Most studies on animal physiology and behaviour are conducted in captivity without verification that data are representative
of free-ranging animals. We provide the first quantitative comparison of daily torpor, thermal biology and activity patterns,
conducted on two groups of sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps, Marsupialia) exposed to similar thermal conditions, one in captivity and the other in the field. Our study shows that activity
in captive gliders in an outdoor aviary is restricted to the night and largely unaffected by weather, whereas free-ranging
gliders omit foraging on cold/wet nights and may also forage in the afternoon. Torpor occurrence in gliders was significantly
lower in captivity (8.4% after food deprivation; 1.1% for all observations) than in the field (25.9%), mean torpor bout duration
was shorter in captivity (6.9 h) than in the field (13.1 h), and mean body temperatures during torpor were higher in captivity
(25.3°C) than in the field (19.6°C). Moreover, normothermic body temperature as a function of air temperature differed between
captive and free-ranging gliders, with a >3°C difference at low air temperatures. Our comparison shows that activity patterns,
thermal physiology, use of torpor and patterns of torpor may differ substantially between the laboratory and field, and provides
further evidence that functional and behavioural data on captive individuals may not necessarily be representative of those

Control of infections with Dictyocaulus viviparus is difficult due to its volatile epidemiology. In the absence of predictive models, ‘vigilance and treatment’ is today’s mainstay for control. In order to evaluate the potential of predictive model development to support a more preventative approach, this longitudinal study aimed at understanding the influence of weather factors on D. viviparus bulk tank milk antibody ELISA results. Bulk tank milk samples were analysed with a Major Sperm Protein-based ELISA (expressed as an optical density ratio) twice monthly on 717 Flemish dairy farms during the grazing season (April–October) in 2018. Meteorological data of the sampled farms were obtained at 1 km spatial scale using the ALARO-SURFEX climate model. A mixed effects model showed that the bulk tank milk optical density ratio was significantly associated with the month of sampling, evapotranspiration, temperature and its quadratic term, the number of hot days and the number of rainy days in the 7–8 weeks prior to sampling. There were significant farm effects involved. The model’s accuracy to predict bulk tank milk optical density ratio infection status was 80%, while optical density ratios were generally overestimated by 38%. Inclusion of the previous (2-week-old) optical density ratio values increased accuracy to 86% and reduced the mean square error. We conclude that meteorological parameters have a predictive value for bulk tank milk optical density ratio results, while further research should evaluate model improvements through the addition of herd management factors as well as confirm the predictive power through external validation in additional farms and years. 相似文献

Although chemical communication is the most widespread form of communication, its evolution and diversity are not well understood. By integrating studies of a wide range of terrestrial plants and animals, we show that many chemicals are emitted, which can unintentionally provide information (cues) and, therefore, act as direct precursors for the evolution of intentional communication (signals). Depending on the content, design and the original function of the cue, there are predictable ways that selection can enhance the communicative function of chemicals. We review recent progress on how efficacy-based selection by receivers leads to distinct evolutionary trajectories of chemical communication. Because the original function of a cue may channel but also constrain the evolution of functional communication, we show that a broad perspective on multiple selective pressures acting upon chemicals provides important insights into the origin and dynamic evolution of chemical information transfer. Finally, we argue that integrating chemical ecology into communication theory may significantly enhance our understanding of the evolution, the design and the content of signals in general. 相似文献

Smokers who are exposed to smoking-related cues show cardiovascular reactivity and smoking craving compared with their responses to neutral cues, and increased cue reactivity predicts decreased likelihood of successful cessation. Several brain imaging studies suggested four candidate brain regions that might differ in gray matter volumes and densities between smokers and nonsmokers. However, in these studies, smokers were only exposed to smoking-related objects. In our pilot study utilizing a virtual reality (VR) technique, virtual environments (VEs) were more immersive and evoked smoking craving more effectively than traditionally used methods. In this study, we sought to test whether smokers could experience cue-induced smoking craving inside the MRI scanner by using the VR system. The smoking cue reactivity scenario was based in part on our preliminary task and consisted of 2D and 3D (or VE) conditions. The group mean of participants had increased activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), left anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC), left supplementary motor area, left uncus, right inferior temporal gyrus, right lingual gyrus, and right precuneus in the 2D condition. Areas of differential activation in the 3D condition were as follows: left superior temporal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, and left inferior occipital gyrus in the 3D condition. This finding is consistent with those of previous studies of nicotine craving showing PFC and ACC activation. However, in the 3D condition, the PFC including the superior frontal gyrus as well as the superior temporal gyrus, inferior occipital gyrus, and cerebellum were activated. Therefore, in the 3D condition, participants seemed to have more attention, visual balance, and coordinating movement than in the 2D condition. 相似文献
