Ecological theory suggests that the coexistence of species is promoted by the partitioning of available resources, as in dietary niche partitioning where predators partition prey. Yet, the mechanisms underlying dietary niche partitioning are not always clear. We used fecal DNA metabarcoding to investigate the diets of seven nocturnal insectivorous bird and bat species. Low diet overlap (2%–22%) supported resource partitioning among all species. Differences in diet corresponded with species identity, prey detection method, and foraging behavior of predators. Insects with ultrasonic hearing capabilities were consumed significantly more often by birds than bats, consistent with an evolved avoidance of echolocating strategies. In turn, bats consumed a greater proportion of noneared insects such as spruce budworms. Overall, our results suggest that evolutionary interactions among bats and moths translate to dietary niche partitioning and coexistence among bats and nocturnal birds.  相似文献

The adult gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (Lymantriidae: Noctuoidea) has a pair of metathoracic tympanic ears that each contain a two-celled auditory chordotonal organ (CO). The earless forest tent caterpillar moth, Malacosoma disstria (Lasiocampidae: Bombycoidea), has a homologous pair of three-celled, nonauditory hindwing COs in their place. The purpose of our study was to determine whether the adult CO in both species arises from a preexisting larval organ or if it develops as a novel structure during metamorphosis. We describe the larval metathoracic nervous system of L. dispar and M. distria, and identify a three-celled chordotonal organ in the anatomically homologous site as the adult CO. If the larval CO is severed from the homologue of the adult auditory nerve (IIIN1b1) in L. dispar prior to metamorphosis, the adult develops an ear lacking an auditory organ. Axonal backfills of the larval IIIN1b1 nerve in both species reveal three chordotonal sensory neurons and one nonchordotonal multipolar cell. The axons of these cells project into tracts of the central nervous system putatively homologous with those of the auditory pathways in adult L. dispar. Following metamorphosis, M. disstria moths retain all four cells (three CO and one multipolar) while L. dispar adults possess two cells that service the auditory CO and one nonauditory, multipolar cell. We conclude that the larval IIIN1b1 CO is the precursor of both the auditory organ in L. dispar and the putative proprioceptor CO in M. disstria and represents the premetamorphic condition of these insects. The implications of our results in understanding the evolution of the ear in the Lepidoptera and insects in general are discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract  The Australasian genus Scotocyma Turner is revised, containing the species S. albinotata (Walker), S. legalis (Warren), S. asiatica Holloway, S. scotopepla Prout, stat. n., S. manusensis Prout, stat. n., S. mimula (Warren), stat. n. and S. miscix Prout. Scotocyma euryochra Turner, syn. n., S. idioschema Turner, syn. n., S. ischnophrica Turner, syn. n. and S. transfixa Turner, syn. n. are regarded as synonyms of S. albinotata . Four species are described as new: S. samoensis , sp. n., S. sumatrensis , sp. n., S. rutilimixta , sp. n. and S. longiuncus , sp. n. Lectotypes are designated for S. scotopepla , S. manusensis and S. miscix . All species are illustrated, and keys to species and distribution maps are provided. A phylogenetic analysis was performed to test the monophyly of the genus and to examine distribution patterns of the species. A biogeographical discussion is included. The tribal position of the genus is clarified and relationships to closely related genera are discussed.  相似文献

  • 1 The attraction of nocturnal moths (Noctuidae and Geometridae) to fermenting sugar baits and to volatile organic compounds formed in these baits was studied by field trapping in South Finland.
  • 2 In general, noctuids were attracted synergistically to these compounds (i.e. a mixture of compounds attracted more moths than the summed attraction of the components of the mixture predicted). Geometrids were not attracted synergistically. A similar pattern, with a few exceptions, was obtained by specific evaluation of forty-one noctuid and fifteen geometrid species.
  • 3 The degree of synergistic response was correlated with the general morphology of the moths. The robust species (proportionally large thorax and small wings; most of the Noctuidae) were attracted synergistically, while the slender species (proportionally small thorax and large wings; most of the Geometridae) were only weakly or not at all attracted synergistically.
  • 4 The ecological background of the morphology-related synergism is discussed. It is suggested that the energy demands of the robust species are substantially higher than those of the slender species, thus leading to different foraging strategies.

Chemical communication is ubiquitous in nature and chemical signals convey species-specific messages. Despite their specificity, chemical signals may not be limited to only one function. Identifying alternative functions of chemical signals is key to understanding how chemical communication systems evolve. Here, we explored alternative functions of moth sex pheromone compounds. These chemicals are generally produced in, and emitted from, dedicated sex pheromone glands, but some have recently also been found on the insects' legs. We identified and quantified the chemicals in leg extracts of the three heliothine moth species Chloridea (Heliothis) virescens, Chloridea (Heliothis) subflexa and Helicoverpa armigera, compared their chemical profiles and explored the biological function of pheromone compounds on moth legs. Identical pheromone compounds were present on the legs in both sexes of all three species, with no striking interspecies or intersex differences. Surprisingly, we also found pheromone-related acetate esters in leg extracts of species that lack acetate esters in their female sex pheromone. When we assessed gene expression levels in the leg tissue, we found known and putative pheromone-biosynthesis genes expressed, which suggests that moth legs may be additional sites of pheromone production. To determine possible additional roles of the pheromone compounds on legs, we explored whether these may act as oviposition-deterring signals, which does not seem to be the case. However, when we tested whether these chemicals have antimicrobial properties, we found that two pheromone compounds (16:Ald and 16:OH) reduce bacterial growth. Such an additional function of previously identified pheromone compounds likely coincides with additional selection pressures and, thus, should be considered in scenarios on the evolution of these signals.  相似文献

The midgut epithelium of adult Erinnyis ello L. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) forms ramified villus-like folds. The epithelial cells exhibit long microvilli and narrow and sinuous basal channels studded with particles. These morphological features are thought to be involved in the absorption of nutrients present in low concentration in food. Enzymatic assays in E. ello adults showed the presence of amylase in salivary glands, and the occurrence of aminopeptidase, -fructosidase, - and -glucosidase, trehalase and trypsin in the midgut. Calcium differential precipitation of midgut homogenates showed that aminopeptidase and -glucosidase are integral proteins of the microvillar cell membranes, whereas the other enzymes are soluble or partly soluble and partly membrane bound. Detergent-solubilized aminopeptidase (pH optimum 7.5) sediments as a protein with Mr 120000, whereas trehalase (pH optimum 6.5), as a protein with Mr 95000. The activities of amylase (pH optimum 5.5), -glucosidase (pH optimum 5.0) and trypsin (pH optimum 9.5) were not sufficiently high to be further characterized, whereas -fructosidase and membrane-bound -glucosidase were characterized elsewhere. The data suggest that nectar-feeding E. ello adults are able to some extent to digest and absorb starch and proteins, in addition to nectar sugars. Initial digestion is considered to occur in midgut lumen and final digestion on the surface of midgut cells under the action of microvillar enzymes.
Résumé L'épithélium de l'intestin moyen des adultes de E. ello L; (Lépido., Sphingidae) est replié en villosités. Les cellules épithéliales présentent de longs microvilli et d'étroits canaux sinueux basaux garnis de particules. Ces caractères morphologiques peuvent être interprétés comme impliquant l'absorption d'aliments présents en faible concentration dans la nourriture. Des études enzymatiques ont révélé la présence d'amylase dans les glandes salivaires, et la découverte d'aminopeptidase, de -fructosidase, d'- et -glucosidases, de tréhalase et de trypsine dans l'intestin moyen. La précipitation calcique différentielle d'homogénats de l'intestin moyen a montré que l'aminopeptidase et l'-glucosidase sont des protéines appartenant aux membranes microvillaires cellulaires, tandis que les autres enzymes sont entièrement ou partiellement solubles et partiellement liées aux membranes. L'aminopeptidase solubilisée par un détergent (pH optimum: 7,5) sédimente comme une protéine de Mr 120000, tandis que la tréhalase (pH optimum: 6,5) comme une protéine de Mr 95000. Les activités de l'amylase (pH optimum: 5,5), de la -glucosidase (pH optimum 5,0) et de la trypsine (pH optimum 9,5) n'étaient pas suffisantes pour être caractérisées, tandis que la -fructosidase et l'-glucosidase liée à la membrane ont été caractérisées ailleurs. The Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Reservation initiated an oak forest restoration in 1990, using thinning and burning to encourage regeneration of oak forest species. In 96 quadrats (81 treatment and 15 control), understory woody species were inventoried from 1992 to 2002, and canopy opening was quantified. Six years into the study, the entire reservation became heavily populated with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar), complicating the restoration efforts. During data analysis, understory woody species were classified into oak forest type and nonoak forest type, and three distinct phases became evident (phase 1: 1992–1994 treatment effects only, phase 2: 1995–1999 period of invasion by deer and gypsy moths, and phase 3: 2000–2002 post-invasion period). Both oak forest and nonoak forest species increased in the treatment area over the control area. During phase 1, burning encouraged oak seedlings, and thinning reduced competition from nonoak species, suggesting a temporarily successful restoration attempt. The intense gypsy moth browse in phase 2 reduced the number of oak seedlings, creating conditions favorable to nonoak species. The quantity and diversity of seedlings increased as gypsy moths opened the canopy. Deer browsed most species, oak and nonoak, even when deer populations decreased and more species were available. Original treatment effects may have been continuing in phase 3; however, additional years of study are needed.  相似文献

Specificity of olfactory receptor neurones plays an important role in food and host preferences of a species, and may have become conserved or changed in the evolution of polyphagy and oligophagy. We have identified a major type of plant odour receptor neurones responding to the sesquiterpene germacrene D in three species of heliothine moths, the polyphagous Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa armigera and the oligophagous Helicoverpa assulta. The neurones respond with high sensitivity and selectivity to (–)-germacrene D, as demonstrated by screening via gas chromatography with numerous mixtures of plant volatiles. Germacrene D was present in both host and non-host plants, but only in half of the tested species. The specificity of the neurones was similar in the three species, as shown by the "secondary" responses to a few other sesquiterpenes. The effect of (–)-germacrene D was about ten times stronger than that of the (+)-enantiomer, which again was about ten times stronger than that of (–)--ylangene. Weaker effects were obtained for (+)--ylangene, (+)--copaene, -copaene and two unidentified sesquiterpenes. Patterns of common recolonization routes from glacial refugia to Central Europe during the Pleistocene are generalized to paradigms of postglacial recolonization in Europe. Recent studies indicate, however, that the actual phylogeographic history of many species might be more complex and cannot be simplified to generalized patterns. Burnet moths of the Zygaena transalpina complex represent a group of closely related taxa, which are considered as a typical example for these generalized patterns. At present, three groups are recognized that are assumed to have spread from three classical refugia in Western Europe, Italy and the Balkans to Central Europe. Here, we re‐investigate their phylogeography using a combined molecular and morphometric approach. Phylogenetic and nested clade phylogeographic analyses of 476 samples from 55 localities taken from Southern and Central Europe reveal that the Zygaena transalpina complex consists of three distinct haplotype clusters, which geographically roughly correspond to possible refugia in Western Europe, Italy and the Balkans. A synthesis of the data with a geometric morphometry dataset of 425 specimens from 46 localities corroborates this molecular result but differs in several aspects. Important new aspects are multiple refugia of the western ‘hippocrepidis’ branch and micro‐habitats within the Alps of the central ‘transalpina’ branch. Further, our results display a more complex phylogeographic pattern for this species complex, which is not tractable with a rigid, generalized pattern.  相似文献
