The present experiment examined whether habituation contributes to within-session decreases in operant responding for water reinforcers. The experiment asked if this responding can be dishabituated, a fundamental property of habituated behavior. During baseline, rats’ lever pressing was reinforced by water on a variable interval 15-s schedule. During experimental conditions, rats responded on the same schedule and a new stimulus was introduced for 5 min at 15, 30 or 45 min into the 60-min session. The new stimulus was extinction, continuous reinforcement or flashing lights in different conditions. Rate of responding primarily decreased within the session during baseline. Introducing a new stimulus sometimes suppressed (extinction, continuous reinforcement) and sometimes increased (flashing lights) responding while it was in effect. The new stimulus increased responding after it ended and before it was presented in the session. The results are incompatible with the idea that non-habituation satiety factors (e.g., cellular hydration and blood volume) contributed to within-session changes in responding. These satiety factors should increase with increases in consumption, decrease with decreases in consumption and remain constant with constant consumption of water. Nevertheless, all stimulus changes increased operant responding for water. These results support the idea that habituation contributes to within-session decreases in responding for water reinforcers.  相似文献

A triazophos-degrading strain, Klebsiella sp. E6, was isolated by enrichment technology from soil that had been exposed long-term to triazophos. The strain grew well at pH 7.0-8.0 with a broad temperature profile ranging from 32 to 37 degrees C. It could keep good growth on methanol as carbon source and TAP as additional carbon source or nitrogen source. The experiment on the degradation activities of strain E6 showed that it utilized TAP more effectively when TAP was supplied as the sole nitrogen source, as opposed to additional carbon source. The intermediates of triazophos metabolism indicated that degradation occurred through a hydrolysis mechanism, one of the products of which, 1-phenyl-3-hydroxy-1,2,4-triazole, was also mineralized by strain E6.  相似文献

Synopsis We describe a total of 25 anadromous Sakhalin taimen Hucho perryi collected on the coast of Sarufutsu, northern Hokkaido, Japan in June 1997 and 1999. We examined morphology, stomach contents and growth of three anadromous taimen (one male and two females) in detail, which were preserved in good condition. The three taimen were aged and one female still had some eggs retained in her abdomen. The stomach contents of the three taimen consisted of sand lance Ammodytes personatus Girard and sculpin Triglops sp. On the basis of scale analyses, the growth rate of the three taimen was estimated by using the back-calculation method, and the highest rates were observed at young ages. Guanine pigmentation was present at the base of the caudal fin of each taimen and is considered as a potential morphological trait to differentiate anadromous from fluvial specimens. Another anadromous taimen, of which some individuals had reared for more than 3 years in seawater are also reported. For the conservation of this rare and endangered species, their migration route between rivers and sea should be protected  相似文献

We provide a quantitative account of local movements in the monogamous Australian species Hippocampus whitei, as a rare report of home range size in fishes living in seagrass habitats. Our study took place in shallow Posidonia seagrass beds in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), principally during January to March. Daily monitoring of individual seahorses during underwater observations revealed that both sexes maintained small and apparently undefended home ranges for several breeding cycles at least. Female home ranges were significantly larger than males, when analysed by both the minimum convex polygon and grid cell methods. Home range size was not correlated with either body size or seahorse density. Presumably, home ranges were small in H. whitei because camouflage (to avoid predation and to capture prey), mate fidelity and parental brooding meant they accrued little benefit (and potentially considerable cost) from moving more extensively. Sex differences in home range size may arise from constraints associated with male pregnancy. These fish are among the most sedentary of vertebrates, with relatively small home ranges equalled only by coral reef species. In terms of their conservation, relatively small protected areas may be sufficient to support breeding populations of H. whitei although that limited movement may result in considerable delays in the recolonisation of depleted areas.  相似文献

Membrane water transport is an essential event not only in the osmotic cell volume change but also in the subsequent cell volume regulation. Here we investigated the route of water transport involved in the regulatory volume decrease (RVD) that occurs after osmotic swelling in human epithelial Intestine 407 cells. The diffusion water permeability coefficient (Pd) measured by NMR under isotonic conditions was much smaller than the osmotic water permeability coefficient (Pf) measured under an osmotic gradient. Temperature dependence of Pf showed the Arrhenius activation energy (Ea) of a low value (1.6 kcal/mol). These results indicate an involvement of a facilitated diffusion mechanism in osmotic water transport. A mercurial water channel blocker (HgCl2) diminished the Pf value. A non-mercurial sulfhydryl reagent (MMTS) was also effective. These blockers of water channels suppressed the RVD. RT-PCR and immunocytochemistry demonstrated predominant expression of AQP3 water channel in this cell line. Downregulation of AQP3 expression induced by treatment with antisense oligodeoxynucleotides was found to suppress the RVD response. Thus, it is concluded that AQP3 water channels serve as an essential pathway for volume-regulatory water transport in, human epithelial cells.  相似文献

Lupinus albus plants can withstand severe drought stress and show signs of recovery 24 h after rewatering (RW). Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used to evaluate the effect of water deficit (WD) on the protein composition of the two components of the lupin stem (stele and cortex). This was performed at three distinct stress levels: an early stage, a severe WD, and early recovery. Protein characterisation was performed through mass spectrometric partial sequencing. Modifications in the protein expression were first noticed at 3 days of withholding water, when the plant water status was still unaffected but some decrease in the relative soil water content had already occurred. An increase in serine proteases, possibly associated with WD sensing, was an early alteration induced by WD. When the stress severity increased, a larger number of stem proteins were affected. Immunophilin, serine protease and cysteine protease (well-known components of animal sensing pathways) were some of these proteins. The simultaneous expression of proteases and protease inhibitors that reacted differently to the stress level and to RW was found. Although the level of protease inhibitors was significantly raised, RW did not cause de novo expression of proteins. Many amino acid sequences did not match known sequences of either protein or expressed sequence tag databases. This emphasises the largely unknown nature of stem proteins. Nevertheless, some important clues regarding the way the lupin plant copes with WD were revealed.  相似文献

We assessed the color discriminations by golden-headed lion tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) via a series of tasks involving a behavioral paradigm that maximizes the naturalness of the stimuli. The stimuli were pairs of Munsell color chips used in earlier experiments with human dichromats. We tested 3 male and 3 female monkeys with stimuli of random brightness values in order to assure that discriminations were based on color rather than brightness cues. Results indicate that each male and one female presented random performances for stimuli resembling hue conditions under which tamarins forage: oranges vs. greens. Two females exhibited discriminations consistent with allelic trichromacy. Findings indicate the presence of an M/L cone opsin polymorphism, a condition of most platyrrhines that is characterized by dichromatic and/or trichromatic females and dichromatic males. Interspecific differences in allelic frequency among lion tamarins raises the possibility that habitat fragmentation is affecting heterozygous frequencies, a trend that could impact tamarin foraging efficiency.  相似文献

Stress, adaptation and evolution are major concerns in conservation biology. Stresses from pollution, climatic changes, disease etc. may affect population persistence. Further, stress typically occurs when species are placed in captivity. Threatened species are usually managed to conserve their ability to adapt to environmental changes, whilst species in captivity undergo adaptations that are deleterious upon reintroduction into the wild. In model studies using Drosophila melanogaster, we have found that; (a) inbreeding and loss of genetic variation reduced resistance to the stress of disease, (b) extinction rates under inbreeding are elevated by stress, (c) adaptive evolutionary potential in an increasingly stressful environment is reduced in small population, (d) rates of inbreeding are elevated under stressful conditions, (e) genetic adaptation to captivity reduces fitness when populations are reintroduced into the 'wild', and (f) the deleterious effects of adaptation on reintroduction success can be reduced by population fragmentation.  相似文献

Recent studies on the threatened clouded apollo butterfly, Parnassius mnemosyne, have identified suitable habitats on a large scale. More detailed knowledge on specific habitat requirements of ovipositing females is still needed. Some earlier observations suggest that females just drop their eggs without discrimination. This study suggests that females can be rather choosy in their oviposition site selection and that they actively search for oviposition sites with suitable vegetation structure. By identifying factors influencing female oviposition, such as distance to shrub, valuable knowledge is generated for restoration plans considered in the study area. This stresses the importance of proper management of extant habitats in order to prevent local extinctions of P. mnemosyne and it also highlights the need for data on specific oviposition requirements in butterfly conservation.  相似文献

A recent report on trade in stag beetles and rhinoceros beetles in Japan highlights a number of issues of considerable importance for beetle conservation resulting from such trade over much of south east Asia. The popularity of these beetles has both positive and negative effects, and there is need for more effective control and monitoring of this trade to enhance positive values and reduce likely harm to species and habitats.  相似文献
