The Truckee River Basin, located on the Nevada-California border, is an area of extreme hydrologic variability, being subject to both prolonged multi-decadal droughts and devastating floods; however, due to the brief instrumental record, understanding of the full range of this variability is limited. To assist local water managers assess the post-2000 drought in the context of historic droughts, this study revisits the first tree-ring reconstruction of Truckee River runoff: Hardman and Reil (1936). Incorporating their original 1930s tree cores as well as newly sampled material, three new site chronologies were developed and combined with other regional chronologies to produce a 1491–2003 reconstruction of Truckee River streamflow, an over 400-year extension of the instrumental record and 230 years longer than the previous reconstruction, providing new insights into the basin’s natural variability. In addition to evidence of extended droughts and extreme high streamflow years, this reconstruction shows a marked hydroclimatic shift centered around the 1850s. Prior to then, the Truckee River experienced decadal to multi-decadal periods of higher than average streamflow; subsequently, these periods have been decreasing in length with only two instances above three consecutive years of high streamflow since 1900. Whether this represents fundamental shift to a new hydroclimatic regime remains unclear. However, as global temperatures continue to rise, fewer long-term high streamflow episodes may have lasting impacts on water availability in the basin, raising the question further of whether the post-2000 drought is a new megadrought or a sign of aridification. 相似文献

The prediction of RNA secondary structure including pseudoknots remains a challenge due to the intractable computation of
the sequence conformation from nucleotide interactions under free energy models. Optimal algorithms often assume a restricted
class for the predicted RNA structures and yet still require a high-degree polynomial time complexity, which is too expensive
to use. Heuristic methods may yield time-efficient algorithms but they do not guarantee optimality of the predicted structure.
This paper introduces a new and efficient algorithm for the prediction of RNA structure with pseudoknots for which the structure
is not restricted. Novel prediction techniques are developed based on graph tree decomposition. In particular, based on a
simplified energy model, stem overlapping relationships are defined with a graph, in which a specialized maximum independent
set corresponds to the desired optimal structure. Such a graph is tree decomposable; dynamic programming over a tree decomposition
of the graph leads to an efficient optimal algorithm. The final structure predictions are then based on re-ranking a list
of suboptimal structures under a more comprehensive free energy model. The new algorithm is evaluated on a large number of
RNA sequence sets taken from diverse resources. It demonstrates overall sensitivity and specificity that outperforms or is
comparable with those of previous optimal and heuristic algorithms yet it requires significantly less time than the compared
optimal algorithms.

The resistance to experimental, highly frequent disturbance has been analysed in three congeneric, strong-resprouter species
(Erica australis, E. scoparia and E. arborea) that co-occur in heath-dominated communities of the northern side of the Strait of Gibraltar, southern Spain. To do so,
mature individuals of the three species from a long undisturbed location were clipped at the ground level every sixth month
during two years. The relationship between the resprouted biomass dry weight (as indicative of the resprouting vigour) and
the upper surface area of the lignotuber along the experiment was established separately for each species at each clipping
event by means of linear regressions analysis. The resprouting vigour of the three species was compared by means of independent
one-way ANOVAs within each clipping event. Resprouting vigour decreased after recurrent clippings in the three species. Nevertheless,
significant differences between species in this loss of resprouting vigour were detected, being E. scoparia the most resistant to the experimental, highly frequent clipping. It is concluded that experimental levels of recurrent disturbance
may help to find out differences in resilience within similar (taxonomically, morfologically and/or ecologically), strong-resprouter
plant species. Considering the history of forestry management in the nothern side of the Strait of Gibraltar, differences
in this regard between the three Erica species may contribute to explain their somewhat segregated ecological distribution in this region. 相似文献

Information on the spatial distribution of past vegetation on local, regional and global scales is increasingly used within
climate modelling, nature conservancy and archaeology. It is possible to obtain such information from fossil pollen records
in lakes and bogs using the landscape reconstruction algorithm (LRA) and its two models, REVEALS and LOVE. These models assume
that reliable pollen productivity estimates (PPEs) are available for the plant taxa involved in the quantitative reconstructions
of past vegetation, and that PPEs are constant through time. This paper presents and discusses the PPEs for 15 tree and 18
herb taxa obtained in nine study areas of Europe. Observed differences in PPEs between regions may be explained by methodological
issues and environmental variables, of which climate and related factors such as reproduction strategies and growth forms
appear to be the most important. An evaluation of the PPEs at hand so far suggests that they can be used in modelling applications
and quantitative reconstructions of past vegetation, provided that consideration of past environmental variability within
the region is used to inform selection of PPEs, and bearing in mind that PPEs might have changed through time as a response
to climate change. Application of a range of possible PPEs will allow a better evaluation of the results. 相似文献

采用3种常见的生态位宽度和生态位重叠计测公式,以外来种无瓣海桑扩散区的秋茄+桐花树群落演替系列作为资源轴,定量计测了几种红树植物的生态位宽度和重叠值.结果表明,各树种生态位宽度值排序为桐花树(3.8357)>秋茄(3.3421)>木榄(3.3180)>白骨壤(3.0975)>无瓣海桑(2.9137)>海桑(2.5724)>角果木(1.8523)>红海榄(1.6897)>海莲(1.0000),很好地表征了其生态适应性和分布幅度.各树种重叠值中,以秋茄、桐花树、木榄、白骨壤之间的生态位重叠较大,表明其间存在较强的资源利用性竞争.无瓣海桑生态位宽度处于中等程度,与中低潮滩红树植物海桑、桐花树、秋茄和白骨壤的重叠值相对较高,与红海榄、木榄有中度重叠,与角果木有少量重叠,与海莲完全没有重叠. 相似文献

目的调查滇西亚种树鼩体外寄生虫的自然感染状况,为建立树鼩质量控制标准提供依据。方法对野生的滇西亚种树鼩和自繁F1代树鼩各60只分别用尸检法和活体法检测,随即采用拔毛或用透明胶带粘取腋下、耳根、腹股沟、肛门附近等处的毛发制片,置于体视镜和显微镜下观察虫体和虫卵。结果野生滇西亚种树鼩和自繁F1代树鼩体外寄生虫自然感染率分别为:虱子25%/6%、蚤5%/0、蜱1.6%/0、水蛭1.6%/0、虱子和蚤混合感染1.6%/0。结论野生树鼩体外寄生虫的自然感染多为虱子和蚤,其次还有蝉、水蛭,总感染率明显高于自繁F1代。使用灭虱灵对于驱除树鼩体外寄生虫具有较好的疗效。 相似文献

We studied forest structure, composition and tree species diversity of eight plots in an environmental matrix of four altitudes (700, 1700, 2700 and 3100 m) and two types of geological substrates (ultrabasic and non-ultrabasic rocks) on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo. On both substrate series, forest stature, mean leaf area and tree species diversity (both 4.8 cm and 10 cm diameter at breast height [dbh]) decreased with altitude. The two forests on the different substrate series were similar at 700 m in structure, generic and familial composition and tree species diversity, but became dissimilar with increasing altitude. The decline in stature with altitude was steeper on the ultrabasic substrates than on the non-ultrabasic substrates, and tree species diversity was generally lower on ultrabasic substrates than on non-ultrabasic substrates at 1700 m. The forests on non-ultrabasic substrates at higher altitudes and those on ultrabasic substrates at the lower altitudes were similar in dbh versus tree height allometry, mean leaf area, and generic and familial composition at 1700 m. These contrasting patterns in forest structure and composition between the two substrate series suggested that altitudinal change was compressed on the ultrabasic substrates compared to the non-ultrabasic substrates. Tree species diversity was correlated with maximum tree height and estimated aboveground biomass, but was not with basal area, among the eight study sites. We suggest that forests with higher tree species diversity are characterized by greater biomass allocation to height growth relative to trunk diameter growth under more productive environment than forests with lower tree species diversity. 相似文献

Tree species diversity was measured in a network of very small galleryforests within the Mountain Pine Ridge savanna in Belize. Research focussed onforest patches smaller than 1 ha in size (micro-forests) and linearstrips of trees along creeks lacking interior core zones with low understoreylight levels (tree thickets). Twenty-five micro-forests and 51 tree thicketsites were sampled throughout the savanna. A total of 144 morphospecies 5cm dbh (106 in micro-forests and 117 in tree thickets) werefound, which represents 1/5 of the approximately 700 native tree species in Belize.Most (85.3%) of the species encountered are typically found in tropical rainforests and few are restricted to savanna or riparian environments. Speciesaccumulated at a much faster rate in micro-forests than in tree thickets. Onlyone species, the palm Acoelorraphe wrightii, was extremelyabundant, accounting for almost 30% of all stems. Many of the species werepresent in very low densities: 19% of all species found in micro-forests and 42%of those found in tree thickets had on average one or fewer stems per hectare. Alarge proportion of species were also found infrequently across the landscape,being present in only 36% of micro-forests and at 52% of tree thicket sites. Theresults indicate that networks of very small forest patches can contain highnumbers of species and could therefore contribute to the maintenance of regionalbiodiversity. 相似文献
