Cerebral vasospasm (CVS) is a life-threatening condition that occurs in a large proportion of those affected by subarachnoid haemorrhage and stroke. CVS manifests itself as the progressive narrowing of intracranial arteries. It is usually diagnosed using Doppler ultrasound, which quantifies blood velocity changes in the affected vessels, but has low sensitivity when CVS affects the peripheral vasculature. The aim of this study was to identify alternative biomarkers that could be used to diagnose CVS. We used a 1D modelling approach to describe the properties of pulse waves that propagate through the cardiovascular system, which allowed the effects of different types of vasospasm on waveforms to be characterised at several locations within a simulated cerebral network. A sensitivity analysis empowered by the use of a Gaussian process statistical emulator was used to identify waveform features that may have strong correlations with vasospasm. We showed that the minimum rate of velocity change can be much more effective than blood velocity for stratifying typical manifestations of vasospasm and its progression. The results and methodology of this study have the potential not only to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of vasospasm, but also to be used in the diagnosis of many other cardiovascular diseases where cardiovascular waves can be decoded to provide disease characterisation.  相似文献

We examined whether baPWV could be affected by pork collagen peptide (CP) ingestion. Seventy subjects were randomized into two groups (2.5 g/day CP and 2.5 g/day placebo). A significant reduction in baPWV was observed in the CP group compared to the placebo group. This study demonstrated that pork CP may contribute to the prevention of atherosclerosis in elderly.  相似文献

This study focused on understanding the termite traveling behavior. Artificial tunnels with different curvatures and base surface roughness were constructed. Each tunnel was 50 mm in length, with widths of W (W = 2, 3, or 4 mm). The distance between the two ends of the tunnel was D (D = 20, 30, 40, or 50 mm). A higher value of D means a lower curvature. The roughness, R (R = 60, 120, 240 and ∞), was generated by uniformly sanding the substrate with a sanding machine. A higher R value means a finer base surface. The symbol ∞ represents a smooth surface. Time (τ) taken by a termite to pass through the tunnel was measured. τ was longer in tunnels with a smooth surface compared with the tunnels with a rough surface. When W = 2, there was no effect of the roughness on speed. This is because the narrow tunnel width diluted the effects of the smoothness of the surface. When W = 3, τ was statistically shorter for R = 240, than for R = 60 and 120. This suggests that an appropriate surface roughness could positively contribute to the traveling speed.  相似文献

This paper comments on the article “Retinal pulse wave velocity measurement using spectral‐domain optical coherence tomography” by Qian Li et al. The authors propose a method to determine the pulse wave velocity in retinal arteries and veins. This method should enable a noninvasive determination of biomechanical properties of the vessel network, particularly the elasticity of the vessel walls. Although the observations the authors made might seem reasonable at first glance, they are in fact highly surprising and contradictory to theoretical predictions and previously published results.  相似文献

Optical‐resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR‐PAM) has proven useful for anatomical and functional imaging with high spatial resolutions. However, the coherent signal generation and the desired reflection‐mode detection in OR‐PAM can result in a limited detectability of features aligned with the acoustic axis (ie, vertical structures). Here, we investigated the limited‐view phenomenon in OR‐PAM by simulating the generation and propagation of the acoustic pressure waves and determined the key optical parameters affecting the visibility of vertical structures. Proof‐of‐concept numerical experiments were performed with different illumination angles, optical foci and numerical apertures (NA) of the objective lens. The results collectively show that an NA of 0.3 can readily improve the visibility of vertical structures in a typical reflection‐mode OR‐PAM system. This conclusion was confirmed by numerical simulations on the cortical blood vessels in a mouse brain and by experiments in a suture‐cross phantom and in a mouse brain in vivo.   相似文献

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC-MY) are pacemakers that generate and propagate electrical slow waves in gastrointestinal (GI) muscles. Slow waves appear to be generated by the release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores and activation of Ca2+-activated Cl channels (Ano1). Conduction of slow waves to smooth muscle cells coordinates rhythmic contractions. Mitochondrial Ca2+ handling is currently thought to be critical for ICC pacemaking. Protonophores, inhibitors of the electron transport chain (FCCP, CCCP or antimycin) or mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchange blockers inhibited slow waves in several GI muscles. Here we utilized Ca2+ imaging of ICC in small intestinal muscles in situ to determine the effects of mitochondrial drugs on Ca2+ transients in ICC. Muscles were obtained from mice expressing a genetically encoded Ca2+ indicator (GCaMP3) in ICC. FCCP, CCCP, antimycin, a uniporter blocker, Ru360, and a mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchange inhibitor, CGP-37157 inhibited Ca2+ transients in ICC-MY. Effects were not due to depletion of ATP, as oligomycin did not affect Ca2+ transients. Patch-clamp experiments were performed to test the effects of the mitochondrial drugs on key pacemaker conductances, Ano1 and T-type Ca2+ (CaV3.2), in HEK293 cells. Antimycin blocked Ano1 and reduced CaV3.2 currents. CCCP blocked CaV3.2 current but did not affect Ano1 current. Ano1 and Cav3.2 currents were inhibited by CGP-37157. Inhibitory effects of mitochondrial drugs on slow waves and Ca2+ signalling in ICC can be explained by direct antagonism of key pacemaker conductances in ICC that generate and propagate slow waves. A direct obligatory role for mitochondria in pacemaker activity is therefore questionable.  相似文献

The calcium wave subsequent to fertilization of the egg is analyzed interms of an electrical equivalent circuit. The circuit consists of aswitch, capacitor, an inductor, and a resistor. The switch symbolizes aseries of chemical reactions initiated by the sperm the lead to thedevelopment of the calcium wave. Its closure signifies the onset of thecalcium wave. The capacitor and inductor represent the endoplasmicreticulum. The capacitive component of the endoplasmic reticulum controlsthe release of calcium ions while the inductive component regulates thesequestration of clacium ions. The resistor represents the inductor andcytoplasm and has very low resistance. The analysis of the circuit showsthat the period of the calcium oscillations is proportional to the size ofthe egg.
