Summary We consider the problem of evaluating a statistical hypothesis when some model characteristics are nonidentifiable from observed data. Such a scenario is common in meta‐analysis for assessing publication bias and in longitudinal studies for evaluating a covariate effect when dropouts are likely to be nonignorable. One possible approach to this problem is to fix a minimal set of sensitivity parameters conditional upon which hypothesized parameters are identifiable. Here, we extend this idea and show how to evaluate the hypothesis of interest using an infimum statistic over the whole support of the sensitivity parameter. We characterize the limiting distribution of the statistic as a process in the sensitivity parameter, which involves a careful theoretical analysis of its behavior under model misspecification. In practice, we suggest a nonparametric bootstrap procedure to implement this infimum test as well as to construct confidence bands for simultaneous pointwise tests across all values of the sensitivity parameter, adjusting for multiple testing. The methodology's practical utility is illustrated in an analysis of a longitudinal psychiatric study.  相似文献

Summary .   We study the issue of identifiability of mixture models in the context of capture–recapture abundance estimation for closed populations. Such models are used to take account of individual heterogeneity in capture probabilities, but their validity was recently questioned by Link (2003, Biometrics 59, 1123–1130) on the basis of their nonidentifiability. We give a general criterion for identifiability of the mixing distribution, and apply it to establish identifiability within families of mixing distributions that are commonly used in this context, including finite and beta mixtures. Our analysis covers binomial and geometrically distributed outcomes. In an example we highlight the difference between the identifiability issue considered here and that in classical binomial mixture models.  相似文献

The T-cell cloning assay, which enables the enumeration and molecular analysis of 6-thioguanine resistant (HPRT-negative) mutant T-cells, has been extensively used for studying human somatic gene mutation in vivo. However, large inter-laboratory variations in the HPRT mutant frequency (MF) call for further investigation of inter-laboratory differences in the experimental methodology, and development of an optimal but easy uniform cloning protocol. As part of the EU Concerted Action on HPRT Mutation (EUCAHM), we have carried out two Ring tests for the T-cell cloning assay. For each test, duplicate and coded samples from three buffy coats were distributed to five laboratories for determination of MF using six different protocols. The results indicated a good agreement between split samples within each laboratory. However, both the cloning efficiencies (CEs) and MFs measured for the same blood donors showed substantial inter-laboratory variations. Also, different medium compositions used in one and the same laboratory resulted in a remarkable difference in the level of MF. A uniform operating protocol (UOP) was proposed and compared with the traditional protocols in the second Ring test. The UOP (preincubation) increased the CE in laboratories traditionally using preincubation, but decreased the CE in laboratories traditionally using priming. Adjusted for donor, use of different protocols contributed significantly to the overall variation in lnCE (P=0.0004) and lnMF (P=0.03), but there was no significant laboratory effect on the lnCE (P=0.38) or lnMF (P=0.14) produced by the UOP alone. Finally, a simplified version of the UOP using the serum-free medium X-Vivo 10 and PMA was tested in one laboratory, and found to produce a considerable increase in CE. This modified UOP needs to be further evaluated in order to be used for future databases on HPRT MFs in various populations.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss uniform persistence (UP) criteria of two prey- one predator systems, where we consider that the predator's diet selection is a sigmoidal function of the most profitable prey type in place of a step function of conventional diet choice theory. We also derive UP results of the system with direct interspecific competition between the prey. The role of the most profitable prey item as a keystone species, the magnitude of its carrying capacity, the ability to withstand predation of both prey species, and the ratios of their profitability values (to predators) are important to whether or not adaptive foraging may promote UP. In general, foraging decision rules play no role in UP if the alternative prey item is the keystone species. The result is also not affected by the effect of direct competitive coexistence or dominance relationship of the prey. In some cases, dominance of one of the prey species provides the most advantageous situation for ensuring UP. This paper examines various association, symmetry and “diagonal band” class models for both the British and Danish social mobility data. Composite models are also fitted to these data and the variety of models considered ensures that for most square tables, parsimonious models within the class of models examined in this study can always be found that will adequately describe such tables. The models considered in this study, which have been described in various forms by Goodman (1984), Upton (1985) and Tomizawa (1986) can suit most square tables having ordered classificatory variables. The asymptotic error rate of the equal-mean, uniform-covariance-matrix classification rule is approximated by a first order asymptotic expansion. The approximation is compared for accuracy with a Monte Carlo simulation. Aims: (1) Understanding how the relationship between species richness and its determinants depends on the interaction between scales at which the response and explanatory variables are measured. (2) Quantifying the relative contributions of local, intermediate and large‐scale determinants of species richness in a fragmented agro‐ecosystem. (3) Testing the hypothesis that the relative contribution of these determinants varies with the grain size at which species richness is measured. Location: A fragmented agro‐ecosystem in the Southern Judea Lowland, Israel, within a desert–Mediterranean transition zone. Methods: Plant species richness was estimated using hierarchical nested sampling in 81 plots, positioned in 38 natural vegetation patches within an agricultural matrix (mainly wheat fields) among three land units along a sharp precipitation gradient. Explanatory variables included position along that gradient, patch area, patch isolation, habitat heterogeneity and overall plant density. We used general linear models and hierarchical partitioning of variance to test and quantify the effect of each explanatory variable on species richness at four grain sizes (0.0625, 1, 25 and 225 m2). Results: Species richness was mainly affected by position along a precipitation gradient and overall plant density, and to a lesser extent by habitat heterogeneity. It was also significantly affected by patch area and patch isolation, but only for small grain sizes. The contribution of each explanatory variable to explained variance in species richness varied with grain size, i.e. scale‐dependent. The influence of geographic position and habitat heterogeneity on species richness increased with grain size, while the influence of plant density decreased with grain size. Main conclusions: Species richness is determined by the combined effect of several scale‐dependent determinants. Ability to detect an effect and effect size of each determinant varies with the scale (grain size) at which it is measured. The combination of a multi‐factorial approach and multi‐scale sampling reveals that conclusions drawn from studies that ignore these dimensions are restricted and potentially misleading.  相似文献

In this paper, an SIS patch model with non-constant transmission coefficients is formulated to investigate the effect of media coverage and human movement on the spread of infectious diseases among patches. The basic reproduction number R0 is determined. It is shown that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if R0?1, and the disease is uniformly persistent and there exists at least one endemic equilibrium if R0>1. In particular, when the disease is non-fatal and the travel rates of susceptible and infectious individuals in each patch are the same, the endemic equilibrium is unique and is globally asymptotically stable as R0>1. Numerical calculations are performed to illustrate some results for the case with two patches.  相似文献
