Group living often requires maintaining dynamic and varied relationships with fellow group members, while simultaneously monitoring and interacting with external competitors. Group members in many social species vocalize together to produce duets or choruses—coordinated, often conspicuous vocal displays—that may play a role in these interactions. Compared with male–female duets, however, relatively little research exists on the function and adaptive significance of group choruses, which involve three or more individuals. Here we investigate chorusing behavior in the greater ani (Crotophaga major), a communally breeding cuckoo that nests in stable social groups of four to eight unrelated individuals. Groups may remain together for several years on the same nesting territory, and groups occasionally destroy each other's clutches in conflicts over high-quality territories. We asked whether the raucous, highly stereotyped choruses performed by ani groups are primarily used for intra- or intergroup communication, and whether they contain information about the identity of the social group and the number of birds vocalizing. Behavioral observations and acoustic recordings from three breeding seasons revealed that choruses typically occurred during social interactions within the group (78% of choruses) or in response to a predator or extra-group individual (17%) and only rarely in intergroup interactions (4%). Consistent with this finding, choruses did not reliably reflect the number of birds vocalizing, and we found only limited evidence for group-specific acoustic signatures (driven by a single group whose choruses were highly distinct). These results suggest that group choruses play an important role in intra-group signaling, potentially in contexts such as group formation, reinforcement of social bonds within the group, and/or collective decision-making, and they motivate new research questions about the role of collective signaling in social evolution.  相似文献

Chemical measures for the biomass, community structure, nutritional status, and metabolic activities of microbes in biofilms attached to detrital or sediment surfaces based on analysis of components of cells and extracellular polymers represent a quantitative and sensitive method for the analysis of predation. These methods require neither the quantitative removal of the organisms from the surfaces nor the efficient culture of each group of microbes for analysis of predation effects on the biofilm. The biomass of microbes can be determined by measuring the content of cellular components found universally in relatively constant amounts. If these components have a high natural turnover or are rapidly lost from viable cells, they can be utilized to measure the viable cell mass. The membrane phospholipids have a naturally high turnover, are found in all cellular membranes, are rapidly hydrolyzed on cell death, and are found in reasonably constant amounts in bacterial cells as they occur in nature. Estimates of the viable biomass by phospholipid content correspond to estimates from the content of muramic acid, ATP, several enzyme activities, direct cell counts, and in some cases viable counts of subsurface sediments. The analysis of the ester-linked fatty acids of the phospholipids (PLFA) using capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) provides sufficient information for the detection of specific subsets of the microbiota based on patterns of PLFA. With this technique shifts in community structure can be quantitatively assayed. Some of the microbiota form specific components such as poly beta-hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) under conditions of unbalanced growth. Others form polysaccharide glycocalyx when subjected to mechanical or chemical stress. The combination of analysis of phospholipids, PLFA, PHA, and glycocalyx provides a definition of the biomass, community structure, and metabolic status of complex microbial communities. These methods involve chromatographic separation and analysis so rates of incorporation or turnover into specific components can be utilized as measures of metabolic activities. With these methods it has proved possible to show that amphipod grazing can induce shifts in biofilm community structure, nutritional status, and metabolic activities. With this technology it proved possible to show resource partitioning amongst sympatric detrital feeding amphipods, prey specificity of feeding of benthic microvores, effects of sedimentary microtopology on predation, and shifts in the microbiota by exclusion of top epibenthic predators.  相似文献

It is well known that both British and American Pekin ducks originated from China. However, the populations differ substantially in production performance, but the genetic changes involved are still poorly understood. Herein, we sequenced 24 individual Pekin ducks (eight from each population) with an average sequencing depth of more than 45× for each population (mean coverage of 6.29 per individual). Among these populations from three different countries, we identified a large number of SNPs and indels as well as many unique population variants, which can be used as population‐specific molecular markers. Genomic comparisons among the three duck populations revealed many candidate genes as well as pathways and Gene Ontology categories that are putatively associated with meat yield in the British population, growth in the American population and brain development in all three populations. These findings will enable a better understanding of the artificial selection history of Pekin ducks and provide a valuable resource for future research on the breeding of this species.  相似文献

Genetic markers provide potentially sensitive indicators of changes in environmental conditions because the genetic constitution of populations is normally altered well before populations become extinct. Genetic indicators in populations include overall genetic diversity, genetic changes in traits measured at the phenotypic level, and evolution at specific loci under selection. While overall genetic diversity has rarely been successfully related to environmental conditions, genetically based changes in traits have now been linked to the presence of toxins and both local and global temperature shifts. Candidate loci for monitoring stressors are emerging from information on how specific genes influence traits, and from screens of random loci across environmental gradients. Drosophila research suggests that chromosomal regions under recent intense selection can be identified from patterns of molecular variation and a high frequency of transposable element insertions. Allele frequency changes at candidate loci have been linked to pesticides, pollutants and climate change. Nevertheless, there are challenges in interpreting allele frequencies in populations, particularly when a large number of loci control a trait and when interactions between alleles influence trait expression. To meet these challenges, population samples should be collected for longitudinal studies, and experimental programmes should be undertaken to link variation at candidate genes to ecological processes.  相似文献

Bat echolocation is primarily used for orientation and foraging but also holds great potential for social communication. The communicative function of echolocation calls is still largely unstudied, especially in the wild. Eavesdropping on vocal signatures encoding social information in echolocation calls has not, to our knowledge, been studied in free-living bats so far. We analysed echolocation calls of the polygynous bat Saccopteryx bilineata and found pronounced vocal signatures encoding sex and individual identity. We showed experimentally that free-living males discriminate approaching male and female conspecifics solely based on their echolocation calls. Males always produced aggressive vocalizations when hearing male echolocation calls and courtship vocalizations when hearing female echolocation calls; hence, they responded with complex social vocalizations in the appropriate social context. Our study demonstrates that social information encoded in bat echolocation calls plays a crucial and hitherto underestimated role for eavesdropping conspecifics and thus facilitates social communication in a highly mobile nocturnal mammal.  相似文献

We studied duet song and vocal duetting behavior in an endemic Taiwanese passerine, Steeres liocichla (Liocichla steerii). We found that the leading male song in duets was highly individualistic. Also, we found duetting behavior varied significantly across different habitat types. Females were more likely to answer male songs in densely vegetated, steep forest habitat compared to open agricultural habitat. These findings provide quantitative evidence for vocal individuality for a duet song and provide tentative support for the idea that females are duetting to reveal their location to their mates.  相似文献

Acoustic-based monitoring has proved useful for many birds and seems promising for the endangered red-crowned crane. However, its validity in crane conservation is unclear in the absence of knowledge concerning the long-term stability of pair-specific duets. The red-crowned crane is monogamous and long-lived, with stable pair bonding both within and between years. Pair mates perform loud duets—a succession of male and female calls emitted with definite temporal coordination. We examined the stability of duets for five captive pairs over five years (2003–2007) on the basis of analysis of the syllables within the duets. MANOVA showed that the effect of pair identity on syllable characteristics was always stronger than the effect of the year of recording. Cross-validation of duets from 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 with discriminant analysis (DFA) functions derived, respectively, from pooled samples from 2003, 2003–2004, 2003–2005, and 2003–2006 resulted in comparably high percentages of correct classification into pairs. The pairs could be reliably identified by their duets and pair-specific differences in syllable characteristics were stable with time. These data suggest acoustic monitoring is a feasible alternative to more invasive methods of identification.  相似文献

I describe in detail the intimately connected feature extraction and classifier development stages of the data-driven Statistical Classification Strategy (SCS) and compare them with current practice used in MR spectroscopy. We initially created the SCS for the analysis of MR and IR spectra of biofluids and tissues, and subsequently extended it to analyze biomedical data in general. I focus on explaining how to extract discriminatory spectral features and create robust classifiers that can reliably discriminate diseases and disease states. I discuss our approach to identifying features that retain spectral identity and provisionally relate these features, averaged subregions of the spectra, to specific chemical entities (“metabolites”). Particular emphasis is placed on describing the steps required to help create classifiers whose accuracy doesn’t deteriorate significantly when presented with new, unknown samples. A simple but powerful extension of the discovered features to detect metabolite-metabolite (feature-feature) interactions is also sketched. I contrast the advantages and disadvantages of using either spectral signatures or explicit metabolite concentrations derived from the spectra as sets of discriminatory features. At present, no clear-cut preference is obvious and more objective comparisons will be needed. Finally, I argue that clinical requirements and exigencies strongly suggest adopting a two-phase approach to diagnosis/prognosis. In the first phase the emphasis ought to be on providing as accurate a diagnosis as possible, without any attempt to identify “biomarkers.” That should be the goal of the second, research phase, with a view of providing prognosis on disease progression.  相似文献

Attractiveness judgments are thought to underpin adaptive mate choice decisions. We investigated how these judgments change during adolescence when mate choice is becoming relevant. Adolescents aged 11–15 evaluated faces and voices manipulated along dimensions that affect adults' judgments of attractiveness and that are thought to cue mate value. Facial stimuli consisted of pairs of faces that were more or less average, more or less feminine, or more or less symmetric. The adolescents selected the more average, symmetric, and feminine faces as more attractive more often than chance, but judgments of some facial traits differed significantly with rater age and sex, indicating a role of development in judgments of facial cues. Vocal stimuli consisted of pairs of voices manipulated to raise or lower perceived pitch. The older but not younger girls selected the lower-pitched male voices as more attractive at rates above chance, while the younger but not older boys selected the higher-pitched female voices as more attractive. Controlling for rater age, increased pubertal development was associated with increased selection of lower-pitched boys' voices by girls and decreased selection of feminized male faces by boys. Our results are the first to demonstrate that adolescents show somewhat similar attractiveness judgments to adults in age-matched stimuli and that age, sex, and pubertal development have measurable effects on adolescents' attractiveness judgments. They suggest that attractiveness judgments in humans, at least for some traits, are facultatively calibrated to the individual's life stage, only reaching adult values upon sexual maturity when mate choice decisions become relevant.  相似文献
