Light microhabitats,growth and photosynthesis of an epiphytic bromeliad in a tropical dry forest 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the tropical dry forest of Dzibilchaltún, Yucatan, Mexico, light microhabitats, tissue acidity changes, chlorophyll fluorescence and growth were investigated for the epiphytic bromeliad Tillandsia brachycaulos Schltdl. Most individuals occurred in sites between 20 and 60% of the height of the tree, and directly on the main trunk or branches closed to the main trunk. During the dry season, individuals received about nine times more photon flux density (PFD) than during the rainy season. Individuals that occurred under 30–59% of the daily ambient PFD showed greater leaf length increase and monthly leaf production, and produced more flowers than individuals in the brighter (>60% of ambient PFD) and the darker (11–29% of ambient PFD) light microhabitats. Well-watered plants acclimated to deep shade (6% of ambient PFD) showed values of tissue acidity similar to plants under higher light treatments. Well-watered plants under 60% of daily ambient PFD showed low values of maximum quantum efficiency at midday during most of the year but showed similar values of tissue acidity than plants under 6 and 30% of ambient PFD. Leaf temperatures of plants in low sites within the canopy and on the forest floor were significantly higher than the air during about 1 h, indicating that those plants could not dissipate the excess of heat. Individuals located in the most shaded microhabitats could also receive less amount of water from rainfall and dew. Therefore, it would be less damaging for this epiphytic bromeliad to occur in the most exposed microhabitats than in the most shaded microhabitats in this tropical dry forest. 相似文献

The Bacillus cereus group comprises a range of micro-organisms with diverse habits, including gut commensals, opportunistic pathogens and soil saprophytes. Using quantitative microbiological methods we tested whether Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) could reproduce in cadavers of Plutella xylostella killed by Bt, or in the gut of live insects, or be transmitted vertically from females to their offspring. We also tested whether diverse Bt strains could grow in high nutrient broth at a pH similar to that in the larval midgut. Low levels of reproduction were found in insect cadavers but there was no evidence of vertical transmission, or of significant reproduction in live insects. Four strains of B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki and one of B. thuringiensis var. tenebrionis were found to be capable of growth at high pH. Greater spore recovery rates in frass were found in hosts that were resistant or tolerant of infection. We concluded that that spores recovered in frass represent, in general, an ungerminated fraction of ingested inoculum and that germination rates are reduced in unsuitable hosts. 相似文献

珠穆朗玛峰国家级自然保护区保护着以世界最高峰为代表的极高山生态系统,在生态和生物的演化及保护中具有重要地位。受交通、自然环境等条件限制,外界对其哺乳动物区系的了解尚不完整。我们于2010 年9月至2012 年10 月在保护区的调查点内利用样带法、访问调查法、自动感应照相系统监测法和夹日法进行了5 次哺乳动物区系调察,共确认10 目23 科81 种。国家重点保护物种有34 种,占总数的42.0% ;地域特征明显,高地型17 种和喜马拉雅-横断山区型14 种,共占38. 3%。区内可以划分为6 个自然带,哺乳动物物种丰富度表现为随海拔先升高后降低,并以2 500 -3 300 m 的物种数最多,共48 种。区系组成南、北翼差异显著,南翼的76 种哺乳动物中,东洋界41 种,古北界25 种;而北翼的29 种中,东洋界仅2 种,古北界23 种。南翼3 300 m以下东洋界优势明显,而4 000 m 以上古北界则占绝对优势,据此我们认为保护区位于东洋界和古北界分界线上,且分界线在3 300 -4 000 m 之间为宜。 相似文献

Consideration of vertical transmission is particularly important for understanding the life cycles of entomopathogens that are naturally occurring in invertebrate populations, are a problem in beneficial insect colonies, or are under consideration as classical biological control agents. Empirical studies generally corroborate the evolutionary hypothesis that virulence should be relatively low for pathogen species that utilize vertical transmission as one mechanism for maintenance in the host population. Nevertheless, many entomopathogens with significant effects on host populations are vertically as well as horizontally transmitted. In addition to gaining a better understanding of pathogen-host interactions and population dynamics, studies of the host range and specificity of putative biological control agents can benefit by using transmission studies to better predict ecological host specificity from physiological data. Horizontal transmission requires a tightly organized host-pathogen relationship to succeed, but still involves, albeit restricted by host behavior and pathogen dosage, the physiological susceptibility of the nontarget host. Vertical transmission studies can provide increased stringency for determining the ecological host specificity of a species and may be one very accurate predictor of the ability of a pathogen to successfully host-switch when introduced into a na?ve population. 相似文献

Seasonal and vertical distribution of tintinnids, non-loricate ciliates and micrometazoa were studied in Kaštela Bay (central
Adriatic Sea) throughout 1995. The species composition of tintinnids and copepods were studied as well. This is the first
estimation of non-loricate ciliate biomass in the coastal area of the central Adriatic. Non-loricate ciliates were quantitatively
the best represented ciliated protozoa, whereas nauplii were the most numerous micrometazoan organisms. Temperature affected
the distribution of most micrometazoan components of the zooplankton and that of non-loricate ciliates. The temperature-dependent
presence of individual size categories of non-loricate ciliates was also established. Apart from the interaction between microzooplankton
groups, the influence of biotic factors, such as phytoplankton, bacteria, non-pigmented nanoflagellates (NNF) and mesozooplankton,
was also discussed. The abundance of ciliates was controlled by both food supply (phytoplankton and NNF) and micrometazoan
grazing. The results point to very complex trophic relationships within the planktonic community, suggesting that microzooplankton
could be an important link between the microbial food web and higher trophic levels.

A mechanistic model of dinoflagellate physiology, previously developed and parameterised to simulate paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) content and cell growth for Alexandrium fundyense in response to N and P nutrition, was operated within a vertical water structure in which the organism migrated. Simulations showed the expected development of vertical migration behaviour in response to light and mineral nutrient interactions. Growth in a N-limited water column resulted in a continual, though low level, PSP production with a large population biomass. A sequence of P-stress and nutrient re-feeding during vertical migration stimulated an enhancement of PSP content even with only moderately elevated supply of N:P ratios. This was exacerbated by low absolute P concentrations below the nutricline as well as by the N:P ratio. Although the final biomass was lower in these P-limited simulations, the total toxin production was much higher. The simulations suggest that vertical migration in stratified waters in even moderately high N:P waters could result in the formation of highly toxic populations of Alexandrium. One may expect a similar enhancement of toxicity in other harmful algal species that are engaged in vertical migration, where nutrient supply ratios affect toxin production. 相似文献

Temporal and spatial heterogeneity of resources is likely to have dramatic effects on the behaviors of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton, which in turn are likely to have strong effects on ecological dynamics such as predation, growth, and mating. The objective of this study was to determine whether vertically thin layers of extreme prey concentration affect the vertical distribution of larval Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi). We employed 2-m tall experimental tanks equipped with video cameras that scanned the vertical extent of the tanks to investigate the effects of thin layers on the vertical distribution of 5- and 10-day-old herring larvae. Three treatments were established: (1) a thin layer of prey (rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis) through density (salinity) stratification, (2) homogeneous vertical distribution of both prey and density, and (3) density (salinity) stratification, but with a homogeneous distribution of prey. We found that in all treatments the majority of larval herring were at the surface, near the light, despite the absence of a peak in rotifer abundance at this depth in some instances. However, there were also clear effects of the thin layers—secondary subsurface peaks in herring abundance occurred at the mid-depths in the stratified tanks, in and around the thin layers. In addition, our results provide some evidence that thin layers specifically, rather than prey patches generally, influence the vertical distribution of larval herring, i.e., larvae may use the physical properties of thin layers to locate and distribute themselves, instead of reacting solely to the prey patches. Thus thin layers can affect directly the vertical distribution of larval herring, and perhaps indirectly their horizontal distribution, as herring larvae live in environments (e.g., estuaries) where advective transport is also often vertically heterogeneous. 相似文献
