The aim of the study was to compare transrectal ultrasound with progesterone (P4) and pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) as pregnancy detection methods for semidomesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in field conditions. Female reindeer (n = 195) were scanned transrectally by a 7.5-MHz linear array transducer, and blood was sampled either in December 2005 (n = 33), December 2006 (n = 92), or January 2007 (n = 70) during early or mid gestation. Plasma levels of P4 and PAGs were assessed by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Based on calving records, the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and the overall accuracy of the three tests were calculated. The overall calving rate calculated from the calving records was 86.2%. The overall accuracy of transrectal ultrasound was 99.5%. The sensitivity and specificity of transrectal ultrasound were 99.4% and 100%, respectively. In the plasma P4 test, the threshold level of 5.0 nmol/L gave the highest overall accuracy (94.9%). The sensitivity of the P4 test decreased from 96.4% to 81.5%, when the threshold level increased from 5.0 nmol/L to 8.0 nmol/L, while the specificity remained at 85.2% over the range of these cutoff values. The overall accuracy of the plasma PAG test decreased from 96.4% to 64.1% when the plasma PAG threshold level increased from 0.5 ng/mL to 3.5 ng/mL, whereas sensitivity decreased from 99.4% to 58.3%. Specificity increased from 77.8% to 100% when the plasma PAG threshold level reached 3.0 ng/mL. Transrectal ultrasound showed higher diagnostic values than those of plasma P4-RIA and PAG-RIA in diagnosing pregnancy of reindeer, with the advantage that diagnoses can be made in real time in field conditions. 相似文献

Witches’ broom is the most devastating disease of cacao in Brazil, and losses to it entail serious socio-economical and environmental problems. Biological control of the causal agent Moniliophthora perniciosa (Mp) using the antagonistic fungus Trichoderma stromaticum (Ts) is promising, although the identification of superior isolates is necessary. Here, we report a study on the selection of more effective Ts isolates based on field experiments. Sixty-three Ts isolates from a local collection were applied on brooms and placed under typical conditions of shaded-cacao plantations in southeastern Bahia State (Brazil), during two periods of three months each. The percentages of Ts sporulation and incidence and severity of Mp were the parameters used for biocontrol assessments. The results from both experiments were very distinct, indicating a high phenotypic variation in this collection and suggesting a significant effect of the environment in the Ts–Mp interaction. Ts-sporulation rates were negatively correlated with the presence of Mp in the brooms and a number of isolates reduced Mp incidence more efficiently than the reference isolate. Contrasting isolates in their efficiency of reducing Mp incidence were selected and further tested in four subsequent field trials for validation purposes. The results partially confirmed their biocontrol phenotypes but also suggested isolate-specific responses to environmental variations. Inhibition of Mp-basidiospore germination by total protein secreted in culture supernatants of Ts isolates correlated well with field results and revealed a potentially useful procedure for pre-screening of large collections towards selection of better biological control isolates. The characteristics and efficiency of the method as a reliable protocol for identification of superior BCAs in the witches’ broom—cacao pathosystem is discussed. 相似文献

A fly or bee's responses to widefield image motion depend on two basic parameters: temporal frequency and angular speed. Rotational optic flow is monitored using temporal frequency analysers, whereas translational optic flow seems to be monitored in terms of angular speed. Here we present a possible model of an angular speed detector which processes input signals through two parallel channels. The output of the detector is taken as the ratio of the two channels’ outputs. This operation amplifies angular speed sensitivity and depresses temporal frequency tuning. We analyse the behaviour of two versions of this model with different filtering properties in response to a variety of input signals. We then embody the detector in a simulated agent's visual system and explore its behaviour in experiments on speed control and odometry. The latter leads us to suggest a new algorithm for optic flow driven odometry. 相似文献

New habitat-based models for spread of hantavirus are developed which account for interspecies interaction. Existing habitat-based models do not consider interspecies pathogen transmission, a primary route for emergence of new infectious diseases and reservoirs in wildlife and man. The modeling of interspecies transmission has the potential to provide more accurate predictions of disease persistence and emergence dynamics. The new models are motivated by our recent work on hantavirus in rodent communities in Paraguay. Our Paraguayan data illustrate the spatial and temporal overlaps among rodent species, one of which is the reservoir species for Jabora virus and others which are spillover species. Disease transmission occurs when their habitats overlap. Two mathematical models, a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) model, are developed for spread of hantavirus between a reservoir and a spillover species. Analysis of a special case of the ODE model provides an explicit expression for the basic reproduction number, , such that if , then the pathogen does not persist in either population but if , pathogen outbreaks or persistence may occur. Numerical simulations of the CTMC model display sporadic disease incidence, a new behavior of our habitat-based model, not present in other models, but which is a prominent feature of the seroprevalence data from Paraguay. Environmental changes that result in greater habitat overlap result in more encounters among various species that may lead to pathogen outbreaks and pathogen establishment in a new host. 相似文献

Viruses have been implicated in the initiation, progression, and exacerbation of several human autoimmune diseases. Evidence also exists that viruses can protect against autoimmune disease. Several proposed mechanisms explain the viral effects. One mechanism is “molecular mimicry” which represents a shared immunologic epitope with a microbe and the host. We consider, using a simple mathematical model, whether and how a viral infection with molecular mimicry can be beneficial or detrimental for autoimmune disease. Furthermore, we consider the possibility of development of a vector therapeutic vaccine that can relieve autoimmune disease symptoms. Our findings demonstrate that vaccine therapy success necessitates (i) appropriate immune response function, (ii) appropriate affinities with self and non-self antigen, and (iii) a replicative vector vaccine. For the first time, we measured the home range size and activity pattern of a White-tailed Sea Eagle (WTSE) by GPS telemetry.
Positions were recorded three times a day and the activity pattern were continuously recorded by two acceleration sensors.
From July to January, we obtained 475 positions and calculated a 95% kernel home range of 4.53 km2 and a 95% minimum convex polygon of 8.22 km2, indicating a rather small area explained by an optimal habitat and by the much more precise location method used here compared
to reports in the literature. Biorhythmic analysis of activity data revealed nearly no night-activity, high day-activity with
no fixed daily pattern and a strong 24-h period of activity. The stability and synchronisation between the eagle's activity
and the environmental 24-h period was evaluated by calculating the degrees of functional coupling (DFC) and the harmonic part
(HP). Mostly, DFC was 100% (meaning that the different physiological and behavioural functions are completely synchronised
to each other and to the environmental 24-h period) and the few incursions of the DFC we assumed to be caused by clinically
relevant lead intoxications. The agonal stage of the WTSE was indicated by a daily decreasing activity level and HPs and highly
modified day–night relationship, and decreasing DFCs at the beginning and at the end of dying process, representing changes
in the activity structure. The underlying reason for the behavioural changes was found to be a lethal lead intoxication due
to an oral ingestion of particles of rifle ammunition. The new technology of a combined GPS receiver and an acceleration sensor
allows the automatic measuring of positions and activity of wild animals at a very precise level over prolonged periods which

Non- H. pylori Helicobacter species (NHPHS) are associated with several important human and animal diseases. In the past year research into this group of bacteria has continued to gain attention, and novel species have been described in new niches owing to improvements in detection methods. Polymerase chain reaction and/or sequencing remain the gold standard for the detection of this genus. New insights into the pathogenesis of the NHPHS in hepatobiliary, gastric, and intestinal diseases were gained. In particular, data revealed interaction between hepatic steatosis and infectious hepatitis in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Evidence of an association between hepatitis C virus and Helicobacter spp. in hepatocarcinoma development was also provided; and male sex hormone signaling appeared to influence infectious hepatitis induced by Helicobacter hepaticus . More findings support an association between Helicobacter heilmannii and gastric adenocarcinoma; and in mice, mucins MUC4 and MUC5 but not MUC1 influence the colonization and pathogenesis of Helicobacter felis . Data indicated that the roles of the adaptive immune system in H. hepaticus -induced intestinal tumorigenesis are different in the small and large intestines, and environmental factors, such as bile acids may modulate H. hepaticus carcinogenic potential. New reports in the prevention and eradication of NHPHS showed a protective response against Helicobacter suis induced by vaccine administration, and a successful cross-foster rederivation method successfully eradicated Helicobacter spp. from contaminated mice litters. Overall, the studies provided insights into the pathophysiology of Helicobacter species other than Helicobacter pylori. 相似文献
