Four species of heath, occurring in the heathlands of Brittany, are compared regarding their water relations: Calluna vulgaris, Erica ciliaris, E. cinerea and E. tetralix. E. cinerea is unable to establish itself in wet heathland because of its intolerance of prolonged waterlogging. It is the Erica species best adapted to dry habitat conditions in Brittany. E. ciliaris canot establish itself in dry heathland and is less tolerant of waterlogging than E. tetralix. E. tetralix is the species best adapted to wet heathland, being tolerant of waterlogging, but can also establish itself in dry heathland. Of the three E. species it has the widest ecological range. Calluna is tolerant of both wet and dry conditions and has a wide ecological range. E. cinerea is typical of dry- and E. tetralix of wet heathland. Although both species did best in moist aerated soil in experimental cultures, neither is abundant in mesophilic heaths where E. ciliaris is dominant. One explanation may be competition for aerial space. E. cinerea and E. tetralix both have an upright growth, whereas E. ciliaris rapidly adopts a straggling bushy habit, with long rooting branches. E. ciliaris thus establishes large interpenetrating clumps. With increasing dryness E. ciliaris disappears and may be replaced by E. cinerea and, with increasing wetness and especially waterlogging, E. tetralix will take over. 相似文献

Physella heterostropha size distributions and densities were measured in Pen Branch delta, a thermally altered swamp of the Savannah River, South Carolina. During cessation of thermal input, measurements were taken in a highly impacted area and more natural area. Of the three substrates sampled, logs, small woody material and benthos, snail density was highest on small pieces of submerged wood and < 20% of the snails on logs were out of the water. Following resumption of thermal input, snail density was four times higher on logs than previously measured. Snails responded to elevated water temperatures by congregating in a narrow band slightly above the water. Snail size did not appear to affect their response. However, the thermal history of the snails influenced their behaviour and survival rates. Logs may be a potential refuge for snails when water temperature are greater greater than 38°C. However, our results indicate that long-term survival in this manner may be impossible. 相似文献

Larvae of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor, are able to absorb water vapour from subsaturated air, but adults cannot. This functional difference is paralleled by structural differences in the cryptonephridial rectal complex, the site of vapour absorption in the larva. Very distinctive differences occur in the rectal pad epithelium and these are reported in detail for the first time. The cells of the larval rectal pad are very closely apposed, forming a structural, and presumably functional, unit, whereas the cells of the adult rectal pad are more clearly separate. Intracellular organization also shows clear differences. These differences indicate that the rectal epithelium may play a more important role in vapour absorption than recently ascribed to it. Other, less striking, differences in the cryptonephric Malpighian tubules and perinephric membrane as previously recorded have largely been confirmed. Morphometric analysis suggests that diffusion alone could account for the observed absorption of water vapour across the larval system from rectal lumen to the lumen of the cryptonephric tubules, but this does not rule out the possibility that other transporting mechanisms are also involved. Radial diffusion and antero-posterior gradients may be facilitated by the predominently radial and circumferential arrangement of the rectal pad cells and the surrounding cryptonephric tubules. Reinvestigation of the isolating perinephric membrane and its insertion onto the rectal cuticle supports the conclusions that insertion occurs only posteriorly. The model incorporating anterior as well as posterior insertion does not apply. The membrane posteriorly encloses a single perirectal space between rectum and tubules and in this region no perinephric or peritubular space is found between inner and outer regions of the membrane. The role of interactions between chemical perturbations and biological constraints on detritivores occurring in polluted streams were investigated by analysing food absorption variation with stress. Absorption rate and efficiency of four Asellus aquaticus (L.) populations from differently polluted habitats were quantified with respect to the microbial guilds colonizing detritus. A twin tracer method was used. Detritus was microbially colonized in standard conditions and on each stream bottom to control for potential resource-independent variations among individuals. The relationship between length and weight was also determined on a random sample of individuals of each population. Differences of 14.6% in potential absorption efficiency and 11.3% in potential absorption rate were observed between populations from the least and the most polluted habitat. Actual (realized) variations were much stronger: from a minimum of a 60.1% reduction in absorption efficiency to a maximum of 93.8% for the rate. The realized food absorption and the individual weight per length showed the same pattern of variation among populations. This suggested that the availability of energy to isopods in nature was related to stream pollution and resource quality. Bottomup interactions appear to be the most relevant pathway through which chemical water pollution affects the Asellus populations studied. The potential resource-independent variations among individuals are also likely to be explained by temporal cascading of resource-mediated effects. 相似文献

Effects of fire on water and salinity relations of riparian woody taxa 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Water and salinity relations were evaluated in recovering burned individuals of the dominant woody taxa from low-elevation riparian plant communities of the southwestern U.S. Soil elemental analyses indicated that concentrations of most nutrients increased following fire, contributing to a potential nutrient abundance but also elevated alluvium salinity. Boron, to which naturalized Tamarix ramosissima is tolerant, was also elevated in soils following fire. Lower moisture in the upper 30 cm of burned site soil profiles was attributed to shifts in evapotranspiration following fire. Higher leaf stomatal conductance occurred in all taxa on burned sites. This is apparently due to higher photosynthetic photon flux density at the midcanopy level and may be partially mitigated by reduced unit growth in resprouting burned individuals. Predawn water potentials varied little among sites, as was expected for plants exhibiting largely phreatophytic water uptake. Midday water potentials in recovering Salix gooddingii growing in the Colorado River floodplain reached levels which are considered stressful. Decreased hydraulic efficiency was also indicated for this species by examining transpiration-water potential regressions. Recovering, burned Tamarix and Tessaria sericea had enriched leaf tissue 13C relative to unburned controls. Higher water use efficiency following fire in these taxa may be attributed to halophytic adaptations, and to elevated foliar nitrogen in Tessaria. Consequently, mechanisms are proposed which would facilitate increased community dominance of Tamarix and Tessaria in association with fire. The theory that whole ecosystem processes are altered by invading species may thus be extended to include those processes related to disturbance. 相似文献

Climate change and urbanisation are among the most pervasive and rapidly growing threats to biodiversity worldwide. However, their impacts are usually considered in isolation, and interactions are rarely examined. Predicting species' responses to the combined effects of climate change and urbanisation, therefore, represents a pressing challenge in global change biology. Birds are important model taxa for exploring the impacts of both climate change and urbanisation, and their behaviour and physiology have been well studied in urban and non-urban systems. This understanding should allow interactive effects of rising temperatures and urbanisation to be inferred, yet considerations of these interactions are almost entirely lacking from empirical research. Here, we synthesise our current understanding of the potential mechanisms that could affect how species respond to the combined effects of rising temperatures and urbanisation, with a focus on avian taxa. We discuss potential interactive effects to motivate future in-depth research on this critically important, yet overlooked, aspect of global change biology. Increased temperatures are a pronounced consequence of both urbanisation (through the urban heat island effect) and climate change. The biological impact of this warming in urban and non-urban systems will likely differ in magnitude and direction when interacting with other factors that typically vary between these habitats, such as resource availability (e.g. water, food and microsites) and pollution levels. Furthermore, the nature of such interactions may differ for cities situated in different climate types, for example, tropical, arid, temperate, continental and polar. Within this article, we highlight the potential for interactive effects of climate and urban drivers on the mechanistic responses of birds, identify knowledge gaps and propose promising future research avenues. A deeper understanding of the behavioural and physiological mechanisms mediating species' responses to urbanisation and rising temperatures will provide novel insights into ecology and evolution under global change and may help better predict future population responses. 相似文献

Abstract Water flow-innduced transport of Burkholderia cepacia strain P2 and Pseudomonas fluorescens strain R2f cells through intact cores of loamy sand and silt loam field soils was measured for two percolation regimes, 0.9 and 4.4 mm h−1 , applied daily during 1 hour. For each strain, transport was generally similar between the two water regimes. Translocation of B. cepacia , with 4.4 mm h−1 , did occur initially in both soils. In the loamy sand soil, no change in the bacterial distribution occurred during the experiment (51 days). In the silt loam, B. cepacia cell numbers in the lower soil layers were significantly reduced, to levels at or below the limit of detection. Transport of P. fluorescens in both soils also occurred initially and was comparable to that of B. cepacia . Later in the experiment, P. fluorescens was not detectable in the lower soil layers of the loamy sand cores, due to a large decrease in surviving cell numbers. In the silt loam, the inoculant cell distribution did not change with time. Pre-incubation of the inoculated cores before starting percolation reduced B. cepacia inoculant transport in the loamy sand soil measured after 5 days, but not that determined after 54 days. Delayed percolation in the silt loam soil affected bacterial transport only after 54 days. The presence of growing wheat plants overall enhanced bacterial translocation as compared to that in unplanted soil cores, but only with percolating water. Percolation water from silt loam cores appeared the day after the onset of percolation and often contained inoculant bacteria. With loamy sand, percolation water appeared only 5 days after the start of percolation, and no inoculant bacteria were found. Aquaporin CHIP, a 28 kDa channel forming protein, has been proposed to function as water channel in both erythrocyte and kidney proximal tubule. Recently, we have reported that in frog urinary bladder, a model of the kidney collecting tubule, polyclonal antibodies against human erythrocyte CHIP recognize and immunoprecipitate a 30 kDa protein from the epithelial cell homogenate. In the present work confocal fluorescence microscopy was used to determine the cellular and subcellular localization of CHIP28-like proteins in the urinary epithelium. A clear labeling of the apical border was found after Triton X-100 permeabilization. The labeling was distributed throughout the apical domain and not restricted to specific domains of the membrane. The staining was also present in the deeper confocal sections where the fluorescence seems to be localized at the cellular contour. No difference in the labeling patterns was observed between resting and ADH-treated bladder. Specificity of the staining was confirmed by the absence of the labeling pattern when antiserum was preadsorbed on CHIP28 protein immobilized on Immobilon P stripes. Our results suggest that CHIP-like proteins are not proteins inserted in the apical membrane during the antidiuretic response. Moreover, we do not know whether the labeling was due to the presence of CHIP28 itself or an as-yet-unidentified protein sharing immunological analogies with aquaporin CHIP. 相似文献
