The fungus, Neozygitis cf. floridana is parasitic on the cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Acari: Tetranychidae) in South America and may be considered for classical biological control of cassava green mites in Africa, where cassava is an important subsistence crop, cassava green mites are an imported pest and specific natural enemies are lacking. Spider mites generally have a viscous structure of local populations, a trait that would normally hamper the spread of a fungus that is transmitted by the contact of susceptible hosts with the halo of capilliconidia surrounding an infectious host. However, if infected mites search and settle to produce capilliconidia on sites where they are surrounded by susceptible mites before becoming infectious, then the conditions for maximal transmission in a viscous host population are met. Because the ratio between spider mites and the leaf area they occupy is constant, parasite-induced host searching behaviour leads to a constant per capita transmission rate. Hence, the transmission rate only depends on the number of infectious hosts. These assumptions on parasite-induced host search and constant host density lead to a simple, analytically tractable model that can be used to estimate the maximal capacity of the fungus to decimate local populations of the cassava green mite. By estimating the parameters of this model (host density, per capita transmission rate and duration of infected and infectious state) it was shown that the fungal pathogen can reduce the population growth of M. tanajoa, but cannot drive local mite populations to extinction. Only when the initial ratio of infectious to susceptible mites exceeds unity or the effective growth rate of the mite population is sufficiently reduced by other factors than the fungus (e.g. lower food quality of the host plant, dislodgement and death by rain and wind and predation), will the fungal pathogen be capable of decimating the cassava green mite population. Under realistic field conditions, where all of these growth-reducing factors are likely to operate, there may well be room for effective control by the parasitic fungus. The compatibility of Orius laevigatus Fieber with Neoseiulus (Amblyseius) cucumeris Oudemans as predators of Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande was assessed in 24 h tests on French bean leaf discs. At varying densities of N. cucumeris and F. occidentalis in the presence of a single female O. laevigatus, it was found that O. laevigatus fed on both other organisms to a similar extent, thus raising questions as to the suitability of this combination of predators in the biocontrol of F. occidentalis. In similar trials assessing the compatibility of O. laevigatus with Iphiseius (Amblyseius) degenerans Berlese, O. laevigatus preyed on F. occidentalis to a greater extent than on I. degenerans. It is hypothesized that O. laevigatus and I. degenerans could be used simultaneously in the biocontrol of F. occidentalis with minimal interference between them.  相似文献

The effect of elimination treatment with benzyl benzoate was examined in 30 adults with asthma caused by sensitivity to house dust mites. The patients were randomised into a control and an active group, who treated their mattresses with benzyl benzoate (Acarosan®). The study lasted 12 months and the effect of the treatment was monitored by monthly dust sampling, analyzed for major allergens fromDermatophagoides pteronyssinus andfarinae by the ELISA method and for guanine by the Acarex® method. The clinical effect was assessed by measuring lung function, daily peak flows, symptoms and medicine consumption as well as skin prick tests, and specific IgE to mite allergens. For both groups, a significant decrease was observed in house dust mite allergens, but there was no significant difference between the groups. No considerable differences were observed in clinical parameters within or between the groups. A good correlation was observed between ELISA and Acarex®. but the latter showed a major variation in the different classes. In conclusion. treatment of mattresses with benzyl benzoate had no effect in a group of patients with asthma due to house dust mite allergy. Regular vacuum cleaning of the bed may reduce house dust mite allergen exposure.  相似文献

Abstract. Insects and mites may measure photoperiods eitfier by classifying them as long or short relative to a critical value (qualitative time measurement) or by using the absolute value (quantitative time measurement). The spider mite Tetranychus urticae is thought to use a qualitative mechanism of time measurement. In this paper we present the results of experiments with an inbred line of the spider mite (to keep genetic variation in photoperiodic responses small), to test whether quantitative aspects also play a role. Differences in diapause incidence in different long-night photoperiods at different temperatures may be an indication of quantitative responses to photoperiod. The effect of temperature on the photoperiodic response curve was studied at 16oC, 19oC and 22oC. The response curves appeared to be similar at 16oC and 19oC, with a critical nightlength between 10 and 11 h. At 22oC, diapause induction was less than 100% in all long-night regimens and die critical nightlength had shifted to 12 h. Maximum diapause induction (93%) occurred in a light-dark cycle with a 16 h dark phase (LD 8:16 h). Diapause induction was lowest in long-night photoperiods with dark phases of 20 h and longer. The number of light-dark cycles needed for 50% diapause induction at 19oC varied. between 12.1 and 14.7 for LD 6:18 h, between 10.9 and 12.5 for LD 8:16 h, between 10.6 and 11.6 for LD 10:14 h, and between 10.1 and 10.7 for LD 12:12 h. Independent of die light-dark regimen, diapause induction took place in some individuals after receiving 8 cycles and virtually all individuals entered diapause after 16 cycles. No effect was found of the photoperiodic treatment during prediapause development (LD 6:18 h, LD 8:16 h, LD 10:14 h, LD 12:12 h) on diapause duration. The average diapause duration at LD 10:14 h and 19oC was 61 days over all four treatments. We explained the results by hypothesising that nightlengths are assessed qualitatively and mat the photoperiodic clock operates more accurately near the critical nightlength.  相似文献

Many ascomycetes are associated with insects to form symbioses. The fungi are necrotrophic and biotrophic parasites, endosymbionts, insect-dispersed forms, and other obligate associates that provide nourishment for insects. Diversity among these fungi can be categorized in several different ways: taxonomic diversity, variety of interaction types occurring within a fungal lineage, and number of fungal species. Previously our inability to produce well supported phylogenetic hypotheses has obscured these views of diversity. Over the past 5 years our knowledge of insect-associated fungi has been improved by the use of DNA sequence analysis. Such studies have revealed that ascomycetes in almost all major clades are associated intimately with insects. Of particular interest has been the sorting out of relationships of taxa with convergent morphologies, unique characters, and lost characters, including those associated with sexual reproduction. Within some fungal groups the types of interactions with insects are diverse, and eventually phylogenetic analysis will help to trace the evolutionary development of symbioses. Molecular studies also contribute to our understanding of the number of species which may vary according to species concepts used in their study.  相似文献

Abstract:  Prey consumption by Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten was studied in the presence and absence of apple powdery mildew, Podosphaera leucotricha (Ell. and Everh.) under constant laboratory conditions. Eggs of Tetranychus urticae Koch were offered to predatory mites as a prey. Seven densities ranging from five to 100 T. urticae eggs per arena were used. Mildew conidia (approximately 0.5 mg) were added to half of the arenas by brushing them from infected apple leaves. A single adult female of T. pyri was introduced onto each arena and number of prey eggs consumed was counted 12 h later when the predator was offered new T. urticae eggs again and the procedure was repeated once. Data showed that predators consumed in both experimental periods nearly all prey in experiments with densities up to 40 eggs per arena and no mildew. However, the number of eggs consumed decreased more than twofold when mildew conidia were supplied, even at high prey densities. Differences in predation rate between treatments with and without mildew were highly significant. The results thus indicate that availability of mildew as an alternative food can reduce prey suppression by T. pyri . Possible implications of these findings in biological control of spider mites by generalist predatory mites are discussed.  相似文献

Host‐associated organisms (e.g., parasites, commensals, and mutualists) may rely on their hosts for only a portion of their life cycle. The life‐history traits and physiology of hosts are well‐known determinants of the biodiversity of their associated organisms. The environmental context may strongly influence this interaction, but the relative roles of host traits and the environment are poorly known for host‐associated communities. We studied the roles of host traits and environmental characteristics affecting ant‐associated mites in semi‐natural constructed grasslands in agricultural landscapes of the Midwest USA. Mites are frequently found in ant nests and also riding on ants in a commensal dispersal relationship known as phoresy. During nonphoretic stages of their development, ant‐associated mites rely on soil or nest resources, which may vary depending on host traits and the environmental context of the colony. We hypothesized that mite diversity is determined by availability of suitable host ant species, soil detrital resources and texture, and habitat disturbance. Results showed that that large‐bodied and widely distributed ant species within grasslands support the most diverse mite assemblages. Mite richness and abundance were predicted by overall ant richness and grassland area, but host traits and environmental predictors varied among ant hosts: mites associated with Aphaenogaster rudis depended on litter depth, while Myrmica americana associates were predicted by host frequency and grassland age. Multivariate ordinations of mite community composition constructed with host ant species as predictors demonstrated host specialization at both the ant species and genus levels, while ordinations with environmental variables showed that ant richness, soil texture, and grassland age also contributed to mite community structure. Our results demonstrate that large‐bodied, locally abundant, and cosmopolitan ant species are especially important regulators of phoretic mite diversity and that their role as hosts is also dependent on the context of the interaction, especially soil resources, texture, site age, and area.  相似文献
