Summary The effect of the postnatal maternal environment, simulated by rearing mice in litters of three, six or nine, on body weight and body composition was investigated in three lines of mice differing widely in growth rate. The lines were selected for high (H6) and low (L6) 6-week body weight while the control line was maintained by random selection. Body weight and weights and percentages of ether extract, water, ash and protein at 21, 42, 63 and 84 days were recorded. With few exceptions, there were positive correlated responses to selection in body weight and in weights of body components. At 21 and 42 days the correlated responses were larger in L6 mice than in H6 mice. Body weight and weights of body components were larger for mice reared in litters of three than for those reared in litters of nine. Also, mice reared in litters of six were intermediate in body weight and weights of some of the body components between those reared in litters of three and nine. Differences in body weight and weights of body components due to postnatal maternal environment were small by comparison with differences due to genetic line. There were significant line by maternal environment interactions in body weight at 21 days and in ether extract weight at 21 and 63 days. Line and maternal environment differences in percentages of body components did not follow any consistent trend. The results for percentages of body components were further complicated by line x maternal environment interactions. estimates of heat storage (S) revealed that although the rate of S was similar between genders [42.1 (6.6) and 46.1 (9.7) W · m−2 for F and M, respectively], S expressed per unit of total mass was significantly lower for F [7.76 (1.44) kJ · kg−1] compared with M [9.45 (1.26) kJ · kg−1]. When subjects were matched for body fatness (n = 8 F and 8 M), tolerance times [124.5 (14.7) and 140.3 (27.4) min for F and M, respectively] and S [8.67 (1.44) and 9.39 (1.05) kJ · kg−1 for F and M, respectively] were not different between the genders. It was concluded that females are at a thermoregulatory
disadvantage compared with males when wearing protective clothing and exercising in a hot environment. This disadvantage can
be attributed to the lower specific heat of adipose versus non-adipose tissue and a higher percentage body fatness.

An abundant ichnological material composed of xiphosuran trackways and isolated traces was discovered in Upper Jurassic limestones from the Causses Basin (Causse Méjean, Lozère, France). The morphology of the imprints supports their identification as Kouphichnium isp. In contrast to the most frequent case, the trackways are composed of omnipresent pusher imprints sometime associated with leg traces, but with no telson mark. We argue that this pattern reflects actual surface traces rather than an incomplete set of undertracks. The size distribution of the sampled ichnites is broadly bimodal. This is best explained by sexual dimorphism, a phenomenon frequently observed in modern xiphosurans. Analysis of the trace fossils further suggests that several growth stages are recorded and that the horseshoe crabs were walking in a protected and flat environment like a lagoon. This area, certainly close to a mating ground, was occasionally affected by a continental influence. The biometric study of the tracks suggests a gigantic size for the trackmakers whose body may have reached 84 cm in length. This discovery complements the few reports on other gigantic horseshoe crabs in the Jurassic of Western Europe, thus casting doubt on the postulated increase in body size from the Palaeozoic to the Recent. Furthermore, a literature review shows that there are still major gaps in the record of limulid body-fossils and tracks. Thus, neither of these archives can be taken at face value for quantifying the body-size evolution of horseshoe crabs. 相似文献

用 7条舟山眼镜蛇 (Najaatra)研究动物对光暗周期加热光源反应所导致的体温变化。设计两项实验 ,每项实验历时 9d。实验一光照期覆盖整个白天 ,实验二光照期覆盖整个晚上。眼镜蛇仅在加热光源开启期间进行体温调节 ,但光照期内任何阶段都未发现所有个体同时处于热活动状态。两项实验中热活动个体百分比的时间变化显著 ,实验二热活动个体百分比波动相对大于实验一。在加热光源开启期间 ,实验一热活动眼镜蛇的百分比总体上大于实验二。在两项实验中 ,热活动眼镜蛇体温的时间变化都不显著。实验一热活动眼镜蛇的体温高于实验二 ,而两项实验中不处于热活动状态的眼镜蛇的平均体温无显著差异。实验一热活动眼镜蛇 (31 1±0 8°C)选择的体温上限高于实验二眼镜蛇 (2 6 0± 0 9°C)。在两项实验的任何时间段内 ,眼镜蛇的体温都不低于环境温度。 相似文献

Summary Suspensions of collagen fibrils obtained from derma of Elasmobranchia and Actinopterygia of different body sizes and developmental stages were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Fibril diameters were measured and classified into groups comprising a 20 nm diameter interval. Diagrams showing fibril populations of each fish were made. The measurements were averaged and their confidence intervals and standard errors determined. For each species other diagrams were plotted in which the mean diameters were correlated to the body length of each sample. The results show that: 1) a correlation exists between an increase in diameter of collagen fibrils and somatic growth until sexual maturity is reached; 2) fibril populations are subsequently spread over a wider range due to the presence in the derma of classes of newly formed and therefore thinner fibrils. The deposition of new fibrils is possibly influenced by individual factors; 3) no relationship exists between mean fibril diameter and body size; 4) no relationship exists between phylogenetic position and pattern of diameter distribution.Research supported by a grant from C.N.R. Obestatin is purported to be a peptide hormone encoded in preproghrelin. We studied the metabolic effects of continuous infusion of obestatin via subcutaneously implanted osmotic mini-pumps. Administration of up to 500nmol/kg body weight/day obestatin did not change 24h cumulative food intake or body weight in rats. Similarly, no effects were observed when obestatin was infused at 1000nmol/kg body weight/day for seven days. This dose of obestatin infused during a 24h fast did not alter weight loss, suggesting that obestatin has no effect on energy expenditure, and this dose did not alter glucose or insulin responses during an IPGTT. Obestatin was originally proposed to interact with GPR39 and subsequently the receptor for GLP-1. While both receptors are expressed in pancreatic islets, incubation with obestatin did not alter insulin release from islets in vitro. Moreover, obestatin did not bind to INS-1 beta-cells or HEK cells overexpressing GLP-1 receptors or displace GLP-1 binding to these cells. 为了研究在低蛋白质饲料中补充晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈生长、体组成和免疫指标的影响,根据鱼体的必需氨基酸组成模式设计了7种等能的试验饲料。其中4种饲料(45CP、40CP、35CP和30CP)的粗蛋白质水平分别为45%、40%、35%和30%,另3种饲料(40AA、35AA和30AA)是在低蛋白质饲料(40CP、35CP和30CP)的基础上添加必需氨基酸,使它们的必需氨基酸含量与45CP(对照组)相一致。用上述饲料对初始体重为(10.13±0.01)g的大口黑鲈进行了89d的饲养试验。饲养试验在室内循环水养殖系统中进行,每种饲料设3个重复,每重复放养30尾鱼。方差分析显示:试验鱼的生长性能、饲料效率、全鱼和肌肉的粗蛋白质含量、成活率以及免疫指标均随着饲料蛋白质含量的降低而显著降低(P0.05)。添加必需氨基酸的35AA和30AA的饲料效率和蛋白质保留率分别显著高于对应的未添加必需氨基酸的35CP和30CP组(P0.05),但仍显著低于45CP组(P0.05)。40AA的试验鱼血清溶菌酶活性和血清补体活性与45CP组差异不显著(P0.05)。35AA和30AA组的头肾白细胞呼吸爆发活性显著高于35CP和30CP组(P0.05)。30AA组的全鱼粗蛋白质含量以及肥满度显著高于30CP(P0.05)。各组试验鱼的水分和灰分均无显著差异(P0.05)。回归分析显示:在低蛋白质饲料中补充晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈幼鱼的生长、饲料效率和蛋白质保留率所产生的影响与其引起增加了的饲料蛋白质水平而不是饲料的必需氨基酸水平正相关。研究表明,在低蛋白质饲料中补充的晶体必需氨基酸对大口黑鲈的生长、体组成和免疫指标产生的有益作用不及等量的以蛋白质为来源的必需氨基酸。 相似文献

During the period 2004-2008 the distribution, settlement, and growth of first-year shipworms (Teredo navalis L., 1758) was studied by exposing fir and oak panels in the Port of Rotterdam area, which is situated in the Rhine-Meuse estuary in the Netherlands and covers the complete salinity gradient. Shipworms were found yearly in the western large polyhaline harbours. On only a few occasions were they were found in harbours that showed large seasonal and daily fluctuations in salinity. In 2006 the shipworm was found in fir panels 20 km upstream from the polyhaline harbours, demonstrating their ability to travel with the tidal currents over considerable distances and to settle once the abiotic conditions become favourable. Although the water temperatures allowed them to breed from April until November, infestations were not found before September, and from the size of the animals in the panels it was concluded that in the Port of Rotterdam area they spawned from August until the end of November. The settlement height was negatively correlated with the distance of the panels to the sea floor. In the first season after settlement they showed a substantial growth rate of 0.18 cm day−1. The longest shipworm found measured 36.8 cm after 4-5 months of growth after settlement. Infestations and growth were lower in oak than in fir wood. In 2006 the maximum consumption of wood by individuals settled in the same year in panels at the bottom accounted for 12.4%. Shell size and body length of the animal after the first season of growth showed a significant positive logarithmic relation. In both 2006 and 2007 a similar relation between the average boring tube diameter and the length of the animals was found. Lower river discharges leading to salinisation of the eastern part of the Port of Rotterdam area create conditions favourable for the shipworm, with serious consequences for the piles upon which the quays are built. 相似文献
