1. The role of tocopherols in tomato chloroplasts from fresh, cold and dark-stored as well as stored and illuminated leaves was studied.2. The cold and dark storage of leaves results in a loss of chloroplast α- and γ-tocopherols of about 30–40% accompanied by an increase in chloroplast δ-tocopherol of about 40%. On illumination of stored leaves, an elevation of α- and γ-tocopherol level to about 110 and 95% of the control, respectively, occurs, whilst δ-tocopherol content is not affected.3. Experiments performed with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-treated chloroplasts show that only about 70% of total α-tocopherol is functionally active in the electron transport of Photosystem II between the diphenyl-carbazide (DPC) donation site and the inhibition site of DBMIB.4. A small amount of α-tocopherol quinone (about 10% of α-tocopherol content) is found in chloroplasts from fresh, fresh and illuminated as well as cold and dark-stored tomato leaves, whereas the illumination of the latter increases the chloroplast α-tocopherol quinone content 3-fold. Moreover, following the illumination of chloroplasts from cold and dark-stored as well as stored and illuminated leaves, the oxidation of exogenous α-tocopherol to α-tocopherol quinone is 2-fold faster then in chloroplasts from fresh leaves.5. The primary product (‘α-tocopheroxide’) formed during the α-tocopherol oxidation by illuminated chloroplasts was identified as 8a-hydroxy-α-tocopheron.6. Exogenous α-tocopherol inhibits the lipid photoperoxidation by about 40–50% in chloroplasts from all three kinds of tomato leaf.7. Summary Studies on the survival ofPseudomonas solanacearum, the causal agent of bacterial wilt of tomato, under laboratory conditions showed that soil amendments had little effect
on the population of the pathogen. When the host plant was grown in amended soil there was a positive influence on growth
of the pathogen. The population level of the pathogen incorporated into the soil was reduced to one-half within a period of
46 days.
The pathogen survived in the rhizosphere of non-host plants belonging to the families Acanthaceae and Leguminosae even in
the absence of the natural hosts, but its incidence in the rhizosphere of plants belonging to Graminae and Cyperaceae was
comparatively low indicating possibilities of reducing the inoculum potential of the pathogen in tomato fields by allowing
such plants to grow during fallow periods.

The effects of three levels of moisture under greenhouse conditions and also identical moisture levels under field conditions, on the growth yield and water relations of two tomato cultivars, Fireball and Ife I, were investigated. The objective was to ascertain the drought susceptibility of these two tomato cultivars. The cultivar, Ife I, was more drought susceptible than Fireball and the drought susceptibility increased with the level of soil water stress. The drought tolerance, of Fireball is attributed to a lower leaf area, better root system development in terms of average root length and rooting depth, and a higher leaf water potential. The higher leaf stomatal resistances of Fireball variety suggest an inbuilt mechanism to regulate water vapour flow in times of stress. 相似文献

Powdery mildew is a common and widespread plant disease of considerable agronomic relevance. It is caused by obligate biotrophic fungal pathogens which, in most cases, epiphytically colonize aboveground plant tissues. The disease has been typically studied as a binary interaction of the fungal pathogen with its plant hosts, neglecting, for the most part, the mutual interplay with the wealth of other microorganisms residing in the phyllo- and/or rhizosphere and roots. However, the establishment of powdery mildew disease can be impacted by the presence/absence of host-associated microbiota (epi- and endophytes) and, conversely, plant colonization by powdery mildew fungi might disturb indigenous microbial community structures. In addition, other (foliar) phytopathogens could interact with powdery mildews, and mycoparasites may affect the outcome of plant–powdery mildew interactions. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge regarding the intricate and multifaceted interplay of powdery mildew fungi, host plants and other microorganisms, and outline current gaps in our knowledge, thereby setting the basis for potential future research directions. 相似文献

Antipathogenic potential of 38 plants was evaluated in the form of aqueous extracts against Peronoclerospora sorghi, causing downy mildew of sorghum. Conidial suspension and plant extracts were mixed individually and allowed to stand for 5 min and then used to inoculate the host by sprout-dip method. The sprouts thus inoculated were grown in pots, and the disease incidence was observed. Eight plant extracts (Cicer areatinum, Datura metel, Croton sparsiflorus, Parthenium hysterophorus, Nerium oleander, Chromolaena odorata, Duranta repens and Oxalis latifolia) at 20% concentration performed at par with chemical fungicide (Mancozeb 75%) by exhibiting total suppression of disease incidence to 0%, when compared with 64.1% of negative control. Organic management of air-borne inoculum of downy mildew of sorghum is feasible and preferable when compared with chemical control methods, considering human and environmental health concerns. The use of water extract keeps the technology simple so that it can be directly prepared and used by the farmers. Short-listing of eight most effective water extracts would help in self-reliance of farmers, reducing their dependence on commercial products. 相似文献

Barrier cropping plays an essential role in controlling insect pests and insect-transmitted diseases in cultural control. It has been proven efficient in suppressing the spread of nonpersistently transmitted viruses. For suppressing the spread of persistently transmitted viruses, barrier cropping is not considered an effective control strategy because barrier plants cannot act as a virus sink to purge the virus in the vector. However, few successful cases of barrier cropping suppressing the spread of persistently transmitted viruses have been reported. The objectives of the present study were to screen candidates (cucumber, okra, Chinese kale, soybean, and corn) for potential barrier plants to control tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus (TYLCTHV) and examine whether prefeeding on these plants can reduce the virus titer in its vector, Bemisia tabaci, thus reducing TYLCTHV transmission. The results revealed that nonviruliferous whiteflies preferred cucumber and okra to tomato, whereas viruliferous whiteflies preferred cucumber to tomato. Although prefeeding on cucumber, okra, and Chinese kale did not reduce the titer of TYLCTHV in viruliferous whiteflies, the vector transmission rate decreased after the whiteflies fed on Chinese kale. It implies that planting Chinese kale as a barrier plant for tomato cultivation may reduce the incidence of TYLCTHV. In addition, the preference to cucumber plants may reduce the incidence of whiteflies acquiring TYLCTHV from virus-infected tomato plants and of viruliferous whiteflies inoculating the virus into healthy tomato plants, thereby reducing the disease incidence. Grapes downy mildew caused by obligate oomycete plant pathogen Plasmopara viticola is a devastating disease worldwide, resulting in significant yield and quality losses. A field survey was conducted in two major grapes cultivated areas of Tamil Nadu for the incidence of grapevine downy mildew. The disease incidence was 43.42%–76.69%, and the highest disease incidence of 76.69% was observed in the Theni district. Totally eight P. viticola isolates were collected from different places in Coimbatore and Theni districts. These isolates were confirmed through microscopic observation and sequencing of COX 2 gene, and the phylogenetic tree was developed to study their phylogenetic relationship among the isolates which shows 97–100% sequence similarity with other P. viticola isolates and less sequence similarity with Plasmopara species. The loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed based on the CesA4 gene sequence of P. viticola. The assay developed was more sensitive as it detected P. viticola genomic DNA up to 20 fmg. LAMP assay specificity was proved by carrying out the assay with genomic DNA extracted from other Oomycetes and fungal plant pathogens. Finally, LAMP assay was validated by testing seventy-eight grapevine leaf samples collected from seven different locations. LAMP assay showed a positive reaction in sixty-two samples tested out of seventy-eight samples tested. Therefore, the LAMP assay described should helpful for early and specific detection of downy mildew pathogen and help in mitigating disease incidence. 相似文献

Disease resistance (R) gene, RPP13, plays an important role in the resistance of plants to pathogen infections; its function in resistance of wheat to powdery mildew remains unknown. In this study, a RNA-Seq technique was used to monitor expression of genes in susceptible wheat ‘Jing411’ and resistant near-isogenic line ‘BJ-1’ in response to powdery mildew infection. Overall, 413 differential expression genes were observed and identified as involved in disease resistance. RPP13 homologous gene on wheat chromosome 7D was preliminarily identified using the wheat 660K SNP chip. RPP13 was highly expressed in ‘BJ-1’ and encodes 1,027 amino acids, including CC, NB and LRR domain, termed TaRPP13-3. After inoculation with powdery mildew, expression of TaRPP13-3 in resistant wheat changed with time, but average expression was higher when compared to susceptible variety, thus indicating that TaRPP13-3 is involved in resistance to powdery mildew. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) was used to inhibit expression of TaRPP13-3 in resistant parent ‘Brock’. Results indicated that silencing of TaRPP13-3 led to decreased disease resistance in ‘Brock’. Overall results of this study indicate that TaRPP13-3 gene is involved in the defence response of wheat to powdery mildew and plays a positive role in wheat powdery mildew interactions. 相似文献

Although certain pollutants can be biologically degraded by microorganisms, rendering their impact short-term, others can not be impaired, such that their effect persists. The present study evaluates the effectiveness of using a field-collected aphid, Aphis gossypii, as a bio-indicator for heavy metals in tomato farms in Riyadh and Hafar Al-Batin, Saudi Arabia. Heavy metals were selected (Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb) and measured for comparative screening in field-collected plants, soil, and aphids using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Field-collected aphids from both studied regions were identified as Aphis gossypii. In Riyadh, there was no significant difference observed for Cd, Cu, and Zn for all experimental samples, while, Pb was showed differences among samples especially tomato leaves None of the studied samples in Hafar Al-Batin were showed statistically significant differences in Cd, in reverse to significant differences in the other heavy metals. Comparing concentrations of selected heavy metals between the two studied regions was showed that neither region showed a significant difference in heavy metals except for Cu. This study demonstrates that tomato leaf samples showed the highest concentrations of most studied heavy metals, followed by soil, then aphids. Aphids were utilized as a bio-indicator of heavy metals in the studied regions. 相似文献

This study investigated the effect of a single dose of tomato sauce on healthy male volunteers in a randomized crossover study. Healthy male subjects (n = 10) were enrolled. Placebo (rice and olive oil) or tomato (tomato sauce, rice and olive oil) meals were provided to the volunteers. Blood and urine samples were taken before consumption of meal (0 h) and 2, 4, 6, 24 and 48 h after meal. Consumption of tomato sauce increased plasma lycopene level by 5–22%, with a maximum level at 24 h (p<0.01) after the meal. Levels of plasma F2-isoprostanes, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid products, allantoin and urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine did not change after either meal, but urinary F2-isoprostanes (p<0.05) significantly decreased at 48 h compared to 0 h after the tomato sauce meal. This study showed that a single dose of tomato sauce meal had only a limited antioxidant effect in vivo. 相似文献
