Abstract. Effects of form, colour, and pheromone of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Koch), quiescent deutonymphs on adult male guarding behaviour were tested independently and in combination using no-choice and sequential-presentation bioassays. Significantly more males approached yellow stimuli sources than non-yellow sources in all bioassays, suggesting that males orient visually to yellow carotenoid pigments of quiescent deutonymphs. The form and extract (pheromone) of quiescent deutonymphs did not increase male approach frequency. All three cues elicited male arrestment; contrasts of 2 × 3 factorial bioassay data showed that male tactile and/or visual perception of form increased arrestment frequency more than did contact chemoperception of extract, while extract perception caused more arrestments than did visual perception of colour. All three cues prolonged arrestment duration and increased frequency of intermale conflicts near stimuli sources, but form had greater impact than did other cues on the numbers of conflicts observed during coguarding incidents. Significant interactions among stimuli were observed, indicating that presence of multiple stimuli had a synergistic effect on the duration of male response. Males approached and were arrested by all three stimuli combined as often as by quiescent deutonymphs, but arrestments caused by quiescent deutonymphs were longer than those elicited by artificial stimuli. This difference suggests that either additional cues or differences in pheromone release rates are involved in eliciting and prolonging male T. urticae guarding behaviour.  相似文献

We studied 20 electrophoretic loci in two populations ofAteles (Ateles paniscus paniscus andAteles paniscus chamek). We observed intrapopulational variation at the following loci: esterase D, glyoxalase 1, adenosine deaminase (A. p. chamek) and carbonic anhydrase 2 (A. p. paniscus). The two populations share the most frequent alleles at 17 loci, but we noted great differences in glyoxalase 1, adenosine deaminase and phosphoglucomutase 1.A. p. paniscus is monomorphic for theGLO1 *1 allele, which has a frequency of 6% inA. p.chamek. They did not share alleles in relation to the ADA and PGM1 loci. We found a CA2 allele, named hereCA2 *1, which has not been described previously in other neotropical primates (Sampaio et al., 1991a), inA. p. paniscus. The present results suggest that the geographical isolation represented by the Rio Amazonas has lasted long enough to support this level of divergence. These observations taken together with chromosomal findings, led us to endorse the proposal of two distinct species:Ateles paniscus andAteles chamek.  相似文献

Some species have sensory systems divided into subsystems with morphologically different sense organs that acquire different types of information within the same modality. Jumping spiders (family Salticidae) have eight eyes. Four eyes are directed anteriorly to view objects in front of the spider: a pair of principal eyes track targets with their movable retinae, while the immobile anterior lateral (AL) eyes have a larger field of view and lower resolution. To test whether the principal eyes, the AL eyes, or both together mediate the response to looming stimuli, we presented spiders with a video of a solid black circle that rapidly expanded (loomed) or contracted (receded). Control spiders and spiders with their principal eyes masked were significantly more likely to back away from the looming stimulus than were spiders with their AL eyes masked. Almost no individuals backed away from the receding stimulus. Our results show that the AL eyes alone mediate the loom response to objects anterior to the spider.  相似文献

Human pressures have increasingly placed keystone species, such as large cats, under threat. Together with forest loss, prey depletion is one of the main threats to the survival of jaguars (Panthera onca) and pumas (Puma concolor) throughout the Neotropics. Generally, primates are not considered main prey for jaguar and puma, and their inclusion in the diet could be indicative of ongoing prey species decline. Here, we investigate the effect of habitat type and disturbance on primate predation by large cats. Surveys took place during the dry seasons (March to June) of 2010 and 2011, covering a total of 608.5 km across 24 localities in the Uxpanapa Valley, Mexico. We found 65 felid scat samples with the aid of a wildlife scat detection dog, and then examined them to identify predator species and classify the prey remains they contained. Primates represented the most frequent prey (35%) for both jaguar and puma in our study site and constituted approximately half of the biomass consumed by these felines in the area. Primate remains were more likely to be found in scats surrounded by the lowest percentage of conserved forest or in areas surrounded by more villages, showing the potential effects of human activities on these species' populations. The high proportion of primates found in scats within our study site could be an early indication that populations of ungulates and other “typical” prey are beginning to collapse, and urgent conservation interventions are needed for both large cats and primates before they become locally extinct. Abstract in Spanish is available with online material.  相似文献
