Orius insidiosus is economically important for biological control of pests of vegetable and ornamental crops. To improve pest control with this predator, its densities in the crops can be enhanced by the provision of alternative foods, especially when prey are scarce. We therefore compared the performance of O. insidiosus on three alternative foods (Ricinus sp. pollen, bee pollen and the mixed stages of the astigmatid prey Tyrophagus putrescentiae) that are cheaper than frozen eggs of Ephestia kuehniella. Juvenile development was significantly shorter on E. kuehniella and T. putrescentiae than on Ricinus sp. pollen and on bee pollen and lowest without food. Female bugs had a higher oviposition rate when fed either E. kuehniella or T. putrescentiae, but produced fewer eggs when feeding on bee pollen and Ricinus sp. pollen. This shows that T. putrescentiae can possibly be used as cheap alternative food to boost predator populations in periods of low prey densities.  相似文献

Aim Taxocenes are regulated by different kinds of predictors, but can broad‐scale patterns of prokaryotes (bacteria) and eukaryotes (such as fungi and invertebrates) be ascribed to soil acidity? We sought to test for relationships between the numerical abundances of bacteria, microfungi, nematodes and arthropods along a pH gradient. Location 284 agro‐ecosystems on Pleistocene sand across the Netherlands. Methods Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and stepwise regressions were applied, using soil‐ and leaf‐litter organisms sampled from a land‐cover network. Results The major variation in the numerical abundance of the organisms belonging to the investigated taxocenes could be ascribed to soil acidity. Contrary to expectations, the effects of temperature on numerical abundance were significant only for Fungi and Nematoda (P < 0.0001). Geographical co‐ordinates always play a minor role. The often‐suggested close correlation between the numerical abundance of eukaryotes and their local taxonomic diversity applied only to Arthropoda and Fungi (P < 0.00001). Only the number of bacterial DNA bands seemed to reflect the taxa–area relationship (F‐value = 22.45, P < 0.0001). Main conclusions There were strong relationships between the numerical abundances of all the investigated taxocenes and the field‐measured soil acidity (P < 0.0001). The largest effects were detected in the Fungi, which tended to be much more acid‐tolerant than Bacteria. These patterns imply ecological shifts in the detrital soil food web and deserve further investigation.  相似文献

A survey to determine the geographical distribution and relative abundance of potential vectors of scrub typhus was conducted from October to November 2006 at 13 localities throughout the Republic of Korea. Apodemus agrarius accounted for 97.6% (80/82) of all rodents, while only 2 Myodes regulus (2/82) were collected. A total of 10,860 chiggers were collected from A. agrarius belonging to 4 genera and 8 species, while only Walchia fragilis (40) was collected from Myodes regulus. Leptotrombidium pallidum (8,137; 74.9%), a vector of scrub typhus, was the predominant species collected from A. agrarius followed by Leptotrombidium scutellare (2,057, 18.9%), Leptotrombidium palpale (279; 2.7%), Leptotrombidium orientale (232; 2.1%), and Leptotrombidium zetum (79; 0.7%), Neotrombicula tamiyai (58; 0.5%), Euschoengastica koreaensis (16; 0.1%), and Cheladonta ikaoensis (2; < 0.1%). L. pallidum was the predominant chigger collected at collection sites in Gangwon (100%), Gyeonggi (87.2%), Chungnam (100%), Chungbuk (100%), Jeonbuk (73.9%), Jeonnam (77.0%), and Gyeongbuk (66.1%) provinces, whereas L. scutellare was the predominant chigger collected in Gyeongnam province (77.9%) and Jeju Island (62.3%). Data suggest a correlation between chigger population abundance and human cases of scrub typhus in Korea.  相似文献

The relative importance of the factors driving change in the population dynamics of nematodes in the soil is almost completely unknown. Top-down control by micro-arthropod predators may have a significant impact on nematode population dynamics. We report experiments showing that mites and Collembola were capable of reducing nematode numbers in the laboratory and were feeding on a targeted nematode species in the field. A PCR-based approach was developed for the detection of predation on three species of slug- and insect-pathogenic nematodes: Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, Heterorhabditis megidis and Steinernema feltiae. The collembolan Folsomia candida and the mesostigmatid mite Stratiolaelaps miles were employed as model predators to calibrate post-ingestion prey DNA detection times. Fragments of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) mtDNA were sequenced and species-specific primers were designed, amplifying 154-, 154- and 203-bp fragments for each of the nematode species. Detection times for nematode DNA within the guts of Collembola were longer than in mites, with half-lives (50% of samples testing positive) of 08.75 h and 05.03 h, respectively. F. candida significantly reduced numbers of the nematode H. megidis, with rates of predation of approximately 0.4 nematode infective juveniles per collembolan per hour over 10 h. Four taxa of field-caught micro-arthropod that had been exposed to the nematode P. hermaphrodita for a period of 12 h were analysed and significant numbers of three taxa tested positive. This is the first application of PCR techniques for the study of nematophagy and the first time these techniques have been used to measure predation on nematodes in the field.  相似文献

Papaya plants producing the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) chitinase protein were obtained following microprojectile bombardment of embryogenic calli derived from the hypocotyls of the cultivar Kapoho. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was carried out to confirm the presence of the transgene. RT-PCR and a quantitative chitinase assay showed increased levels of chitinase activity in every selected transgenic line. Insect bioassays in the laboratory showed that plants expressing the Manduca sexta chitinase gene significantly inhibited multiplication of carmine spider mites (Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisd.). Experiments conducted to evaluate reaction of the transgenic plants to natural infection by carmine spider mites showed that the Manduca sexta chitinase gene provided increased tolerance under field conditions.  相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence indicating the potential value of essential oils as control agents against a range of arthropod ectoparasites, particularly lice, mites and ticks. Toxicity has been demonstrated following immersion and physical contact with treated surfaces, as well as after exposure to the vapour of these oils; the last of these factors implies that there is a neurotoxic, rather than simply a mechanical, pathway in their mode of action. However, the volatile nature of essential oils suggests that their residual activity is likely to be short‐lived. A possible advantage of essential oils over conventional ectoparasite treatments may refer to their reported ovicidal efficacy, although it is unclear whether this results from neurotoxicity or mechanical suffocation. There are many difficulties in comparing the findings of existing studies of essential oil toxicity. One major issue is the wide variation among batches in the relative concentrations of oil constituents. A second issue concerns the fact that many experimental designs make it difficult to confirm that the effect seen is attributable to the oil; in many cases inappropriate controls mean that the effects of the excipient on mortality cannot be distinguished. Hence, it is important that an excipient‐only control is always included in these bioassays. Furthermore, in direct contact assays, when attempting to identify the toxicity pathway of the essential oil tested, it is important to include a hydrophobic control. Without this, it is impossible to distinguish simple mechanical effects from neurological or other cellular toxicity. The use of essential oils in the control of veterinary ectoparasites is an area which holds considerable potential for the future and research into their use is still at an early stage. More extensive field trials, the standardization of components, the standardization of extraction, the standardization of good experimental design, mammalian toxicology profiling and excipient development, as well as further investigation into the residual activities and shelf‐lives of these oils are all required to allow the full realization of their potential.  相似文献

Predator species with the same prey interact not only by competition for food and space but also by intraguild predation (IGP). The impact of IGP on introduced phytoseiid mites and native species in the context of biological control is a matter of considerable debate. Amblyseius eharai is the dominant native citrus species in central China, while Amblyseius cucumeris and Amblyseius barkeri are candidates for importation. All three species can feed on the spider mite Panonychus citri, which is the main pest in citrus. This study investigated, in the laboratory, possible IGP among these species in the absence and presence of P. citri, respectively. IGP in different densities of shared prey and intraguild (IG) prey was also studied. All three species consumed heterospecific larvae and eggs but not adults, and the IGP rate of larvae was significantly higher than that of eggs in the absence of shared prey. Additionally, the IGP rate of each group was reduced dramatically in the presence of both shared and IG prey when compared to the absence of shared prey. This occurs most likely because the three species prefer to feed on their natural prey P. citri, rather than on IG prey. Our results showed that A. eharai seems to be a more voracious IG predator than A. cucumeris. A. eharai was much more prone to IGP than A. barkeri.  相似文献
