Factors affecting bird population dynamics include climate, harvesting by humans, and habitat changes. Here, we describe the
long-term (1972–2006) population trends of seven heron species in NW Italy, an area holding important European breeding populations
of these species. Grey (Ardea cinerea), purple (Ardea purpurea), and squacco (Ardeola ralloides) herons, and little egrets (Egretta garzetta) exhibited a strong logistic increase, leveling off around year 2000 at 3–23 times their initial level. Black-crowned night
herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) began by increasing like the former species but then dropped to initial levels. Such trends were found to be influenced
by several candidate ecological factors, as assessed by ARIMA models. Specifically, grey herons increased following a decrease
in human-induced mortality, as quantified by an index of hunting pressure, and an increase in winter temperatures. Little
egrets increased mainly with the increase of the extent of ricefields, whereas squacco herons increased with increasing rainfall
in the African wintering range. Black-crowned night herons were also positively affected by increasing African rainfall, but
only during 1972–1988, whereas in later years competition with other herons could have affected the species’ decline. The
improved protection of colony sites by special reserves was unlikely to be the primary trigger of the observed increase, although
obviously important for the long-term population persistence. In conclusion, our study shows that heron populations of southern
Europe are sensitive to environmental and climatic changes, as well as to temporal variation in human disturbance and changes
in foraging habitats, though the importance of the different factors differs among species. 相似文献

The development of methods providing reliable estimates of demographic parameters (e.g., survival rates, fecundity) for wild
populations is essential to better understand the ecology and conservation requirements of individual species. A number of
methods exist for estimating the demographics of stage-structured populations, but inherent mathematical complexity often
limits their uptake by conservation practitioners. Estimating survival rates for pond-breeding amphibians is further complicated
by their complex migratory and reproductive behaviours, often resulting in nonobservable states and successive cohorts of
eggs and tadpoles. Here we used comprehensive data on 11 distinct breeding toad populations (Bufo calamita) to clarify and assess the suitability of a relatively simple method [the Kiritani–Nakasuji–Manly (KNM) method] to estimate
the survival rates of stage-structured populations with overlapping life stages. The study shows that the KNM method is robust
and provides realistic estimates of amphibian egg and larval survival rates for species in which breeding can occur as a single
pulse or over a period of several weeks. The study also provides estimates of fecundity for seven distinct toad populations
and indicates that it is essential to use reliable estimates of fecundity to limit the risk of under- or overestimating the
survival rates when using the KNM method. Survival and fecundity rates for B. calamita populations were then used to define population matrices and make a limited exploration of their growth and viability. The
findings of the study recently led to the implementation of practical conservation measures at the sites where populations
were most vulnerable to extinction. 相似文献

Pelagic fish that are distributed circumtropically are characterised by a low population structure level as a result of a high capacity for dispersion and large population sizes. Nevertheless, historical and contemporary processes, including past demographic and/or range expansions, secondary contact, dispersal, gene flow, and the achievement of large effective population sizes, may play a part in the detection of divergence signals, especially in the case of tropical pelagic species, whose distribution range depends strongly on the sea surface temperature. The connectivity and historical demography of Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Mediterranean populations of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) was studied using partial sequences of the mitochondrial DNA NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1). AMOVA analyses revealed significant inter-oceanic divergence with three phylogroups located in the Indo-Pacific, Eastern Atlantic, and Mediterranean Sea, the last one being the most divergent. However, it was not possible to clearly observe any genetic differentiation between the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic populations, as has been reported for most tropical pelagic species of tuna and billfishes. This supports the assumption of recent dispersal among basins facilitated by the actual continuous distribution of dolphinfish populations. Moreover, the lack of a divergence signal for populations separated by the Panamanian Isthmus reveals that genetic drift does not exert a strong influence on tropical pelagic species with large effective population sizes. 相似文献

Through an experimental approach we investigate the role of mucus secretion in postlarvae of Pectinaria koreni (tubicolous polychaete) on their ability to drift within the benthic boundary layer or to stay at the water–substratum interface. Fall velocity measurements were conducted with either living or dead postlarvae which were allowed to sink into a 2 m long Plexiglas cylindrical chamber. Five groups of increasing size-classes were tested ranging from the very first benthic stage (1 mm < Tubelength < 2 mm: membranous tube present accounting for more than 75% of the total tube length) to older stages (6 mm < Tubelength < 10 mm: membranous tube absent). We used these results to propose the first estimates of dispersal distances by several post-larval stages secreting mucus or sinking passively through the water column. Experiments were carried out in the HYCOBENTHOS flume to determine values of critical shear velocity (u
*c) inducing bedload transport and further resuspension of postlarvae of increasing sizes. The influence of mucus secretion by recruits on their ability to stay or quit a ‘suitable’ substratum was investigated by using either living or dead individuals. Results showed that: (a) the ability to secrete mucus rapidly is limited to the younger stages; (b) fall velocity of postlarvae is drastically lowered by mucus secretion (5 orders of magnitude) and is higher for the older stages; (c) dead recruits behave similarly to ‘passive’ recruits; (d) horizontal distances of drift dispersal may be considerable (up to 800 m for a single 22 min trip); (e) mucus secretion may be used by the postlarvae to anchor themselves to the substratum. Cost-benefit of using the mucus secretion as a tool for recruitment and the related spatial scales are discussed. 相似文献

We assessed the effects of habitat fragmentation on reproductive success in natural populations of four forest herbs with differing life-history traits and whose distribution patterns appeared to be negatively affected by decreased habitat size and/or increased isolation: Carex sylvatica, Galium odoratum, Sanicula europaea and Veronica montana. Our aims were to test (1) whether habitat size and isolation are positively correlated with population size and isolation, respectively, (2) whether plant reproductive success, a major component of plant fitness, is reduced in small and/or isolated populations when also accounting for differences in habitat quality (edaphic conditions, light intensity) and the effects of plant size, and (3) whether species with different life histories are affected differently. There were significant positive relationships between habitat and population size and between habitat and population isolation in some, but not all of the species. We mostly found no negative effects of small population size or isolation on reproduction. However, reproductive success was reduced in small populations of Sanicula, and this effect was independent of differences in plant size and environmental conditions. The reduced fecundity in small populations may be a consequence of the Allee-effect, a possible mechanism being pollen limitation. Furthermore, the proportion of flowering ramets was reduced in small and isolated populations of Galium, which may have been caused by changes in population structure. Lastly, we found some evidence for largely outcrossing, non-clonal species to be more sensitive to reductions in population size, at least in terms of their reproductive success. 相似文献

The use of local seed provenances is often recommended in restoration and habitat creation because they are thought to be better adapted to local habitat conditions. However, spatial scales and the degree of population differentiation are not well known and germination is often not included in comparisons between provenances. We analysed germination as a key trait of plant development in five provenances of four species used for ecological restoration on arable land (wildflower strips). Germination was tested under different conditions in growth chambers (early vs. late spring) and in the field (non-competition vs. competition). We also examined the contribution of non-genetic (maternal) effects to population differentiation.Large differences in germination traits were found between the provenances in growth chambers and in the field. The ranking was species-specific, but largely consistent across all tested environments. Local provenances did not generally exhibit higher germination percentages in the field relative to non-local provenances. Due to the high stability of germination traits across various environments, growth chamber tests provided a reliable prediction for provenance differences in the field. The differences among provenances seemed to be largely genetically determined as the inclusion of seed mass in the analysis to control for maternal effects did not decrease the degree differences between-provenance differences. In one species, however, non-genetic contributions to population differentiation were found by comparing F1 seeds grown under homogeneous conditions and original seed material. We conclude that potentially large between-provenance differences in germination traits need to be considered in ecological restoration projects, particularly in non-permanent systems where they may determine vegetation development. 相似文献

We analyzed the differences in species richness, community composition, population structure and within-tree location of epiphytic bromeliads in contiguous secondary and mature forests in a premontane area in Costa Rica. Diversity in the mature forest was highest, and the communities differed in their composition as well as in the recruitment rates of the dominant species. Guzmania monostachia and Catopsis nutans dominated the secondary forests, whereas Tillandsia fasciculata and T. tricolor were more abundant in the mature forest. The secondary forest species showed high rates of seedling recruitment while the opposite was found for the mature forest species. Species presence and abundance among and within habitats did not correlate with their physiological (i.e. CAM vs. C3 photosynthesis) or morphological attributes. The spatial distribution patterns were similar among habitats; bromeliads tended to aggregate on a few relatively large phorophytes. The species shared a similar vertical stratification within habitats, except for the two dominant species in the early and mid-successional stages, although its ecological implication is not clear. With some exceptions, conspecifics of different ages were located on similar substrate types (i.e. stems, primary, secondary, or tertiary branches) within the tree-crowns, which suggests limited within-tree dispersion. Differences in species composition and rates of seedling recruitment among secondary and mature forest may arise from ecophysiological differences among species; however, the combined effect of seed availability and dispersal differences may have a larger influence. Thus, epiphyte community assembly can only be understood when the differences in habitat conditions, the availability of propagules, their dispersal characteristics and requirements for seedling establishment are known. 相似文献

Taxa involving three bisexually reproducing ploidy levels make green toads a unique amphibian system. We put a cytogenetic dataset from Central Asia in a molecular framework and apply phylogenetic and demographic methods to data from the entire Palearctic range. We study the mitochondrial relationships of diploids to infer their phylogeography and the maternal ancestry of polyploids. Control regions (and tRNAs between ND1 and ND2 in representatives) characterize a deeply branched assemblage of twelve haplotype groups, diverged since the Lower Miocene. Polyploidy has evolved several times: Central Asian tetraploids (B. oblongus, B. pewzowi) have at least two maternal origins. Intriguingly, the mitochondrial ancestor of morphologically distinctive, sexually reproducing triploid taxa (B. pseudoraddei) from Karakoram and Hindukush represents a different lineage. We report another potential case of bisexual triploid toads (B. zugmayeri). Identical d-loops in diploids and tetraploids from Iran and Turkmenistan, which differ in morphology, karyotypes and calls, suggest multiple origins and retained polymorphism and/or hybridization. A similar system involves diploids, triploids and tetraploids from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan where green toads exemplify vertebrate genomic plasticity. A new form from Sicily and its African sister species (B. boulengeri) allow internal calibration and divergence time estimates for major clades. The subgroup may have originated in Eurasia rather than Africa since the earliest diverged lineages (B. latastii, B. surdus) and earliest fossils occur in Asia. We delineate ranges, contact and hybrid zones. Phylogeography, including one of the first non-avian datasets from Central Asian high mountains, reflects Quaternary climate and glaciation. 相似文献

The Quaternary cold periods in the Northwestern Pacific are thought to have heavily influenced the amount and distribution of intraspecific genetic variation in marine fishes. To estimate the demographic history and genetic structure of Lateolabrax maculatus and L. japonicus in the Northwestern Pacific, 256 individuals were sampled from 19 localities throughout the distribution range of the two species. Mitochondrial DNA variation was analyzed using DNA sequence data from the cytochrome b gene and control region. Nucleotide diversity was much higher in L. japonicus (0.030) than in L. maculatus (0.012). The demographic history of the two species was examined using neutrality tests and mismatch distribution analyses and results indicated Pleistocene population expansion in both species. Estimates of population expansion time suggested earlier population expansion in L. japonicus than in L. maculatus. Molecular variance analyses showed differential genetic structuring for these two closely related species. The results indicated that L. japonicus is panmictic throughout its range. In contrast, populations of L. maculatus showed statistically significant levels of genetic structuring. Pattern of isolation by distance was observed in L. maculatus, suggesting that L. maculatus is in genetic equilibrium. In contrast, L. japonicus did not exhibit isolation by distance. 相似文献
