The Common Five-Lined Skink (Plestiodon fasciatus), Southeastern Five-Lined Skink (P. inexpectatus), and Broadheaded Skink (P. laticeps) are all found in forested ecosystems of the southeastern United States and occur in apparent sympatry. No aspect of their ecology has been quantitatively shown to be different. Differences in their natural history, such as northern extent of geographic range, observations of differences in habitat preference, and differing physiological responses to temperature, implicate the thermal environment as a potential niche dimension by which these organisms partition resources. Here we show that the northernmost extent of each species' range can be adequately discriminated by temperature extremes and that their preferred habitats differ in canopy cover, mean temperature, and daily maximum temperatures. These differences are supported by observations in the field. Based upon these findings and observations, we conclude that these species may be able to exist in such close proximity due to differences in their thermal niche, particularly the two like-sized species, P. fasciatus and P. inexpectatus. P. laticeps is a much larger lizard as an adult and functionally coexists with its congeners, potentially by partitioning resources along a different axis.  相似文献

Goldfish (Carassius auratus) and bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) were placed in aquaria where their locomotor activity was monitored by photocells, and tested at various acclimation temperatures over a range encompassing their final thermal preferenda. Activity was pooled over 24-hour periods to eliminate any circadian rhythm effects. Both species exhibited an activity well of reduced locomotor activity in the region of the final preferendum. Goldfish, tested either singly or in groups of 2–5 individuals, exhibited a social-interaction effect which became more pronounced at higher temperatures. These results are discussed in relation to a thermokinetic interpretation of thermo-regulatory behavior in fishes, and to the correspondence between thermal preferenda and thermal optima.  相似文献

Abstract. We analysed vegetation dynamics in Tierra del Fuego steppes using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data provided by advanced very high‐resolution radiometer (AVHRR) on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) polar satellite. Our objective, at a regional scale, was to analyse the spatial variability of NDVI dynamics in relation to parent material and geographic location, representing the fertility and climate gradients respectively; at a local scale, it was to analyse the inter‐annual variability associated with climate and its relation with sheep production indices. The general pattern of NDVI dynamics was analysed with Principal Component Analysis. We found that the geographic location was more important than landscape type in explaining NDVI dynamics despite the fact that the variation in landscape type reflects a fertility gradient strongly associated with floristic composition and secondary productivity. Discriminant Analysis was performed to identify the variables that better distinguish geographic units. The Northern region (with the lowest precipitation and the highest temperatures) had lower NDVI values over the year. In the Central region, NDVI reached the highest value of the season, surpassing both other regions. The Southern region (the coldest and moistest) had its growth pattern displaced towards the summer. For the Central region we analysed 10 years of monthly NDVI data with PCA. We found that precipitation from August to December and winter temperature are the most important determinants of overall NDVI values. Lamb production was correlated with spring and early summer NDVI values. Sheep mortality is affected by low NDVI values in late summer and high annual amplitude. Satellite information allowed us to characterize the vegetation dynamics of three ecological areas across the Fuegian steppe.  相似文献

We model theoretically the response of the widely studied circadian oscillator of Neurospora crassa to inactivation of the frq gene. The resulting organism has been termed "arrhythmic" under constant conditions. Under entrainment to periodic temperature cycles Roenneberg, Merrow and coworkers have shown that the phase angle at which spore formation occurs depends on the entrainment period, curiously even in the null frq mutants (frq9 and frq10). We show that such a response does not imply the presence of a self-sustained free-running oscillator. We derive a simple candidate model (a damped harmonic oscillator) for the null frq mutants that successfully reproduces the observed phase angle response. An endogenous period of 21 h for the damped harmonic oscillator coincides with the endogenous period of wild-type Neurospora. This suggests that the (noise driven) "residual system" present in the mutants may have a significant timekeeping role in the wild-type organism. Our model (with no change of parameters) was then used to investigate spore formation patterns under constant conditions and reproduces the corresponding experimental data of Aronson et al. (Proc. 用测定净光合放氧速率的方法研究了温度、光照和pH对锥状斯氏藻(Scrippsiella trochoidea)和塔玛亚历山大藻(Alexandrium tamarense)光合作用的影响.在不同光暗周期(L∶D)条件下培养锥状斯氏藻和塔玛亚历山大藻,研究了光暗周期对生长繁殖速率和生物量的影响.2种藻对温度的变化敏感,适宜的温度范围是17~25℃,最适温度20~22℃,低于10℃和高于30℃不能生长;锥状斯氏藻的光饱和点是400 μmol·m-2·s-1,塔玛亚历山大藻的光饱和点是650 μmol·m-2·s-1, 都属于喜高光强的微藻;2种藻对pH值的变化极其敏感,适宜的pH值范围很小,为7.0~9.0, 最适pH值7.5~8.0, 与其生活的海洋环境一致,pH值高于9.5时, 不能进行有效的光合作用,pH值10.0可致全部细胞死亡;在一定范围内,2种藻的生长速率(μ)和生物量随着光照时间的延长呈比例增加.  相似文献

Responses of temperature sensitive (cold) cells from the antenna of ground beetles (tribe Platynini) were compared in species with different ecological preferences and daily activity rhythms. Action potential rates were characterized at various temperatures (ranges 23-39 degrees C) and during rapid changes in it (Deltat=0.5-15 degrees C). The stationary firing frequencies were nearly twice as high in eurythermic open field ground beetles Agonum muelleri and Anchomenus dorsalis (firing rates ranging from 22 to 47imp/s) than in a stenothermic forest species Platynus assimilis. In the eurythermic species, the firing rate did not significantly depend on temperature (Anchomenus dorsalis range of 23-27 degrees C and Agonum muelleri range of 23-33 degrees C) but plots of firing rate versus temperature showed rapid declines when lethally high temperatures were approached. In contrast, a nearly linear decline of the firing rate/temperature curve was observed in Platynus assimilis. Responses to rapid temperature decreases were also considerably higher in eurythermic species. Both the peak frequency of the initial burst (maximum 420-650Hz) as well as the sustained discharge in the first 4s of the response were higher than in Platynus assimilis. Long silent periods, lasting up to several seconds, that occurred at the beginning of the response to rapid warming were significantly shorter in Agonum muelleri and Anchomenus dorsalis compared to Platynus assimilis. These findings suggest that the responses of thermoreceptors to temperature changes may be correlated with specific ecological preferences.  相似文献

在4个温度(15 ℃、20 ℃、25 ℃和30 ℃)下对4个不同生化遗传特征的萼花臂尾轮虫克隆(A、B、C和D)所产幼体的耐饥饿时间及其与温度、轮虫个体大小和卵大小等的关系进行研究.结果表明,15 ℃下克隆B幼体耐饥饿时间最短,为45.67 h;20 ℃和25 ℃下克隆C幼体耐饥饿时间均最长,分别为61.33 h和72.01 h;30 ℃下克隆A幼体耐饥饿时间最长,为40.11 h.4个温度间,克隆A轮虫幼体的耐饥饿时间在15 ℃下最长,克隆B和C轮虫幼体的耐饥饿时间在30 ℃下均最短,克隆D轮虫幼体的耐饥饿时间随培养温度的升高而逐步显著缩短.4个克隆轮虫的幼体耐饥饿时间均与温度呈显著负相关关系.克隆A轮虫的幼体耐饥饿时间还与卵体积呈显著负相关,克隆C相反;克隆B和克隆D轮虫幼体耐饥饿时间与个体体积呈显著正相关关系.  相似文献

A few epidemiological studies have examined whether there was an interactive effect between temperature and ambient particulate matter on cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality, but the results were inconsistent. The present study used three time-series approaches to explore whether maximum temperature modified the impact of ambient particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter (PM10) on daily respiratory hospital admissions, cardiovascular hospital admissions, respiratory emergency visits, cardiovascular emergency visits, non-external cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in Brisbane between 1996 and 2001. The analytical approaches included a bivariate response surface model, a non-stratification parametric model and a stratification parametric model. Results show that there existed a statistically significant interaction between PM10 and temperature on most health outcomes at various lags. PM10 exhibited more adverse health effects on warm days than cold days. The choice of the degree of freedom for smoothers to adjust for confounders and the selection of arbitrary cut-offs for temperature affected the interaction estimates to a certain extent, but did not change the overall conclusion. The results imply that it is important to control and reduce the emission of air particles in Brisbane, particularly when temperature increases.  相似文献

Bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNase A) forms two three-dimensional (3D) domain swapped dimers. Crystallographic investigations have revealed that these dimers display completely different quaternary structures: one dimer (N-dimer), which presents the swapping of the N-terminal helix, is characterized by a compact structure, whereas the other (C-dimer), which is stabilized by the exchange of the C-terminal end, shows a rather loose assembly of the two subunits. The dynamic properties of monomeric RNase A and of the N-dimer have been extensively characterized. Here, we report a molecular dynamics investigation carried out on the C-dimer. This computational experiment indicates that the quaternary structure of the C-dimer undergoes large fluctuations. These motions do not perturb the proper folding of the two subunits, which retain the dynamic properties of RNase A and the N-dimer. Indeed, the individual subunits of the C-dimer display the breathing motion of the beta-sheet structure, which is important for the enzymatic activity of pancreatic-like ribonucleases. In contrast to what has been observed for the N-dimer, the breathing motion of the two subunits of the C-dimer is not coupled. This finding suggests that the intersubunit communications in a 3D domain swapped dimer strongly rely on the extent of the interchain interface. Furthermore, the observation that the C-dimer is endowed with a high intrinsic flexibility holds interesting implications for the specific properties of 3D domain swapped dimers. Indeed, a survey of the quaternary structures of the other 3D domain swapped dimers shows that large variations are often observed when the structural determinations are conducted in different experimental conditions. The 3D domain swapping phenomenon coupled with the high flexibility of the quaternary structure may be relevant for protein-protein recognition, and in particular for the pathological aggregations.  相似文献
