Question: Which nutrient limits primary production in a lake created by flooding industrial cutaway peatland? Location: Clongawny Lake (53°10’N, 07°53’W), County Offaly, Ireland Methods: Nutrient concentrations in lake water and the dynamics of phytoplankton populations were monitored over a 38‐month period. The ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to total phosphorus (DIN:TP) and nutrient enrichment bio‐assays were used to investigate temporal changes in nutrient limitation. Results: Primary production in the new lake was phytoplankton‐driven due to the scarcity of recolonizing macrophytes. Phytoplankton growth was initially phosphorus‐limited. The runoff of phosphate fertilizer from an adjacent coniferous forestry plantation raised the TP concentration of lake water 5.5‐fold. Consequently, the biovolume of phytoplankton increased 30‐fold, and chlorophyll‐a concentrations increased eightfold, reaching hyper‐eutrophic levels. A concurrent depletion of nitrogen in lake water reduced the DIN:TP ratio from 17.8 to 0.6, and phytoplankton growth rapidly became nitrogen‐limited. Phytoplankton composition shifted from dinoflagellates to minute, unicellular chlorophytes, with a coincident decline in species diversity. Cyanobacteria did not proliferate, most likely due to the acidic nature of the lake. Conclusions: Results illustrated the vulnerability of newly created cutaway peatland lakes to developing severe phytoplankton blooms and coincident secondary nitrogen limitation in the presence of moderate external phosphorus inputs.  相似文献

Dreissenid mussels (the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha and the quagga mussel D. bugensis) are ecosystem engineers that modify the physical environment by increasing light penetration. Such a change is likely to affect the distribution and diversity of submerged macrophytes. Filter-feeding by these mussels has been associated with increased water clarity in many North American and European lakes. In this study, we report the increase in water clarity of Oneida Lake, New York, USA, for 1975–2002 and argue that the increase was caused by zebra mussel invasion rather than declines in nutrients. Over the study period, although mean total phosphorus decreased significantly, the main increase in water clarity occurred after the zebra mussel invasion in 1991. The average depth receiving 1% surface light increased from 6.7 m to 7.8 m after the invasion of zebra mussels, representing a 23% areal expansion. The maximum depth of macrophyte colonization, as measured by diver and hydroacoustic surveys, increased from 3.0 m before the invasion of zebra mussels to 5.1 m after their establishment. In addition, macrophyte species richness increased, the frequency of occurrence increased for most species, and the composition of the macrophyte community changed from low-light–tolerant species to those tolerating a wide range of light conditions. Comparisons with observations reported in the literature indicate that increased light penetration alone could explain these changes in macrophyte distribution and diversity. Such changes will increase the importance of benthic primary production over pelagic production in the food web, thereby representing an overall alteration of ecosystem function, a process we refer to as “benthification”.  相似文献

The importance of dispersal for the maintenance of biodiversity, while long-recognized, has remained unresolved. We used molecular markers to measure effective dispersal in a natural population of the vertebrate-dispersed Neotropical tree, Simarouba amara (Simaroubaceae) by comparing the distances between maternal parents and their offspring and comparing gene movement via seed and pollen in the 50 ha plot of the Barro Colorado Island forest, Central Panama. In all cases (parent-pair, mother-offspring, father-offspring, sib-sib) distances between related pairs were significantly greater than distances to nearest possible neighbours within each category. Long-distance seedling establishment was frequent: 74% of assigned seedlings established > 100 m from the maternal parent [mean = 392 +/- 234.6 m (SD), range = 9.3-1000.5 m] and pollen-mediated gene flow was comparable to that of seed [mean = 345.0 +/- 157.7 m (SD), range 57.6-739.7 m]. For S. amara we found approximately a 10-fold difference between distances estimated by inverse modelling and mean seedling recruitment distances (39 m vs. 392 m). Our findings have important implications for future studies in forest demography and regeneration, with most seedlings establishing at distances far exceeding those demonstrated by negative density-dependent effects.  相似文献

Cooperatively breeding animals, in which helpers may participatein reproduction with dominant breeders, are ideal species forexamining intraspecific variation in testis size because theyoften exhibit both monogamous breeding (low risk of sperm competition)and polyandrous breeding (high risk) within a population. However,little is known about testis investment as a result of spermcompetition in these animals. The substrate-brooding cichlidfish Julidochromis ornatus has a cooperatively breeding system,in which some males mate monogamously and other males reproduceas dominant breeders or helpers within cooperatively breedinggroups, in which male helpers frequently sire young. We examinedthe relationship between testis investment and male social statusin relation to the risk of sperm competition. As predicted fromsperm competition models, in groups with male helpers, boththe male breeders and the male helpers invested more in testesmass, compared to breeding males without male helpers. We alsofound a positive relationship between the testes mass of malebreeders and their male helpers, suggesting that males increasetheir investment in reproductive capability under the risk ofsperm competition. Sperm competition models also predict thatlarger testes are associated with increased siring success.Our paternity analysis supported this prediction; we found apositive relationship between testis investment by male helpersand the number of offspring they sired.  相似文献

Rainwater was collected near culturally eutrophic Lake Sallie, Minnesota. Rain pH was low, but sulphuric acid did not appear to be the causative agent. Nitrogen varied greatly in single rainfalls. Ammonia was normally more concentrated than nitrate; both fell in sufficient quantitites to enrich surface waters. Atmospheric N loading may stimulate algal production. Rainwater phosphorus was normally less than 40 µg/l and insignificant in contrast to cultural influences. Calculations of rainfall nutrient contributions are given.  相似文献

Potential nitrogen-fixing freshwater photosynthetic bacteria of 32 isolates from the Aswan High Dam Lake were investigated using the acetylene reduction technique to ascertain the magnitude of their contribution of fixed nitrogen to the ecosystem. The superior nitrogen-fixing Rhodospirillaceae wereRhodocyclus gelatinosus andRhodomicrobium vannielii followed byRhodobacter capsulatus, Rhodopseudomonas viridis andRhodopseudomonas palustris. High and moderate nitrogenase activities (534 to 1528 nmol ethylene produced/4 ml/h) were found in 56% of the isolates, while the remainder showed low activities (76 to 477 nmol ethylene produced/4 ml/h).  相似文献

Aim Free‐ranging benthopelagic fishes often have large population sizes and high rates of dispersal. These traits can act to homogenize population structure across the distributional range of a species and to reduce the likelihood of allopatric speciation. The apparent absence of any barriers to gene flow among populations, together with prior molecular evidence for panmixia across the ranges of three species, has resulted in Diplotaxodon, a genus of benthopelagic cichlid fishes of Lake Malawi, being proposed as a candidate case of sympatric speciation. Our aim was to further investigate this possibility by testing for intraspecific genetic subdivision among breeding populations, and intraspecific differences in breeding habitat. Location Lake Malawi, central‐east Africa. Methods We analysed eight microsatellite DNA loci to test for spatial genetic differences among populations on breeding grounds of eight Diplotaxodon species. We also tested for temporal population genetic differences within breeding grounds of three species. Records of ripe Diplotaxodon encountered during sampling were analysed to test if spatial variation in assemblage structure was linked to nearshore water depth and geographic proximity of sampling sites. Results Consistent with previous molecular evidence, within four of the eight species tested we found no evidence of spatial genetic structuring among breeding populations. However, within the other four species we found slight yet significant spatial genetic differences, indicating restricted gene flow among breeding grounds. There was no evidence of temporal genetic differences within sites. Analyses of the distributions of ripe Diplotaxodon revealed differences in assemblage structure linked to nearshore water depth. Main conclusions Together, these results demonstrate both the evolution of fidelity to deep‐water breeding locations in some Diplotaxodon species, and differences in breeding habitat among species. These findings are consistent with a role for divergence of breeding habitat in speciation of these cichlids, possibly promoted by dispersal limitation among geographically segregated spawning aggregations.  相似文献

This study addressed within-population dispersal patterns among the species-rich Lake Malawi cichlids, specifically among the rock-dwelling mbuna group. Relatedness values were calculated for 160 individuals belonging to two species from known locations in the field by screening six highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. The results from both species indicate that spatially adjacent females have higher average relatedness values than those separated by larger distances, but that this pattern is reversed in males. This therefore provides firm evidence for male-biased dispersal within the Malawian cichlid flock.  相似文献

A small catchment on the Swedish West Coast has been studied over four years to determine S dynamics by using S isotope ratios. A Norway spruce dominated forest covers the catchment, and small peat areas occur in the lower parts of the catchment. The runoff values varied both during the year, and from year to year. Over the period from February 1990 to December 1993, the values ranged from — 1%. to +11%. Over the same period, the throughfall values ranged from +1%. to +15%. There was no correlation (r 2= 0.01; Pr(F)=0.57) between values in throughfall and runoff. Since the only input of S to the catchment is atmospheric deposition, the long-term runoff S mass flux is controlled by the deposition. Therefore, processes in the catchment are responsible for the variation in the runoff values. During periods with enriched runoff, bacterial dissimilatory SO 4 2– reduction occurs in the catchment. After very dry periods, oxidation of this reduced S, which is32S-enriched, can be traced in runoff. Previous studies of the catchment have not been able to distinguish between: 1) oxidation of reduced S and dry deposition, and 2) reduction and adsorption. From the current study, it can be concluded that adsorption and dry deposition cannot cause the observed variation in runoff .  相似文献

Gas exchange of the understorey epiphyte Aspasia principissa was studied in fluctuating light conditions both in the laboratory and in the field, testing the hypothesis that vascular epiphytes differ from most terrestrial understorey plants in showing a higher priority for water conservation. Consequently, a slow response of stomatal conductance to sudden increases in incident photon flux density (PFD) was expected, as was a fast loss of induction after such a light fleck. Results were only partly consistent with these expectations. Full induction of photosynthesis was indeed very slow and was not reached before, respectively, 40 and 60 min of saturating PFD in the field and the laboratory. In contrast, kinetics of induction loss were comparable with those of most terrestrial species studied to date. The overall impact of light flecks on in situ carbon gain again fulfilled expectations, being rather limited: the observed carbon gain was only approx. 66% of the potential carbon gain estimated from a square-wave response model. It is concluded that in the drought-prone epiphytic habitat of a moist lowland forest, water conservation takes priority over carbon gain, which severely limits the use of light flecks for CO(2) fixation in vascular epiphytes.  相似文献
