Herbivore-induced plant volatiles play important roles in plant–insect and plant–plant interactions. The common evening primrose, Oenothera biennis, is often infested by the flea beetle, Altica oleracea, on which the predatory blue shield bug, Zicrona caerulea, is usually found. This observation suggests that the predatory bug can discriminate infested plants from intact ones to locate its prey. In this study, l-leucine-derived nitrogen-containing compounds [isovaleronitrile (3-methylbutanenitrile), (E/Z)-isovaleraldoxime and 3-methyl-1-nitrobutane] and some terpenes were identified as a characteristic volatile blend from herbivore-infested O. biennis leaves by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, chemical synthesis, and incorporation assays using deuterium-labeled l-leucine. Volatile emission was also elicited by exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA), but not by mechanical damage. l-Leucine accumulated temporarily in O. biennis leaves after MeJA treatment prior to isovaleronitrile emission. Behavioral assays revealed that Z. caerulea showed a strong preference for herbivore-infested leaves, their volatiles, and isovaleronitrile in laboratory conditions.  相似文献

Monostroma angicava and Protomonostroma undulatum are monostromatic green benthic algae (Ulvophyceae), which grow together in the same intertidal habitat of Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, during the spring season. Commonly, both species have a single chloroplast with one pyrenoid per cell. The parietal chloroplast is located on the periphery of the thallus in both species, although the location of the chloroplast differs in the two. In M. angicava , the chloroplast was observed to be arranged on one‐side of the thallus surface, whereas, in P. undulatum , it was dispersed and randomly located on either side of the thallus or on the lateral face. The density of chlorophylls (Chls) assessed from the absorption spectra of the thallus and its solvent extract was higher in M. angicava , which appeared dark‐green in color, than in the light‐green colored P. undulatum . The maximum photosynthetic rate per thallus area (μmol O2 m?2 s?1) was higher in M. angicava , whereas, per total chlorophyll content (μmol O2 g Chl a + Chl b ?1 s?1) was higher in P. undulatum . Both species showed similar efficiency of photosynthesis at light‐limiting conditions. The efficiency of light absorption by photosystem II (PSII ) in P. undulatum was higher than M. angicava , whereas the photoprotective response was higher in M. angicava . This indicates that more energy is utilized in M. angicava to protect its PSII due to the chloroplast position, which has more direct exposure to light and, therefore, lowers the efficiency of light absorption by PSII . The higher density of chlorophylls in M. angicava could explain higher photosynthesis per thallus area, whereas, higher efficiency of light absorption by PSII in P. undulatum could explain higher photosynthesis per total chlorophyll content. The differences in light absorption efficiency and quantum efficiency of PSII might be an important ecological strategy in these two species for their coexistence in the intertidal area.  相似文献

我国热带地区是外来入侵物种发生与危害的重灾区,近年来外来有害昆虫入侵所引发的生物灾害及生态安全问题日趋严峻。在海南省、广东省、广西壮族自治区、云南省、福建省外来入侵昆虫的调查结果及文献资料的基础上,整理分析了中国热带地区外来入侵昆虫的种类构成、分布、原产地及首次发现地。据统计,2000-2014年我国热带地区的外来入侵昆虫种类共计23种,隶属于6目11科,数量最多的为半翅目(13种,56.52%),其中以粉蚧科和粉虱科居多;热带地区的外来入侵昆虫在不同地区之间的物种数量差异较大,其中海南省最多(19种,82.61%),其后依次为广东省(16种,69.57%)、云南省(14种,60.87%)、广西壮族自治区(12种,52.17%),而福建省最少(9种,占39.13%);在入侵我国热带地区的外来有害昆虫中,原产于亚洲、北美洲的种类最多均为6种,占26.09%,南美洲占21.74%,而从非洲、大洋洲、欧洲传入的分别占8.70%、4.35%、4.35%;外来入侵昆虫的首次发现地位于广东省的有9种,占39.13%,出现在海南省和云南省的各占30.43%、21.74%,出现在广西壮族自治区的为8.70%。阐明我国热带地区外来有害昆虫的种类特征及入侵现状,可为该地区外来入侵昆虫的监测与防控提供一定的依据。  相似文献

Amplified genes in many human cancer cells usually localize at the extrachromosomal double minutes (DMs). In the present study, we show that multiple DMs in the human colorectal tumor COLO 320DM line replicated semisynchronously during the early S phase. On the other hand, during longer passage of the cells with DMs, cells with the amplified genes at the chromosomal homogeneously staining region (HSR) generally dominate the population. We currently report that HSR was composed of a tandem array of DM-derived sequences, which was shown using a unique DM-painting probe. Nevertheless, we found that HSR was replicated much later during the S phase, unless the amplified c-myc genes were expressed almost equally from DMs and HSR. Therefore, this provided a novel instance in which the cytogenetic localization affected replication timing without alteration of expression. Furthermore, we unexpectedly found that HSR had a distinctive band structure with respect to replication timing. The replication band structure was usually associated with the chromosomal G/R bands; however, HSR was homogeneous in the G/R band and in the distribution of highly repetitive sequences. We discuss the mechanism by which the replication band may arise, in relation to the folding of chromatin inside the nucleus.  相似文献

Pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L.) were used as materials to test the timings and compartments of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) triggered by wounding and exogenous jasmonic acid (JA). The results showed that H2O2 could be systemically induced by wounding and exogenous JA. H2O2 increased within 1 h and reached the peak 3–5 h after wounding in either the wounded leaves or the unwounded leaves adjacent to the wounded ones and the inferior leaves far from the wounded ones. After this, H2O2 decreased and recovered to the control level 12 h after wounding. The activities of antioxidant enzymes, however, were rapidly increased by wounding. Diphenylene iodonium (DPI), an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, could significantly inhibit H2O2 burst that was mediated by wounding and exogenous JA. Assay of H2O2 subcellular location showed that H2O2 in response to wounding and exogenous JA was predominantly accumulated in plasma membrane, cell wall and apoplasmic space. Numerous JA (gold particles) was found via immunogold electron microscopy to be located in cell wall and phloem zones of mesophyll cell after wounding.  相似文献

1. The mating system of Mediterranean Fruit Flies ( Ceratitis capitata , Diptera: Tephritidae) is based on male leks which form within the canopies of certain trees. In this study the following hypotheses are tested: (a) fly location depends on microclimate and illumination and (b) larger and heavier males occupy preferred locations in leks. Accordingly, systematic quantitative observations of diel three-dimensional (3-D) locations of lekking C. capitata males were performed in field and field cage studies.
2. Fly locations were found to vary significantly during the activity hours.
3. Medflies were generally found calling from highest and most exterior locations during early morning and late afternoon hours. During the hottest hours (1200–1500) flies occupied lower locations within the tree canopy, and interior locations from 1000 to 1500.
4. Fly location (from 1000 to 1700) was correlated with the azimuth of the sun. However, the mean azimuth range of fly location was limited to 85° (59·45°–143·94°).
5. Both in the field and in the field cage the temperature, relative humidity and light intensity beneath the leaves on which the males perched were closer to the microclimate beneath fully shaded leaves than to microclimates beneath leaves exposed to direct sunlight.
6. It is concluded that male medflies occupy locations which confer suitable microclimates for calling and copulating, and suitable 3-D locations within the canopy which provide protection from predators, wind, direct sunlight and water loss.  相似文献

A new chloramphenicol resistance gene from Salmonella typhimurium DT104, designated floR, also conferring resistance to florfenicol, was characterized. Sequence analysis of the deduced FloR protein suggested that it belongs to the 12-TMS (transmembrane segments) multidrug efflux pumps family. The floR gene, and the downstream sequenced tetR and tetA tetracycline resistance genes, were surrounded by two class 1 integrons. The first one contained the resistance gene aadA2 and a deleted sulI resistance gene. The second one contained the beta-lactamase gene pse1 and a complete sulI gene. Thus, the floR gene is included in a multiresistance locus of at least 12.5 kb. Its particular organization and chromosomal location could be involved in the antibioresistance pattern stability of the DT104 Salmonella typhimurium strains.  相似文献

We investigate the use of landforms at different scales by males of the territorial nymphalid butterfly Inachis io (Linnaeus, 1758) under different weather conditions. They are known to use landforms at two different scales including macroscale, such as valley sides, tops of slopes and wood edges, and mini-landforms, such as molehills produced by the burrowing animal Talpa europaea Linnaeus (Linnaeus, 1758). Here, we demonstrate that they exploit microscale features on the molehills. The butterfly shifts its position in the landscape in relation to changing conditions by flying, and at the microscale, by walking. The links between thermoregulatory behavior and site selection indicate that perches are adopted to maintain body heat in the cool spring conditions when territories are established. Mini-landforms such as the molehills are adopted for their potential shelter and warmth in relation to ambient conditions; microsite selection typically includes warm niches on molehills, such as sunny slopes, sheltered margins and depressions. Shelter is adopted regardless of reduced visibility for territorial males. The importance of non-consumable (mate location) resources at different spatial scales is discussed in the context of habitat and the matrix.  相似文献

Subterranean termites construct underground tunnels, tens to hundreds of meters in length, in order to search for and transport resources. Diverse soil conditions surrounding the tunnels, such as soil pores and differing moisture concentrations, may cause different sized- and shaped-irregularities in the tunnels. To understand how individual termites respond to the irregularities, the present study monitored the movement of termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, in artificially excavated tunnels with rectangular irregularities of varying sizes in two-dimensional sand substrates. Termites tunneled at some of the irregularities and not at the others. The tunneling or non-tunneling behavior resulted from four different responses. The non-tunneling response may result from a behavioral adaptation that allows termites to avoid wasting energy that may be used in foraging.  相似文献
