The littoral nematode community adjacent to a river mouth (River Schussen) on Lake Constance (Germany) was studied from February
1999 to January 2000 in order to determine the influence of stress resulting from fluctuations in river discharge on local
nematode assemblages. Additionally, the influence of wind as a second important stress factor was considered. Six sample sites
were chosen, reflecting a gradient of river influence within the broader river mouth area. Nematode communities, varying in
a mean range from 121 to 165 ind/10 cm2, were found to differ significantly in terms of abundance, feeding type composition and species diversity. Deposit feeders
were most abundant at all sites followed by chewers. Deposit feeders were affected mainly by wind events, while species diversity
and the occurrence of chewers were influenced mainly by river discharge. The impact of both these stress factors was modified
by a third variable, water level. Moderate and high levels of combined habitat stress led to significant changes in community
structure. Under conditions of calm weather and low discharge, reduced species diversity and an increased predominance of
deposit feeders were observed. In most cases, species diversity was found to be higher under moderate stress conditions, an
observation that offers support for Connel’s Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis. 相似文献

As fish move and interact with their aquatic environment by swimming, small morphological variations of the locomotor system can have profound implications on fitness. Damselfishes (Pomacentridae) have inhabited coral reef ecosystems for more than 50 million years. As such, habitat preferences and behavior could significantly constrain the morphology and evolvability of the locomotor system. To test this hypothesis, we used phylogenetic comparative methods on morphometric, ecological and behavioral data. While body elongation represented the primary source of variation in the locomotor system of damselfishes, results also showed a diverse suite of morphological combinations between extreme morphologies. Results show clear associations between behavior, habitat preferences, and morphology, suggesting ecological constraints on shape diversification of the locomotor system. In addition, results indicate that the three modules of the locomotor system are weakly correlated, resulting in versatile and independent characters. These results suggest that Pomacentridae is shape may result from the interaction between (1) integrated parts of morphological variation that maintain overall swimming ability and (2) relatively independent parts of the morphology that facilitate adaptation and diversification. The temporal lag between gene expression and metabolite accumulation has been estimated in flavonol biosynthesis, but the time difference between these events is unclear. In the present study, we investigated the expression of flavonol biosynthetic genes ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL5, MYELOBLASTOSIS PROYEIN12/PRODUCTION OF FLAVONOL GLYCOSYDES1, CHALCONE SYNTHASE, CHALCONE ISOMERASE, FLAVANONE 3-HYDROXYLASE, and FLAVONOL SYNTHASE1, and the accumulation of flavonol glycosides (kaempferol and quercetin glycosides) in time-series samples of Arabidopsis thaliana roots. All genes started to be expressed within 3 h after sequential light irradiation (HAS) and reached their maximum expression levels at 12 HAS, and the accumulation of the flavonol glycosides started at 6 HAS. Metabolome analysis using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry showed that the accumulation of kaempferol 3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside and kaempferol 3-O-rhamnosyl (1 → 2) glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside reached their maximum levels at 48 HAS, whereas other flavonol glycosides, such as kaempferol/quercetin 3-O-rhamnoside-7-O-rhamnoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside and quercetin 3-O-rhamnosyl (1 → 2) glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside, increased gradually until 96 HAS. These results show that the expression of the flavonol genes is an early response against light exposure, and that the accumulation of the flavonol glycosides is a late response. 相似文献

To obtain adhesive and safe lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains for expressing heterologous antigens, we screened LAB inhabitants in intestine of Tibetan chickens by analyzing their adhesion and safety properties and the selected LAB was engineered to express heterologous antigen (UTEpi C-A) based on chromosomal integration strategy. We demonstrated that a new Lactobacillu salivarius TCMM17 strain is strongly adhesive to chicken intestinal epithelial cells, contains no endogenous plasmids, is susceptible to tested antimicrobials, and shows no toxicities. In order to examine the potential of TCMM17 strain as heterogenous antigen delivering vehicle, we introduced a UTEpi C-A expression cassette in its chromosome by constructing a non-replicative plasmid (pORI280-UUTEpi C-AD). The recombinant TCMM17 strain (?TCMM17) stably was found to keep the gene cassette through 50 generations, and successfully displayed EpiC encoded by the cassette on its surface. Reactive separations using green catalysts offer great opportunities for manufacturing fatty esters, involved in specialty chemicals and biodiesel production. Integrating reaction and separation into one unit provides key benefits such as: simplified operation, no waste, reduced capital investment and low operating costs.This work presents a novel heat-integrated reactive absorption process that eliminates all conventional catalyst related operations, efficiently uses the raw materials and equipment, and considerably reduces the energy requirements for biodiesel production - 85% lower as compared to the base case. Rigorous simulations based on experimental results were carried out using Aspen Plus and Dynamics. Despite the high degree of integration, the process is well controllable using an efficient control structure proposed in this work. The main results are provided for a plant producing 10 ktpy fatty acid methyl esters from methanol and waste vegetable oil with high free fatty acids content, using sulfated zirconia as solid acid catalyst. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in the recruitment of the intertidal barnacle Chthamalus malayensis was examined over one year (September 2003-August 2004) on the equatorial shores of southern Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. A nested sampling design was applied for the first time on these shores, over three spatial scales - hundreds of kilometres, kilometres to tens of kilometres and tens of metres - and temporal variation was determined through monthly sampling of recruits. Shores within 2° north of the equator on the East and West coasts of southern Peninsular Malaysia and the southern coast of Singapore were selected as study sites. Generally, all three coasts recruited throughout the year, with varying intensities. There was a clear regional pattern, where the largest number of recruits was found on the East Coast of Malaysia, and the least in Singapore. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) showed that variability occurred on the smallest scale, but only in nine of the twelve months examined, consequently resulting in significant temporal and spatial interaction. Calculated variance components indicated that small-scale variation accounted for most of the overall variability. The potential causes of the spatial and temporal patterns of C. malayensis recruitment, and implications on tropical-temperate comparisons will be discussed. 相似文献

All natural environments are spatially and temporally heterogeneous. Consequently, their ability to provide essential resources for the growth of plants is variable. Modular plant species produce repeated basic structures which, in the case of clonal species, are called ramets. Ramets belonging to the same clone are distributed throughout the environment in space and time, and therefore they may be located in sites which differ in resource-providing quality. The connections between ramets may allow resources to be shared, enabling the clone to behave as a cooperative system. As a result of such physiological integration, ramets can survive in conditions where there is lethal shortage of a resource because they are connected to, and supported by, ramets located in conditions where there is ample supply of the same resource. Physiological integration between connected ramets presents opportunities for heterogeneous environments to be exploited to an extent that is only just becoming apparent. As heterogeneity is ubiquitous in natural environments, it may be expected that plants, as relatively immobile organisms, will have evolved the capacity to cope with it by making appropriate localized morphological and/or physiological plastic responses. Recent studies suggest that such responses not only enable clonal species to cope with environmental heterogeneity, but that under some circumstances they can benefit more from environments which are heterogeneous rather than homogeneous, even when both types of environment contain the same amount of resources. This article examines the promise and challenge of marine biotelemetry technologies, comparing the case of the Canadian Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) and the Australian Animal Tagging and Monitoring System (AATAMS). These technologies provide increased understanding of the marine environment and promise major advances in knowledge of species at risk. However, that utilization of marine biotelemetry raises challenges, including ensuring that knowledge obtained is translated into forms useful to and usable by decision makers.
