Postcopulatory sexual selection is widely accepted to underlie the extraordinary diversification of sperm morphology. However, why does it favour longer sperm in some taxa but shorter in others? Two recent hypotheses addressing this discrepancy offered contradictory explanations. Under the sperm dilution hypothesis, selection via sperm density in the female reproductive tract favours more but smaller sperm in large, but the reverse in small, species. Conversely, the metabolic constraint hypothesis maintains that ejaculates respond positively to selection in small endothermic animals with high metabolic rates, whereas low metabolic rates constrain their evolution in large species. Here, we resolve this debate by capitalizing on the substantial variation in mammalian body size and reproductive physiology. Evolutionary responses shifted from sperm length to number with increasing mammalian body size, thus supporting the sperm dilution hypothesis. Our findings demonstrate that body-size-mediated trade-offs between sperm size and number can explain the extreme diversification in sperm phenotypes.  相似文献

A quick and inexpensive method to determine absolute nannofossil abundance in deep sea sediments – the “drop” technique (modified dilution method) – was compared to two other available methods – the filtration and random settling techniques. All techniques rely on the same basic principle, under which a volume of known concentration (bulk sediment weight/mL) is distributed evenly over a known total area (glass slide or filter) to then count particles within a set of (randomly) selected fields of view. The three preparation techniques were also calibrated by spiking the samples with microbeads to approach the “real values” as closely as possible. Significant offsets in abundance estimates between methods mainly reflect bias due to the uneven distribution and/or loss of particles. We show that the drop technique is most consistent and accurate in estimating “real values” and offers similar or better reproducibility than the other techniques. The drop method also allows detection of the same trends with or without calibration with microbeads. The filtration method holds the risk to drastically underestimate absolute abundances, while the settling technique is demanding in terms of time and may suffer from advection processes. The composition of nannofossil assemblages can be reliably determined by any of the three different techniques.  相似文献

The calculation of most probable numbers (mpn) was used for the estimation of numbers of infective entomopathogenic nematodes in soil. The mpn concept was first introduced in bacteriology as a means of estimating numbers of organisms in a substrate without a direct count, in cases where direct enumeration could not be applied. In the work reported here, soil samples infested with infective juveniles (IJs) of Heterorhabditis megidis (isolate HF85) were diluted with uninfested soil and the diluted soils were baited with mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor). The mpn of infective units of IJs in the undiluted soil was calculated. The mpn calculation was found to be applicable to entomopathogenic nematodes in soil under particular conditions. It could be successfully applied to data for the response of soil units but not to the data based on the response of individual insects, as the latter did not confirm to a Poisson series. The calculated mpn represented between 2.9 and 7.1% of the initial inoculum of IJs. It was suggested that IJs might act as a group in infecting an insect host. Using the data for Tenebrio mortality on parasitisation, the mpn based on quantal response of the mealworms would therefore not give the true density of IJs in the soil sample but the effective density, or the quantity of infective units. Although the biological significance of the infective unit needs further clarification, mpn was found to be a useful parameter for use in comparative experiments.  相似文献

Aiming at estimating the average N2-fixation in a pasture, ap preciating the great variability due to patchy urine and dung deposition, the in fluence of dairy cow excreta on biological N2-fixation in a perennial ryegrass–white clover mixture was studied using natural urine and dung. Application of urine as well as dung affected the N2-fixation by promoting the growth of grass and thereby the proportion of clover was significantly reduced. Also the proportion of clover-N derived from the atmosphere (pNdfa) was significantly reduced. In control plots clover dry matter constituted between 40 and 50% of the total dry matter production and the pNdfa ranged between 0.8 and 0.9. Addition of urine caused a significant increase in the grass growth rates, which was the primary reason for a decrease in proportion of clover. At the same time pNdfa decreased to 0.2–0.4 followed by an increase resulting in a total reduction of 45% in the N2-fixation in urine affected areas over a period of four months. The dung only affected the N2-fixation for a distance of up to 10 cm from the edge of the dung pats. In this border area the pNdfa decreased from 0.85 to 0.75 during one month after application followed by an increase, so that after three months there was no difference between pNdfa at 0–10 and 10–20 cm distance from the dung hill. The proportion of clover was lower in the 0–10 cm than in the 10–20 cm distance, which totally resulted in a total reduction of 20% in the N2-fixation over a period of four months in the 0–10 cm area around the dung pats. Considering the proportion of a pasture which may by affected by excreta at a stocking density of 4–6 cows ha-1, the length of the grazing period, the frequency of excretion and the area covered by individual patches, it was estimated that the N2-fixation in a grass-clover pasture would be reduced by 10–15% compared to the N2-fixation in a grass-clover sward not exposed to animal excreta.  相似文献

Queensland fruit fly [Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt), Diptera, Tephritidae] is the most devastating insect pest impacting Australian horticulture. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an important component of tephritid pest management programs. However, mass‐rearing and irradiation (to render insects sterile) may reduce the fitness and performance of the insect, including the ability of sterile males to successfully compete for wild females. Manipulation of the gut microbiome, including the supplementation with bacterial probiotics shows promise for enhancing the quality of mass‐reared sterile flies, however there are fewer published studies targeting the larval stage. In this study, we supplemented the larval stage of mass‐reared B. tryoni with bacterial probiotics. We tested several individual bacteria that had been previously isolated and characterized from the gut of wild B. tryoni larvae including Asaia sp., Enterobacter sp., Lactobacillus sp., Leuconostoc sp. We also tested a consortium of all four of these bacterial isolates. The fitness parameters tested included adult survival in field cages, laboratory mate selection of bacteria supplemented males by bacteria nonsupplemented females, and laboratory locomotor activity of adult flies. None of the bacterial probiotic treatments in the current study was significantly different to the control for field survival, mate selection or locomotor activity of adult B. tryoni, which agree with some of the other studies regarding bacterial probiotics fed to the larval stage of tephritids. Future work is needed to determine if feeding the same, and/or other probiotics to adults, as opposed to larvae can positively impact survival, mating performance, mating competitiveness and locomotor activity of B. tryoni. The bacterial group(s) and function of bacterial species that increase fitness and competitiveness is also of interest to tephritid mass‐rearing programs.  相似文献

Area-wide Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) programmes against medfly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), are being increasingly implemented worldwide. A key issue for SIT is to release sterile males that are sufficiently competitive with males from the wild population. Post-teneral nutrition and ginger root oil (GRO) exposure of sterile males prior to release have been shown to improve male competitiveness or performance. However, few studies are available on the effect of post-teneral nutrition and ginger oil exposure on longevity and mortality in bait treatments by sterile male C. capitata . In this study, we found that longevity was increased by the addition of protein to the standard pre-release sugar diet, whereas exposure to GRO did not influence the longevity of sterile males. Mortality in spinosad baits was influenced both by diet and GRO exposure. Sterile males on a protein-deprived diet suffered greater mortality than sterile males fed with both sugar and protein. When sterile males were fed on the protein-deprived diet, GRO exposure increased their mortality. However, no significant differences were found in adults on the sugar-protein diet, whether or not they had been exposed to GRO. These results show, for the first time, a negative effect of GRO exposure in terms of increasing mortality in proteinaceous bait treatments, a common practice in areas where SIT is implemented. Nevertheless, this effect could be reduced by the addition of protein to the standard pre-release diet. The implications of these results for SIT programmes against C. capitata are discussed.  相似文献
