In the coastal lagoons of Southern France, sand smelt Atherina boyeri, is known as a sedentary species. However part of the sand smelt population living in the brackish water Vaccarès lagoon in the Camargue annually migrates to fresh waters. The movements of sand smelts within the watersystem of the Camargue were studied from 1986 to 1990. Fish traps and fyke nets were set and catches were standardised to Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE). A Stepwise Multiple Correlation analysis was carried out to link fish abundance with various environmental factors. Between September and November, sand smelts living in the Vaccarès start to colonize fresh waters (drainage canals and then temporary marshes), until March. Spawning occurs from April to June, both in the shallow branches of the canal and in the marshes. From June onwards adults and young-of-the year leave the fresh waters and return to the Vaccarès lagoon where they remain until the next migration. This autumnal migration to freshwater habitats involves mainly fish less than 3 years old, the oldest individuals remaining all year in the Vaccarès. Water level and photoperiod contribute to 20.7% of the variation of CPUE within the drainage canal, while date, water temperature, and rainfall combined, only account for 2.5% of CPUE variations. Date and photoperiod contribute significantly to explaining the patterns of fish migrations between the canal and the marshes. The density of mature sand smelt in the marshes before spawning, varies between 4 and 4346 fish ha–1. Fry mortality (against number of eggs spawned) over the first two months of life was assessed to vary between 97.5% and 99.9%. Physiological factors such as osmoregulation linked to water temperature are possibly the ultimate factors explaining these unusual annual migrations of sand smelt in the Camargue.  相似文献

This paper questions if chemical barriers prevent the occurrence of benthic invertebrates in the river Meuse. To this purpose an ecotoxicological analysis is presented, using published observations on the zebra musselDreissena polymorpha, a tolerant species that maintains populations in the river. Zebra mussels collected or exposed at the Belgian-Dutch border contained high levels of several groups of toxicants, and mixture toxicity is likely to occur. A recently developed bio-assay, using the filtration rate of the zebra mussel, demonstrated strong inhibitory effects of water from the river Meuse. To determine which (combination of) toxicants cause such effects, laboratory experiments with toxicant mixtures were carried out. It was demonstrated that in a mixture of five metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb) the metals contributed to the toxicity of the mixture below the No Observed Effect Concentrations (NOEC) for these metals when tested individually. The average concentration of Cu, Zn and possibly Pb in Meuse water exceed the NOEC values for filtration rate. Thus, it seems likely that joint effects of different (groups of) toxicants in the river Meuse cause the overall toxicity of the water for the zebra mussel, explaining the marginal populations at the test site, while other river species are absent there. It is suggested that toxicants in the river Meuse restrict the recolonisation of the river by invertebrate species more sensitive than the zebra mussel. This will be studied using invertebrates of different sensitivities (molluscs, arthropods), enabling the assessment of toxicity at different stages of water quality improvement of the river Meuse.  相似文献

Suspended particulate matter dynamics in estuaries can be split into more or less regular and periodic phenomena dominated by the tide and aperiodic events like river spates which have lasting effects on the suspended matter distribution. The catchment areas of the estuaries of both the River Elbe and R. Weser (Germany) are subject to almost the same meteorological conditions. But the mean freshwater runoff of R. Elbe is about twice the mean R. Weser runoff. In the turbidity maxima of both estuaries, suspended matter dynamics are dominated by the tide most of the year. The turbidity maxima are associated with the low salinity regions, and the locations of both the mixing zones and turbidity maxima depend on runoff. In both estuaries, mixing zone and turbidity maximum react almost immediately and simultaneously on strong increases of runoff. During river floods no turbidity maxima can be observed in the inner estuaries. With decreasing runoff after a river flood the re-establishment of the turbidity maximum lags behind the return of the mixing zone. The restoration of the turbidity maximum to its normal magnitude lasts for months. For the 7 river floods presented here the restoration period varied from 1 to 6 months for the Weser and from 5 to 7 months for the Elbe estuary.  相似文献

Organic material transport in the New River, Virginia, was investigated over a 12 month period. Collections were made using drift nets and grab water samples from bridges at two sites about 210 km apart. About midway between the two sampling sites is a 1920 ha impoundment used for flood control and power generation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) ranged 1–50 mg l–1 at Site 1, upstream from the impoundment, and 11–19 mg l–1 at Site 2 and was the most abundant form of organic matter at both sites during most periods of the year. Fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) ranged 1–45 mg l–1 at Site 1 and 1–9 mg l–1 at Site 2. Concentration of coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) ranged 0.1–0.7 mg l–1 at Site 1 and 0.1–0.2 mg l–1 at Site 2. On an annual basis, the organic matter loads at Site 1 and Site 2 were computed to be 67 000 and 76 800 T y–1, respectively, suggesting that the impoundment trapped and processed POM, and that municipal and industrial treatment facilities between the study sites supplemented DOM in the river.  相似文献

以古河道、绿洲农田和沙漠区3种景观条件下的11个生境为实验对象,采用陷阱技术,监测景观异质性条件下不同生境地表甲虫多样性动态分布。在整个监测期内11个生境中共采集地表甲虫1262头,地表甲虫隶属15科,其中拟步甲科Tenebrionidae、步甲科Carabida和象甲科Curculionidae为该地区的优势类群,分别占地表甲虫个体总量的58.72%、20.6%和8.72%;古河道和沙漠区物种丰富度大于绿洲区,但绿洲区有机农田防护林(L2)多样性指数在11个生境中最大,不同生态界面之间的多样性指数没有显著性差异,但小生境内存在差异性。群落排序表明:拟步甲喜好干旱、地表有一定凋落物的小生境;步甲则偏好有机质比较高、土壤湿度大的绿洲农业区。绿洲农业区域拟步甲类群数量相对沙漠区域下降近20倍,古河道区域该类甲虫数量下降近8倍。土地开垦导致景观破碎化和微环境变化是物种多样性丧失的重要因子。在干旱区管理中,土地开垦区域选择、残留地和动物通道的设置及环境友好农业生产建设,是保护地表甲虫的重要途径。  相似文献

Substantial seasonal changes in resource use associated with enhanced water‐column use were revealed in stream‐living YOY Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus during the ice‐free season. In July, YOY individuals showed a diet dominated by aquatic invertebrates (mainly Chironomidae larvae), but despite the small size of the fish, the abundance of terrestrial insects in their diet increased markedly from July to September (from 1·9 to 62·8%). Similarly, the frequency of surface drifting foragers, i.e. individuals feeding on allochthonous resources, increased from July to September (from 20·6 to 80%); allochthonous resources thus constituting an important energy subsidy for YOY S. alpinus during the late sub‐Arctic summer.  相似文献

An in situ camera set‐up was used to study the spawning activity of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brown trout Salmo trutta throughout two consecutive seasons in a spawning area affected by hydropower‐related pulse flows due to hydropeaking. The purpose was to test whether the flow variation discouraged spawning in shallow areas or motivated spawning into areas with elevated risk of incubation mortality. There were more S. salar observed on the spawning ground during days with high discharge. The presence of S. salar in the spawning grounds was not affected by the hydropeaking cycles of the preceding night. Female S. salar were observed preparing nests within the first hour after water discharge had increased to levels suitable for spawning. In contrast, the number of S. trutta was not correlated with flow and nest preparation was also observed at a discharge corresponding to the lowest discharge levels during a hydropeaking cycle. Survival was generally high in nests excavated the following winter, with only 5·4% suffering mortality due to dewatering. The results suggest that S. salar may respond rapidly to variable‐flow conditions and utilize short windows with suitable flows for spawning. Smaller S. trutta may utilize low‐flow conditions to spawn in areas that are not habitable by larger S. salar during low flow.  相似文献

Hoplias malabaricus is a common fish species occurring in white, black and clear water rivers of the Amazon basin. Its large distribution across distinct aquatic environments can pose stressful conditions for dispersal and creates possibilities for the emergence of local adaptive profiles. We investigated the chromosomal localization of repetitive DNA markers (constitutive heterochromatin, rDNA and the transposable element REX-3) in populations from the Amazonas river (white water), the Negro river (black water) and the Tapajós river (clear water), in order to address the variation/association of cytogenomic features and environmental conditions. We found a conserved karyotypic macrostructure with a diploid number of 40 chromosomes (20 metacentrics + 20 submetacentrics) in all the samples. Heteromorphism in pair 14 was detected as evidence for the initial differentiation of an XX/XY system. Minor differences detected in the amount of repetitive DNA markers are interpreted as possible signatures of local adaptations to distinct aquatic environments.  相似文献
