The Egyptian Wolf Canis lupaster was recently rediscovered as a distinct species on the basis of both morphologic and molecular genetic evidence. Phenotypical variability, including coat colour of this species across its vast, ecologically diverse range is yet to be investigated. In this paper, we present the first record of melanistic individuals of this species and compare their morphological characters and mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences with those of typically coloured Canis lupaster and other closely related canids to verify their identity. We also study pelage polymorphism in a population of this species in the Egyptian Nile Valley and the Nile Delta and define its different colour variants. The typical colour, as well as the rare, very light and reddish coat colours are described. We discuss the possibility that the observed coat colour polymorphism is the result of hybridisation with the domestic dog and their potential adaptive significance.  相似文献

There are no reported data on hormonal fluctuations in black‐handed spider monkey males. On previous research about the reproductive physiology of this monkey we have found that during the dry season females show ovulatory estrogen peaks and males present the best quality semen. As part of an ongoing research, in this study we assessed seasonal variations in the concentration of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in three adult spider monkey males to corroborate the seasonal reproductive synchrony. At the same time sperm count and motility were evaluated to search for any correlation between those sperm parameters and hormonal concentrations. We took blood and semen samples (by electroejaculation) of anesthetized males throughout the rainy (June–September) and dry (October–May) months. Our results revealed that T and LH were higher throughout the dry season and there was a significant correlation between T concentration and sperm count. Although higher during the dry season, sperm motility tended to correlate with testosterone and LH levels. These results demonstrated that black‐handed spider monkeys have a tendency to show a seasonal pattern of reproduction being the dry season the most likely time to achieve fertilization. Am. J. Morphological study on spermatids and spermatozoa have long been performed regarding various changes of cell organelles during spermiogenesis as a potential phylogenetic inference. Based on the fact that the number of germ cells per cyst increases according to a geometric series, knowing the exact number of germ cells in a certain stage may lead to the total number of sperms produced per cyst. In spiders, however, the entire process takes place in a cyst represented by a spermatogonium, producing sperms in spherical shape. It is very difficult to count the exact number of germ cells produced per cyst through a 2D image analysis. Therefore, we applied a 3D image of testicular cyst of an orb-weaving spider to visualize the exact number of germ cells produced from a cyst. In this study, 2D images obtained from serially sectioned micrographs were scanned precisely and reconstructed using a 3D-rendering technique. Finally, this research reveals that the exact number of spermatozoa produced each cyst in Larinioides cornutus appeared to be 128 (27), which indicates that a single spermatogonium undergoes five mitotic divisions and two maturing divisions (meiosis) to produce final spermatozoa.  相似文献

Abstract. Data are presented on the development from egg to adult of a wild-type and an albino strain of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae on a semi-synthetic liquid diet.The diet is a modification of the diet developed by Van der Geest et al. (1983).Apart from the standard diet without added carotenoids, diets supplemented with either β-carotene or vitamin A were tested.A high incidence of diapause was found in the wild-type strain under short-day conditions on all three diets.No diapause was found in the albino mutant under short days on the standard diet.Partial restoration of the photoperiodic response was obtained after addition of β-carotene to the diet, and full restoration was found after the addition of vitamin A.Diapause could be terminated in diet-reared diapausing females of both strains after a cold rest of 3 weeks at 4°C.The results lead to the conclusion that vitamin A or a derivative of vitamin A probably functions as the photoreceptor pigment for the photoperiodic induction of diapause in the spider mite.  相似文献

Social cooperative spiders from diverse taxonomic families share life-history and demographic traits, including highly inbred colony structure. The combination of traits suggests constrained pathways for social evolution in spiders. The genus Stegodyphus has three independently evolved social species, which can be used as replicate samples to analyse population constraints in evolutionary time. We tested colony structure and population history of the social S. mimosarum from South and East Africa using mitochondrial DNA variation, and we compared the results to published data for the independently evolved social congener S. dumicola . S. mimosarum had many and diverse haplotypes (5–7% sequence divergence for ND1) but colonies were monomorphic and genealogically similar haplotypes occurred in abutting regions. These findings are nearly identical to results for S. dumicola and imply similar colony-level processes over evolutionary time in independently evolved social species. These population dynamics are discussed with respect to the apparent lack of cladogenesis in social spiders.  相似文献

Many organisms possess remarkable abilities to orient and navigate within their environment to achieve goals. We examined the orientation behavior of a riparian spider, the Long‐Jawed Orb Weaver (Tetragnatha elongata), when displaced onto the surface of the water. When displaced, spiders move with alternating movements of the first three leg pairs while dragging the most posterior pair of legs behind them. In addition, spiders often perform a series of orientation behaviors consisting of concentric circles before ultimately choosing a path of travel directly toward the nearest point to land. While the number of orientation behaviors increased with increasing distance from shore, distance from shore had no effect on the direction of travel, which was significantly oriented toward the closest shoreline. These results indicate a complex ability to orient toward land when displaced onto water, possibly to decrease the amount of time on the surface of the water and thus decrease predation risk.  相似文献

Summary In the subsocial terricolous spiderCoelotes terrestris, the young usually leave the maternal tube and disperse after a 4–6-week gregarious period. In the present experiment they were artificially prevented from dispersing, while being liberally provided with prey. Under such conditions they appeared to maintain a certain level of organization: reproduction, structured silken production, and stabilized mortality. This last characteristic was shown, using specifically designed tests, to be due to a higher tolerance level in group-maintained as compared to freely dispersed, adult spiders. The influence of social situations on tolerance tendencies was further assessed (together with the determining influence of the mother) by prematurely separating spiderlings from their brood. Such phenomena may be considered evidence of preadaptations to permanent social life in this subsocial species.  相似文献

Sticky prey capture threads are produced by many members of the spider infraorder Araneomorphae. Cribellar threads are plesiomorphic for this clade, and viscous threads are apomorphic. The outer surface of cribellar thread is formed of thousands of fine, looped fibrils. Basal araneomorphs produce non-noded cribellar fibrils, whereas more derived members produce noded fibrils. Cribellar fibrils snag and hold rough surfaces, but other forces are required to explain their adherence to smooth surfaces. Threads of Hypochilus pococki (Hypochilidae) formed of non-noded fibrils held to a smooth plastic surface with the same force under low and high humidities. In contrast, threads of Hyptiotes cavatus and Uloborus glomosus (Uloboridae) formed of noded fibrils held with greater force to the same surface at intermediate and high humidities. This supports the hypothesis that van der Waals forces allow non-noded cribellar fibrils to adhere to smooth surfaces, whereas noded fibrils, owing to the hydrophilic properties of their nodes, add hygroscopic forces at intermediate and high humidities. Thus, there appear to have been two major events in the evolution of adhesive mechanisms in spider prey capture thread: the addition of hydrophilic nodes to the fibrils of cribellar threads and the replacement of cribellar fibrils by viscous material and glycoprotein glue.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 1–8.  相似文献
