A dynamic substance‐flow model is developed to characterize the stocks and flows of cement utilized during the 20th century in the United States, using the generic cement life cycle as a systems boundary. The motivation for estimating historical inventories of cement stocks and flows is to provide accurate estimates of contemporary cement in‐use stocks in U.S. infrastructure and future discards to relevant stakeholders in U.S. infrastructure, such as the federal and state highway administrators, departments of transportation, public and private utilities, and the construction and cement industries. Such information will assist in planning future rehabilitation projects and better life cycle management of infrastructure systems. In the present policy environment of climate negotiations, estimates of in‐use cement infrastructure can provide insights about to what extent built environment can act as a carbon sink over its lifetime. The rate of addition of new stock, its composition, and the repair of existing stock are key determinants of infrastructure sustainability. Based upon a probability of failure approach, a dynamic stock and flow model was developed utilizing three statistical lifetime distributions—Weibull, gamma, and lognormal—for each cement end‐use. The model‐derived estimate of the “in‐use” cement stocks in the United States is in the range of 4.2 to 4.4 billion metric tons (gigatonnes, Gt). This indicates that 82% to 87% of cement utilized during the last century is still in use. On a per capita basis, this is equivalent to 14.3 to 15.0 tonnes of in‐use cement stock per person. Ptomascopus morio displays simpler parental care than Nicrophorus species. The effects of carcass size and clutch number on clutch size in P. morio were examined. Clutch size was related to carcass size. There was a negative correlation between number of clutch and clutch size for most sizes of carcass. Longevity of females was shorter when the carcass size was larger, such that total lifetime fecundity did not differ among carcasses of different sizes. The clutch size of P. morio was larger than that of Nicrophorus quadripunctatus. The clutch size of P. morio declined rapidly with repeated clutch production, but that of N. quadripunctatus was rather constant. This indicates that N. quadripunctatus maintains a more constant clutch size than P. morio over several reproductive attempts, although the former displays more complex parental care. 相似文献

The hypothesis that females of socially monogamous species obtain indirect benefits (good or compatible genes) from extra-pair mating behaviour has received enormous attention but much less generally accepted support. Here we ask whether selection for adult survival and fecundity or sexual selection contribute to indirect selection of the extra-pair mating behaviour in socially monogamous coal tits (Periparus ater). We tracked locally recruited individuals with known paternity status through their lives predicting that the extra-pair offspring (EPO) would outperform the within-pair offspring (WPO). No differences between the WPO and EPO recruits were detected in lifespan or age of first reproduction. However, the male WPO had a higher lifetime number of broods and higher lifetime number of social offspring compared with male EPO recruits, while no such differences were evident for female recruits. Male EPO recruits did not compensate for their lower social reproductive success by higher fertilization success within their social pair bonds. Thus, our results do not support the idea that enhanced adult survival, fecundity or within-pair fertilization success are manifestations of the genetic benefits of extra-pair matings. It is shown that all-trans-retinal under model conditions of its excessive accumulation in photoreceptor membranes interacts with amino groups of rhodopsin and lipids, forming at least three distinct fluorophores with fluorescence quantum yield 20–40 times higher than that of free all-trans-retinal. These retinal derivatives are likely precursors of photo- and cytotoxic fluorophores of lipofuscin and in particular of A2E. Spectral characteristics of fluorophores have been described. Picosecond time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy was used to study kinetics of fluorescence decay of both free and bound all-trans-retinal; fluorophores were determined and their lifetimes have been measured. Based on calculations it is shown that the decay kinetics of all-trans-retinal derivatives consists of three components with lifetimes equal to 48, 208, and 900 ps; kinetics of free all-trans-retinal is monoexponential with lifetime of 31 ps. Fish oil was encapsulated by spray-drying into different matrices based on n-octenylsuccinate-derivatised starch (nOSA starch) and carbohydrate blends varying in dextrose equivalent and molecular weight
profile. Based on the development of the hydroperoxide and propanal content upon storage significant differences in the stability
of the microencapsulated oil were observed. With 40 mmol/kg oil the hydroperoxide content after eight weeks of storage at
20 °C and 33% relative humidity was lowest in fish oil encapsulated in a matrix containing nOSA starch and maltose. In contrast,
the lowest stability was observed in fish oil encapsulated in a matrix based on nOSA starch and maltodextrin with a dextrose
equivalent of 18. Physical characteristics like viscosity of the feed emulsion and oil droplet size, which influence drying
behaviour as well as particle characteristics like particle size, density or surface area did not differ and thus cannot explain
the differences in the rate of autoxidation. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy clearly showed distinct differences
in the ortho-positronium lifetime, and thus in the size of free volume elements between the carrier matrices. It is suggested
that as a consequence, the matrices differed in oxygen diffusivity, which must be considered to be a key determinant in autoxidation

eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) contains a MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase)-binding site associated with a major eNOS control element. Purified ERK (extracellular-signal-regulated kinase) phosphorylates eNOS with a stoichiometry of 2–3 phosphates per eNOS monomer. Phosphorylation decreases NO synthesis and cytochrome c reductase activity. Three sites of phosphorylation were detected by MS. All sites matched the SP and TP MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) phosphorylation motif. Ser602 lies at the N-terminal edge of the 42-residue eNOS AI (autoinhibitory) element. The pentabasic MAPK-binding site lies at the opposite end of the AI, and other critical regulatory features are between them. Thr46 and Ser58 are located in a flexible region associated with the N terminus of the oxygenase domain. In contrast with PKC (protein kinase C), phosphorylation by ERK did not significantly interfere with CaM (calmodulin) binding as analysed by optical biosensing. Instead, ERK phosphorylation favours a state in which FMN and FAD are in close association and prevents conformational changes that expose reduced FMN to acceptors. The close associations between control sites in a few regions of the molecule suggest that control of signal generation is modulated by multiple inputs interacting directly on the surface of eNOS via overlapping binding domains and tightly grouped targets. 相似文献

The relationship between body size (hind tibia length), <12 h egg load, wing wear and parasitoid age was used to estimate realised lifetime parasitism of recently dead Gonatocerus ashmeadi collected in a citrus orchard. Under prevailing field conditions and methodology assumptions, it was estimated that female G. ashmeadi lived on average for 183 ± 17 degree-days, parasitised a total of 87 ± 9 Homalodisca vitripennis eggs, and died with 34 ± 5 eggs remaining in the ovaries. Only 17% of dead G. ashmeadi died with no mature eggs suggesting that 83% of G. ashmeadi were not egg limited at time of death. Estimates of realised lifetime parasitism for female G. ashmeadi under prevailing field conditions in July and August in a southern California citrus orchard indicated that time of year had a significant effect on reproductive output. Additionally, live G. ashmeadi captured daily during June through August 2006 had body size, egg load and wing wear recorded to detect possible monthly changes in parasitoid age and egg load. Foraging G. ashmeadi captured alive in June were older and oviposited more eggs in the field compared with August. Only 0.5% of live G. ashmeadi were captured with no mature eggs in their ovaries indicating that the vast majority of live G. ashmeadi were not egg limited. 相似文献

Despite considerable empirical and theoretical work on the individualand population consequences of early development, little isknown about the correlations between early mass and adult sizeor lifetime reproductive success of free-ranging mammals. Usinga 26-year study of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), we examinedhow mass as a lamb and mass gain as a yearling affected adultmass for both sexes, horn length of males and lifetime reproductivesuccess of females at different population densities. Mass asa 3-week-old lamb was either weakly or not correlated withadult mass, horn length of adult males, or the number of lambsweaned over a ewe's lifetime. Weaning mass was correlated withmost of these variables when the number of ewes in the populationwas taken into account. When weaning mass was controlled throughpartial correlation, mass as a yearling was correlated with
adult mass of ewes but not with ewe reproductive success orwith adult mass or horn length of rams. Lamb mass and numberof ewes explained more of the variance in adult characteristicsfor males than for females. Our results suggest that mass gainduring lactation, possibly but not necessarily related to theamount of maternal care received, affects adult mass and reproductive
success. Females appear better able than males to compensatefor poor early development, likely by postponing their firstreproduction.
