One of the vital roles of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is to act as an antioxidant to protect cellular components from free radical damage. Ascorbic acid has been shown to scavenge free radicals directly in the aqueous phases of cells and the circulatory system. Ascorbic acid has also been proven to protect membrane and other hydrophobic compartments from such damage by regenerating the antioxidant form of vitamin E. In addition, reduced coenzyme Q, also a resident of hydrophobic compartments, interacts with vitamin E to regenerate its antioxidant form. The mechanism of vitamin C antioxidant function, the myriad of pathologies resulting from its clinical deficiency, and the many health benefits it provides, are reviewed. 相似文献

Folk beliefs associated with death and disease can impact on the bioarcheological record. Unusual postmortem actions by humans and distinctive paleopathological evidence may be clues to these beliefs. This report presents bioarcheological and paleopathological evidence in support of a 19th century New England folk belief in vampires with a particular reference to a colonial period burial. The New England folk belief in vampires revolves around the ability of a deceased tuberculosis victim to return from the dead as a vampire and cause the “wasting away” of the surviving relatives. To stop the actions of the vampire, the body of the consumptive was exhumed and disrupted in various ways. Twelve historic accounts of this activity indicate that the belief was not uncommon in 19th century New England. This creative interpretation of contagion is consistent with the etiology of tuberculosis. Three pieces of evidence are important in this case. The skeleton of a 50- to 55-year-old male from a mid-19th century Connecticut cemetery exhibiting pulmonary tuberculosis rib lesions are discussed. In addition, certain bones in the skeleton were rearranged after decomposition was complete. A historic vampire account from the same time period and geographical location place the belief within the parameters of the cemetery. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Laboratory hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were experimentally infected with 75 ± 15 metacercarial cysts of Echinostoma caproni. Worms were recovered from days 7 to 89 post-infection with eight to 90 (average 37) parasites in the small intestine. Worm wet weights averaged 0.85 mg at 10 days, 1.8 mg at 17 days, 3.4 mg at 45 days, and 7.7 mg at 89 days; average dry weights for the identical days were, 0.15, 0.30, 0.70 and 2.2 mg, respectively. The average body area of worms fixed in hot (80°C) alcohol-formalin-acetic acid was 0.21 mm2 on day 3, 4.9 mm2 on day 10, and 17.7 mm2 on day 42. Clinical signs in some hamsters included progressive unthriftiness and watery diarrhea. Gross examination revealed enlarged lymphatic nodules along the length of the small intestine. The histopathological responses of hamsters to the parasite showed erosion of the intestinal villi with lymphocytic infiltration being the primary response; hemorrhagic areas were also observed in the villi. 相似文献

To analyse the clinical features, imaging manifestation, pathological typing and genetic testing results of patients undergoing surgery for ground-glass opacity (GGO) nodules, and explore the reasonable diagnosis and treatment program for GGO patients as to provide the basis for the establishment of GGO treatment process. This study is an exploratory study. 465 cases with GGO confirmed by HRCT, undergoing surgery and approved by pathologic diagnosis in Shanghai pulmonary hospital were enrolled in this study. All the patients with GGO were cases with single lesion. The relationship between the clinical, imaging, pathological and molecular biological data of single GGO were statistically studied. (1) Among 465 cases, the median age was 58 years and females were 315 (67.7%); there were 397 (85.4%) non-smoking, and 354 cases (76.1%) had no clinical symptoms. There were 33 cases of benign and 432 cases of malignant GGO. Significant differences were observed on the size, vacuole sign, pleural indentation and blood vessel sign of GGO between two groups (p < 0.05). Of 230 mGGO, there were no AAH, 13 cases of AIS, 25 cases of MIA and 173 cases of invasive adenocarcinoma. The probability of solid nodules in invasive adenocarcinoma was higher than that in micro invasive carcinoma, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). 360 cases were followed up with the average follow-up time of 6.05 months, and GGO of 34 cases (9.4%) increased. (2) In 428 adenocarcinoma samples approved by pathologic diagnosis, there were 262 (61.2%) lesions of EGFR mutation, 14 (3.3%) lesions of KRAS mutation, 1 (0.2%) lesion of Braf mutation, 9 (2.1%) lesions of EML4-ALK gene fusion and 2 (0.5%) lesions of ROS1 fusion. The detection rate of gene mutation in mGGO was higher than that of pGGO. During the follow-up period, genetic testing results of 32 GGO showed that EGFR mutation rate was 53.1%, ALK positive rate of 6.3%, KRAS mutation rate of 3.1% and no ros1 and BRAF gene mutation. No statistically significant difference was observed in comparison with unchanged GGO. (3) EGFR mutation rate of invasive adenocarcinoma was the highest (168/228, 73.7%), mainly in the 19Del and L858R point mutations. No KRAS mutation was found in atypical adenoma hyperplasia. No significant difference was observed on the mutation rate of KRAS between different types of GGO (p = 0.811). EML4-ALK fusion gene was mainly detected in invasive adenocarcinoma (7/9). GGO tends to occur in young, non-smoking women. The size of GGO is related to the degree of malignancy. Pleural depression sign, vacuole sign and vascular cluster sign are all characteristic images of malignant GGO. pGGO and mGGO reflect the pathological development of GGO. During the follow-up, it is found that GGO increases and solid components appear, which is the indication of surgical resection. The detection rate of EGFR mutations in mGGO and invasive adenocarcinoma is high. pGGO has heterogeneity in imaging, pathology and molecular biology. Heterogeneity research helps to formulate correct individualized diagnosis and treatment plans. 相似文献

Cerebral amyloid beta (Aβ) deposits are the main early pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, abundant Aβ deposits also occur spontaneously in the brains of many healthy people who are free of AD with advancing aging. A crucial unanswered question in AD prevention is why AD does not develop in some elderly people, despite the presence of Aβ deposits. The answer may lie in the composition of Aβ oligomer isoforms in the Aβ deposits of healthy brains, which are different from AD brains. However, which Aβ oligomer triggers the transformation from aging to AD pathogenesis is still under debate. Some researchers insist that the Aβ 12‐mer causes AD pathology, while others suggest that the Aβ dimer is the crucial molecule in AD pathology. Aged rhesus monkeys spontaneously develop Aβ deposits in the brain with striking similarities to those of aged humans. Thus, rhesus monkeys are an ideal natural model to study the composition of Aβ oligomer isoforms and their downstream effects on AD pathology. In this study, we found that Aβ deposits in aged monkey brains included 3‐mer, 5‐mer, 9‐mer, 10‐mer, and 12‐mer oligomers, but not 2‐mer oligomers. The Aβ deposits, which were devoid of Aβ dimers, induced glial pathology (microgliosis, abnormal microglia morphology, and astrocytosis), but not the subsequent downstream pathologies of AD, including Tau pathology, neurodegeneration, and synapse loss. Our results indicate that the Aβ dimer plays an important role in AD pathogenesis. Thus, targeting the Aβ dimer is a promising strategy for preventing AD. 相似文献

In the progression of osteoarthritis, pathological calcification in the affected joint is an important feature. The role of these crystallites in the pathogenesis and progression of osteoarthritis is controversial; it remains unclear whether they act as a disease initiator or are present as a result of joint damage. Recent studies reported that the molecular mechanisms regulating physiological calcification of skeletal tissues are similar to those regulating pathological or ectopic calcification of soft tissues. Pathological calcification takes place when the equilibrium is disrupted. Calcium phosphate crystallites are identified in most affected joints and the presence of these crystallites is closely correlated with the extent of joint destruction. These observations suggest that pathological calcification is most likely to be a disease initiator instead of an outcome of osteoarthritis progression. Inhibiting pathological crystallite deposition within joint tissues therefore represents a potential therapeutic target in the management of osteoarthritis. 相似文献
