This paper reports new distribution records of large branchiopods for Mexico following a three year survey of the Baja California peninsula. The occurance of the anostracans Thamnocephalus mexicanus (Linder, 1941) and T. platyurus (Packard, 1877), the notostracan Lepidurus lemmoni (Holmes, 1894), and the spinicaudatans Eulimnadia cylindrova (Belk, 1989) and E. texana (Packard,1871), all represent the first records for the peninsula. An undescribed species of the anostracan genus Streptocephalus is recorded from the state of Baja California (Norte). The occurrence of the notostracan genus Triops and four other anostracan species on the peninsula is also confirmed. The conchostracan Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is recorded from the state of Quintana Roo. The collections of Lepidurus and Cyclestheria are the first records for México. These records increase the number of species of large branchiopods reported fromMéxico to 36: 20 Anostraca, 3 Notostraca, 11 Spinicaudata, and 2Laevicaudata. The present study describes a defined culturetechnique for the fairy shrimp, Streptocephalusdichotomus. It emphasizes reclamation of low-cost organiclive-stock waste(cow-dung), lime powder, and urea. These compounds wereused to enrich algal and diatom populations in themedium. These algae and diatoms were fed to filter feedingfairy shrimps to yield anostracanbiomass. A production of 262 ± 6 animals l–1was obtained in an experimental tank compared to 36 ± 4animals l–1 in the controls. Interestingly,the total number of clutches in experimentalfemales (12 ± 2), relative to the control (7 ± 1),increased too.  相似文献

The ontogeny of two calcium-binding proteins (calbindin-D28k and calretinin) was studied by immunohistochemical techniques in developing chick kidney. This study showed the presence of calbindin on the 5th incubation day and calretinin on the 7th incubation day in mesonephric distal and connecting tubules, and in the medial wall of the Wolffian duct. At later stages, immunostaining for these two proteins, in particular for calretinin, was also demonstrated in some metanephric proximal tubules. Glomeruli and Bowman's capsules were negative both in the mesonephros and metanephros. The presence of calretinin in the developing kidney has thus been demonstrated for the first time. The early expression of calbindin and calretinin in mesonephric distal tubules suggests their role in regulating the final excretion of calcium. The different patterns of immunoreactivity of the walls of the Wolffian duct can be correlated with their different histogenetic and histological features.  相似文献

Synopsis Latent period, rise time, contraction time, and half relaxation time from isotonic contractions of isolated white muscle samples from skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, were determined at 20°, 27°, and 34° C. These parameters were found to be inversely proportional to temperature (Q10 = 1.47, 1.67, 1.62, and 1.72, respectively). The data show that contraction time and the effect of temperature on contraction time of skipjack tuna white muscle are not unique when compared to other equal-sized teleosts. Based on contraction time, maximum swimming speeds at each muscle temperature were calculated and found not significantly to exceed the maximum speeds of other equal-sized teleosts, when comparisons are made at the same white muscle temperatures  相似文献

The sugar composition of the growth medium influenced the NAD+NADH ratio, pyruvate and lactate production, and ATP levels in both normal and transformed fibroblast cell lines growing in tissue culture. Removal of glucose led to a rapid three- to fourfold rise in the NAD+NADH ratio, followed by a slower decline in the content of ATP. However, there was no change in the adenylate energy charge [(ATP + 12ADP)/(ATP + ADP + AMP)] over a 2-h period. The NAD+NADH ratio was restored to the original level within 10 s of glucose readdition. The NAD+NADHratios in cell lines growing on galactose were as high as for those incubated without sugars; growth on mannose or fructose produced intermediate ratios. There was an inverse relationship between the NAD+NADH ratio and pyruvate-lactate production for glucose, fructose and galactose. Thus, all cell lines had a high production of pyruvate and lactate but a low NAD+NADH ratio when grown on glucose. In contrast, when galactose served as the sugar source, acid production was low, while the ratio was high. All cell lines had comparable hexokinase activity, and glucose was the best substrate, mannose intermediate and fructose poorest. Hexokinase activity did not correlate with the relative degree of utilization of the sugars. These results suggest that the sugar composition of the growth medium affects the metabolic pattern of a cell line, including the NAD+NADH ratio, the ATP content and the production of pyruvate and lactate.  相似文献

A fungal infection occurred in juvenile coonstripe shrimps,Pandalus hypsinotus, cultured at Hokkaido Institute of Mariculture, Hokkaido, Japan. The fungus was identified asLagenidium myophilum, the same fungus that had previously been isolated from the abdominal muscle of adult northern shrimps,Pandalus borealis, and larvae of the coonstripe shrimp. Histopathologically, numerous nonseptate hyphae were observed in the lesions, and melanized hemocytes were present within the blackened areas. The optimum temperature for growth of the present strain was 25–30°C, and the optimum NaCl concentration for growth was 0.5–1.0%. Its biological characteristics were compared with those ofLagenidium myophilum isolated from diseased larval coonstripe shrimp and adult northern shrimp. The fungus was pathogenic toward shrimps of the genusPandalus, which live in deep sea areas. The fungus could infect shrimps at various stages, from larva to adult.  相似文献

Human use of the ocean and its ecosystems continues to degrade coastal habitats around the world. Assessing anthropogenic impacts on these environments can be costly and manpower-intensive; thus, the development of rapid, remote techniques to assess habitat quality is important. We employed autonomous hydrophone receivers to record the soundscapes of healthy, sponge-rich hard-bottom habitat in Florida Bay, Florida (USA) and hard-bottom areas impacted by sponge die-offs. We also recorded sounds emanating from individual sponges of three species that were isolated in underwater sound booths, and then enumerated the invertebrates (mostly snapping shrimp) dwelling within the canals of each sponge. From these recordings, a modified cylindrical sound propagation model was used to estimate distances to individual snapping shrimp snaps. Using the program Distance, we estimated snapping shrimp population density and abundance within both habitat types. More snapping shrimp snaps per unit time were recorded in healthy hard-bottom areas as compared to degraded hard-bottom areas. In addition, the average distance to a snap source was greater within degraded hard-bottom areas than within healthy hard-bottom areas. As a consequence, the estimated density and abundance of snapping shrimp were one to two orders of magnitude greater within healthy habitat than within degraded habitat. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using acoustic sampling and modeling to rapidly assess populations of soniferous benthic indicator species, whose vocalizations may yield indirect estimates of habitat quality.  相似文献
