Three species of fungi, Catenaria auxiliarls (Kühn) Tribe, Nematophthora gynophila Kerry and Crump, and a Lagenidiaceous fungus have been found attacking female cyst nematodes. All are zoosporic fungi which parasitize females on the root surface, cause the breakdown of the nematode cuticle, and prevent cyst formation. Their identification and some aspects of their biology are reviewed. N. gynophila is widespread in Britain and reduces populations of the cereal cyst nematode, Heterodera avenae Woll., to nondamaging levels. The potential of these nematophagous fungi as biocontrol agents is discussed. 相似文献

Isolates of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides obtained from yam‐based cropping systems in Nigeria, previously characterized on the basis of morphology, virulence and rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence variation were further compared for vegetative compatibility (VC). Chlorate‐resistant nitrate non‐utilizing (nit) mutants were generated from the isolates and used in complementation (heterokaryon) tests. Tests of VC between complementary mutants from different isolates indicated the presence of several genotypes within a single field, suggesting limited clonal spread. In some cases, isolates obtained from the same lesion were observed to belong to different vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs). No compatibility was observed between isolates of the highly virulent slow‐growing grey (SGG), the moderately virulent fast‐growing salmon (FGS) and the avirulent/weakly virulent fast‐growing grey (FGG) strains. Forty‐one C. gloeosporioides isolates belonged to 28 VCGs, giving a genotype diversity estimate of 0.68. This diversity confirmed the high variability of the pathogen population as revealed by previous characterization studies, however, a correlation between VCGs and isolate groupings based on morphology and virulence was not found. The finding that an isolate from weed was compatible with yam isolates indicated that transfer of important traits, such as virulence, may take place between isolates from yam and non‐yam hosts. The VCG diversity revealed by this study suggests that in addition to asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction may play an important role in the epidemiology of anthracnose on yam. 相似文献

Abstract: We tested the hypothesis that cultivar selection during the process of domestication in cereal plants led to a change in dry mass allocation, e.g., less root mass and more leaf mass or more leaf area per unit leaf mass. We divided 24 varieties of diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid winter wheat and two-rowed winter barley into three categories of domestication levels (wild species, old landraces and modern cultivars) and compared the patterns of dry matter fractionation at the time of anthesis under standardized outdoor growth conditions. In both cereals, total biomass per individual increased significantly with domestication level but, to our surprise, we found no significant change in dry matter investment between domestication levels: neither the dry mass fraction of leaves increased, nor was there a trend of reduced investment in stems and roots, contrary to what we expected. Specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) of modern wheat and barley cultivars were significantly lower compared to wild varieties. Major differences in both cereals were of a purely morphological nature, namely a decrease in the number of stems and ears from wild species to domesticated varieties, along with more synchronous tiller development and therefore similar tiller size. Fertilizer increased total biomass in all domestication levels in both cereals, but influenced the dry matter fractionation only in barley. Tissue nitrogen concentration was unresponsive to both domestication and fertilization. The expected shift in functional traits, conventionally considered to determine plant growth, was not found. Two chickpea species, one wild (Cicer reticulatum JM2106) and one cultivated (C. arietinum ICC8923) were selected as the parents for this study. C. reticulatum showed high nodule number, nodule dry weight and nitrogen content/plant as compared to C. arietinum. In lines derived from the crosses H208 × (ICC8923 × JM2106) and BG274 × (ICC8923 × JM2106), increase in nodule dry weight, nitrogen content/plant, plant dry weight and grain yield was observed over the parent ICC8923. Similarly F6 lines also showed improvement in these traits over the cultivated parent. It is concluded that the increase in grain yield and dry matter is the result of improvement in nitrogen utilisation together with an increase in the available fixed nitrogen. 相似文献

Powdered dried ginkgo tree leaves were subjected to various chemical extractions and successive extracts were monitored for antifeedant activity against larvae of Pieris brassicae. Many fractions moderately inhibited food intake, and some were deterrent at levels as low as 25–50 ppm. Some behaviourally highly active fractions were tested electrophysiologically for neural responses in the maxillary taste sensilla. These extracts appeared to stimulate deterrent receptors. There were distinct differences in responses between Pieris brassicae and P. rapae. Ginkgolide A, B, and C each strongly stimulated deterrent receptors in P. rapae, which corresponds with the observation (Matsumoto & Sei, 1987) that these compounds are effective antifeedants for this species. No toxic effects were observed in insects after feeding for 24 h on diets containing ginkgo extracts.
Résumé Des feuilles de Gingko séchées et broyées ont été soumises à différentes extractions. On a testé l'activité déterrante (antiapprétant) des extraits successifs sur les larves de Pieris brassicae. Un grand nombre de fractions inhibent modérément la consommation, et certaines sont déterrantes à des concentrations aussi faibles que 25–50 ppm. Par électrophysiologie, on a testé la réponse nerveuse des sensilles gustatives maxillaires à certaines fractions qui montraient une forte action sur le comportement. Il s'avère que ces extraits stimulent les récepteurs déterrants. Les réponses diffèrent pour P. brassicae et P. rapae. Les gingkolides A, B et C stimulent chacun fortement les récepteurs déterrants chez P. rapae, ce qui correspond aux observations (Matsumoto & Sei, 1987) selon lesquelles ces composés sont des antiappétants efficaces pour cette espèce. On n'a pas observé d'effet toxique sur les insectes nourris durant 24 heures par des diètes contenant des extraits de Gingko.相似文献

This work is an investigation of the influence of ABA and calcium on soluble and wall-bound activities of peroxidase and O-diphenol oxidase of cotton fibres at the stages of primary and secondary wall development, during incubation of intact fibres for 3h at 28°C. ABA (10 M) caused marked inhibition of enzyme activities in both the fractions, whereas calcium (1 mM) was promotory. The incorporation of 1 mM EGTA (a calcium chelator) and chlorpromazine (10 g cm–3) (a calmodulin antagonist) resulted in decreased enzyme activities suggesting regulation of enzyme synthesis and/or secretion to the cell wall by calcium-calmodulin. As a general trend, the relative effect of Ca2+ on the activity of peroxidase in the wall was much greater than on the soluble activity, but this was not true of O-diphenol oxidase. It is inferred that ABA inhibits enzymic activities by inhibiting calmodulin synthesis or its mobilization to sites of action.Abbreviations ABA

Diseased seedlings and roots of cabbage and mustard of Khurpatal (Nainital), were surveyed for zoosporic plant pathogens. Pythium aphanidermatum and P. debaryanum were isolated from cabbage and P. middletonii, P. spinosum and P. undulatum were isolated from mustard. Pathogenicity tests conducted in the glasshouse indicated that P. debaryanum and P. spinosum are the most virulent pathogens of cabbage and mustard respectively. 相似文献

We evaluated 151 coded isolates of medically important yeast species belonging to the genera Candida, Cryptococcus, Geotrichum, Rhodoturula, Saccharomyces and Torulopsis using the newly developed rapid Pro-Lab Identification Ring, PL 960 system (PLID-Ring). All isolates were concurrently identified by the API 20C and conventional procedures comprising macro- and micromorphology, assimilation and fermentation of various carbon and nitrogen compounds. The PLID-Ring system identified isolates of Candida albicans, C. kefyr, C. krusei, C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis, Rhodotorula rubra, and Torulopsis glabrata with 100% accuracy in 24 h. This system identified C guilliermondii and S. cerevisiae isolates with an accuracy of 90% and 86%, respectively, while those belonging to Cr. neoformans, T. candida (= C. famata), C. rugosa and C. tropicalis were identified with 38.4%, 50%, 12.5% and 50% accuracy, respectively. Three isolates of Cr. laurentii were not identified by the PLID-Ring system. The overall accuracy of the PLID-Ring system was 81.45% (123 of 151 isolates). However, the system does not include species such as Cr. laurentii in its data base. When these three Cr. laurentii isolates were excluded from the evaluation, the accuracy of the PLID-Ring system increased from 81.45% to 83.1%. 相似文献

Cytophaga johnsonae Stanier strain C21 (C. johnsonae C21) contains phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), an unusual glycine-containing lipid (glycine lipid), and two kinds of unidentified lipid as major lipid components. One of the latter lipids was identified by chemical and physicochemical methods as iso-3-hydroxy fatty acid, -amide linked to ornithine and esterified to iso-nonhydroxy fatty acid (ornithine lipid). The other lipid was identified as a sulfonolipid by a tracer experiment using 35S. PE, glycine lipid and sulfonolipid were found in all seven species of Cytophage examined, namely, C. huchinsonii, C. heparina, C. johnsonae C21, C. aquatilis, and three unidentified species of Cytophaga. However, ornithine lipid was found only in the latter five species. By contrast, a serine-containing lipid, which is a specific lipid component of Flavobacterium species, was not found in any species of Cytophaga examined. The possible use and significance of amino acid-containing lipids and sulfonolipids as chemosystematic markers of the Cytophaga species are discussed. 相似文献
