European legislation states that after stunning regular checks should be performed to guarantee animals are unconscious between the end of the stunning process and death. When animals are killed without prior stunning these checks should be performed before the animal is released from restraint. The validity of certain indicators used to assess unconsciousness under different stunning and slaughter conditions is under debate. The aim of this study was to validate the absence of threat-, withdrawal-, corneal- and eyelid reflex as indicators to assess unconsciousness in calves subjected to different stunning and slaughter methods. Calves (201±22 kg) were randomly assigned to one of the following four treatments: (1) Captive bolt stunning followed by neck cut in an inverted position (n=25); (2) Non-stunned slaughter in an upright position (n=7); (3) Non-stunned slaughter in an inverted position (180° rotation) (n=25); (4) Non-stunned slaughter in an upright position followed by captive bolt stunning 40 s after the neck cut (n=25). Each calf was equipped with non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes before the slaughter procedure. All reflexes were verified once before the slaughter procedure. At the beginning of the procedure (T=0 s) calves were stunned (treatment 1) or neck cut in an upright position (treatment 2, 4) or inverted position (treatment 3). Calves of treatment 4 were captive bolt stunned 34±8 s after the neck cut. Reflexes were assessed every 20 s from T=15 s for all treatments until all reflex tests resulted in a negative response three times in a row and a flat line EEG was observed. In addition, reflexes were assessed 5 s after captive bolt stunning in calves of treatments 1 and 4. Visual assessment of changes in the amplitude and frequency of EEG traces was used to determine loss of consciousness. Timing of loss of consciousness was related to timing of loss of reflexes. After captive bolt stunning, absence of threat-, withdrawal-, corneal- and eyelid reflex indicated unconsciousness as determined by EEG recordings. After non-stunned slaughter, both threat- and withdrawal reflex were on average lost before calves were unconscious based on EEG recordings. The eyelid- and corneal reflex were on average lost after calves had lost consciousness based on EEG recordings and appeared to be distinctly conservative indicators of unconsciousness in non-stunned slaughtered calves since they were observed until 76±50 and 85±45 s (mean±SD), respectively, after EEG-based loss of consciousness.  相似文献

In this study, a video-based infrared camera (IRC) was investigated as a tool to monitor the body temperature of calves. Body surface temperatures were measured contactless using videos from an IRC fixed at a certain location in the calf feeder. The body surface temperatures were analysed retrospectively at three larger areas: the head area (in front of the forehead), the body area (behind forehead) and the area of the entire animal. The rectal temperature served as a reference temperature and was measured with a digital thermometer at the corresponding time point. A total of nine calves (Holstein-Friesians, 8 to 35 weeks old) were examined. The average maximum temperatures of the area of the entire animal (mean±SD: 37.66±0.90°C) and the head area (37.64±0.86°C) were always higher than that of the body area (36.75±1.06°C). The temperatures of the head area and of the entire animal were very similar. However, the maximum temperatures as measured using IRC increased with an increase in calf rectal temperature. The maximum temperatures of each video picture for the entire visible body area of the calves appeared to be sufficient to measure the superficial body temperature. The advantage of the video-based IRC over conventional IR single-picture cameras is that more than one picture per animal can be analysed in a short period of time. This technique provides more data for analysis. Thus, this system shows potential as an indicator for continuous temperature measurements in calves.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in efficiency of feed utilisation between buffalo calves with low and high residual feed intake (RFI) by comparing feed intake, nutrient digestibility, growth traits and blood metabolites. Eighteen male Murrah buffalo calves (aged 4–6 months; 70 ± 1.0 kg body weight) were fed ad libitum with a total mixed ration for 120 d. Based on linear regression models involving dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and mid-test metabolic body size, calves were assigned into low and high RFI groups. The RFI varied from ?0.33 to +0.28 kg DM/d with an average RFI of ?0.14 and 0.14 kg DM/d in low and high RFI calves, respectively. Calves had a mean DMI of 1.9 and 2.4 kg/d and an ADG of 0.5 and 0.6 kg/d in low and high RFI groups, respectively. Low RFI calves ate 19.0% less DM each day and required significantly less metabolisable energy for maintenance compared with high RFI calves (12.5 vs. 16.7 MJ/d). Nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance did not differ among low and high RFI calves. In more efficient animals (low RFI calves) higher (p < 0.05) plasma level of growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), triiodothyronine (T3) and lower concentration of thyroxin hormone were detected. No significant differences in levels of insulin, hydroxyproline, plasma and urine creatinine, total protein and albumin between high and low RFI groups were found. Blood metabolites showed significant (< 0.05) differences at initial and final stages of study in both groups. At final stage of study, RFI showed negative correlations with growth hormone, IGF-1, T3, urine creatinine and albumin. Low RFI buffalo calves are more efficient in feed utilisation and the differences in blood metabolites are probably due to differences in feed intake and body metabolism.  相似文献

In two experiments calves raised free of parasite infection were given parenteral injections of Ostertagia ostertagi infective larvae to determine if patent infections might result. Patency was achieved by intravenous injection of larvae. Ten calves of different age (3–8 months) and sex were given intravenous, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal injections of infective larvae. These calves were not necropsied; patency was based on fecal egg counts. Six calves injected intravenously all achieved patency (17–21 days after inoculation). Two calves each were inoculated subcutaneously and intraperitoneally; patency was observed in none. Calves given primary intravenous inoculation responded with higher levels of ova production to subsequent oral challenge inoculation. In a second experiment, six 2–3-month-old calves were injected intravenously with 186,000 infective larvae. Calves were killed at 2, 7, 12, 20 and 30 days after inoculation and had a tissue reaction in the lungs to migrating larvae characterized by focal granulomas, interstitial thickening of alveolar walls, and some hemorrhage. Infective larvae were recovered from the lungs at 2, 7 and 12 days, fourth stage larvae from the abomasum at 7 and 12 days, and adults only from the abomasum at 20 and 30 days. It was considered that larvae reached the abomasum by way of the trachea and by then being swallowed. Clinical signs of disease were not observed.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The development of Sarcocystis cruzi Hasselmann (syn. S. fusiformis Railliet) meronts was studied in seven 7- to 10-day-old calves killed 4, 7, 11, 15, 22, 25 and 28 days postinoculation (DPI) with 5 × 107 sporocysts from feces of coyotes. No meronts were found 4 and 7 DPI. Young and intermediate meronts with 1–16 nuclei were found in endothelial cells of arteries in mesenteric lymph nodes, but not in kidneys 11 DPI. Mature meronts were noted in endothelial cells of arteries, arterioles, or capillaries of many organs of calves killed 15 to 25 DPI. No first-generation meronts were found 28 DPI. By electron microscopy, all stages of the first-generation merogony were found free within the host cell cytoplasm and not within a parasitophorous vacuole. The appearance of intranuclear spindles preceded the formation of merozoites by endopolygeny. Mature meronts measured 41.0 × 17.5 (34–50 × 15–24) μm, contained ~ 100–350 merozoites, and had 2 to 4 relatively small residual bodies, 2.8 μm in diameter. Merozoites measured 6.3 × 1.5 (5.5–7 × 1 μm) and contained most of the organelles characteristically found in coccidian merozoites. Micropores were observed in merozoites, but not in young and intermediate meronts. Merozoites were seen free in the lumen of blood vessels, in intracellular areas, and free within the host cell cytoplasm.  相似文献

The aim was to evaluate the performance, economics of production and physiological status of native Baladi and crossbred (50% Brown Swiss:50% native Baladi) calves under hot summer climate in Egypt (twenty-eight growing calves; 14 calve from each genetic type). The crossbred calves showed a significantly higher daily feed intake and body gain (p = 0.015 and 0.001 respectively), as well as a better feed conversion ratio (p = 0.019) compared with native Baladi calves. Although no significant differences were reported In the variable and total costs, the crossbred calves showed significantly greater total returns, net profit and Profit/Cost ratio when compared with native calves (p = 0.014, 0.001 and 0.022, respectively). The native Baladi calves had significantly higher serum glucose level compared with crossbred calves (p = 0.031). However, the crossbred calves showed a significantly higher serum Triiodothyronine (T3) level when compared with native calves (p = 0.016). Under a hot summer climate, no significant variations were reported in the rectal temperature, respiration rate, and daily water intake, as well as in the serum cortisol (p = 0.114) and thyroxin (p = 0.197) levels between native and crossbred calves. In conclusion, the crossbred calves exhibit a better growth performance, economic efficiency and stable physiological responses compared with the native calves under hot environment in the summer season.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We evaluated survival of elk (Cervus elaphus) calves on 2 contrasting study areas in north-central Idaho, USA, from 1997 to 2004. Recruitment was modest (>30 calves:100 F [calves of either sex: F elk 1 yr old]) and stable on the South Fork study area and low (<20 calves:100 F) and declining on the Lochsa study area. The primary proximate cause of calf mortality on both study areas was predation by black bears (Ursus americanus) and mountain lions (Puma concolor). We experimentally manipulated populations of black bears and mountain lions on a portion of each study area. Black bear harvest (harvest density/600km2) initially doubled on the Lochsa treatment after manipulating season bag limits. Mountain lion harvest also increased by 60% but varied widely during the manipulation period. Harvest seasons were closed for black bears and mountain lions on the treatment portion of the South Fork study area. Using the Andersen—Gill formulation (A-G) of the Cox proportional hazards model, we examined effects of landscape structure, predator harvest levels, and biological factors on summer calf survival. We used Akaike's Information Criterion (AICc) and multimodel inference to assess some potentially useful predictive factors relative to calf survival. We generated risk ratios for both the best models and for model-averaged coefficients. Our models predicted that calf survival was influenced by biological factors, landscape surrounding calf locations, and predator harvest levels. The model that best explained mortality risk to calves on the Lochsa included black bear harvest (harvest density/600 km2), estimated birth mass of calves, and percentage of shrub cover surrounding calf locations. Incorporating a shrub X time interaction allowed us to correct for nonproportionality and detect that effect of shrub cover was only influential during the first 14 days of a calf's life. Model-averaging indicated that estimated birth mass of calves and black bear harvest were twice as important as the next variables, but age of calves at capture was also influential in calf survival. The model that best explained mortality risk to calves on the South Fork included black bear harvest, age of calves at capture, and gender of calves. Model-averaging indicated that age at capture and black bear harvest were twice as important as the next variable, forest with 33–66% canopy cover (Canopy 33–66). Risk to calves decreased when calves occupied areas with more of this forest cover type. Model-averaging also indicated that increased mountain lion harvest lowered calf mortality risk 4% for every 1-unit increase in lion harvest (harvest density/600 km2) but was lower (<25%) in importance compared to age at capture and black bear harvest. Our results suggest that levels of predator harvest, and presumably predator density, resource limitations expressed through calf birth mass, and habitat structure had substantial effects on calf survival. Our results can be generalized to other areas where managers are dealing with low calf elk recruitment. However, because factors vary spatially, a single management strategy applied in different areas will probably not have the same effect on calf survival.  相似文献

The pathology of severe Babesia argentina infections in splenectomized calves was studied. The calves were infected by intravenous inoculation of 109–1010B. argentina and given 0.1 mg/kg betamethasone to enhance the parasitemia. Hematological changes observed during detailed studies of the course of infection in eight calves, three of which subsequently died, included thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, and reduced fibrinogen levels. The prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time were prolonged in all three calves tested, and pathological levels of fibrinogen degradation products were detected in both of two calves tested. Massive pulmonary edema was a constant finding at autopsy of 24 fatal cases. Histopathological examination revealed widespread fibrin thrombi in capillaries and larger vessels of lung, in capillaries of renal glomeruli, and in hepatic sinusoids. The findings established the occurrence of disseminated intravascular coagulation in the acute infections studied.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella isolated from a central Texas dairy calf farm that raises animals for dairy-beef production. METHODS AND RESULTS: Salmonella isolates collected from 50 faecal samples were characterized for susceptibility to 20 antimicrobial agents. Seventy per cent of the faecal samples (35 of 50) tested positive for Salmonella, and high rates of resistance to the following drugs that are commonly used for treatment of bacterial enteritis in livestock were observed: ampicillin (88%), apramycin (83%), neomycin (86%), spectinomycin (91%) and oxytetracycline (90%). No resistance to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics was observed. The most prevalent Salmonella serotype was Kinshasha (22 of 35 samples), followed by Agona (4 of 35), Newport (3 of 35), Infantis (2 of 35), Montevideo (2 of 35), Lille (1 of 35) and Newington (1 of 35). The Kinshasa, Agona, Newport and Infantis serotypes all displayed resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulphamethoxazole and tetracycline, and the penta-resistance phenotype was transferable to an Escherichia coli recipient strain. SIGNIFICANCE: Multi-drug resistant Salmonella in dairy calves pose a costly animal health problem and a potential risk to the public health. This study emphasizes the need for alternative, non-antimicrobial intervention strategies for the control of zoonotic pathogens.  相似文献

Sweating rate, rectal and skin temperatures and respiration rate were measured at weekly intervals from 7 days of age (for 4 weeks in Experiment 1; 6 weeks in Experiment 2) in winter- and summer-born Friesian calves exposed to a temperature of 39°C dry bulb and 32°C wet bulb in a climate chamber. Four calves were studied in each season in both experiments. In Experiment 1, ambient temperatures were from 3° to 9°C higher in early summer than in late winter. During each 39°C exposure, sweating rate increased from basal levels of 40–90 to plateau levels of 120–300 g/m2 per h after 90–120 min. The increase in sweating rate with age was most pronounced in winter-born calves, but summer-born calves had higher values at 1 week of age (167±52.4 vs 94.4±30.1 g/m2 per h). Seasonal differences in ambient temperature were greater in Experiment 2 (11° to 17°C). In this case summer-born calves had higher sweating rates at each age (plateau values of 220–320 g/m2 per h), and showed a more rapid increase in sweating rate during each 39°C exposure than winter-born calves (plateau values of 100–250 g/m2 per h). The results demonstrate major changes in sweating competence during the first 4–6 weeks of life in Friesian calves, a quite pronounced effect of season (ambient temperature) on the levels of sweating achieved, and indicate that low sweating rates in newborn calves are a contributing factor in deaths due to hyperthermia in semi-arid grazing areas.  相似文献
