Exact mathematical solutions in terms of confluent hypergeometric and Airy's functions are obtained to study the steady state temperature distributions in human skin and subcutaneous tissues (SST). It is assumed that the skin is exposed to an air environment and heat transfer from the skin occurs by convection, radiation and evaporation. A mathematical model of the SST, accounting for heat conduction, perfusion of the capillary beds and metabolic heat productions of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, has been solved to obtain interface temperatures for a wide range of environmental temperatures, rates of evaporation of sweat, wind speeds and relative humidities. The solutions provide inter-relationships between interface temperatures, thermal conductivities, metabolic heat production, blood perfusion, thicknesses of various layers of SST and ambient temperature.  相似文献

Summary In the ogu cytoplasmic male-sterile (CMS) line of Brassica napus, stamen morphology was influenced by temperature conditions. Under a high temperature regime (27° C/23° C; day/ night) CMS stamens had a near-normal morphology, but microsporogenesis proceeded to a maximum of the microspore stage. However, compared to the normal stamens, the occurrence of sporopollenin-like deposits in the tapetum and deposition of exine on the microspores was sparse. Also, the tapetal cells of the CMS line were often highly vacuolate and failed to degenerate at the same stage as the normal. Ultrastructural changes in the mitochondrial matrix and cristae plus dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum, which occurred during development in sporogenous tissues of the normal line, were often lacking or mistimed in the mutant. Due to extensive variation, even between adjacent locules, the cytological differences between the normal and CMS anthers cannot be ascribed as the cause of male sterility in the ogu CMS line of B. napus, rather they may be the consequence of it.  相似文献

Summary Few quantitative studies have examined the ecological consequences of similarities and/or differences in mating behaviour of parapatric species. Reproductive interference occurs between several parapatric species of Australian reptile tick, due to similarities in their mating behaviour (Andrews et al. 1982a). Attempts to determine whether reproductive interference serves to maintain parapatry between Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri have been hindered because of difficulties in providing conditions conducive to conspecific mating in Amb. limbatum. The present study examined whether off-host and/or onhost temperature influenced the subsequent mating behaviour (i.e. the proportion of females that mate and the time when mating occurs) of these two species. Irrespective of the temperature experienced by ticks prior to host attachment, specific on-host temperatures were needed to induce mating in Amb. limbatum (i.e. host cloacal temperatures >32° C prior to the time of peak mating activity). Significantly more Amb. limbatum females were mated and the time taken by females to mate decreased with increasing on-host temperatures. mating in Ap. hydrosauri occurred over a wider range of on-host temperatures and the time when mating occurred did not alter at different on-host temperatures. In addition, significantly more Ap. hydrosauri males moved and each male made more moves on hosts than did Amb. limbatum males. It is suggested that Ap. hydrosauri may in consequence have a competitive mating advantage over Amb. limbatum at a boundary. Similarities in mating behaviour, on the other hand, increase the probability of reproductive interference, hence reduce the reproductive fitness of colonizing females of both species. We propose that similarities and differences in mating behaviour could play a critical role in the maintenance of parapatric boundaries.  相似文献

Summary In a geographically wide distribution the life cycles of different populations of the cabbage moth Mamestra brossicae are adapted to a remarkable diversity of climatic conditions. This is undoubtedly a proof of its success in adaptation. Some populations living in regions characterized by a drought period interrupting the growth season are capable of distinguishing between one critical day length signalling the onset of the drought period and another signalling the end of the growth season. This study, therefore, is primarily concerned with the geographical patterns in the variability of the adaptional responses of populations exposed to environmental conditions requiring different strategies and tactics in, synchronizing individual, life cycles. It is also a contribution to our understanding of evolutionary mechanisms maintaining median responses to photoperiodically inductive day lengths in geographically different populations. The populations investigated originated from regions differing in predictability of the incidence, onset and duration of a drought period: Freiburg (48.0°N, Southern Germany), Avignon (44.0°N, Southern France), and Argelès (42.5°N, Southern France). Geographical variation with respect to both onset and duration of a drought period consequently results in clinal variation of the variability of innate day length thresholds triggering aestival dormancy and of innate duration of aestivation. In this paper we considered the influence of geographically changing temperatures on aestival dormancy induction. Even in southern populations of M. brassicae a temperature dependent switch off-mechanism exists which prevents aestival dormancy under certain environmental conditions. The effective temperatures vary geographically, too. What the geographical patterns in adaptive responses really are, is discussed. This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Sa 259/3-1)  相似文献

Summary The sum of effective temperatures (SET) and lower development threshold (LDT) were established for eggs and/or pupae of central European populations of 20 species of chrysopid, coccinellid, hemerobiid, and syrphid predators of aphids. LDT ranged between 5.6° and 12.2°C, SET between 38.3 and 140.9 day degrees (dd), with broad overlap among stages and taxa. When LDT was plotted against SET, the data for both eggs and pupae were scattered along a single regression line which predicted a 0.47°C decrease in LDT per 10 dd increase in SET (r=-0.77, p<0.001). A regression calculated from published data from all over the world predicted a 0.24°C/10 dd decrease in LDT, and the data were more scattered (r=-0.38, p<0.01). This is perhaps the first report on the functional relationship between LDT and SET at the interspecific level. The species and stages differed in typical development length (VDL) and in the extent of its deceleration by low temperatures (DD). DD increased with increasing VDL, but the relative effect of low temperature on development length (DD/VDL ratio) reflected thermal adaptations consistent with the life history of the species. Polyvoltine species were less affected by low temperatures than monovoltine species, particularly the thermophilic ones.  相似文献

The studies described in the paper were conducted with tissue slices of Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants floating in isotonic buffer. In a first series of experiments, temperature effects on the efflux of [14C]malate and14CO2 were studied. An increase of temperature increased the efflux from the tissue in a non-linear manner. The efflux was markedly influenced also by the temperatures applied during the pretreatment. The rates of label export in response to the temperature and the relative contributions of14CO2 and [14C]malate to the label export were different in the two studied CAM plants (Kalanchoë daigremontiana, Sempervivum montanum). In further experiments, temperature response of the labelling patterns produced by14CO2 fixation and light and darkness were studied. In tissue which had accumulated malate (acidified state) an increase of temperature decreased the rates of dark CO2 fixation whilst the rates of CO2 fixation in light remained largely unaffected. An increase of temperature shifted the labelling patterns from a C4-type (malate being the mainly labelled compound) into a C3-type (label in carbohydrates). No such shift in the labelling patterns could be observed in the tissue which had depleted the previously stored malate (deacidified state). The results indicate that in the acidified tissue the increase of temperature increases the efflux of malate from the vacuole by changing the properties of the tonoplast. It is assumed that the increased export of malic acid lowers the in-vivo activity of phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase by feedback inhibition.Abbreviations CAM Crassulacean acid metabolism - FW fresh weight - PEPCase phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase Dedicated to Professor O.L. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was induced in attached leaves of kiwifruit grown in natural light not exceeding a photon flux density (PFD) of 300 mol·m-2·s-1, by exposing them to a PFD of 1500 mol·m-2·s-1. The temperature was held constant, between 5 and 35° C, during the exposure to high light. The kinetics of photoinhibition were measured by chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K and the photon yield of photosynthetic O2 evolution. Photoinhibition occurred at all temperatures but was greatest at low temperatures. Photoinhibition followed pseudo first-order kinetics, as determined by the variable fluorescence (F v) and photon yield, with the long-term steady-state of photoinhibition strongly dependent on temperature wheareas the observed rate constant was only weakly temperature-dependent. Temperature had little effect on the decrease in the maximum fluorescence (F m) but the increase in the instantaneous fluorescence (F o) was significantly affected by low temperatures in particular. These changes in fluorescence indicate that kiwifruit leaves have some capacity to dissipate excessive excitation energy by increasing the rate constant for non-radiative (thermal) energy dissipation although temperature apparently had little effect on this. Direct photoinhibitory damage to the photosystem II reaction centres was evident by the increases in F o and extreme, irreversible damage occurred at the lower temperatures. This indicates that kiwifruit leaves were most susceptible to photoinhibition at low temperatures because direct damage to the reaction centres was greatest at these temperatures. The results also imply that mechanisms to dissipate excess energy were inadequate to afford any protection from photoinhibition over a wide temperature range in these shade-grown leaves.Abbreviations and symbols fluorescence yield correction coefficient - F o, F m, F v instantaneous, maximum, variable fluorescence - K D, K F, K P, K T rate constants for non-radiative energy dissipation, fluorescence, photochemistry, energy transfer to photosystem I - PFD photon flux density - PSI, II photosystem I, II - i photon yield of photosynthesis (incident light)  相似文献

Light and temperature markedly influence sporangiophore development inPhycomyces blakesleeanus. Under normal conditions in the dark, low temperature drastically stimulates the production of dwarf sporangiophores (microphorogenesis) and inhibits that of giant sporangiophores (macrophorogenesis). These effects of low temperature could still be observed if applied only for a short period before sporangiophore initiation. Continuous white illumination strongly inhibits microphorogenesis and slightly stimulates macrophorogenesis. Short exposures to white light noticeably inhibit microphorogenesis and stimulate macrophorogenesis when given to mycelia grown for between 90 and 160 h at 14° C or 150 h or more at 10° C. These results indicate the existence in the mycelium of developmental stages for the regulation of sporangiophorogenesis by environmental signals.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to examine the effect of abrupt changes in temperature in the range 5 to 30°C upon the rate of photosynthetic carbon assimilation in leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Measurement of the CO2-assimilation rate in relation to the intercellular partial pressure of CO2 at different temperatures and O2 concentrations and at saturating irradiance showed that as the temperature was decreased photosynthesis was saturated at progressively lower CO2 partial pressures and that the transition between the CO2-limited and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-regeneration-limited rate became more abrupt. Feeding of orthophosphate to leaves resulted in an increased rate of CO2 assimilation at lower temperatures at around ambient or higher CO2 partial pressures both in 20% O2 and in 2% O2 and it removed the abruptness in the transition between the CO2-limited and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-regeneration-limited rates. Phosphate feeding tended to inhibit carbon assimilation at higher temperatures. The response of carbon assimilation to temperature was altered by feeding orthophosphate, by changing the concentrations of CO2 or of O2 or by leaving plants in the dark at 4°C for several hours. Similarly, the response of carbon assimilation to phosphate feeding or to changes in 2% O2 was altered by leaving the plants in the dark at 4°C. The mechanism of limitation of photosynthesis by an abrupt lowering of temperature is discussed in the light of the results.Abbreviations A rate of CO2 assimilation - P i intercellular partial pressure of CO2 - RuBP ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate  相似文献

Summary Microtubular organelles formed during continuous exposure to high or low temperature were studied. Neither heat nor cold prevents formation of the microtubular skeleton in the oral parts of the ciliateDileptus. Elevated temperature causes the formation of short microtubular fibres, while the size of the oral structure is not diminished. This leads to failure in sculpturing of the cytostome. Heat-treatment may also alter the localization of the anchor site of fibres around the circumference of the basal bodies, and the orientation of the fibres. Cold-treatment evokes the formation of small mouthparts containing a lower number of organelles, although these are properly shaped and there are no deviations in the position or orientation of fibres. It seems that low temperature may suppress the rate of formation of microtubular organelles, while elevated temperature affects their patterning.Abbreviations MTOC microtubule organizing centre - T transverse fibres - B basal body - Cy cytostome - K kinetodesma - P postciliary fibre - C compound fibre - L lamina - F filamentous bundle - M monokinetid  相似文献
