One-year-old olive trees (cv. Koroneiki) were grown in plastic containers of 50 000 cm3 under full daylight and 30, 60, and 90 % shade for two years. The effects of shade on leaf morphology and anatomy, including stomatal density and chloroplast structure, net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and fruit yield were studied. Shade reduced leaf thickness due to the presence of only 1–2 palisade layers and reduced the length of palisade cells and spongy parenchyma. The number of thylakoids in grana as well as in stroma increased as shade increased, while the number of plastoglobuli decreased in proportion to the reduced photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The higher the level of shade, the lower the stomatal and trichome density, leaf mass per area (ALM), g s, and P N. Shade of 30, 60, and 90 % reduced stomatal density by 7, 16, and 27 %, respectively, while the corresponding reduction in P N was 21, 35, and 67 %. In contrast, chlorophyll a+b per fresh mass, and leaf width, length, and particularly area increased under the same shade levels (by 16, 33, and 81 % in leaf area). P N reduction was due both to a decrease in PAR and to the morphological changes in leaves. The effect of shade was more severe on fruit yield per tree (32, 67, and 84 %) than on P N indicating an effect on bud differentiation and fruit set. The olive tree adapts well to shade compared with other fruit trees by a small reduction in stomatal and trichome density, palisade parenchyma, and a significant increase in leaf area.

Heterocoma is a Brazilian endemic genus resulting from the dismemberment of Sipolisiinae, in which only representatives with fruit containing phytomelanin were included in the genus. As the fruits of Asteraceae are known to be systematically important at various taxonomic levels and Heterocoma fruit has not been described previously, we studied the morphology and anatomy of the cypselas of all species of the genus, comparing them with other fruits in the family containing phytomelanin and evaluating the systematic potential at the specific and tribal levels. The fruits were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy. The morphological features of the fruit, including the carpopodium, ribs and pappi, varied in the genus and demonstrated potential for species discrimination. The anatomy showed a pattern for the genus with a uniseriate exocarp, the outer mesocarp composed of fibres arranged in several layers, the inner mesocarp composed of several layers of parenchyma, the endocarp, and phytomelanin deposited between the inner and outer mesocarp. This anatomical pattern of phytomelanin deposition differs from that of other Asteraceae with phytomelanin in their fruit. Heterocoma is also the only genus in Vernonieae that has phytomelanin deposition in the cypselas. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 179 , 255–265.

Wood decay under the microscope
Many aspects of the interactions between host wood structure and fungal activity can be revealed by high resolution light microscopy, and this technique has provided much of the information discussed here. A wide range of different types of decay can result from permutations of host species, fungal species and conditions within wood. Within this spectrum, three main types are commonly recognised: brown rot, white rot and soft rot. The present review explores parts of the range of variation that each of these encompasses and emphasizes that degradation modes appear to reflect a co-evolutionary adaptation of decay fungi to different wood species or the lignin composition within more primitive and advanced wood cell types. One objective of this review is to provide evidence that the terms brown rot, white rot and soft rot may not be obsolete, but rigid definitions for fungi that are placed into these categories may be less appropriate than thought previously. Detailed knowledge of decomposition processes does not only aid prognosis of decay development in living trees for hazard assessment but also allows the identification of wood decay fungi that can be used for biotechnology processes in the wood industry. In contrast to bacteria or commercial enzymes, hyphae can completely ramify through solid wood. In this review evidence is provided that wood decay fungi can effectively induce permeability changes in gymnospermous heartwood or can be applied to facilitate the identification of tree rings in diffuse porous wood of angiosperms. The specificity of their enzymes and the mild conditions under which degradation proceeds is partly detrimental for trees, but also make wood decay fungi potentially efficient biotechnological tools.

Abstract. Cyperus longus L. , which has a widespread but disjunct distribution throughout Europe and extends northwards into Britain, was found to be a C4 species based upon its Kranz leaf anatomy, low CO2 compensation point and the labelling of malate as an early product of 14CO2 fixation. The photosynthetic characteristics of C. longus are similar to many other C4 species with a high maximum rate of photosynthesis (> 1.5 mg CO2 m −2 s −1) and a relatively high temperature optimum (30–35°C), but unlike many C4 species the rate of photosynthesis does not decline rapidly below the optimum temperature and a substantial rate (0.6 mgCO2 m−2s−1)occursat 15°C. Leaf extension is very slow at 15°C and shows a curvilinear response to temperatures between 15 and 25°C. Leaves extend at a rate of almost 4 cm d−1 at 25°C.

JARVIE, J. K. & BARKWORTH, M. E., 1992. Anatomical variation in some perennial Triticeae. Cross-sectional anatomy of glumes and leaf blades was examined in 22 taxa of the perennial Triticeae. The taxa included diploids and polyploids based largely on various combinations of the E, J and S genomes. The objective was to determine how much correlation exists between anatomical characteristics and genomic constitution. The data were analysed by principal co-ordinate and cluster analyses. The results showed that monogenomic species based on different genomes were readily distinguishable on glume and leaf blade features. Most heterogenomic taxa exhibited some aspects of each genome present except in the case of JE allotetraploids, which exhibited no E genome characteristics.

Wood area index (WAI; total surface area of branches and bole per unit of land area) is an important yet often neglected forest structural attribute. Branchwood surface area, in particular, has significant implications for many ecophysiological processes including total respiration and interception of radiation and rainfall. Branch surface area was estimated at the branch-, tree-, and stand-level for 33 Douglas-fir (Pseduotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) plantations in the Oregon Coast Range. Patterns in WAI, leaf area index (LAI; total surface area of needles per unit of land area), tree area index (TAI=WAI+LAI) and various ratios of these dimensions were then investigated. The main axes of primary branches (those attached to the main stem) comprised 82±13% of total branchwood surface area. Tree surface area (needles + woody tissue) increased with increasing tree size and crown length, and decreased with greater intensity of Swiss needle cast (SNC). At the stand-level, woody surface area increased with greater stand density and decreased with more severe SNC, but on average it constituted 29±12% of total tree surface area. Branchwood surface area and bole surface area contributed equally to WAI. The variation in WAI for a given LAI has important implications for radiation and rainfall attenuation in these stands and for accurate partitioning of intercepted radiation between photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic tissues.

The dynamics of the biodegradation of wood by brown-rot fungi (Coniophora puteana, Poria placenta, and Gloephyllum trabeum) was investigated by the water vapour sorption method. The change in wood microstructure characteristics (specific surface and concentration of surface hydrophilic centres) with increasing exposure time correlated with reduction in mass and change in composition. Two-to-eight-nanometer-wide micropores, whose size and volume depended on the fungal species and exposure time, appeared in the wood. Methodological aspects of the application of sorption methods should be taken into account in the interpretation of the results.

Taiwania Hayata contains two species: T.flousiana Gaussen and T. cryptomerioides Hayata, both endemic to China. T. flousiana was investigated with both light and scanning electron microscopes in respect to shoot apex, external and internal surfaces of leaf cuticle, primary leaf, juvenal and mature leaves, young stem, secondary phloem and wood of stem, etc, It is shown that the shoot apex consists of the following five regions: (1) the apical initials; (2) the protoderm, (3) the subapical moher cells;. (4) the peripheral meristem, and (5) the pith mother cells. The periclinal and anticlinal division of the apical initials takes place with approximately equal frequency. The juvenal leaf is nearly triangular or crescent-shaped in cross section and belongs to the leaf type II. The mature leaf is quadrangular in cross section (the leaf type I). There are a progressive series of changes in size and shape of the leaf cross section. The stoma of the mature leaf is amphicyclic and occasionally tricyclic. The crystals in the juvenal leaf cuticle are more abundant than those in the mature leaf cuticle. The transfusion tissue conforms to the Cupressus type. The structure of juvenal leaf is the nearest to that in Cunninghamia unicanaliculata D. Y. Wang et H. L. Liu, while the mature leaf is similar to that of the Cryptomeria. Sclerenchymatous cells of the hypodermis in the young stem comprise simple layers and are arranged discontinuously. No primary fibers are found in the primary phloem. Medullary sheath is present between the primary xylem and the pith. There are some sclereids in the pith. The secondary phloem of the stem consists of regularly alternate tangential layers of cells in such a sequence: sieve cells, phloem parenchyma cells, sieve cells, phloem fibers, sieve cells. The phloem fiber may be divided into thick-walled and thin-walled phloem fiber. The crystals of calcium oxalate in the radial walls of sieve cells are abundant. Homogeneous phloem rays are uniseriate or partly biseriate, 1-48 (2-13) cells high, and of 26-31 strips per square mm. Growth rings of the wood in Taiwania are distinct. The bordered pits on the radial walls of early wood tracheids are usually uniseriate, occasionally paired and opposite pitting. Wood parenchyma is present, and its cells contain brown resin substances. Their end walls are smooth, lacking nodular thickenings. Wood rays are homogeneous. Cross-field pits are cupressoid. Resin canals are absent. Based on the anatomy of Taiwania and comparison with the other genera of Taxodiaceae, the authors consider the establishment of Taiwaniaceae not reasonable, but rather support the view that the genus is better placed between Cuninghamia and Arthrotaxis in Taxodiaceae.
