of Baikal and Malawi, respectively. The importance of oxygen as a factor likely to create ecological segregation for benthic organisms is discussed. Lake Malawi offers possibilities of bathymetric segregation but no vertical segregation in the sediment. In contrast, no bathymetric segregation related to oxygen is possible in Lake Baikal, but vertical segregation in the sediment is very likely. In the shallow waters of Lake Tanganyika, a benthic cichlid Xenotilapia boulengeri rests in a cluster around the nesting sites of substrate-brooding cichlids Lepidiolamprologus attenuatus and L. elongatus . Experimental removal of parent Lepidiolamprologus guarding free-swimming young drastically reduced the number of X. boulengeri around these nesting sites within a few days, suggesting that their presence has a positive effect on attracting X. boulengeri . Xenotilapia boulengeri were less frequently disturbed by the scale-eating cichlids Perissodus microlepis and Plecodus straeleni when they remained near nesting sites of these species than when stayed away. This was attributed to the territorial behaviour of guarding parents who drove away scale-eaters at greater distances, while allowing X. boulengeri , harmless to their young, to approach the nesting site. It is concluded that a clumped distribution of X. boulengeri results from differential tolerance of breeding parents toward intruders that produces a safety zone from scale-eaters.  相似文献

A portion of the former Lake Hula wetland (northern Israel) was re-flooded in spring 1994 and the physical, chemical and biological developments within the resulting new lake and wetland complex (Agmon) was followed closely by a multi-disciplinary scientific team. The first three years of study relating to Lake Agmon are reported in this issue of Wetlands Ecology & Management. We provide in this paper a general background on the Lake Hula Draining Project in the 1950s and the recent re-flooding and creation of the Agmon wetland.  相似文献

While pond culturing is still the staple of Chinese freshwater fisheries, its extensive development is handicapped by the increasing shortage of land resource for cereal production in face of China’s population growth. Accordingly, people have looked towards the development of aquaculture in lakes (and reservoirs) in the 1970s. This paper reviews the successful integrated measures taken in an experiment for raising fish in Donghu lake (East lake) of Wuhan. By way of (1) stocking the right kinds of fish; (2) producing a large number of sizeable fingerlings; (3) improving fish screens; (4) controlling predatory fish; and (5) applying the ‘driving and concentrating’ bulk harvesting fishing method, fish production of the lake has increased steadily from 180 t in 1971 to 800 t in 1978, and then to 1840 t in 1995, all in an area of 1500 ha, and all without any supplementary feeding. Integrated aquaculture in paddy fields, known to be beneficial to both rice and fish production, has been regaining momentum in recent years. The paper summarizes its underlying principle, its benefits—economical, social and ecological—and the prospect of its development in China.  相似文献

It has been estimated that Lake Malawi, Africa, contains 500–650 endemic species of cichlid fishes, the largest number of vertebrate species endemic to any comparable sized area on the planet. As many of these putative species cannot be distinguished anatomically, these estimates of species richness depend to a great extent on the assumption that sympatrically occurring male colour morphs represent biological species. We have tested this assumption using a combination of behavioural observations of courtship and microsatellite DNA analysis for six putative species of the Pseudotropheus ( Tropheops ) complex and three of the Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) complex occurring sympatrically at Nkhata Bay. We were unable to demonstrate assortative courtship for the species pairs Pseudotropheus ( Maylandia ) zebra / P . 'gold zebra' or P. ( Tropheops ) 'band'/ P. ( T .) 'rust' because we were unable to distinguish between the females of these taxa. All other taxa showed clear assortative courtship, except for P. ( T .) 'deep', a deep-water species which was rarely observed. Fixation indices (θST for the infinite allele model, and R ST for the stepwise mutation model) calculated from six microsatellite DNA loci demonstrated significant deviations from panmixia in all pairwise comparisons of putative species, indicating little or no gene flow between populations. All taxa showed high levels of allelic diversity providing evidence that genetic bottlenecking may have been of limited importance in the speciation process. Assortative mating among taxa differing only in male colouration is supportive of theories that speciation in these fishes has been driven by sexual selection by female choice.  相似文献

应用人工神经网络方法,以化学需氧量、总氮、总磷和透明度作为评价参数,经反复尝试,构建了具有4层结构用于评价湖泊富营养化的误差逆传播网络.其输入层有4个神经元,2个隐含层也各有4个神经元,输出层有1个神经元.以太湖富营养化评价标准作为样本模式提供给网络,按照误差逆传播网络的学习规则对网络进行训练,经过37684次学习后,网络达到预先给定的收敛标准.使网络具备了识别湖泊富营养化程度的功能.应用该网络对我国17个湖泊的富营养化程度进行评价,操作过程简便易行,评价结果切合实际,展示了这种方法的一系列优点.  相似文献

Microsatellite loci were used to evaluate the level of polyandryand intraspecific brood mixing in Protomelas c.f. spilopterus,a paedophagous, maternal mouth-brooding cichlid from Lake MakaiAfrica. We found that broods were fertilized by one to threemales, which was a reduced level of multiple paternity comparedto other mouth-brooding cichlids. Low density of breeding malesand the risk of intraspecific predation are likely explanationsfor reduced polyandry. Intraspecific brood-mixing was foundin four out of the six broods examined, with the proportionsof foreign fry ranging from 6% to 65%. The potential originsof brood mixing are discussed, although no firm conclusionscan be drawn given the limited behavioral observations for thisspecies.  相似文献
