The canopy surface is an undulating surface that follows the irregular contours of the upper tree crowns and defines the inner and the outer limits of the forest volume. In French Guiana, the height of the canopy surface was surveyed in both a primary and a 20-years old clear-felled secondary forest plot. The topographic surface was displayed in a three-dimensional mesh, where X and Y are horizontal co-ordinates, and Z is the canopy height measured from the ground with an optical telemeter. The statistical dispersion of Z-data, and the spatial tree height variations, are interpreted at different levels of ecosystem organisation, from forest type (primary or secondary forest) to the trees themselves, following the folded forest model theory (Oldeman 1992, 1994). The vertical growth of trees creates a convex pattern in the relief of canopy surface, whereas gaps make concavities which delimit impact of perturbation on the forest structure. These events are either the result of the dynamic of single trees (emergent and decayed trees), or arise from the dynamic of a group of trees working together (group of emergent trees or complex gaps). At the plot scale, the elementary events, convexities and concavities, are gathered on similar topo-sequences, and form canopy units either higher or lower than the average canopy height. This study suggests that the topography of the canopy surface is defined by a complex nested system from trees, to groups of trees, to canopy units, within a delimited floristic and physical environment.  相似文献

Seed mass is considered to be an important attribute for the establishment success of plant species being linked with their seed production, establishment, and survival. This meta-analysis shows that seed mass is also closely correlated to growth-related species attributes of the established phase of rain forest tree species, and that the strength of this relationship varies with light conditions. Seed mass is an especially good predictor of species traits under high-light conditions, when the species attain their full growth potential. At high irradiance (>20% of full light) seed mass is negatively correlated with RGR, NAR, LAR, SLA and LMF. At low irradiance (<5% of full light), seed mass is only negatively correlated with LAR and SLA. Correlations between seed mass and morphological traits are therefore strongest at low irradiance where light interception is important. Conversely, correlations between seed mass and a physiological trait are strongest at high irradiance, where maximisation of photosynthetic rates is important. The strength of the correlation between growth parameters and seed mass declines over time, and disappears after 1–4 years. Seed mass appears to be a good proxy for the shade tolerance of tropical tree species, especially at the younger stages of the life cycle.  相似文献

With the aim of determining what kind of landscape mosaics might sustainmaximum diversity and minimum species loss, dung beetles were sampled withbaited pitfall traps to compare species richness and species composition in atract of continuous forest, forest fragments and a habitat island consisting ofa mosaic of forest and arboreal crops in Los Tuxtlas, southern Mexico. Wecaptured 7332 dung beetles representing 33 species. Similar numbers of specieswere captured in the three habitats. However, 56% of individuals were capturedin the continuous forest, 29% in the mosaic habitat and 15% in the forestfragments. Eight species (Canthon femoralis,Copris laeviceps, Canthidium centrale,Onthophagus batesi, Deltochilumpseudoparile, O. rhinolophus, Canthonviridis vazquezae and Dichotomius satanus) accounted for 90% of thecaptures, but their relative dominance varied among habitats. A clear trend wasevident in the number of dung beetles captured in the dung processing guilds(rollers/tunnelers) as well as in the diurnal and nocturnal guilds, withcaptures decreasing from the continuous forest to the mosaic habitat to theforest fragments. A similar trend was detected in detection rates for medium andsmall size dung producing mammals. Species richness of forest fragments andmosaic habitat did not differ from that found in the continuous forest, butthese habitats differ significantly in species richness from isolated shaded andunshaded plantations, linear strips of vegetation, the forest–pasture edge andpastures according to rarefaction analysis. The co-occurrence of the continuousforest, the mosaic habitat and the cluster of forest fragments in closeproximity seems to be preserving a diverse assemblage of dung beetle species inthe local landscape.  相似文献

 本文通过对海南岛尖峰岭地区热带植被随环境条件递变而变化的分析,反映出在一较短的水平距离内植被变化的多样性,并通过群落生态学方法的分析,说明尖峰岭地区的植被在种类组成、多样性、群落外貌等方面都具有较典型的热带性质,但在群落的结构方面则比典型的热带雨林逊色,说明它是地处热带北缘和在季风气候影响下的必然结果。用重要值方法来描述热带植物群落,其结果较为理想。研究该地区热带植被的特点,对认识、了解我国的热带植被和经营热带林等方面,提供了一些理论依据。  相似文献

Primate censuses were conducted in a mosaic of colonizing (two locations) and old-growth forests using line transect methods at the Ngogo study site, Kibale National Park, Uganda. Black and white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) were encountered more frequently in the colonizing forests than in the old growth forest, while chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were encountered more frequently in the old growth forest than in colonizing forests. Although not significant, results suggest that blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) frequented colonizing forests more often than old growth forest. The encounter rates of mangabey (Lophocebus albigena), and redtail (Cercopithecus ascanius) groups were ambiguous with their density being higher in some colonizing forests but not others as compared to old-growth forest. No significant differences were detected for baboons (Papio anubis), Lhoests (Cercopithecus lhoesti), and red colobus monkeys (Piliocolobus tephroscales). The conversion of forests to farmland is one of the major problems encountered in primate conservation. This study shows that secondary forests replacing anthropogenic grasslands have the potential of supporting some primate species such as black and white colobus, redtail monkeys, and possibly blue monkeys. Therefore, such areas should not be given up but should be conserved for the benefit of primates that can survive in secondary forests; as the forests mature further, primate species that are adapted to old growth forest will colonize the area provided there is a nearby source.  相似文献

The structural characteristics of several dithiocarbamates (DTCs) [N-p-methylbenzyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate (MBGD), N-benzyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate (BGD), N-p-hydroxymethylbenzyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate (HBGD) and N-p-carboxybenzyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate (CBGD)] that induce in vivo mobilization of cadmium (Cd) were examined in mice. The renal and hepatic contents of Cd were lower in the treatments with Cd-DTC combinations than in that with Cd alone. Probenecid pretreatment decreased the renal content of Cd in Cd-MBGD and Cd-BGD treated mice, but it increased the renal content of Cd and decreased the urinary excretion of the metal in Cd-HBGD and Cd-CBGD treated mice. Furthermore, although ureter-ligation did not affect the renal content of Cd in Cd-MBGD and Cd-BGD treated mice, it increased the renal content of Cd in Cd-HBGD and Cd-CBGD treated mice. These findings suggest that Cd-MBGD and Cd-BGD complexes are taken up into the tubular cells by an organic anion transport system through the basolateral membrane, whereas Cd-HBGD and Cd-CBGD complexes are secreted to the tubular lumen by an organic anion transport system through the brush border membrane. The results of probenecid pretreatment also led us to assume that the hepatic transport of these four Cd-DTC complexes is regulated, at least in part, by a probenecid-sensitive organic anion transport system.  相似文献

Rains at the end of the dry season can trigger increases in emissions of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide from forest and pasture soils in the Amazon Basin. The relative importance of the rain-stimulated emissions in the seasonal and annual budgets of these nitrogen gases for forests and pastures in the western Amazon is not well established. We measured soil emissions of NO and N2O from a forest and two pastures, 11 and 26 years old, after a simulated rain event. Wetting the soil resulted in very small pulses of NO or N2O from forest soils and no significant NO or N2O pulses from the pastures. We estimated that in the forest, the amounts of each gas emitted from pulses during the dry to wet transition period represented 3.4% of the NO and 1.8% of the N2O dry-season emissions, but amounted to less than 2% of the annual emissions of either gas. Total N oxide emissions of 5.6 kg N/ha/yr from the forest were nearly evenly divided between NO (42%) and N2O (58%). The emissions of NO were evenly distributed over the wet and dry seasons, while over 84% N2O fluxes occurred during the wet season.  相似文献

Summary The growth responses of seedlings of Amphipterygium adstringens, Caesalpinia eriostachys, and C. platyloba, species associated with undisturbed parts of the tropical deciduous forest in México, and Apoplanesia paniculata and Heliocarpus pallidus, two gap-requiring pioneer species, were determined under contrasting light conditions in a growth chamber experiment. The high (400 mol m–2 s–1) and low (80 mol m–2 s–1) light treatments correspond to the light available in a medium size gap and underneath the vegetation canopy in the deciduous forest during the rainy season, respectively. Following four destructive harvests the biomass production, relative growth rate, root/shoot ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilation rate, leaf area ratio and light dependency were determined for all species. In the high light treatment all species achieved higher relative growth rates and net assimilation rates than when growing at low light intensity. However, the two pioneer species showed the highest light dependency and were the species more affected by the low light treatment in biomass production. The two Caesalpinia species showed similar growth responses, but C. platyloba was the most shade tolerant species. Plastic adjustments in terms of the specific leaf area were more evident in the two pioneer species.  相似文献

Summary Carbon isotope ratios were used to survey the distribution of photosynthetic pathways among taxa, the relationship between photosynthetic pathway and habitat light levels, and the relationship between intercellular CO2 levels of C3 plants and habitat light levels within a subtropical monsoon forest in southern China. Of 128 species, most (94) possessed the C3 photosynthetic pathway; 33 species possessed the C4 pathway and all of these were restricted to high light locations. There was one epiphytic CAM species. The C3 species were classified as occurring in open, intermediate, and closed canopy sites. Tropical dry forest is the most endangered major vegetation type in the New Caledonia biodiversity hotspot. Vegetation surveys following a transect method used by Gentry were undertaken in two tropical dry forest sites, Ouen-Toro and Pindai, in order to compare species richness, floristic composition, and structure. Pindai contained significantly higher species richness than Ouen-Toro, although there was little difference in forest structure. Tropical dry forest sites in New Caledonia were compared to seven other biodiversity hotspots with tropical dry forest where Gentry's transect method was employed. New Caledonia and other tropical dry forests on islands contain significantly lower species richness than mainland tropical dry forests in biodiversity hotspots. However, New Caledonia contained the highest number of threatened species based on IUCN global conservation categories. Tropical dry forest in New Caledonia appears to be the world's most endangered tropical dry forest based on the extent of forest, number of reserves, and threatened species. Management of tropical dry forests on private and community lands is absolutely imperative to the long-term persistence of this ecosystem.  相似文献
