The objective of this study was to assess urinary excretion of zinc and evaluation parameters of metabolic control in type
2 diabetic patients. Thirty-one type 2 diabetic patients, of both genders, with 5.8 ± 5.6 years average time of the disease,
age range 20–60 years, were selected. Evaluation of the nutritional status was performed using anthropometric measurements.
To evaluate food consumption, the 3-day alimentary log method was used, and its analysis was performed using a software. Determination
of urinary zinc was by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. From the obtained results, it was concluded that 51.6% of the
patients were overweight. The mean of found waist circumference was 100.4 and 92.2 cm for men and women, respectively. Blood
glucose and glycated hemoglobin values were higher than reference values, and plasma albumin concentration was adequate. The
median of found urinary zinc excretion was 474.9 μg/24 h, within normal standards (300–600 μg/day). Regarding diet composition,
calorie and protein concentration were above recommendation, while mean zinc concentration was adequate. This data allow the
conclusion that the evaluated patients presented adequate urinary zinc excretion in comparison with reference values. 相似文献

Abstract: Scent-matching dogs have previously been used to identify caged individual Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) by fecal material (scat), but this technique has not been tested in the wild. We tested the hypothesis that trained dogs can identify individual tigers by unique characteristics present in scat. To conduct this work, we used 5 dogs and 58 scats from 25 known individual tigers in independent trials. Dogs correctly selected matched test scats at an average rate of 87% (SE ± 1.4%, n = 521 trials). The average accuracy rates for 4 dogs increased to 98% (SE ± 1.6%, n = 86 sets of repeated-trials) using repeated-trial tests. Each of 5 dogs made correct choices better than expected by chance (dog 1 χ21 = 507.9, P ≤ 0.001; dog 2 χ21 = 882.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 3 χ21 = 374.1, P ≤ 0.001; dog 4 χ21 = 379.2, P ≤ 0.001; and dog 5 χ21 = 103.9, P ≤ 0.001). Four dogs were able to match 11 scats deposited over a 4-year period from one tiger with an accuracy of 100% (n = 40 trails). This method may be a useful alternative to genetic analyses that are used in conjunction with scat-sampling schemes in studies for which DNA genotyping is impractical or ineffective. Used with mark—recapture surveys to estimate species abundance, scent-matching dogs have the potential of being important tools in the study of wild Amur tigers, as well as other wildlife species. 相似文献

Rats trained to detect propyl acetate and valeric acid and to discriminate between propyl acetate and amyl acetate and between valeric acid and butyric acid were injected with a low dose of 3-methyl indole, a treatment that produces well-defined and selective deafferentation of the olfactory bulbs. Treatment completely deafferented most but not all bulbar loci for aliphatic acids and at least disrupted those for propyl and amyl acetate. In posttreatment tests, experimental rats performed somewhat but not significantly more poorly than controls and about as well on the acid detection and discrimination tasks as on the corresponding acetate tests. 相似文献

Associations between certain odors and for instance health effects may lead to positive or negative attitudes toward these odors. However, in experiments we conducted using the Implicit Association Test (IAT), we encountered attitudes even to odor "words." The IAT is based on the principle that reaction times measuring the association between words from a target dimension (in this case, odor vs. a neutral reference category) and an attribute dimension (i.e., positive or negative words) reflect the attitude to the target, where attitude-congruent associations between target and attribute are reflected by shorter reaction times. In a first experiment, we found distinctly positive attitudes to the concept odor in a student sample, which was replicated in a second experiment. In the main experiment, subjects in the aromatherapy group, who prefer using scented consumer products for relaxation purposes, showed a significantly more positive attitude toward odor words in the IAT than a control group, who did not have such a preference. The fact that results from the implicit test were not always associated with explicitly stated attitudes toward the odor words attests to the fact that the IAT measures the attitude of interest in a different way. As such, the IAT has added value in circumstances where explicit tests can be biased. 相似文献

Behavioral endocrinologists are aware that many hormones exhibit a diurnal rhythm, and attempt to correct for this pattern by collecting physiological samples only during specified time windows of varying lengths. In studies utilizing urinary measures of hormone levels, this window often spans 2 h or longer. In this study, we compared chimpanzee urinary cortisol levels in sample pairs collected within 1 h of each other in an attempt to validate the use of a time window for sample collection. Chimpanzees were housed at the University of Louisiana New Iberia Research Center and trained to urinate into a paper cup on command; a total of 41 sample pairs were included in this analysis. We found that mean cortisol levels in the two sets of samples, collected within 1 h or less of each other, were significantly different; the mean cortisol level of the first set of samples was significantly higher than that of the second set. This hormone's diurnal pattern of secretion accounts for this significant decrease over a very short time period. We conclude that collection methodologies involving time windows of 1 h or longer need to take into account such rapid changes in levels of excreted hormone. We advocate the use of methodological and statistical corrections to decrease the impact of short-term fluctuations in urinary cortisol. 相似文献

Gonadectomy not only affects hormonal homeostasis but also alters the turnover of different components of the extracellular matrix in urogenital tissues. Collagen is an important component of the bladder and urethral walls and thus crucial for the mechanical properties of normal lower urinary tract (LUT) functions. This study aimed at investigating the possibility of differences in the proportion of collagen and muscle tissues in the LUT of intact and gonadectomised male and female dogs. Twenty clinically healthy dogs were used including 10 sexually intact dogs (5 males, 5 anoestrus females) and 10 gonadectomised dogs (4 males and 6 females). Four regions of the LUT, i.e. body and neck of the bladder as well as proximal and distal urethra were collected. The tissue sections were stained with Masson's Trichrome. Quantitative evaluation of the blue-stained area for collagen and red-counterstained area for muscle was performed using colour image analysis. The relative proportion of collagen and muscle significantly differed with the gonadal status, the gender and the region. Overall, gonadectomised dogs had a higher (P < 0.001) proportion of collagen and consequently a lower (P < 0.001) proportion of muscle than intact dogs. Regardless of gonadal statuses, females had a higher (P < 0.05) proportion of collagen and a lower (P < 0.05) proportion of muscle tissues than males. Gender differences were found in all four regions of the LUT in intact dogs but only in proximal urethra in gonadectomised dogs where spayed females had a higher (P < 0.05) proportion of collagen and less muscle (P < 0.05). Regional differences were observed in females; a higher proportion of collagen and therefore less muscle were found in the urethra compared with the bladder. Proportional differences in collagen and muscle between intact and gonadectomised animals suggest a relation of different hormonal statuses to structural changes in the canine LUT. Excessive collagen deposits and less muscular volume may impair structural and functional integrity of the LUT which may associate with the development of post-neutering urinary incontinence in the dog. 相似文献

It has been reported that the transport function for organic anions on the kidney is maintained in multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (Mrp2)-deficient rats. Different from Mrp2-deficient rats, Long-Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rats have impaired urinary excretion of Mrp2-substrate, phenolsulfonphthalein (PSP). PSP is transported by the potential-sensitive urate transport system in rat brush-border membranes. We analyzed the function of PSP transport system in LEC rats. Unlike Long-Evans Agouti (LEA) rats, the initial uptake of PSP and urate into the renal brush-border membrane vesicles of LEC rats were not significantly enhanced in the presence of positive intravesicular potential, suggesting that the potential-sensitive urate transport system is impaired in LEC rats. LEC rats should be useful for elucidating the potential-sensitive urate transport system in rats at the molecular level. 相似文献

We studied the effect of nestmate separation on trophallaxis in the polydomous ant Cataglyphis iberica. After dividing three colonies into two equivalent subgroups, one queenright and one queenless, we quantified the frequency of trophallaxis within each subgroup, between the workers from the two subgroups (mixed trophallaxis), and trophallaxis involving the queen. Observations of trophallaxis were conducted over four periods of time: for 2 weeks before the separation of the two subgroups, 8 weeks during separation, immediately after reunification, and 3 weeks following reunification. Subgroups were identically fed on the eve of each day of observation. Group separation induced an increase in mixed frequencies of trophallaxis just after reunification, after which trophallaxis returned to the initial level observed before separation. Previous results showed that group separation in C. iberica induces hydrocarbon profile divergence and that reunification restores this chemical modification. The current results seem to indicate that increased trophallaxis permits a uniform odor to be reestablished among previously separated ants. Trophallaxis involving the queen is infrequent and does not seem to be crucial in the process of odor exchange. Our data confirm that trophallaxis plays a key role in establishing the Gestalt colony odor, particularly among naturally separated satellite nests in a polydomous species like C. iberica. 相似文献

The urinary excretion of 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) was used as an index of muscle protein catabolism in primary and secondary infections of the guinea pig with Trichostrongylus colubriformis and in uninfected animals fed quantitatively reduced rations. Catabolism, which was depressed in all three groups, was directly related to a fall in food consumption. Possible explanations for the greater depression of catabolism in the primary infection than in the uninfected guinea pigs and its fall in the secondary infection in spite of little change in consumption are briefly discussed. It was concluded that the faster rate of whole-body protein turnover reported earlier in this series on protein metabolism in intestinal nematode infection was not partly due to a faster rate of muscle protein catabolism. 觅食活动是动物生存和繁殖所必需的基本的活动,受个体生理状态(如饥饿)和环境状况(如捕食、食物可利用性)时空变化的影响,能量状态-风险分配假说指出,动物在应对不同风险时会优化觅食和反捕食努力的时间和能量分配。然而,有关啮齿动物觅食决策的能量状态-捕食风险分配假说的研究结论尚不统一。本研究在野外实验室以艾鼬(Mustela eversmannii)气味作为捕食风险刺激源,以非捕食者(马)气味源作为对照,首先通过Y型观测箱检验雌性饥饿长爪沙鼠(Meriones unguiculatus)对捕食者气味的辨别能力(Wilcoxon 秩检验);在此基础上通过中立场行为观测箱分别测定饥饿雌鼠在“有食物和天敌气味源”与“有食物和非天敌气味源”环境下的觅食活动,采用Mann-Whitney Z检验比较两者间的行为差异,以验证急性捕食风险限制饥饿沙鼠觅食活动的假设,并探讨动物在饥饿风险与捕食风险共存情况下的觅食行为对策。结果显示,(1)长爪沙鼠对天敌气味反应明显,厌恶和回避有较高潜在捕食风险的空间;(2)虽然觅食潜伏期在捕食风险存在时有所增加,但急性捕食风险并未影响饥饿沙鼠的觅食频次,沙鼠通过缩短每次觅食的持续时间来应对捕食风险;与此同时,(3)饥饿沙鼠在急性捕食风险条件下对环境探究的次数明显增加,一定程度上提高反捕食努力,且自我修饰表现显著,以缓释捕食压力的恐惧效应。这些结果表明,急性捕食风险不能完全抑制饥饿沙鼠的觅食努力,在有捕食风险情况下,饥饿的长爪沙鼠会权衡觅食获取能量和避免捕食的收益和代价,优化觅食策略。本研究结果支持能量状态-风险分配假说关于在短期高风险情况下反捕食努力分配更多,但当动物在饥饿风险持续时间比例显著增加时,动物最终也必须在高风险情况下觅食的预测,也反映了长爪沙鼠对食物资源不可预测及捕食风险高的干旱半干旱荒漠环境的行为适应对策。 相似文献
