The intelligentsia informed habitus in social distance strategies of Polish migrants in the UK

Antagonism and conflict within newly resident UK Polish migrants has been typically related to labour market competition. Without denying the relevance of this argument, we argue that explanations of antagonism within the Polish community should also take into account the role of a Polish intelligentsia habitus. This habitus provides a repertoire of available discursive strategies used for interpreting antagonistic and “risk” situations both in Poland and among Poles abroad. It is argued that not only can this intelligentsia habitus critically legitimize intergroup inequalities in status and symbolic power but also may impact on the patterns of a migrant’s integration, linkage to social networks, access to different capital resources, and interactions with the indigenous population.     

Validation of ecological status concepts in UK rivers using historic diatom samples

We assessed the feasibility of using herbarium specimens to validate reference conditions in the UK by comparing diatom community composition of river sites with both recent and historic diatom samples. The question of substrate specificity was addressed by comparing epilithon (stone-derived) and epiphyton (plant-derived) samples from a number of rivers. No significant differences were found between the Trophic Diatom Index (TDI), species richness, species diversity, and percentage of motile valves between paired diatom samples (epilithic and epiphytic) from contemporary samples. Significant differences were recorded between a number of indices derived from analysis of the historic diatom samples on plant material sampled pre-1930 compared with diatoms from stones collected post-1990 from the same river location. The TDI, mean species richness, and species diversity and percentage of motile valves and nutrient tolerant valves were all significantly greater in the contemporary samples (p ≤ 0.05). The percentage of nutrient sensitive valves was significantly lower in the contemporary samples (p ≤ 0.05).The relative abundance of Achnanthidium minutissimum and Cocconeis placentula var. lineata was significantly greater on the herbarium material compared to matched contemporary samples. Calculated values for the TDI (43 ± 3) expected at reference conditions were similar to the observed TDI values derived from herbarium material (44 ± 12) showing no significant deviation in ecological status.     

Dexamethasone inhibition and phorbol myristate acetate stimulation of plasminogen activator in human embryonic lung cells

Treatment of human embryonic lung cells with dexamethasone resulted in a decrease in plasminogen activator activity measured in the fibrinolytic assay. The decrease in activity could at least partially be explained by the presence of an inhibitory substance(s) based on the following observations of lysates of dexamethasone-treated vs. control cells: a) an increase in specific activity following subcellular fractionation; b) an increase in fibrinolytic activity following separation by gel electrophoresis; c) an increase in fibrinolytic activity following mild acid-treatment; and d) a decrease in urokinase-directed fibrinolytic activity in mixing experiments. Phorbol myristate acetate increased plasminogen activator activity without affecting the level of inhibitory substance.     

Nuclear magnetic resonance studies of the phenylalanine residues of eukaryotic cytochrome c

The resonances of Phe 82 and Phe 10 in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of horse cytochrome c are reassigned using nuclear Overhauser enhancements. The reassignments provide new information about the oxidation state linked conformation change of cytochrome c. The region of the protein now known to be affected by the change extends to the part of the protein close to Phe 10.     

Neuron specific enolase: a marker for the early development of nerves and endocrine cells in the human lung

Neuron specific enolase (NSE), an isoenzyme of the glycolytic enzyme enolase, has been established by immunocytochemical means as a marker of morphological and functional maturation in central neurons and appears late in development. However, little is known about the presence of NSE in developing peripheral neurons and endocrine cells and its relationship to the development of classical neurotransmitters and peptides. We therefore investigated the appearance of NSE immunoreactivity in nerves and mucosal endocrine cells of the human respiratory tract in foetal, neonatal and adult life. NSE was found to be present in neuroblasts, nerve fibres and endocrine cells from the earliest period of gestation examined (8 weeks), before the appearance of acetylcholinesterase activity (10-12 weeks), dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (20 weeks), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (20 weeks) or calcitonin (20 weeks). Bombesin-like immunoreactivity was found in a small proportion of mucosal endocrine cells as early as eight weeks in the foetal respiratory tract. These findings indicate that unlike central neurons and their processes, peripheral neurons of the lung contain NSE immunoreactivity well before full maturation and establishment of synaptic contact with end organs.     

UK policy on folate fortification of foods

The UK Food Standards A gency has decided not to recommend fortification of foods with folate, the family of vitamins associated with the prevention of neural tube defects in babies. This is a change in attitude from previous recommendations made by a series of committees and reports in the UK. Notably, it differs from US policy on the matter. The debate may not be over yet, however.
