A PCR-based fingerprinting technique based on amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) is used to screen symbiotic fungi of the fungus-growing ant Cyphomyrmex minutus for genetic differences. AFLP fingerprints reveal several fungal ‘types’ that (a) represent distinct clones propagated vegetatively by the ant, or (b) correspond to free-living fungi that may be acquired by the ant. Fungal types identified by AFLP fingerprints correspond to vegetative-compatibility groups established previously, suggesting that vegetative compatibility can be used as a crude indicator of genetic differences between fungi of C. minutus.  相似文献

The interspawning interval of female sand gobies, Pomatoschistusminutus, a batch-spawning fish with paternal care, was significantlyshorter when the fish were fed daily than when they were fedevery fourth day. The incubation time of males was not affectedby feeding, nor was the interbrood interval Males have an equalor higher potential reproductive rate than females. As femalesreproduce more slowly when food is scarce than when it is abundant, and males do not, the difference between the sexes in potentialreproductive rate increases when there is food shortage. Becauseof this difference, both male bias in operational sex ratioand intensity in male-male competition for mates are predictedto increase as food availability decreases. Furthermore, a tradeoffbetween current and future reproduction is demonstrated to operateonly when resources are limited, because the correlation betweenegg number of the first and second clutch was positive amonghigh-food females but negative among low-food females. The numberof eggs per female clutch did, however, not differ between treatmentsin first or second dutch. I conclude that operational sex ratioand sexual selection are expected to vary within and betweensand goby populations in accordance with prey availability  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A new species of myxosporean of the genus Kudoa was found in the muscle tissues of Pamatoschistus minutus (Pallas, 1770), a migratory fish species from the Mediterranean Sea. Previously this Kudoa species had been observed in Pomatoschistus microps (Krøyer, 1838), a sedentary species of the Vaccarés lagoon system. the parasite caused rapid myoliquefaction of the affected muscles within one hour after host death. Using both light and electron microscopy, whitish, longitudinal, spindle-shaped bodies, 2-5 mm long and 1-2 mm wide, were found in the caudal peduncle or in muscle tissues of the abdominal wall. Spore length, width, and thickness (n = 30) ranged between 4.4-6.0 üm, 6.4-8.0 üm, and 4.4-6.0 üm, respectively, while the polar capsules averaged 2.5 times 1.5 üm (n = 30). Anatomic comparison with other myxosporean parasites enabled us to determine this to be a new species that we name Kudoa camarguensis n. sp.  相似文献

The extensive exploitation of rare earth elements (REEs), particularly in electronic technologies and agriculture has concomitantly raised the environmental load. Their resulting effects on primary producers such as microalgae are, however, poorly understood. We have studied these effects on two microalgae of biotechnological interest. The yellow‐green alga Trachydiscus minutus (Eustigmatophyceae, Ochrophyta), and the green alga Parachlorella kessleri (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) were cultivated in mineral medium supplemented with 10 μmol L?1 chlorides of REEs: cerium, gadolinium, lanthanum, lutetium, praseodymium, scandium, and with monazite, which is a mineral rich in those elements. We observed growth rates at different mean light intensities (20, 50, 150 and 300 μmol m?2 s?1). The high growth rate of P. kessleri was not affected by the presence of any lanthanide, and decreased proportionally with light intensity (from 0.2 to 0.04 doublings per hour). In contrast, the growth rate of T. minutus was about three times lower compared with P. kessleri, with an optimum at 50 μmol m?2 s?1 and decreased at higher or lower light intensities. In the presence of Ce3+, La3+ and Sc3+, the growth rate markedly increased to a value that corresponded to the growth rate in P. kessleri at the same light intensity. The composition and content of pigments and lipids were followed at the optimum light intensity for both species. The lipid content (percentage of dry weight) varied only slightly in the presence of individual rare earths. There was, however, an increase in saturated fatty acids at the expense of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The effect of REEs on pigments was variable: the presence of Ce3+, Gd3+, La3+ and Sc3+ caused an increase in the concentrations of major pigments such as lutein, violaxanthin, β‐carotene or chlorophylls, while Pr3+ and Lu3+ reduced them.  相似文献

The species composition of copepods of the genus Pseudocalanusthat dominate the zooplankton in Avachinskaya Bay was studied from samples collected in 1988. Three species were identified: P. minutus(Kröyer), P. newmani(Frost), and P. acuspes(Giesbrecht). The latter species is the first record for the fauna of the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Synonymy and original figures are given; the seasonal variations in the morphometric features and characteristics of Pseudocalanusare discussed.  相似文献

The physiological responses of plants to variable levels of root and shoot herbivory in the field may yield valuable insights regarding potential compensation or tolerance responses for herbivory. In an infestation of Centaurea stoebe (spotted knapweed) located in the Colorado foothills, we measured physiology, biomass, and flower production of individual plants undergoing a natural range of herbivory by the above- and belowground biological control insects, Larinus minutus and Cyphocleonus achates. Over the growing season, net carbon assimilation rate, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and intercellular leaf [CO2] (C i) all decreased, while water use efficiency increased. The decrease in these physiological traits was due to an increase in the intensity of L. minutus damage over time; effects of C. achates root damage to plant physiology, including transpiration were only marginally significant. The effects of these two species on plant physiology were not interactive, and Larinus minutus was found to exert larger negative effects on this invasive plant in terms of plant physiology and potential reproductive output than C. achates. While previous studies have shown C. achates to have significant negative effects on population densities of spotted knapweed, the addition of Larinus minutus to the suite of insects used in biological control of spotted knapweed should facilitate continued or enhanced reduction in densities of this noxious weed.  相似文献

We used field observations and experiments to show that sexual selection in two populations of sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus (Pisces, Gobiidae), was affected by differences in resource availability. Male sand gobies rely on empty mussel shells for nest building and spawning. The two populations differed considerably in nest-site abundance and sexual-selection regimes. In one population nest sites were scarce, leading to stronger male-male competition over nests, a higher nest site colonization rate and reduced potential for female choice compared with the other population that had a surplus of nests. In the high-competition population, males were larger than females, perhaps as a response to selection, whereas the other population was not sexually size dimorphic. The results from the field were confirmed in a pool experiment that demonstrated the effect of nest abundance on nest occupancy and male reproductive success. Larger males were more successful in obtaining nest sites in both high and low nest availability treatments. Larger males were also favored by females as mating partners, but only in the treatment with surplus nest sites. Nest shortage was associated with an increased potential for intrasexual selection (measured as the coefficient of variation), whereas the potential for intersexual selection was increased when nests were common. In conclusion, nest-site abundance can influence the relative contribution of intrasexual competition and mate choice in a population. Hence, resource availability can contribute to within-species variation in mating patterns.  相似文献

The use of scale inspection as a means of age-determination in Pomatoschistus microps and Pomatoschistus minutus in the Tagus estuary is confirmed, but annulus formation pattern is different from that described for P. microps in the area of the British Isles (Miller, 1975). In Britain, two annuli are laid down on the scales each year, but in the Tagus, only one annulus is formed. One possible reason for this difference is the fact that in the Tagus the peak breeding season and the lowest water temperatures coincide. Therefore, the two causes of annulus formation coexist at the same time of year.
Population structure in both species is dominated by the 0-group, which appears earlier (April/May) than reported for other areas. Maximum age seems not to exceed 26 months in P. microps and 32 months in P. minutus .  相似文献

Energetic constraints on mating performance in the sand goby   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

I tested the effect of food addition on reproductive successin male sand gobies, Pomatoschistus minutus, by comparing food-supplementedmales with unfed, control males. The sand goby is a small marinefish with paternal egg care. The males were breeding in artificialnest sites in otherwise natural conditions in the field. I quantifiedenergy reserves by extracting nonpolar lipids. The food supplementimproved the fat reserves of the fed males as compared to unfedmales. Fed males spent more time at the nest, whereas unfedmales spent a much smaller proportion of their time at the nest.As a consequence, fed males mated sooner than unfed males andtended to get more eggs. In the unfed group, mating speed wascorrelated to body length so that bigger males mated sooner. The results suggest that the reproductive success of breedingsand goby males is constrained by the availability of energybut that this constraint is most severe for small males andless severe for bigger males. Energy availability through itseffect on condition will affect the investment in reproductiveeffort.  相似文献

We evaluate evidence that reducing mammalian predators benefits threatened and declining grasshoppers in the Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand. Long-term population trends of Sigaus minutus are investigated under three control regimes: high intensity, indirect control through prey reduction and no control. We then test whether predator control benefits conservation management of Brachaspis robustus by translocating wild-caught individuals to areas of moderate versus no predator control. A significant positive trend in S. minutus counts occurred under high intensity and indirect control, suggesting that mammalian predator control is beneficial. Differences in the decline of translocated B. robustus were observed between moderate and no predator control release sites but could not be unequivocally attributed to predator densities. We recommend replicated predator control studies be undertaken to develop a predator management strategy which will enable grasshopper recovery, and investigate the potential for meso-predator release and prey-switching under regimes that target specific mammals.  相似文献
